Thats ridiculous, unless Rocky is leaving imminently then theres no way he will be first pick. Suspect the paper is just making things up.
I think (could well be wrong) what the paper is concluding is after spending half a season on a bench at Charlton when expected to be first choice, that the player and Preston will only be happy sending him to a club where he’s going to be first choice?

If that is the case then theres no way can guarantee him first team football - unless Rocky has a move planned this window.

I'm not sure it matters to PNE as to whether he's 1st choice or not, but it probably matters to Maxwell. You can see the logic from our perspective, we get him on loan & check him out for his last season under contract. If he succeeds we have opportunity to sign him for free. Sounds from the article we only have to up our contribution a piece for it to happen. I believe NL may rate Rocky higher than PH does. With the style that PH wants us to play then Rocky's rocky distribution comes under greater scrutiny.

Been given assurances he’d be first choice according to this...

As a defensive full back I don’t think we could do any better than Lewis, same applies to Gray on the right side, both excellent when their job is to defend.
There were times last season though when we were in promising attacking positions and I thought if we had a left back who was better going forward and had better delivery we’d be a better side.
Unpopular opinion but Sean Mackie isn’t for me and I personally don’t think he’ll make the grade in the first time, imo he’s not any real competition for Lewis so if we were to bring in another LB to compete with Lewis that’d be fine with me. Likewise though if we don’t sign a LB and we go into next season with him as left back I’ll be absolutely fine with that.
Excellent post...….exactly my thoughts on it. If Lewis could actually take his man on on the outside instead of continually cutting back and going inside we probably wouldn't have him as he would be playing at a higher level. its his one big weakness as the rest of his game including his crossing has improved massively over the last couple of years.

Absolutely, looks a real talent and would certainly suit the league.
Started his career as a forward
Maybe helped by the fact wee Lewis was playing at left midfield and allowed him to bomb forward.

Lewis Holtby is a 28 year old German international that has played over 100 games for Hamburg.

Badly needing some quality up front. As it stands, just Flo and Shaw, with Flo possibly on his way out. Would like us to start the season with at least four forwards.

He'll have learned from last season (under Lennon) that we need 4 strikers - which I think we will have in place come start of the domestic league season. We are not converting the chances we create often enough so it's a priority to have four in place - two more will be added once we secure McNulty and sell Kamberi (I think). I'd like to keep Flo but he needs to up his game - but there's a big player in there if he does. Not sure the club feels the same.

Did he only play with one striker at Barnsley?
He’s had to make the most of what he had since he joined Hibs, that doesn’t mean he’ll want to play with one up front when he’s had the chance to get his own players in.

Like pretty much every manager we have had in recent times, I imagine some games we will play with 1 up front and some games with 2. How many will depend on the opposition and what players are available.

Totally agree. However we don't have a striker who can play as a lone striker. Which will mean we need to sign at least two more strikers. If one is McNulty he can't play up on his own either.
Someone like McNulty can play up top easily on his own if you have width like Boyle, Horgan and Newell offer, add to that Allan and there is plenty creativity there.

Certainly agree that Heckingbottom will look to create a squad which is flexible in terms of tactics. We have seen in the games he has been in charge of lots of tweaks to shape and tactics during the match. He has more knowledge about the way the opposition play now so he will be able to adapt to that.
I reckon that if we have Kamberi, McNulty and Shaw then we will still need one more striker in the squad. Even if we play one up front in a few games.

I know nothing about lewis hornby and by all means he is a great prospect but im not convinced great prospects on loan are a good way to go. On a permanent signing yes but he seems like the type who would take a while to adjust, get better and as soon as he starts hitting from the season is up. U never know though.

We need a target man so we can mix the options. McNulty has excellent movement and link up (as does Shaw in my opinion)...Flo is a good striker but his first touch is very poor as is his physical game - far too often on his backside. We need a focal point for games where we have much of the possession and need to win by that scrappy goal off 'scraps' and knock downs. I'd love to see our stats for finishing after crosses into the box but I'd say they would be poor. If you have a player who can really unsettle defenders then the likes of McNulty and Flo will flourish, as will the midfielders. We don't get into the box quick enough or often enough for me.

