No offence intended as this isn’t directed just at you but phrases like the knives are out annoy me a bit.
This is a fans forum to discuss potential signings. It is possible to give an opinion on players or the thought of signing them without it meaning we are writing them off.
If we are all just to tow the party line and say everyone is brilliant there’s really no point in this thread.
Indeed, if now is not the right time for a moan, i dont know when is, have people not watched us slide into this shambles?
We have a team/squad left at this moment in time that is relegation candidates. The names that have appeared recently are at best squad fillers and thats being kind.
Do we not have enough of them already?

Played 48 games last season. Sounds interesting.
I’m not keen on judging players by number of games played, could just be the team or level was really *****.
Looks like Wigan are linked with him too though which is promising as he’s obviously stood out in the games he played.
In the face of it, could be a good signing, would be good if the poster who dropped his name in the thread came back and gave us a bit more meat on the bones though. Without wanting to get too nippy about it, quite annoying when people just say a name with nothing else. It’s like they’re in a rush to get in before someone else says their name.

Interesting
25 year old centre back who is out of contract. Played loads of games for MK Dons and was captain at times.
Predominantly played right of a back 3 and apparently very comfortable on the ball and playing out from the back
Still don't know if it's a rumour or just a player a poster likes the sound of.

Robertson is certainly a handy player, and crucially left sided.
I saw a bit of him at Blackpool, was not good enough for us then, has he improved recently?

That’s literally the point of the speculation thread.
People will post rumours, wherever they come from, and posters reply with their thoughts on that rumour.

Pre-season training started back today and we’ve not managed to add to the squad yet. From a recruitment perspective, that’s a shambles.
The good news is that there’s plenty time to turn things around and get good players in, just now though, I’m not filled with confidence, especially when you see good players on our doorstep that would have been ideal for us, going elsewhere.

Agree that we need players in the door, but why is it a shambles? If we sign 6 players by monday then is it no longer a shambles? We will clearly sign players, some things take longer. If we sign a player at the start of the window then does that make them better players? Im not sure it does.

SDG will get time providing the club makes a few good signings and moves on the deadwood. If we don’t and there’s a lot of the same faces in the squad there’ll be a lot of frustration understandably.
The manager takes the brunt of it but ready it’s those behind the scenes that need to pull it out of the bag over the summer

I feel SDG will get time, in fact if we are poor this season i personally think the board will get it big time, protests, pitchforks and snipers on rooftops for them.
This is their last chance in my opinion before it gets really nasty for them.:chop:

Presumably there’s a reason the players started back today? I would assume this was designed to give the players the right amount of preparation for the new season? I’m not suggesting we should have had all our transfer targets in by now, I don’t think it’s unreasonable given the amount of work needing done to the squad to have prepared in such a way that we could have had one or two in.
Maybe we will get an announcement later and we have signed players for today, if so then great.

I think SDG will get cut far more slack than some of our previous managers if he starts badly purely because of who he is. I think the LC groups is actually a blessing in disguise. Hopefully build a wee bit of momentum and start the league strongly.

Probably none. I don’t even think it’s about that. It’s about giving fans something to get up for again.
Great that you don’t mind, wish I didn’t. But even engagement on Twitter is down. It’d usually be full every post of ‘sign a player’ ‘that’s not player name’ etc etc. Those posts are still there, but nowhere near as much.
Some fans are just completely and totally fed up with the club.

Maybe the schools are finishing later this year ? I can't get upset about the lack of engagement on Twitter regarding 'thats not a signing' ' great but can they play up front'
I'm sure now the players are back in things will ramp up shortly.

Haha nah, I'm not overly worried about the Twitter engagement either, you could argue it's probably a good thing without the same old responses. Just an example of fan engagement being down and the feeling I get from folk I know who support us. A wee bit fed up.
Elie Youan, Ewan Henderson, Scott Allan
That's just going by that recent 'Hibs first signings of the last 15 year article the other day. To be fair, think they were on loan the season before probably with an option to buy so makes sense.
The thing is, how many times has a summer signing made a significant difference to our league performance?
Last year we spent just under a quarter of a million on a Dutch striker when we needed a centre half.
I'm ignoring the transfer window whilst the Euros are on. If we do sign a player, I'll then ignore their YouTube CV until we see how they perform on the pitch.

If we just wanted someone who was reasonably solid/consistent we should have just kept Hanlon.
I want us to sign good players that could progress on to a higher level.
That policy has worked wonders the past few years. There are absolutely no guarantees. Players could or might progress up the ladder but we’ve failed. Robertson is a few years younger than PH and looks like someone who could come in and do a job right away. The promising youngster project has failed and we need some experienced guys who I’m sure MM and DH will be confident of starting with from day 1.

