Henderson I like but the type of player if we want instant success he should be no where near the first eleven if we aim to achieve.
I’m still not entirely sure the length of contract was merited in the first place for a player who hasn’t played at the highest level for a long period of time.
Hope he proves us wrong.

Not really sure a another young unproven midfielder is what we need. Plays the same position as Kenneh as well right?
He did look great against us last pre-season though.

Think he was a ‘deep lying playmaker’ type before but couple of times I saw him last season he was a lot further forward, more of a 10.
He’s also came on loads physically and looks solid for just turning 21.
Agree I’m not sure we’ll go for him considering we have Kenneh, Henderson, Campbell, Tait and even JDH and Magennis who are all young and 23 or under.

Was there not a video recently with Keane where he went into some detail about the fact that for this up coming season they had effectively organised a full ‘league’ campaign for the development side? I’m sure he mentioned that they would be playing the dev or B teams of the Premiership and Championship teams down south. He also suggested that he reckons that would actually be way better than any dev league up here in terms of developing the players.
It will take at least a year, maybe two or three before such an approach bears fruit so I’m a bit confused how some can be writing it off already. Especially when it’s been clear as day that we have often struggled to transition the promising youth into the first team.
This approach is reasonably common elsewhere and is a proven way to provide a better more sustainable pathway for players into the first eleven and, if successful, can prove to be very beneficial not just for the quality that eventually comes into the team but for the revenue it can generate when the home grown talent is sold on.
Obviously we need to add quality into the first team at the same time but the two are not mutually exclusive.

Ignoring the fact McFarlane is Jambo b******, I found this article interesting in how Brentford do it. Fortunately we don’t face quite the same issues as Brentford do in terms of our academy players being poached.

Yeah definitely.
I think the fact he was the leagues top scorer has lead to him being completely overhyped.
To put into context his goals total (13) - he’s got the lowest amount for the leagues top goalscorer since 98/99 when the SPL came in (I think that’s when that was anyway?) the second lowest is a couple of seasons with people scoring 18. In the seasons where 18 was scored:
Adam Rooney - 18 league goals, 28 in all competitions 14/15
Kris Boyd - 18 league goals, 23 in all competitions 17/18
Morelos - 18 league goals, 30 in all competitions 18/19
Charles Cook managed 13 goals in the league and 13 in total in all competitions.
Well done to the guy for finishing top goalscorer but ordinarily he’d be nowhere near it.

While I was look at that, I ended up going off on tangents and saw Watford have just released Jerome Sinclair. Once upon a time not so long ago worth loads of money and very highly thought of, looks like he’s had a few unsuccessful loans, I wonder if he’s the sort of guy LJ will fancy his chances of getting the most out of? Still pretty young and in a position we will be looking to fill.

Is he not a winger though. The other names there are out and out strikers. 13 goals from wide is impressive in any season. How does his assists compare to those guys - his assist numbers as relevant for a winger as goals. Hopefully one of our strikers would be our top scorer (all goals of course welcome).

I’ve always been more impressed with Hungbo whenever I’ve seen him. Despite his goals and assists this season I don’t think I’ve ever seen Charles Cook have a good game albeit I don’t watch them regularly.

Have you watched much of Gilmour at Chelsea? As someone who watches every chelsea game I can guarantee you he’s not out his depth.
His problem is getting into a midfield that consists of a euros winner and a World Cup winner.
Both are aging though and his time will come, he’s only 21.

Gilmour is quality and will have a good career. Whether he can force his way in at Chelsea is a different question but in the handful of games he’s actually played for them he’s been far from out of his depth. Norwich was a bad move for him.

He’d been brilliant for Scotland until the other night, but I was surprised how poor he was against Ukraine.
I could never really get my head around how he could be struggling so badly at Norwich but it’s easier to understand based on the other night.

Yeah that’s fair.
Not sure what he was looking at assists wise.
He may well be ready to kick on, I personally haven’t ever watched him and thought he looked up to much. If we sign him then hopefully he can produce numbers like he did this season from out wide. If we don’t then hopefully this is a purple patch and someone like Hearts or Aberdeen get lumbered with a dud :greengrin

Quality player who has had a bad season. Looked like he just didn't fit into the Norwich set up and the disappointment of relegation wouldn't have helped. Looks like he took all that into the Ukraine game and had a stinker. Still young, still lots to learn.....21/22 season will have been his first real taste of failure, I have got no doubt he will use the lessons of the year past and become an even better player for it.