U may have seen him play but assuming you havent made many everton reserve games or more than 1 or 2 scotland u21 games this year what makes you think that?
As i said previously on this thread, these young guys are without doubt good players but by the time they are up to speed and starting to produce what they can the season is done and they are away, leaving us to try and find another.
Maybe this guy is the exception but even if he is, we still have to find another next summer, because he will be off to a bigger club.
For me, 2 new strikers, both on permanent deals.
Or loans of older, out of favour players where a permanent deal the year after may be possible e.g. mcnulty.

Nope - needs to 'turn up' for 30 games a season, not 6 or so. Wasn't convinced he was injured (for as long as he was) and by all accounts the most skilful at the club when he trained. Mental toughness required for that young man or he'll drift down the leagues.

Agyepong included in Ghana’s 23 man squad for African Cup of Nations
1st game is against Benin on 25th June
Anyone think we’ll see him back at ER next season?
Nope. Personally wouldn’t want him back either. Last thing we need is a player that is going to be more on the treatment table than the park.
Wish him all the best though.

Newspaper article linking us in a roundabout way with just released keeper Tom Glover of Spurs.
Apparently we did have him on trial at one point in his career.
Glover is young, Sydney born and had a loan period last season with Central Coast Mariners, where he did not impress and returned to Spurs.
Can’t see us signing him.

He could do a job for Hibs, Hearts or Aberdeen but can't see Rangers being interested in him if they are looking to challenge Celtic.
Not a prolific goal scorer but would provide us with the option of a strong powerful striker who can hold it up and score from headers at set pieces.

I said the same a few weeks ago Billy. They are buying decent SPL players but Greg Stewart and Magennis are going to do nothing to help them progress in Europe. They must be relying on Celtic self destructing too if they think they can win the SPL with that mob.....

By "an option we rarely have" you're meaning a player who's physically a handful or something else?
I'm quite strongly of the opinion that we shouldn't be going for a forward who we suspect before signing won't be prolific.
I realise we're on a budget but I still think our aspirations should, for example, stretch to physical handful who also scores a fair whack of goals at this level.

Usually I’d agree with you but I think in a decent side (which id hope we could be) he’d contribute around the 10 goal mark. If we had a more prolific striker as an option as well I think he’d be worth having.

My mate in Carlisle messaged me last night to say he had heard Devitt is signing for us or has signed.
Would be chuffed with that. Did a wee bit of Twitter investigation and a few Plymouth fans commenting on a thread seemed to think he was signing for them. Saw this also:
http://argyle.life/transfers/

Rumour: Plymouth Argyle manager Ryan Lowe “would like” Jamie Devitt to join him at Home Park
Age: 28
Position: Central midfielder, attacking midfielder, winger
This season: 12 goals and 8 assists in 38 appearances
Source: Twitter (https://twitter.com/ChrisErrington1/status/1138486168142647304)
Verdict: As sources go, direct quotes from the manager himself are very much top of the pile. Chief Argyle reporter Chris Errington mentions that Lowe “bumped into” Devitt in Manchester. The new Argyle manager was quoted as saying on Devitt “Is he a good player? An unbelievably good player. Would I like to have him at Home Park? Yes I would.”
This clearly steps the rumour up a notch. We were pretty sure Argyle were at least interested in the player from Alan Nixon’s tweet yesterday. There can be no doubt any more. Argyle may not sign Devitt. Indeed, other clubs may be in a better position to sign the player. However, it is clear that Argyle’s interest here is very genuine.

For the most part we all think highly of Porteous but it's interesting that I read that a couple of German clubs are after Liam Morrison at Celtic - if that is true then does it mean we are over estimating Porteous a little bit?

For the most part we all think highly of Porteous but it's interesting that I read that a couple of German clubs are after Liam Morrison at Celtic - if that is true then does it mean we are over estimating Porteous a little bit?
HH, they would get Morrison practically for free
Let’s just get Ryan back fit and healthy for the new season!

Porteous has a long way to go before anyone is paying money for him. Dives in way to often. Needs to learn to stay on his feet.

Ryan's stats are better than Scott McKenna at Aberdeen 'like-for like' on games played (goals scored, conceded, pens, clean sheets) and they value him at £8 million. He does however need to work on his discipline, agreed.

You honestly think hibs would reject 3 million for Porteous?
I love him as a players but he’s only really done it for half a season and suffered a horrendous injury. He has huge potential but if someone offers 3 million tomorrow he will be off.
If someone offered £3m for Porto tomorrow do you reckon we would sell without even negotiating?

