Not to be too negative but another young player that’ll need a work permit?Every player we sign who isn't british will require a work permit - likley most of our signings

A Uruguayan under 20 international with plenty senior games under his belt. Highly rated in South America and would be a coup for Hibs. Love that we are looking into the profile or player and looking wider than previous years.

Apparently it’s a shocking policy according to fans on here. People are never happy. This is much more exciting than signing a centre back released by Rotherham or signed from Morcambe etc etc

We don’t need a first choice left footer as Hanlon is our first choice and is back in full training. What we need is a player who will go on to replace Hanlon as his gametime decreases over the next few years. Like Porteous coming through and replacing McGregor.

Kind of hoping that is for the development side and not our answer to our CB problem

This guy is not in any way a development team player. A quick scan of twitter shows how highly rated he is in South America.

Looking at the work permit points I think he should be eligible for the easy pass (not guaranteed as I don’t know how it fully works). This is how Celtic got a WP so quickly for Bernabei.

He needs 15 points for an easy pass.

He played 100% of his teams minutes in the Copa Scudamerica which is worth 10 points.
His minutes played in the Uruguayan top league will be worth somewhere between 1-3 points.
The club he plays for is worth a further 4 points.

Hanlon is back in non contact training with Mitchel .Still a fair bit to go before he is match fit .
Mcgennis is not even at that stage yet
McGregor played fir the second half yesterday .

You have got to wonder if Magennis is going to make any meaningful contribution, we are going into the 3rd year of his contract, will have 2 yrs left at the end of the season and how many games has he played.

Did anyone other than Maloney play Doig at CB?

Pretty sure he never played there because the were no alternatives, it was a conscious choice of the manager to play him there.

Which was a poor choice.

Apparently he played CB when he was at Hearts, and was released.

But we haven’t gone into the transfer market to get someone like him thst csn score from midfield Regularly Henderson’s a possibility if he keep improving
He will clearly get a chance under Lee if he can get fit But if he breaks down again before he can get back playing or fairly soon after he starts playing then we would need to be looking at the return we have had , and at some
Whether Some sort of severance package may be needed by end of the season
We clearly couldn’t go into his fourth year of contract with him still hardly having played for us
So it’s a big season for him His career will be in jeopardy if he can’t get fit and cement a place in the team

Why not? Have you seen him play there?

He’s young and modern players are more adaptable than they were, it’s very common to see them change positions.

I’ve not but I’ve seen him play centre half and imo he just wouldn’t be good there.

There seems to be a fascination at times for putting centre halves in there, over the years there’s been numerous threads about Hanlon or Porteous playing there.

We have more than enough centre mids before trying him there, even the likes of Delferierre and Tait look really good never mind the young lads in the 23s before we play Rocky there.

I’ve no idea, he could be brilliant and if that is the case then superb.

The way I viewed it as we have three young defenders in Porteous, Rocky and Mclelland. Fair enough Porteous has loads of games and I would actually class him as experienced, but below the first team there’s also Blaney, Brydon etc coming through.

I wanted someone in their ‘prime’ as Johnson called it, 24-28 sort of age with a lot of experience and quality and be a leader.

This guy could be brilliant. But there will again be a work permit issue, language and culture change and obviously settling in to a new country.

I want someone to come in and hit the ground running, obviously this guy could do that but it’s a huge ask imo.

I would say that someone who’s coming from Uruguay will be used to a physical game, probably more so than any European league.

One thing that’s been talked about with some of the other young signings is lack of first team experience, this guy has been playing every week this year at a good level. Certainly an interesting one.

I’d be surprised by that given Steven Bradley is there and plays same position.

I’ve always thought that Hauge was basically signed to help Melkersen settle in. Nothing I’ve seen in his brief appearances have changed that view.

I remember when he signed, David Weatherston (ex Scottish pro based in Norway) said that he’d watched Hauge all season and felt he was miles away from our level.

Seems there are several ways to accumulate the 15 points required to be granted a visa.

All decent points, but this utopian centre half with loads of experience could turn out to be crap. There's no guarantees imo that an older, experienced player will fare any better than a young, hungry one. All signings are a risk. I'm sure we could all name an experienced player we have signed who was totally Tom Kite.