Charles Cook from limited viewing is an improvement on what we had last season and currently have, Hungbo too.
Improvement is what we need, players that will come in and play straight away is what we need.
We have quite enough squad players to be going on with, give me quality that will play now, whether its any of the two mentioned above, or others the manager wants.

He went to Motherwell at the end of last season didn’t he? How did he do there?
Am I getting confused with the young guy they got from Sheffield Wednesday?

Liam Shaw the young boy from Wednesday went to Motherwell.
The other Ex Wednesday boy went to a Belgian team and I think he was meant to have done very well.

Is it just me that thinks Billy Gilmour is vastly overrated, totally out of his depth at a big club like Chelsea and if Everton honestly think he will take them forward, then good luck with that !
Did you not see him against England?
The guy is pure class. To me it feels like he needs to somewhere that will play him and appreciate him. He’s world class and he’s Scottish!

Macey isn't as bad as some make out. Steady enough if not spectacular, would be happy for him to be the back up to Marshall. At his age he no doubt wants to play though so seems logical - waste of resource running with 4 senior keepers so something has to give.

Doesn’t make commercial sense, unless he’s been told he can find a new clubIt does if it frees up his wage and a club is willing to sign him direct. He was our number one until Marshall so is likely on a decent wage. That can be recycled for someone who'll contribute rather than sit on the bench. Kev is a very good back up and might be able to push on to become first choice now.
That's commercial sense.

My thinking as well, the club thinks Kev will benefit from a couple seasons training with Marshall with a view to becoming number 1. He’s a more than able backup so makes sense to let Macey leave.

We won’t get any real kind of fee for Macey if he is to move on, it’s probably in our best interest to free up his wages now that Marshall is here so doubt we will try and hold out for a decent fee and risky losing the deal.

Its really unlikely anyone is paying a fee. If he goes, I think we'll be freeing him. He very likely has been told he can find another club because we'd signed a new keeper already.

The mutter in the gutter recently is that Matt Macey wants to go back down south and that Hibs won’t stand in his way.
Couldn’t see him wanting to play second fiddle to David Marshall.
Maceys a decent keeper and should be able to pick up a a gig in a lower league English club.
The. question is whether Kevin Dabrowski wants to spend another season on the bench if Marshall keeps fit and in form. What I’ve seen of Dabrowski indicates that he could be a good acquisition for a Championship club or a Premiership one who’s main ambition is to stay in the top tier and avoid relegation.
Northernhibee
05-06-2022, 09:17 AM
At a club like Hibs Macey isn’t good enough to be first choice but would want too high a wage to be backup. He’d do well at someone like Motherwell, Kilmarnock etc. but his shot stopping stats nor his distribution are any better than average.
Nice guy and a good pro so no ill feelings but a notable downgrade on Marciano and hopefully Marshall.
Doesn’t make commercial sense, unless he’s been told he can find a new club
Coat us nothing as did Marshall, Macey going frees up his wage for Marshall, plus I'd think Macey would be on a decent wedge considering where he came from.

Making Dabrowski cup keeper would be a good start to help his development and keep him happy game wise, a season learning from Marshall will do him no harm at all.

I agree, all the aspirational talking and discussions on tactics and formations is irrelevant really. The only thing that fixes it is by signing quality players. If we can’t afford to do that then we’re no further forward.

Time and time again we’ve signed 19 year olds and people on here are expecting thme to be first team picks. They rarely are, they’re for develelopment and hopefully come good.
Older pros at the end of their career aren’t the answer either. We get limited benefit out of the likes of Grant Holt and Jonaton Johansson although there is the occassional glimmer of glories past.
We might get away with signing a quality 37 yr old goalie but for what? Two years? I think we would have been better sticking with , and developing Macey and getting a decent fee.
Looking forward to seeing what quality we get in.

''time and time again'' really? When were these times? Don't think we've ever consistently signed kids and expected it to work. Although most of our best players in the last 20 years have been under 23 when they joined.