To clarify, I never said a promising youngster.
It could be a good player that’s playing at a similar or lower level to us just now but career is on an upward trajectory.

How can the club be expecting to sell lots of season tickets when there is absolutely no news of any decent new signings.
Folks would sooner hear news about new players rather than management appointments or stadium improvements.
Hopefully there will be some positive news soon or I predict a long hard season ahead.

I think David Gray was one :cb
There is no doubt a benefit to having a player in for the start of pre-season but it's pretty marginal in the big scheme of things. I'd be pleasantly surprised if we'd already made a significant signing really given that the dust has only just settled following SDG's appointment along with his coaching team.
I have no doubt a lot of work will have been done by now though - I would imagine that MacKay and Gray will have been deep in discussion and targets will have been identified. It's blindingly obvious we need a quality Goalie and central defenders and I would hope to see some movement on that front sooner rather than later.
Midfield is more of a problem in that we have about half a dozen midfielders who have struggled to make the grade so far and we will probably have to move some out before we get more in. Up front we have one striker in Vente who struggled for form last season, two wide players in Boyle and Youan who can offer something but are both rumoured to be away - plus McKirdy and MacKay who both had to go on loan to get games in.
Basically we need quality signings right through the team - MacKay is going to have a very busy summer.

I think RB is the one position we can guarantee we won’t be signing. Between Cadden, Miller and Megwa we have 3 players who will want to be playing first team football and at least one is going to be frequently disappointed.
None of the 3 are world beaters but all 3 are just about good enough. Megwa is a bit more of an unknown but very good potential.

I think Strain is a very good signing for Dundee United in fairness, especially if played at right wing back. Really good crosser/passer, brilliant set pieces and a goal threat. Out of contract and knows the league, it’s a no brainer for them.
Must admit I did think he was younger than 27 though.

Along with around 15k others.

Because there's games he disappears in .
For what its worth , what you where answering to I hope he is at training and Gray has every player available for selection.
Though if we don't add to midfield this summer and go with much the same midfield , I'd worry the same inconsistencies will reappear and we will struggle to dominate games again at times .

I know they need a bigger squad for Europe but that's already 30 and you'd think they've not finished in the transfer market. Too big a squad can be problematic.

I don't really get why Joe apparently disappears but it's basically never said about others. Joe rarely, very rarely disappears. Even on his bad days, he's involved, getting on the ball, tackling, fouling. Boyle can go 60 minutes without a touch. Vente goes about 6 weeks without a touch. Your favourite Campbell really can go entire games without getting near the ball. Joe is far more involved in play than these guys, and basically everyone else on average.
He has poor games, but disappearing? Completely untrue.

As it stands I’d say Clarke is a good keeper for the league and even back up they’ve good experience.
Defensively I would say they have 3 or 4 good centre halves and very good options at left back. They’ll probably play a back 3 again so I would say a back 3 of Kent Halkett and Kingsley, with Cochrane on Penrice left wing back is good.
I’d say centre mid they’re weak other than Baningime but have good attacking midfield options in Dhanda and Spital.
Going forward obviously Shankland is the main one but have always rated Mackay and Boyce (if he can stay fit). Forrest and Vargas are also handy players who chip in.

As to our current midfielders , yes Campbell would be my favourite , in he's one of our own though I don't necessarily want to see him starting every week .
I'd like to see us take in better .
Which brings us back to your favourite in Newell , I'd like to keep Newell though him playing every week when he's been part of a failing midfield , no thanks to that one !
An injury / suspension to NMW and we are back to a choice of Levitt , Newell or JDH again . Surely that must give you some grounds for concerns going into the new season ? .
Something I hope we try and fix this summer .
Newell has disappeared in games though that's just my opinion . At 31 it's not any better he's getting either.

Why is it a negative that we weren't in for this Robert Clarkson chappy?
By all accounts we were supposedly in for him and now that he’s signed for Dundee we apparently were never in for him.
That’s negative news! Whether it’s true or not is up to the individual to evaluate but it’s a negative slant is not?
As I’ve already said, hopefully we get some positive news in the coming days and weeks in which I’m sure there’ll be plenty hopefully. 🤞

It’s with some trepidation that I post this after my “RANT” thread got halted in its early stages. Mostly due to a few supporters that can’t argue their point and who’d rather try and out you as being a Jambo! 🙄 There were a few reasonable responses and for that I thank those people for being sensible but unfortunately we seem to have moderators who can’t handle supporters trying to have a serious discussion on a football forum! 🙄
Anyway, so I’ll digress.

