What a performance that was last night, a thoroughly deserved win. What a difference it’s made Doak coming through. If only we had a similar striker coming through. Hopefully Rory Wilson at Villa (former Rangers prodigy) is the next answer to a question we’ve long been asking.

Junior Hoilett won an international reprieve with Canada – and scored on his return against Suriname.
The Hibs star had missed his country’s last nine games after missing out on the Copa America squad and then failing to be called up for the three friendlies since.
But his individual form at Easter Road has been fairly good, even if the same can’t be said for the team.
And that saw Hoilett called up for the CONCACAF Nations League quarter-final against the Surinamese, who proved to be plucky opponents.
But the Hibees star popped up with a first leg winner after climbing off the bench for the final 12 minutes.
He is a very well respected member of the Canada squad and manager Jesse Marsch has been delighted that he instantly brought his personality back to the place after being away for so long.

Was reading about him the other day. Out of contract next summer and not signing a new deal as wants to play first team football. Villa threatening to freeze him out and make him train alone.

If he’s as highly rated as we all hope, and it appears he might well be the real deal, hope he goes to someone like Dortmund with a pedigree for developing elite talent.

Hopefully this is the last international break for a good while? Sure, Hibs have been c**p but the horribly stop-start nature of the season is doing nothing to help.
I don't get the point of the Nations League, plus having Boyle and Miller flying around the world so regularly isn't great. Bowie getting crocked on Scotland duty also still rankles.
Can't we just go back to the odd international friendly along with the qualifying groups for the WC and Euros?

if Czech beat Georgia we will be pot 3
My understanding is that if Georgia take any points off the Czechs or Estonia take anything off Slovakia we are pot 2. Georgia more than capable of taking points off the Czechs. If they win tonight they finish top of thier group and go up to league A. Fingers firmly crossed

The nations league is ‘supposed’ to replace friendlies for the most part, giving teams almost constant competitive matches, with the only friendlies being in the run up to major tournaments to allow national teams to get used to playing with one another.
What that doesn’t factor in, is when do you give fringe or up and coming players a chance, when you’re always playing competitive matches that are either qualifiers for major tournaments or nations league relegation/promotion matches

None are particularly easy, however neither of them games would be harder than the 3 we just took 7 points from.
Not sure who my preference is really.
Greece took England to joint points while the other 3 came second best to teams I feel we are at least equal to. Turkey give me the fear slightly though.

Groups are drawn in a few weeks so it would be irrelevant.
I did however just read that some World Cup qualifier groups will have winners of ties rather than set teams due to nations leave fixtures. I couldn’t my head around it though.
“ But wait ... Depending on how many teams need to play promotion and relegation playoffs, FIFA may have to juggle the pots slightly. For instance, if there are too many teams in Pot 3 who need to have March free, then a swap with Pot 2 or 4 might be needed. That's probably an issue for another day...
One more complication? As the UNL quarterfinals don't take place until March, eight of the 12 World Cup groups won't know their full lineup until then. Four of the groups with four teams will get "winners of quarterfinal tie," as they must be free for March and June. Four others get "losers of quarterfinal tie." Only four groups will be complete as of Dec. 13.”

Yes, you are correct. I'll delete my post as factually incorrect. :greengrin
From the BBC:
Does Nations League affect World Cup qualifying?
Four teams will qualify for a play-off to reach the World Cup via the Nations League.
They are the four best-ranked group winners who do not go on to finish in the top two of their World Cup qualifying group next year.
With teams in the top Nations League division highly likely to qualify for the World Cup through European qualifying - and many teams in the second tier too - it gives an extra incentive for teams across Leagues B and C.
By finishing top of Group B2, England are extremely likely to have a World Cup play-off spot banked, with the same situation facing Group B4 winners Wales.
Northern Ireland top C3, which gives them at least a chance, but Scotland are not in the running to get a play-off spot through the Nations League.
The four teams who get into the play-offs via the Nations League will be put in with the 12 teams who finish second in their World Cup qualifying groups - with four spots for 2026 up for grabs.
Seedings for the World Cup qualifying groups will largely be decided by Fifa world rankings - and not Nations League finishes.
The exception is that the top seeds will be drawn out of the teams who finish in the top two of each League A group - plus the four top countries by world rankings.
England's world ranking of fourth, third in Europe, means they are highly likely to be top seeds despite not having been in League A.

So to summarise, we might be better of with relegation from League A? Win our B league then go in to a play off?
SHODAN
20-11-2024, 01:20 PM
I have a nagging suspicion that UEFA decide whether to use rankings or Nations League placements for World Cup seeding entirely by whether sufficient numbers of "big" teams are in League A or not.
Czech Republic, Ukraine, England, Greece, Haaland (Norway), Sweden in League B or below? Scotland, Hungary, Bosnia in League A? Yeah let's do world rankings this year.

Pretty sure League A teams get put into some of the lower playoffs if enough teams qualify automatically, so we'd still be virtually guaranteed one.

I can’t quite understand how we’ve ended up there to be honest. How does participating in Euro 2024 (albeit poorly) and being in nations league pot A (coming 3rd with the most points out of any 3rd placed team) end up with us being in a pot with the likes of Montenegro, Finland and Iceland whilst teams that didn’t make it to the euros and participated in lower levels of the Nations league than us slot in to pot 2? 🤷🏻*♂️
I’d certainly say that we are the pot 3 team that everybody will want to avoid and there are still favourable draws to be had with a bit of luck but it’s a big blow unfortunately. The fact that we were 1 Portugal goal away from pot A is pretty frustrating.

Should be an interesting challenge to see where Scotland are at against a team we've not played much. Greece were good in beating England at Wembley - something we've not done for a long time.

How it works in to the qualification path for the World Cup becomes a bit on the complicated but the Nations League has been a massive improvement on meaningless friendlies. Hampden was sold out for all three group games and will be sold out for the Greece game.
This tie decides whether we stay in the top section or are relegated to the second section. If we’d finished second in our section we’d have been top seeds for the World Cup draw so the games come with a lot of importance.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle's match against Queen of the South has been called off after the Highland club made the 245-mile trip south to Dumfries.
The League 1 game has been postponed following a pitch inspection.
The Inverness team travelled down for the match on Friday.
Queen of the South said: "The pitch was playable this morning but after heavy rain and frozen temperatures under the pitch affecting drainage the pitch is now water logged."

He’s 29 years old and has played a fair chunk of his career at that level. It was his spell with us that was a step down and I think his failure to stand out here was probably more reflective of our recent troubles rather than his own ability.

van Dijk channeling his inner Rocky Bushiri bringing the ball out the back there. Loses it and now it's a pen to Southampton.

Suspect call from the ref. Took an age to give a pen. It’s def outside the box
Edit: wow a pen given

I cannae understand that at all. That's a freekick not a penalty.

Robertson’s foot was on the line and the contact was between the calves of each player so was closer to goal line still which would make it in the box.

The contact is up at Robertsons knee which is on the line for me.

Robertson’s foot wasn’t on the line, was outside the box although I didn’t see the knee contact so if that was on the line then fair enough.

Yup, the fact the feet were on the line and the actual contact was closer to goal makes it beyond doubt for me.

Our VAR would have made their mind up just now.

Liverpool were like heedless chickens at the back there. 3 of them chasing the one player, leaving another one completely free in the middle.
2-1 Southampton
Liverpool pissing about at the back 🤔
