I can easily believe Aberdeen can offer more than us. The stats and wages don’t lie
Over a whole squad, yes they will be able to pay more. We can and should compete for an individual player however, especially one our manager clearly wanted . We're now in a position where people have a stick to beat the club with. The Sun talking about us being blown out of the water etc. I stick to my opinion that it's an own goal.

He agreed a deal to join us in May.
We then cough up an extra 125k as him and his agent make a meal of the situation.
He rejects Aberdeen last night, they offer even more money today and he signs.
Doesnt appear to be very loyal and will jump ship whenever the money is.
Id be more disappointed if as a club we chucked all the money at him so he signs, when it doesn’t appear he particularly wants to be here anyway.
We will get another centre mid.

In some cases, not all ,for a top target we could and should be able to match, you clearly have very lilmited view on how budgets can be allocated
And just another point, do not bloody shout at me !

I'll probably take flak for this but this is piss poor from Hibs and it's a massive PR blow imo. I don't buy for a second we couldn't match what they're offering if we wanted to. I've thought for years that our wage structure is far too rigid.
Assuming we could, what's to say that Hecky/the recruitment team actually valued him that highly? We have a budget of our own, other positions to buy for and ultimately we will have put a monetary value on Ojo's signature. If another team value his ability and qualities higher than us then so be it, I'd prefer we let that happen than overpay for him to prove a point.

2 year deal announced tomorrow. Money talks. You can have the best infrastructure in the world but if a player is getting offered more then they are going to take the money everytime.
Until we can start matching them wage wise then we will never compete. Tragic.

I have no proof maybe that's the case but what we do know is we wanted him and we've lost out on him to a direct rival. We've had a lot of positive news recently and I would have liked it to continue whilst sending a direct message to one of our rivals. Missed opportunity in my opinion.

Agree with all of this. Settle on what we're prepared to pay & don't be dragged into a budding war.
The sheep have had to pay silly money for a 4th division player. Let's wait for the right player at the right price.

Heckingbottom said today that we are in a similar position with other players as we are with Ojo. Just got to wait and see if any of them decide to sign up.
Ojo, on paper, looked like what we needed. We’ve really got no clue how good he is. Let’s hope he ends up being pish and we can laugh heartily at Aberdeen chucking cash at him.

The guy has shown himself to be nothing but a mercenary if he ends up signing for Aberdeen.
Happy to sign for us and terms agreed as a free agent and we have even stuck with him and coughed up more money due to him and his agent making a balls up of the relegation clause in his contract only to turn around and sign for Aberdeen who probably didn’t know or care he existed until two weeks ago thanks to us.

It depends on your perspective. I don't believe throwing silly money at a 28yo 4th division player is playing a blinder.
If we had got him on a free last month that would have been a decent result - still a risk but probably one worth taking.
The press will try to stir it up but it's no dampener to me & I've no interest in their petty headlines. Ultimately the sheep have paid way over the odds & well done to Hibs for stepping away from it.

The infrastructure issue bugs me now in as much as I thought we were now concentrating on the first team and improving it We already have one of the best facilities in the league
What we need now is a team on the pitch capable of getting into top four and investment in that’
If we spend more on indoor training facility that deflects from the above and doesn’t produce better players Its scouts who identify young talent and then coaches that can develop them that counts

It’s the fact that we are going to lose out on a player to a rival who is paying more, whilst we have just cleared our debt but are talking about potentially shelling out more money for infrastructure, that is the source of frustration for some I think.

They can afford to pay over the odds because they have put a successful team on the park in recent years and reaped the benefits of that via Europe and challenging at the right end of the table.
Now this guy could be rubbish but given we chased him for long enough then I suspect he has something about him so in this case our unwillingness to compete has cost us.
I'm sure we'll get someone else though so we move on.

Irrespective of turnover I thought they had a new stadium and training centre to finance ??? If we can't match or better Aberdeen for players we want in this situation then surely our short term goal of being 'best of the rest' seem a tad unrealistic no?
Well we were 2 games away from finishing above them, in 2017/18 so it doesn’t seem that unrealistic to me. We’ll sign more players.

Oh I know...
Clearly EM wasn't as big a draw as extra ££.
We obviously agreed terms with him 2 months ago and then paid the fee after his agent cocked up. Aberdeen offered less than us(I assume why would he originally turn them down) and then went in with more, it can happen. What hecky said in his interview is key, it sounded to me like we could have paid more but we only want players who want to be at hibs and not purely for financial gain as we have a tight squad and anyone only there for money would be an outsider.
Each player has a price that we believe they’re worth in fee and wages and rightly so we will now go down another route “we have plenty others like this” is what hecky said in his interview.
McInnes said the other night they’d had plenty bids accepted for players but couldn’t agree terms etc, will dons fans be raging and assume ojo was a second option like we now will with whatever CM we sign? Probably not. People losing their minds for no reason.
Disappointing not get a player the manager wanted? Yes.
Season defining or lacking ambition? 100% not.

