Definitely. Would not surprise me in the slightest if Aberdeen go for him with the McKenna cash, despite the fact they have about 20 midfielders on the books

Signed in the January window and played about and four a half games. Doige went how long again? At the time of the transfer both Jack Ross and Leanne said we'd have preferred a loan deal but County wanted a permanent move. Maybe we got lucky but with a fee but there's a footballer in there, even if he can only score versus Celtic.

Your only fact is that he hadn't scored since Feb 2019. My fact was that he hadn't started a game since Feb 2019. The rest of your post(s) is opinion only, such as "Edinburgh City beckons for him" or "His goal record is atrocious there's no doubt." Thank goodness you weren't denigrating him!!
As for Oli. I don't know if he'll make it or not but I won't write him off 2 weeks after he turned 22. That's just my opinion.
Oli however scored against Celtic having just turned 19. Kevin Nisbet was released by Partick at 21 & was playing in 3rd tier of Scottish football at 22. Those are facts.

I think too much is made of stats like goals per minutes. I remember debates at the time about Jamie Maclaren after his first season where his goals to minutes was amongst the best in the league. Yet extrapolated over a whole season we were looking at over 30 goals, yet no one expected him to achieve that the following season. So not sure I got the relevance of his goals to minutes. Same with Shaw, he may well have a good goals to minutes ratio but we’re only talking about 12 goals for Hibs.
More a general “gripe” about the importance some place on goals to minutes, rather than arguing against what you said MW as he did have a good goals to minutes ratio for Hibs.
I liked Shaw, didn’t think he progressed as much as we all hoped but think he’ll go on to have a solid career.

Good post, but the last paragraph is all about Heckingbotton, knocked our whole development plan a year back, and killed all the young boys confidence
You have to remember Jack wanted to keep him, but Oli wanted out, so shows he wanted to get on with his career

It's a far superior way than using a 10 minute sub appearance as a match without a goal.

Not sure I agree with that. Goals per minute is a more accurate reflection than appearances. Shaw got 12 goals in 65 appearances, but many of these appearances were as a sub. Surely goals per minute is a fairer reflection of that?

I’ve not argued that appearances is the best way to judge, simply that unless it’s over a big sample size goals to minutes in itself doesn’t really tell all that much. Particularly in relation to Maclaren and his half a season and Shaw’s 12 goals, as the examples being discussed. I never considered Shaw’s goals to minutes when I thought about joining Ross County.

Not sure I’m following your point. I said that many of Shaws appearances were as a sub. In that respect goals to appearances it didn’t accurately reflect his goalscoring abilities. I never mentioned McLaren, my post was just about Shaw and I suppose backing up my view that he was reasonably successful at putting the ball in the net, especially taking into account his time on the field. In terms of joining Ross County, his goals per minute weren’t really part of my thinking either.

Absolutely nothing wrong with getting our more experienced players currently not involved doing some scouting of our opponents, it shows he trusts these guys opinion and it also keeps senior players not involved in games feeling like they're still a main part of the team.

Ross County signing Michael O’Connor. Played for Hibs in a reserve game v Dunfermline last season
O'Connor is a very good player but a total nut job. Very hard to manage. Dingwall might be quiet enough to keep him out of trouble.

I don’t think Gogic and Newell were lacking in either of those things today.
Newell's had a good couple of games against Rangers and Celtic, as has Gogic. I still think they need that extra player in there with them. Wright did fine last week but I don't think he's the answer in the middle, especially against stronger teams like Rangers, Celtic or Aberdeen.
Newell is a good player, he's now had a couple of good games against Rangers and Celtic. Next challenge for him is to string 10-12 performances in a row together without any of the anonymous ones he comes away with from time to time.
Any criticism of the midfield today really shouldn't in any way be a criticism of Newell or Gogic though.

Interesting that we've been using the players more to do some scouting etc. I know Stephen McGinn was meant to be doing some extra non playing work for us while he trained with us. Could probably see some clubs continue to do that to milk work out of players for their wages.

I really don’t see it as milking players tbh. Jack done it with Whittaker last year too and he was delighted to be given the responsibility. It’s a way of showing trust to his players and I think it’s a great move. Could you imagine Gerrard doing this same with McGregor or Morelos? Hearts with any of their part time players? No chance.

I know he wasn’t properly in the first team picture but the last couple of transfers have seen an incoming and outgoings pretty much coincide with each other; Murphy/Horgan and Barnes/Dabrowski.

Nice to have a rumour at least
Like the look of KM, seems a good all round player with plenty of scope for further development in the same way SJM was when he first signed. I seem to remember his name coming up several times in previous transfer windows even before JR was the boss.
The fact that he broke into the St Mirren team while JR was the manager and he would surely have a better chance of first team football with us than Aberdeen and their 37 midfielders could hopefully swing it in our favour. We also seem to have a reasonable relationship with St Mirren when it comes to transfers as well.

I'm glad that this is the kind of deal Hibs are pursuing, bad news to see a statement from Saints though. Means he almost definitely won't be coming here.

Fair play to St Mirren if having him for the rest of the season could be the difference between staying up and being relegated.
Hope we have a pre-contract ready for him in January though

Indeed however would we still be required to pay a development fee even if he was pre contract?? Given he is only 22?

Usually comes back to bite teams on the bum though as it did with Nisbet and the pars

Yup. He's got a year left on his current deal, so if they are going to cash in they best do it now.

Think only ourselves and Aberdeen (outwith the ugly sisters) could afford him.
I would like to think the Jack Ross factor would appeal to the player?? Having played under him previously!
Then again money (wages) do talk sometimes!

Not sure how much they will be looking for?
£150-200k with sell on?

i'm hoping they've not knocking back a few bids because they are not getting offered a huge sell-on % like they got with sjm, if the player wants to come it's up to him to put a little pressure on his club, no club wants to keep an unhappy player...no more bids i say and i hope they're desperate for cash in january :)

I suspect St Mirren think he’ll want to move to us, by announcing it publicly they are putting pressure on Hibs to increase their bid, it also makes them look a bit better to their fans if it looks like they rejected bids but eventually gave in to player power.
I think we will sign him.

Think this is Ron trying to be clever. Strengthen at a difficult time should in theory bring you out the other end ahead rather than behind. The squad is tiny and 1-2 quality signings should make top 4 finish much more likely.
I wouldn’t get caught over paying for Magennis though. There are other options and no point being held to ransom.

I wouldn’t want us to break the bank on Magennis either. Coming off the back of a serious injury and has had other injury issues in the past from what I’ve read.

It’s been discussed on here regularly that to get him to sign the new deal we had to insert a buyout clause of £1.5m. He’s started the season very well and would be a bargain for anyone.

Really can’t see how Aberdeen could justify spending money on another midfielder. A position they’re well stocked up in. Any midfielder joining them would surely question if they’re guaranteed a place in the first teamI genuinely think that Aberdeen are doing this to weaken us. Would be a squad player for them. They just want 3rd.
