Better happening in this game than in a Hibs game.

Anyway it's the defender who'll take the own goal anyway so Rocky should just forget about it. The defender should have cleared his lines or gone wide rather than kicking it into his own goal.

As was said in commentary, 21 competitive games at home, 3 losses, Belgium, Germany and Russia. There is definitely to build on. The way Clarke is going about it, reminds me verymuch of what i saw O'Neil do with Norn Ire

Top of our group and a one off game to get to a tournament. That’s something. It’s not pretty, but at least there are signs it might be starting to become effective.

Players missing tonight who enhance the team as well.

Seems a good comparison. We are not blessed with a great deal of technically gifted players but he has already developed a club like atmosphere. All the players know their roles in the team and fight hard for each other. Impressive that he has developed this so quickly and it bodes well for the future. People just need to set their expectations accordingly which I know is never going to happen:greengrin

Had a tenner on that at 3 to 1 thought that might happen. :greengrin

Scotland were good and looks like Clarke is starting to build something. Some excellent passages of play in the second half and should have scored more than one. We have won a watch with Dykes

Take off your blinkers, Jim.

You'd be screaming for it if happened to a Hibs player. No doubt you've wanted fouls for less. I certainly have.

Going to ground dramatically isn't against any football law. Pulling a player back, however, is.

No radge never a pen. No blinkers here. :greengrin

Winning this group can get you a playoff for 2022 World Cup, if you don’t qualify from the qualification group.

Next months nations league final is to qualify for the 2021 European Championships which should have taken place this summer.
The current nations league group with Slovakia, the Czech Republic & Israel will offer an alternative route into the 2022 World Cup Finals

A good win last night and a better performance. Clarke is doing a good job IMO. It’s not been perfect and there’s been a few stinkers performance wise, but we’re slowly becoming more than the sum of our parts. We’re harder to beat now, which is the first part.

Folk will put the boot in whoever he chooses but the likes Considine & McGinn show that as long as you’re playing well you have a genuine chance of a call up.

The Nations league is proving to be a useful route to the finals of competitions for Scotland. Beat Serbia next month and we are in the European Championships beat Czech Republic next month and we are within touching distancing of play offs for the World Cup. At least these games are competitive and have something to play for rather than international friendlies.

The winners of the nations league in terms of the World Cup qualification will enter play offs far trickier than those for the euros.

But in terms of Euro 2024, we will be one of the top two seeds In qualifying if we get promoted to group 1, so going forward it’ll be easier to qualify. It’ll also mean basically being guaranteed a play off spot regardless of how you perform as the majority of the rest of group 1 will get there automatically.

In terms of 2022 it’ll be extremely hard to qualify regardless, with only group winners getting to the World Cup, so any little ray of hope is welcome and the potential of getting to a play off is that ray.

Getting to Pool A will reflect good performances, performing in Pool A, a whole different ball game.
Right now Bosnia Iceland Sweden & Switzerland are bottom of their groups. I think if we get promoted our goal is to get enough points not to be relegated. But yes there will be very few teams that dont automatically qualify, so getting into the play-offs is a strong possibility

Worth noting that Serbia are bottom of their group, 1 point from 3 games. Admittedly its a tough group, Russia Turkey and Hungary, but it shows they are NOT invincible. They are on their way back to Pool C, and we could be in striking distance of Pool A by Thursday morning. With a full team, we are more than capable of taking them

Bradford City were pulling in crowds similar to Hibs last season. So probably double that for Kilmarnock and three times that for St Johnstone.

The guy Craig Napier shouldn't be allowed to referee another senior match ever again.

He gave Hearts a first minute penalty when it clearly hit off the Raith players back, his back for goodness sake. I never saw the next one but some on here saying it was clearly outside of the box. Then when it was still 2 1 the ball clearly hit the hearts player's hand in the hearts penalty area with Napier just yards from it and he waved it away claiming it had hit off the Hearts player hip.

I don't like saying refs are bent but after that shocker Craig Napier is as bent as the proverbial two bob note. He made sure Hearts were going to run out winners in this one.

As you say he might be hoping to be awarded the semi final. Might as well not turn up if he got it.

Surely it’s club form that gets you into the national team, especially if you’ve not been there before such as P McGinn, Hanlon, Porto etc

Initially I’d totally agree, but if you continually offer little to nothing once you get into the national team there must be a point when your club form is no longer the determining factor ?

Managers play him too deep. He creates and scores when playing further forward, plays sideways and backwards when playing deep. Jack is in there for that role, get McGregor up beside McGinn and Fraser behind the striker and be a bit more adventurous. It’s working by sneaking 1-0’s but at some point we’re going to have to be a bit more expansive.

Imagine if Petrie hadn't been tight with the cash and Steve Clarke had inherited our post Yogi team for his first job as manager/head coach, with the club being run fairly badly at that moment in time. Chances are he'd be doing punditry for Sportscene as we speak and we'd have a different manager.

TBH back then I think Guardiola would have looked average in charge of us. We were in a spiral and it really needed a short sharp shock to get us out of it.

Amazing how things turn out though, Clarke isn't exactly going to win style points for the way we play but I think given time to develop we could be on a good path here.

Great result and a pretty good performance. McGinn is superb and I thought Hanlon, after a poor first contribution, did well. Clarke is going about it the right way imo. Winning the group would mean being in a higher pot for the World Cup qualifiers. Would also mean a route down the play offs if they don’t qualify via the World Cup qualifying group and it would mean playing in League A with the chance of going on to win the Nations League, although Scotland would be up against the best teams in Europe.

If the Czechs and Israel draw their next game we wouldn't need any points. Israel wouldn't be able to catch us, and we win the tie-breaker over the Czechs

The Czechs are at home for their last 2 games and Scotland are away for both. The Czechs were good tonight so I expect them to win both, so Scotland need a win.
Had we beaten Israel in our first game we would have been home and hosed but the draw means we are only 4 points ahead so it could still go tits up.
Hopefully a lot of the better players return for those matches and Covid and doesn't interject again.
The threadbare squad have done unbelievably well in the last week to win all 3 games.

Think Gallagher McTominay and Considine are looking a good unit at the back. Prefer Considine to Mckenna. We need to get results away from home. Steve Clarke in instilling a club mentality in the squad. Got some quality players to come back in looking promising.

Good to see it starting to click after all the criticism Clarke has had. He has come up with a plan and stuck to it - fair play to him.

get nisbet in for dykes for the game in slovakia

Get Nisbet in the squad, but we’ve finally found a striker. Dykes is probably one of the first names on the team sheet at the moment. Nisbet might be a partner for him, but replace Dykes. Not for me.

Is that first bit right? I thought it meant we moved up to League A for the next Nations League only (in addition to having a chance at a World Cup playoff), rather having any impact on the World Cup Qualifiers.

I don’t think winning the group automatically puts you in pot one or two but the nations league results have a big impact on the FIFA rankings meaning if Scotland do keep getting good results they will put themselves in a good position of being drawn from a top pot.

Did Dundee genuinely just do a few week long preseason? They look like sofa bears?

I can’t remember a team look so off it early on. This will finish 4/5

As a said on another thread, as the Forfar game was postponed, they’ve only played one competitive game

The league season is 10 minutes old. Give them time.