Clubs miss out on targets all the time, sadly it has happened to us now. Man United famously missed out on Robben and Mikel to Chelsea, United won everything in the 5 years after that. We have to find another player, not use this as an excuse and go again.

Agreed. It seems he didn't want to be here in the first place. I've heard stories of previous signings turning down offers to come to us. I think I read Adam Jackson had offers from the English Championship to come to us. A league where teams have massive budgets compared to us. But, he wanted to come to Hibs. I really don't think Ojo did.
At the end of the day, we may have missed out on a good player who would be an asset to us. On the other hand, we could have got him and he turned out crap. Then Hecky and the board get it tight for wasting massive wages on a dud. Time will tell if the decision not to get into an auction with Aberdeen was the right one.

The new ownership have already confirmed the transfer budget will remain as it was and have made it pretty clear that their focus is the academy and an outdoor pitch at EM.

According to the manager every player he’s signed to date has been his first choice target. We’ve gone out and got them in early. Ojo has been the odd one out in that regard but even then, we are only in this position because of his contract clause, otherwise he’d be a Hibs player already.
The manager has been very well backed this summer, as was the manager last summer as well.

Agreed, in terms of it being a PR blow. A new owner has come in and invested into the club, only for us to return to the status quo at the first hurdle, and you can see why many would be irked by that. Don't see us being bigger than Aberdeen anytime in the near future.

I think that’s a fair summary of the situation. It’s disappointing as we did want him and he sounded like the type of player we need, but I’m not going through get too worked up over a player I’ve never actually seen play + if we spend money on a fee I expect a player to sign for more than 2 years.

They must have wanted him enough to pay a fee tk get him

What people seem to be missing is, we got relegated from the league, along with Hearts, and the newco were working their way back-up.
This gave Aberdeen a 4-5 year free run at 2nd place, higher prize money and 5 straight seasons in the europa league, which im pretty sure they got through at least a round or two every season.
We seen the money being talked about for hibs getting through a couple last season. It's put Aberdeen ahead of us.
It's not miles though, it looks like we have lost out to them, which is dissapointing, but we will be closing the gap on them, and with the new owner in place will get us closer.
Let's just wait and see who we go for, id be much happier with a player called Omeonga from Seria A tham a S****horpe player to be honest.

Like it or not, he was a major target. We had planned on getting him for free and when that went South, paid a fee. Now we've been pipped by Aberdeen it seems. I think when a player is a major target of our management team, it's worth matching the likes of Aberdeen. Losing out to the Huns and Celtic I could understand, not Aberdeen though.

Ambition? the guy was a half decent English League 1 player who has just been relegation to their 4th tier, no one had heard of the guy until it came out, not a soul had even thought about him and now we're greetin over someone we don't even know will be a good player or not. He's oneof many decent midfielders knocking about the leagues, if the recruitment team are doing their jobs, we'll have other players lined up.

He was a centre mid for a team that just got relegated to league 2, he may be a very good player but we will have to wait and see. He is also 28 in a couple of months and appeared to not look interested last season after a very impressive debut season

It doesn't say. It is the simplest conclusion when a player has two clubs in for him and picks one over the other.
There are a couple of posters scraping around for reasons why hibs might have pulled out of a deal - as if it is impossible to comprehend that a player might actually not choose hibs.
Players don't have the emotional attachment to hibs or Edinburgh that we do. All things considered he picked Aberdeen. It happens.

Fed up reading about all how we need to concentrate on infrastructure, the academy etc. Not sure if it is just me but I find all this stuff terribly boring?
I wish the main priority for our new owners was to invest in the playing squad for the next few years. Establish us a real force in Scottish football finishing 3rd, 4th possibly even 2nd for the next few years and put together a few decent cup runs and maybe even win a trophy or 2. The crowds would swell, income would go up and then use this to invest in other aspects of the club!

Against the likes of St Mirren, Hamilton etc, but playing that midfield 3 against a Celtic or Rangers, I’m not so sure as we would get overrun. We would need a combative midfielder that does the dirty work in there and that would allow the likes of Scott Allan to do what they are good at.

Got to look at it from a neutral point of view, if you had no emotional connection between two teams and one of them offers you an extra £500 a week alongside the opportunity of playing in the Europa League you would probably take that offer.

Shinnie and Mackay-Stevens will be huge losses for them.
GMS barely kicked a ball for them second half of the season however shinnie is a big miss.
Bryson, Ojo and Hedges are all good signings on paper at least. Main isn’t a goal scorer but is handy and will suit there style of play to a tee.

