Of course he was off side. The usual analysis that goes into these marginal decisions conveniently ignored as there is only one conclusion. C4 are only interested in smiles, flowers and ignore that rules if it interferes with the message :greengrin

Genuinely awful ‘analysis’ there.

Squeezed in between a ton of adverts of course.

Beg to differ, it happens all the time - it's clear his foot kicks the back of his other leg as he tries to adjust himself in getting to the ball (after it was well away from the pair of them).

If that's a penalty (assuming we're just ignoring that he's blatantly offside anyway), the game is truly done.

Yes, he kicks himself after the German player hits him.

The useless biased English pundits claiming it was a clear penalty but not a word was said about Kane being clearly offside.

That’s cause there was no offside offence ;)

That’s cause there was no offside offence ;)so what your saying he wasn’t standing in a offside position when the ball was kicked. Okay it might have come off a German player but he was in a offside position gaining an advantage , then he goes down like a sack o tatties tripping over his own feet and gets a pen. The games goosed.

Nope, I’m saying he was in an offside position but didn’t commit an offside offence by touching the ball.

Therefore if he’s not touched the ball and been fouled then a penalty is correct.

If he touched the ball, or impeded and opponent which prevented them playing the ball, then no penalty.

If he scores then no goal as he’s committed an offence.

I’ve explained the laws of the game in the post above. Not sure what else I can do to help.

If you think he committed an offside offence why did two of Europes elite refs give a pen after watching it several times.. the reason being is that they know the rules.

Still think it’s soft as considering the next actions but offside it probably wasn’t considering the above.

What's this competition for? I honestly am losing track?

The Nations League is another avenue for three teams to qualify for Euro 2024 that don't qualify through the normal qualifying campaign - it's the competition that allowed Scotland to qualify for Euro 2020. The winners of Leagues A, B and C (out of the teams that haven't qualified automatically through the conventional route) will qualify for Euro 2024.

If the winners of any of the Nations League groups have already qualified for Euro 2024 their place will go to the next best team that hasn't qualified.

There's play offs taking place in March 2024 which will determine the final three teams to qualify for Euro 2024.

There's also a Nations League Finals which will be played in June 2023, this is contested between the four group winners from League A and will consist of two semi finals, a third place play off and a final.

Winning Leagues B, C and D will result in promotion to the next group up for the next edition of the Nations League and finishing bottom of Leagues A, B and C will result in relegation to the next group down.

Scotland's currently in League B along with Armenia, Ireland and Ukraine.

How does the winner of the leagues get decided when there is 4 groups in each league?

How does the winner of the leagues get decided when there is 4 groups in each league?

The four winners of each group (or the best team that hasn't already qualified for Euro 2024 through the normal qualifying route) within each league go forward to the play offs. There's then two semis and a final for each league from A-C and the winners of each final is each group's (A-C) representative in Euro 2024.

I also thought it was a Pen. And a FIFA ref and VAR ref also thought so. In Germany so hardly pressured by the crowd.

Mon the Tallies on Saturday, a rerun of the Euro Final. I’ll be less stressed about this one though.

Harry Kane sure takes a good penalty. I don't think I've seen him miss one.

Out of the 51 he has taken over his whole career, he has missed 8, 2 for England. His last miss was in the semi final of Euro 2020 against Denmark, but he scored the rebound on that occasion. The only other miss for England was against Turkey in a friendly 2016 but he did also score in that match and England won it 2-1. Pretty safe pair of boots to take pen :agree:

German caught him imo. Not sure whether he was offside but assume he was deemed not interfering initially

Seen the replay of the incident about 5 times and I still can't see how he wasn't offside, he looked it in every replay.

Numptie

Pretty clear that he isn't offside. You are only offside when you touch the ball, or impede an opponent - when in an offside position. Kane doesn't touch the ball and is impeded as he goes for it, not the other way round. I still think it wasn't a penalty as he did his usual dive - but he wasn't offside.

This isn't really true and Definitely isnt the reason he wasn't offside. Been confirmed it is because it came off a German who tried to tried to play it.

I know that the German player played the ball, and you can then argue that it was a positive action to play the ball, which I agree it was. But even if he hadn't played the ball Kane didn't touch the ball - so basically it was doubly not offside. And he still dived - no penalty!!

Might not have been offside under the current rules but it certainly should have been.
He is offside all through the passage of play and makes no attempt to change that.
The foul, if it was one, wouldn't have happened had he not been offside.

At least he's playing a proper RB instead of a LB there like last week, didn't work when he tried shoehorning Tierney into the team until he realised Tierney could play in a back 3. TBH I'm not overly fussed about these Nations league games, I'll have it on but with the volume low.

We've played 3 times in Ireland since then - two defeats and a draw.

The heat in Armenia shouldn't be too bad, the game kicks off at 8pm local time and it's currently forecast to be 22°C in Yerevan at that time which hopefully shouldn't cause too many issues.

Former Soviet Union states though, when the Soviet Union split up, the former states to the west of the Caspian Sea joined UEFA and the states to the east joined the AFC. Kazakhstan subsequently joined UEFA.