Not if the owner's business plan is to sign them up for free or cheap and sell on at a profit. All the signs are that's exactly what his strategy is. Macey was with Arsenal and going nowhere. Hibs signed him, initially on loan and then perm, to get in a half decent replacement for Rocky and to stick him in the shop window. He'll generate a fee of some sort.

In the modern game where you play out from the back you need a keeper who does more than save shots. He starts the attack and Macey is suspect on distribution, vision and quick thinking. By the time he makes his mind up what to do all our outfield players tend to have been closed down.

I'd seriously hope they have the capacity to work on multiple signings at the same time rather than one at a time.
I don't disagree that Goalkeeper is probably not the critical position right now although, as others have pointed out, there's a certain style of play that requires a certain type of keeper. Whether that's one we're shooting at or whether Marshall fits that remains to be seen.

There won't be any news this week. No new players this window or in January. We will be going as we are with any injury crisis supplemented by under 18s and women's team players. Now stop refreshing the page and get to work - the jubilee holidays are over

Once again, Hibs leading the way. This is the kind of innovation we love to see.

Another SPFL team trying to sign Ben Woodburn who was on loan at Hearts last season. The other team isn’t named but forgetting his Hearts link a second, he probably fits the mould of the type of signing we will be after.
Wonder if we could be the other club interested in him?

Makes no sense whatsoever as we have Marshall now who will be our No.1. Clark won't move to be No.2 when he's just got into the Scotland setup.

From his point of view he will increase his wage and back himself to claim the number 1 shirt. From our point of view we need more than one decent goalkeeper, especially as one of them is 37 years old.
Makes plenty sense.

It makes sense for us but not for him. He can easily get the kind of money we’d offer elsewhere and be guaranteed a game every week.

Yeah I get that, just think LJ might be the type of manager that looks at him and backs himself to get more out of him than other managers have managed.
Clearly had/has lots of potential, just needs to find the right team at the right time with the right manager to make the most of it.
Whether that’s us or not just now I don’t know but I suspect LJ would look past his most recent loan spell.

Is he an out and out forward or more of a winger/number 10 though.
If we are looking at him, and there’s no suggestion we are, I’m guessing we’ll do a bit deeper digging than his Wikipedia page to try and see why he’s not fulfilled his potential and what would be different at Hibs compared to his other clubs. Still only 22.

I doubt either would go down well. McCart looked good in St J's double winning season alongside Gordon and Kerr though looked awful throughout last season.
I suspect Hendry will be seen as a cheap option that is not good enough though personally I think he would prove to be a good signing, I like him and he seems to be improving

Really hope not. As for really poor I suspect you mean poor after his serious injury, not poor as a near 20 goal a season striker beforehand! Surely would depend on whether or not the close season and pre season gets him back fully fit - if it did he would be a huge asset, if not then yeah, sadly would have to move on. Still, 'really poor' is more than harsh

That's a shame if true. We'd been crying out for a player like him for years. Handful for defenders. Ideal in this league. I'd have liked to see him get a full pre season under Johnson and kick on but can understand if he wants his own players in. Not sure i'd be looking to move on a Welshman right now with WC places up for grabs. We all know what Doidge is capable of.

I’ll be quite pleased if Doidge is away to be honest. I’m not as harsh as the previous poster as I can see what he’s brought to the table when fit. I really want loads of pace and energy in the final third though and I don’t see that as being his game.
Good luck to him though if he’s away, seems like a right likeable guy and did well for us in spells.

Prior to injury (and no, sustaining an Achilles Injury doesn't make you "injury prone") Doidge had scored 32 goals in 64 competitive matches for Hibs. Pretty decent, especially given the way he was used so poorly by Heckingbottom during his initial run of games.
It's all about opinions, but some people's views are such obvious gash, it's hard to ignore them.

Seems a lot fo folk have short memories.... Doidge, Nisbet and Boyle were on a great run of goals at the end of the 20/21 season and they started off reasonably well in 21/22.... until Doidge got injured and Ross started playing only 1up front.
After his injury Maloney still tried playing Doidge as a lone striker which we all know just didn't work... it didn't work under Hecky, Ross nor Maloney....
Get Doidge back to full fitness and sign a striker who can play off him and a midfielder who can drag us up the pitch and we would be daft not to keep him.
If the rumours are true its disappointing, but if he isnt the type of player LJ wants then we have to trust his vision....