Sounds like it coul be a really good signing . Only 20 years old but already haa a lot of first team experience at a good level as a central defender and left back . Left home as a 14 year old for football reasons which might help him settle . Having Italian and Uruguayan nationality may be due to personal / family situation but may also suggest he`s keen to make a career in Europe . May not affect work permit situation if he signs for us ( though posts here seem to suggest he meets requirements to get WP quickly ) but would certainly help if we get a good offer from a club from Spain , Italy etc Would also help us to become better known to clubs and agents in South America and in rest of Europe . Hope it happens and if it does , congratulations to club and especially our recruitment team .

Obviously , many or most signings may not work out as always and like at all clubs but possible advantages of such a signing policy are numerous . Means fans may have to be patient as results may take a while to show . If this signing takes place it`s another example that our recruitment team is doing a lot of work and it`s not scattergun , but following a clear strategy . Whether that strategy will be successful in the next 3 to 5 years noone knows and will depend on how success is measured , but at least interesting times are coming .

Thats certainly more recent than the Calderwood/Fenlon disasters. While this transfer policy is better than 2012, we were still signing better players in the championship with a smaller budget.

I think a mix of younger players and some real proven quality is what we need. Although Youan and Cabraja could be just that.

The point system is only based on the previous 12 months.

The big one for getting points is playing in a continental competition such as Champions League, Europa League, Copa Libertadores or Copa Scudamerica. It’s worth up to 10 points of the 15 required if a player plays over 90% of minutes, however Cabraja only played 21% of minutes in the Europa League for Ferencvaros which is worth 0 points, however he will have 5 points for appearing in the group stage.

The Hungarian and Slovenian leagues are band 6 leagues so his league appearances are not worth many points.

Also from @stewartross89 on twitter

Liverpool Montevideo averaging 52.3% possession so volume defensive numbers might not be super high anyway, if dominating ball more often than not. Defensive duel win % maybe a concern but some nice passing numbers yeah - 9.57 progressive passes per 90, 77.3% success rate.

Nah how those graphs work is they take every CB in the Uruguayan league, and rank them on each metric. How much of each section of the radar is filled in represents what percentile he is in for each metric.

so 70% of CBs in that league had more arial duels than him, and 53% had a higher arial duel win %.

Not as worrying as it initially looks as the former could be explained by the fact that his team probably dominated possession most matches (as they won the league?) so he wouldn't be as facing as many crosses and long balls as other defenders.

Then to be just outside the top 50% for arial duel win % isn't that bad when you consider how young he is, if he fills out a bit and works on his strength you'd think this would improve.

Throwing shade? Have a word.

I’m not doubting for a second the guy will be tough, but there will be a settling in period and getting used to the league.

After being on knocked out the league cup already I think it’s fair to say the majority wanted some quality additions, especially at centre half. Does a 20 year old from Uraguy fill me with loads of confidence? No.

It’s of course exciting as he could be brilliant, but we just don’t know and imo the majority of our players fit that bill at the moment.

I've been reading twitter posts from journalists and Uruguayan football fans since the Joaquin Sosa rumour emerged.

Sosa is contracted to Nacional (one of the 2 biggest clubs in the country, the other being Peñarol) but has only ever played once for them. He was loaned out to a small club called Rentistas last year and was a regular there. This season he has been loaned out to Liverpool and he has also been a regular there. Liverpool are actually doing so well this season that they are challenging Nacional for titles and Nacional fans seem happy to sell him now, thereby weakening Liverpool's chances this season. Where have we seen that stuff before!?

From comments on twitter he seems to have played some games at left back but is really a left sided centre half. He doesn't seem to be what we'd normally expect from a Uruguayan centre half (I always think of Godin) as he is more of a footballing centre half rather than a very strong, dominant centre half. He apparently likes a long pass, in particular long diagonals and likes to play out from the back. He doesn't appear as strong defensively in the air as we'd expect from a Uruguayan centre back but does seem to be a goal threat at the other end.

Going by comments from fans he seems to be defensively likely to make the odd mistake and he isn't particularly strong or great in the air. On the flip side he gets lots of positive comments on his ability on the ball and on his left foot. Some Nacional fans seem to want to keep him as he has potential so that's a good sign too. All in all, not quite what you'd maybe expect from a Uruguayan centre half.

Porteous away? :dunno:

Hibs had already taken negotiations quite far for Cabraja, just waited for Doig to be confirmed at Verona before completing the Cabraja deal.

Whether it’s now, January or next summer, Porteous will be away. In terms of bringing in a fee of some sorts, now is probably the best time to move him on.

We’re not short of money, he is worth more to the team this season than a paltry fee now.