The border between Europe and Asia is an imaginary line drawn using social and historical conventions, but considering Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkey/Turkiye and Kazakhstan technically straddle the two continents then I don't see why they can't be part of UEFA.

Armenia is fully in Asia, but at a guess I would imagine they see themselves as more culturally connected to Europe rather than Asia given their history as a Soviet Republic.

Interestingly some people class Cyprus as being in Asia and not Europe although I don't think many people have an issue with them being in UEFA.

Israel play in UEFA because a lot of the west Asian countries would refuse to play them, so it's probably more about keeping peace than anything else.

Wow. Republic pumped by Armenia the other night and NI losing to Kosovo.

What’s up with Irish football these days?

That will be Northern Ireland's 13th match in the Nations League and they've yet to win a game.

Their opponents;

Austria × 4
Bosnia × 2
Norway × 2
Romania × 2
Greece × 1
Cyprus × 1

Group D doesn't get a place in Euro 2024 (unless all teams in Group C qualify through their qualifying group) so I'm assuming Euro 2028 will be the same.

I'm well aware of where turkey is. West of Instanbul is Europe, East is Asia.

Turkey straddles both.

But Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan etc?

It's ludicrous that these countries are included.

Remind me of where the Ural Mountains are [ the boundary between Europe and Asia] and then explain how an Asian country bordering Africa, surrounded by other Asian countries, gets to be in UEFA but they don't?

Nothing to do with logic and everything to do with geo-political expediency

I would argue that Georgia is entirely within Europe. Its an extension of southern Russia which is completely in Europe and west of the Urals.
Georgia sits almost completely within the Caucuses mountain ranges which are European and a natural boundary with Asia.
Beyond the Caucuses lie Turkey and Persia which is where Asia begins when travelling south (from Russia) Georgia is home to one of the worlds oldest civilisations and cultures. They are a cradle of Christianity and modern Georgians are far more connected and integrated within Europe.

In Russia if you went to the far east of the country and for example the cities of Khabarovsk or Vladivostok where 99% of the population are Slavic or of other European stock they would say that where they are is definitely Europe. These areas are closer to America or even Australia than Moscow!
But if you went to say European cities like Kazan or Ufa, thousands of miles west of the Russian far east, many people would say that they reside in Asia. Kazan and Ufa sit in Muslim majority republics and have lots of cultural links
to Iran/Iraq for example.
What I'm getting at is it's very difficult to define a continent.

Disagree. The reason this is so annoying is because for the first time in year's we have a team of decent footballers. Playing like this makes it more frustrating because we should be comfortably winning this going by their form/team. It's one of the worst ROI squads in decades and we're making them look like one of the best.

Again it shows how important Kieran Tierney is. He was like a one man team in some of these qualifiers, driving us forward.

Have to admit this is the first time that I have watched Scotland for some time, we are a poor side playing a side that I also watched get cuffed by the Ukraine reserve side last Wed.
Scotland are going nowhere, it don't take no expert to see that.

It's embarrassing, sitting amongst loads of Scotland fans in the home end. They've put the tools away.

Really poor first half against mediocre opposition. McGinn should have buried the second chance. Defending against Duffy from set pieces has been brutal. What did they practice at training? Get Christie off who’s done nothing.

The love in with Gordon hides the fact he is a ******g vampire scared of a cross.

As for Clarke, found wanting again. Czech, Croatia, Ukraine and now this. We beat a second eleven Denmark Ho had already qualified and and Israel team in the last minute.

I'd agree with that.

Very good game and a half for him so far.

You've got to respect his appetite to make an impression ever since he got a wee sniff at Celtic last summer.

Disagree. The reason this is so annoying is because for the first time in year's we have a team of decent footballers. Playing like this makes it more frustrating because we should be comfortably winning this going by their form/team. It's one of the worst ROI squads in decades and we're making them look like one of the best.

Being a team of, as you say, "descent" players wont get us anywhere. The fact they play with better players at club level doesnt help.

Gilmorton on and McTominay back into defence. Clarke is now just making ut up as he goes along. We improved v Ukraine when he did the exact opposite if that and pushed McTominay into midfield and took Gilmore off He needs to go

McTominay at the back again.

I've rarely watched a Scotland match in a long time as I am not prepared to pay for something that England supporters can see for free on terrestrial tv. I don't think I am missing anything.

I have just finished watching the Alex Ferguson biopic, woudn't like to think what he must think about our current incumbents from the top down.

It's only a good option when we're playing a team we will dominate the ball against. Otherwise he's too often found wanting there. Might work if we pick it up in the second half and have a bit on an onslaught.

Good strike but that's not even close to the corner. If the France keeper got pelterd for Faddys goal vs them, Gordon should be saving that.

I think he's class.

Part of the problem here, that can't be denied but he's not the biggest problem.

Fair do's mate but I just dont see it with him. 2 goals in nearly 40 caps, one of which was a fluke. Hardly any assists, rarely creates anything, rarely puts in a good tackle. Industrious at shuffling the ball the sideways is the best compliment I could give him.