Taking the time to read over how Ojo's behaved since the end of last season I'd rather we moved on and tried to bring back Omeonga.
Reading about Ojo brings back too many flashbacks of time under Fenlon and co when we had players turning up for a pay check and not giving one flying F on the pitch.
Not doubting the guy is a good footballer and the type we need in centre mid, but his attitude and behaviour puts me right off him.

May work both ways.
Has a very good season and interest comes in from the likes of Sevco/English championship teams next summer, he may end up behaving the way he done this summer at s****thorpe, we’d probably would be glad that we don’t have that sort of character in the team that thinks he’s bigger than the club and showing disrespect to the manager, players and fans.

Good read.
The likelihood of us needing an accomplished defensive midfielder in the side for the upcoming League Cup ties is slim so there is still time to bring in an alternative to Ojo.
In the meantime why not give young Ben Stirling a chance. He has all the physical attributes, has a good temperament and is a decent passer. Sometimes the solution to your problems is right there in front of you.

We'll he's made an agreement to join, on a pretense regarding his previous contract, hibs revived the deal, then he renaged on the previous deal for more money elsewhere. It doesn't point to a great deal of honesty or integrity.

Impressive stuff from the gaffer.
We’ve missed out on a target but if the player has changed his mind then I guess so do we. He was obviously happy with our contract before Aberdeen gazunped us.
Still weeks to go until the English transfer window closes. The season is almost upon us but 6 weeks left to sign players.

Yep, i agree, but that say accounts for about 200k, their turnover is about 6 million more than ours. What are the other commercial deals that we should be securing? What deals do Aberdeen have in place that we should?
Is it not the case they have a group of businessmen handing over cash? I genuinely dont know.
Commercial deals I don’t know about, but they have been successful in securing outside investment something we haven’t taken advantage of. As well as the American based businessman they also had the coupe who put in roughly £15M to allow them to pay off their debts.

Heckers may also be looking at the bigger picture here in terms of future negotiations. We’re rumoured to have come into a few quid recently, any players or agents thinking about trying to put a squeeze on us will know now we’ll not be pressed into paying too much for a player.
If we’d competed for a player financially with Aberdeen and won it could well have made future negotiations more difficult.
Possibly straw clutching at its very best but I’d rather try to remain positive at this stage of the season. Plenty time for negativity once the season starts properly.

The problem with the OJO deal is it’s been played out in the public domain. We will have probably lost out on better players so far this window, we just aren't aware of it. I get it’s worse he’s going to a rival but let’s not let it define our signing strategy and claims of it being a disaster etc, we have a limit, players have a value if we don’t think they are worth breaking that then we need to trust the club.
I get throw in the takeover and subsequent investment will have some expecting is to not be beat to a rival on players but in reality every club has their wage structure and I don’t see our structure changing too much so we can simply beat a rival to a signature so I’m comfortable with the situation. You open a can of worms, we break it for him, then mcnulty, then Omeonga and others want more and more, where does it stop.
We move on, good luck to the boy he has a family no doubt and at present Aberdeen are more appealing on recent history for outperforming Hibs and they have fairly exciting infrastructure plans so I can see the appeal.

Why though? They guys a professional footballer with no sentiments to Scottish football or either team so it looks like he's signed for the team offering him the most money. Like so many players before have. Football is such a short career so I don't blame him.
And on paper lets be honest, which team will be tipped by most pundits and experts to finish higher up the league? Which team has European football this season? Which team will be paying him more money? Its annoying but that's the reality of it.
We seem to have been able to find a few rare players who have stated in their interviews that they've really bought into the Hecky sales pitch before signing and don't seem to be money orientated. Ojo obviously isn't one of these players. I'm not going to waste my time hating him over it though.

I think Omeonga could play this role for Hibs... Still only 23, likes to tackle, energetic, tenacious and decent on the ball. Could he perhaps adapt his game to play as a holding midfielder? Cost less than Ojo and has 4 more years in him to develop. Just a thought..

Every chance he could play that role. My concern is that PH didn’t play him there when Milligan was here and then there’s the what if he tries him and he just doesn’t suit the role. We are left without a major piece of the puzzle until January. I’d much rather find someone suited for the role instead, than gamble.

If he could be disciplined and understand the role I think he would be just what we are missing. 5"10" dynamic in his approach to the game, doesn't go missing. I was thinking about Gattuso who played for the club formerly know as The Rangers and the impact he had there and then later with Milan & Italy. Both the same height and Gattuso developed that role later in his career. Just a thought.