No it most likely means Celtic youth players have greater exposure across Europe than ours due to participation in the UEFA Youth League.

3m plus add ons sounds like a good deal for well given he has only played for one season and only has a couple of u21 caps.
Hypothetical question, if hibs were offered the same for porteous now do you think hibs would take it?
Yes Hibs would rip their hands off.

Serious European clubs know about Porteous and he is being monitored. Not saying they will try and buy him, but they are defo keeping an eye on him. Hibs also know this.

I get that Billy but 3M isn't a lot of money for a Bundesliga club - the important thing is whether they think they can sell him on for a profit......

Think that’s a different argument. A lot of young boys (16 year olds etc) move to bigger clubs quite freely. We had Porteous signed up on a long contract quite early.
He’s a very good prospect and player but needs time to develop.

Well if someone’s first bid was 3 million then no obviously not because you would imagine there would be room to ask for more.
But it’s more likely someone offers 1 million and we get 1.5 with add ons, no one is going to offer 3 million straight away for Porteous at this stage.

How big are the clubs-any names? I rate him very highly. His weaknesses are all solvable, he looks pretty complete to me and is a born leader.
Apologies, i took this thread a bit off topic. I had simply asked r.e. porteous as he is of a similar age and has also only played one season (not even a full one) of first team football.
The general consensus seems to be that 3m+ would be a great deal for hibs at this time, which i agree with, and i think the same applies for turnbull and well.
Anyway, i am very hopeful of seeing porteous captaining hibs and playing for scotland before he moves on to bigger things!

I'd heard that the Andy Murray link up with Porteous wasn't exactly to ensure a long and happy career at Hibs but to ensure he did everything possible to head off to Englandshire for the big bucks asap.
The same person also told me that Hibs were in advanced talks to be sold to rich Americans.
Both of which I assumed to be nonsense.

On the other hand, FSG at Liverpool seem to be doing the right things (although their previous owners were also Americans and far less trustworthy).

Can't argue with that, as things stand Ryan will probably get a large number of straight reds in his career. That said, the level of aggression in his game will also mean that plenty strikers just don't fancy going up against him at all. Which is handy.

Ryan is an aggressive player, but for someone with that level of aggression to have had no red cards shows a remarkable level of control.

Unless there is a dramatic new TV deal on the horizon I don't see why anybody with cash would invest in a Scottish football team?
The rewards are simply not there, investors in Scottish football have an affinity to each team/area.

Don’t necessarily disagree with the general point you are making however people said the same about Abramovic when he got involved at Chelsea, nobody could see how he could make any money out of it.
I’ve no idea if he has or not but making money isn’t always the motivating factor for rich people to get involved in football these days.

ISTR that Abramovic loans Chelsea money and charges high interest rates on the loans. You don't really think that rich people spend their own money to buy and run football clubs. The Glazers acquired Man U with bank loans and promptly loaded the debt onto the club's balance sheet.
Rich people don't get rich by giving money away, neither do they stay rich by giving money away.

The source I heard both comments from is an interesting one.
It's not so much about him, but his sources.
Some of his sources are very well placed and spot on. I've had some top notch info from him before.
Some of his sources are absolute slavers and full of nonsense, and when you pass on stuff that came from them then you look like a complete numpty.
I've got to be careful passing on info from him because it is very difficult to sift the diamonds out of the absolute turd.
FWIW I sort of believe the Porteous one. I think both Hibs and Porteous realise we have a very saleable asset there and will be keen to capitalise as much as possible. The priority is most certainly not a long and successful sporting career with Hibs, although it will get nowhere without a strong start here.

Hibs obviously think it will help his development, not sure why anyone would view it as some sort of business decision.

I can't see the relevance of Abramovic imho he had made "new Russian money" and I am pretty sure Chelsea were ripe for picking giving both there location and potential, what then followed TV deals etc means he cant lose on the deal.
He has also "allegedly" used Chelsea for cleansing purposes:wink:
I just cant see why anyone would want to buy a Scottish club unless they have an affinity with the club/city

I know that and that's why they are trying to get shot of him I'm sure. He would have been even more lethal if he could have behaved himself - any way up I can't see Stewart scoring as many as Morelos did......