Judging by their international team, Uruguay players are tough as teak and it seems this guy is highly rated.

You just seem to be throwing shade on this thread at the moment!
At the moment it would seem Hibs are dammed if they do and dammed if they don't in terms of transfer targets, they are too old, too young, don't know the Scottish league, injury prone. Hibs have been criticised for not being adventurous in looking outwith the UK and also for bring in unknown players from.... out with the UK.

Fletcher would have been a really handy signing, doesn’t fit the bill of a potential sell-on value though, and I would imagine would have wanted a decent wedge.

See we’re now linked with another 20-year old with limited first-team experience, whom I bet the manager has never heard of either.

Bottom 6 for this team this season, I’m afraid.

I’m glad the club never signed Fletcher, purely down to what stoke fans were saying and how Johnson wants to play.

Whether a happy clapper or a negative nana there is far too much bickering in this site and this thread too. Truth is nobody really knows how good/bad we are gonna be this season as we've barely seen enough of most of new signings yet. On Sunday we were missing 12 first team players - so let's just give the new guys a chance to bed in and the new manager. LC was a disaster but it's done now and we can only hope it becomes a bit if a watershed moment - I still hope we add a CB and a midfielder as feel these are 2 areas we badly need to strengthen in

Is 2 seasons of top flight experience and games in the copa libertadores limited experience now? I’d say that’s pretty solid experience for a 20 year old and better pedigree than someone that’s lugged around Leagues 1 and 2 in England.

He’s certainly not leading on transfers. It’ll not be too dissimilar to how he operated at Sunderland.

https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/key-sunderland-figure-outlines-recruitment-strategy-that-will-surely-be-good-news-for-lee-johnson/

Seems like folk can’t get their heads around that clubs now have a strategy on recruitment and regardless of who is manager the club will stick to that strategy.

They’ll recruit a manager who is comfortable working under this structure.

The days of managers identifying players and then signing them, using the owners money, is long gone.

I’d also say that are plenty managers across the world who are simply the first team coach….here’s the squad and go make it work. If it doesn’t work then we’ll hire someone else.

No one is saying Johnson is identifying all the targets himself, quite the opposite, but he does get final say on the deal. There's no situation where Johnson says he doesn't want a player but other members on the committee overrule him and he's signed without Johnson consent.

The poster I quoted said he was leading on recruitment, that’s why I questioned that.

LJ - I need a new left back
IG - Here’s a choice of three that we’ve identified and Ben has done all the work to agree a deal. We reckon that they’ll improve the first team and more importantly generate income for the club. Take a look at them and tell us which one.
LJ - ok, go for player A

That’s what I would expect to happen and will be similar to most bigger clubs nowadays, I’m not sure why anyone would be afraid to admit it. The manager states what he is after and has final say on who is signed, I would describe that as leading recruitment in the context of a modern football club. There will still be scope within such a model for managers to sign players who they themselves can recommend like Johnson did with McGeady or Carl Winchester while at Sunderland.

I suspect the above will be far, far closer to what actually happens than some of us care to admit. I’m not sure why though, that’s just how clubs operate these days.
I think that’s probably the case with the caveat that if LJ said “actually, can you have a look at player D who i know and think will suit us?” then we’d invest the time in trying to sign that player.

And then the committee vote on it? 😉😁

One of the quotes:

“Tomorrow I play the final. My contract is paid by Liverpool. I still have not confirmed my departure to Scotland. I know there is interest, it makes me happy that the opportunity presents itself to me”

Yeah looks like it's very likely to happen.

See that Elliot Anderson starts for Newcastle in their preseason game against Benfica. Didn't really think there was a chance we'd get him on loan.

That’s exactly what LJ said. Both recruitment team and he and his coaching team ID players then it gets discussed by the committee.

Suspect he was the one that identified Reuben McAllister as opposed to Ian Gordon

His Dad being assistant may have helped with that one

Yeah but that doesn’t really fit the narrative that players are signed and forced upon the management team by big bad Ian Gordon.

My post was more aimed at the “identifying” part 😁

Sorry my post was meant to be tongue in cheek around you saying LJ would have identified the assistants son

Poor attempt at humour 😩

Actually his time at Sunderland, he didn't make the transfers according to a popular fans podcast.

Thats very true. An example was Defoe, he made it clear he didnt want him, yet the day after he was sacked he signed.

I see Luis Suarez is signing for the lads parent club, Nacional. Gives an idea of the size of the club we are dealing with 🇺🇾