Can’t imagine the Roberts rumour being true, we already have 4 very good options at centre half. It is literally the last position we need.
Defensive/centre mid x 2
Striker
Pacey winger (as I don’t see Newell as an out and out winger. One injury to Boyle or Horgan and we’re struggling)
I think
Omeonga plus another unknown defensive mid who will be a starter
Mcnulty

Do you know both of those things to be true or are you guessing?
Yes.

Porto will be be a wee bit off naw?
Daz and paul get injured ur struggling in there.happened last season when porto got a run with efe.
Think other areas needed more aswell.
But I wouldnt rule out another cb.
Hecky might want to play 3 at the back.

True, the more i think about it I really don’t get how Daz got a 4 year deal. I don’t get why they incorporated the player mentor and player within the same contract?
On defensive mids, would anyone take Aaron Tshibola? Last year of his contract and was a key part of Killies success last year.

Was simply to give him an ongoing role at the club - no playing commitments made - could be coaching, could be ambassadorial...thought it was a great touch - good to see people who care about the club being kept around the place....

I always thought that Tshibola was pretty rubbish whenever I saw him last season.
Can’t argue with how well Killie did though so maybe he was better or more effective than he looked.

I
Good solid tackler, link midfield and defense. Be able to read the game and play the easy passes.

Given that our commercial dept are turning away sponsors and we are no longer taking money from HSL then I think it’s fair to ask why we are losing out on players to Aberdeen?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We lost out on this player because circumstances changed, we ended up making a £125k offer plus a wage packed we thought was favourable for this player, Aberdeen offered more, we felt what we offered was enough for this particular player. We're not going to just up our offer just to get one over Aberdeen, Hecky has stated he only wants players who want to be here, not mercenaries just out for the cash.

Young lad Sadiki will step up, highly thought of. Hecky said in his interview that Ryan will join in with training this week but is a month or so behind everyone, it'll not take him long to catch up.

So we got into a bidding war with Aberdeen over Ojo.
With any auction you have to know your limit. What you can afford. What the item is worth to you. Can you get the same elsewhere for less. When to stop bidding.
No point winning the bidding just for the sake of it.
Buyer's regret they call it.
You don't worry about the other guy outbidding you. They have weighed up the factors as they see it and bid more. Or they have panicked and overspent.
Time will tell who got the good deal.
Too much angst on here with people using it to have a kick at the club. Probably the same people who would have been on here having a go about signing some no mark from S****horpe if the original deal had quietly gone through without the circus that ensued.
Get a grip.

Not saying I'd agree with it, but just to put out a counter-argument, with Aberdeen finishing higher in the league than us every year during this decade ambition could be put in the mix, but with a new chairman that brought a positivity and debt free environment plus the added HSL contribution, with our bigger crowds, better infrastructure and the fact 12 first team squad players have left since the end of last season, I suppose the final league position will be the decisive indicator.

Sometimes the solution to your problems is right there in front of you.Agreed....in the cold light of day is hes chosen Aberdeen over us because of money well quite frankly Hecky is spot on...we dont want him here. He is clearly all about chasing the £££ unlike some of our other summer signings who have turned down more cash to sign for us (Doidge and James). We now need to move on to other targets and forget him but we really need a midfielder or 2 in the next 3 weeks before the league begins

Need another forward too. Don't want to be in the same situation last season with just three forwards. Shaw as a back up just doesn't fill me with confidence or seems like a player that can change a game for you.

Anyone know the situation with Brandon Barker ? Was reported Celtic were interested but that appears to have gone cold. 1 Year left at City with no chance of 1st team football there. Is he available to go out on loan ? Would love it if he came back here.

He's on record saying he won't ever be back. Sure it was in a DM to a fan.

It's actually good that Hibs have said that's our offer take it or leave it.
Everyone knows there's a few extra quid at Easter road now but that does not mean getting into a Dutch auction over a player only Aberdeen and Hibs seem to want?

Has Ojo to Aberdeen been confirmed yet?
In any case I have no problem with him talking to different clubs. He'd be daft not to.

If I was Ojo sitting in my Aberdeen hotel this morning still trying to make my mind up what to team to sign for I think reading all the guff that's been written on here since news of the story was given out late yesterday afternoon would tip the balance in the Aberdeen direction.
If he does not want to sign for us that's his decision .I am sure Hecky would not be disappointed if he never came now because as he said he only wants players to buy into his plans.

What’s a Dutch auction?
Its a way of selling in which the price keeps going down until a buyer is found.

I think more money and European football might be more of a deciding factor in fairness.

Spot on. It's incredible how people who hadn't heard of this guy a few weeks ago are now intimately knowledgeable about every aspect of our offer for him. As for his agent playing a blinder, right! Because he's no longer a free transfer every penny the Sheep pay to Scunny is a penny less to Ojo. Time will tell.