The most important position on the field for me being an ex goalie myself.
The very thing that holds the spine of the team together is the goalkeeper.

Which players there make you think they have a strong squad ? 2 years ago Gordon had a great season , last year Shankland . Gordon is unlikely to be their first goalie again and Shankland may well leave ( personally I hope he stays on a huge new contract ) but apart from them I don`t see any players who are likely to prove superior to other non OF teams . Strength in numbers perhaps but with so many midweek games they will need a bigger squad .
Probably a better way of describing it would be to say it is unfortunately a more settled squad ☹️

He was the goalie that had a howler against us for Arsenal but since then he’s had a couple of good loan spells and was League 2’s goalie of the season last year.
I know McDermott has left us now but if he has been involved in laying the groundwork for the summer, he could be a goalie that was on our radar as BM will have known all about him from his time at Arsenal.

Regarding the midfield I think we will be looking for a number 10 role player who can create instead of relying on Boyle and Youan/Maolida who all 3, at least 2 won't be here next season, unless Henderson stays 😁
We have to do something in the upcoming weeks regarding ins and major outs, maybe waiting for Youan to leave and hopefully taking the time to get the right players.

You can’t judge them based on number of games played.
They’re two entirely different people and players even if their careers up to this point look similar on paper.

Yeah, that’s loosely my point and it’s important that point isn’t lost when discussing players.
You’ll get great signings coming from ***** levels and you’ll get ***** signings coming from good levels.

You stick some money on that and let me know how you get on.
I don't think we will, but I don't think Joe will be to blame. About 20 players to replace first.

Wow that's on the level of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.
You called me out as being a Jambo on another thread and some have decided to jump on the bandwagon.
I’m a forgiving type though and I’ll happily accept your apology and anyone else’s if they’re sensible enough.
I have my own opinions on what’s going on at our club at the moment and few of them are positive, hence my negativity.
I’m not interested in towing any Hibs.net narrative of being super duper positive because let’s face it the clubs in an awful mess right now.
If we hopefully manage to start making good progress I’m sure my negativity will subside but from what I read on this site it’s mostly people telling us all is ok and there’s nothing to see here.
Their touchiness tells its own story.
You’ve called out the admin team in a number of posts across multiple threads, now this Hibs.net narrative nonsense. If you don’t like the chat on the site, no one’s forcing you to be here.
As for that narrative being super duper positive, have you actually read anything on here? There’s plenty criticism being shared, and from the admins too. It’s not hard to find if you bother to read what’s there and not just your own opinion being shouted loud and repetitively

Those were the days when Greece had a team that was the envy of the known world.
We are suggesting different names for the person who is heading up recruitment.
Ian Gordon, Malky Mackay and David Marshall.
The job is actually vacant.
Thats very worrying.

I’ll be honest with you, Van Veen and Vente has got me particularly horny. It might be the red wine, perhaps it’s delusion…either way, Mrs Pedantic is in for one helluva pestering.

If you’re going to post about the structure and titles multiple times a day because you haven’t been invited in this time to talk to them about it then why don’t you pick up the phone and ask them to talk you through it?

Ryan Reynolds needs to be careful. Some things get worse the more times he brings them back. Deadpool, the hitman's wife...

Fortunately he didn’t revive Green Lantern. Maybe he does know his limits!

Malky will be in charge, and from what he said Marshall has a key role in it as well. Who else needs to take charge?

Mackay and Marshall will do for me, Matty. Gordon needs to declare himself that he is in no way involved in sourcing or recommending players.

I know there’s absolutely no chance and he’ll probably be announced Monday. But I hope Mackay manages to speak to Dhanda and make him change his mind and sign for us instead

I hope he's announced for them Monday and we do our own thing. If Malky's only resource is players he's managed at Ross County then we are in trouble.

So if went out and bought 10 players tomorrow that were absolutely mince and couldn’t get a game for Cowdenbeath would that make you feel better?

Who is saying we’d only be targeting players he’s managed at Ross county though?
Dhanda is a good player imo, regardless of where he came from or who knows him
Mackay also recruited Harry Clarke, Charles Cook and Joseph Hungbo at county…..
They to me suggest he at least has good contacts and is able to convince good players to move to a place many would consider undesirable due to location

What job is vacant? People are just making stuff up now because we don't have someone with a specific job title!?
