View Full Version : Greggs Summer 2020-21 transfer thread

It would be good if there could be a separate English thread. Hate reading about their league. It's siphoning off support in the younger ages groups from teams like Hibs. Liverpool playing a friendly at murrayfield was shameful.
Would be much better if this thread covered Scottish transfers, i.e. ones which affect Hibs

It’s much the same to many on the site. I’m personally as interested in the latest Eliteserien signings as I am in discussing Liverpool and Spurs.
But hey as long as the handful of you obsessed with English football are happy.
You watch and are interested in something other than Scottish football, must be obsessed. Okay then.
If you aren't interested, fine. I'm not really interested in seeing folk moaning and trying to moderate the forum. Easily the worst posts on here. The admins and moderators do an excellent job, they don't need your help. If a post is off topic, if will be dealt with.

Did he? What did he say?
Genuine question btw, I don’t have any favourite English club.
He’s a whiney hypocrite. Wenger-esque.
After Chelsea got Werner Klopp said -
‘For some clubs it seems less important how uncertain the future is.’
'Owned by countries, owned by oligarchs, that's the truth. We are a different kind of club.
'We got to the Champions League final two years ago, we won it last year, and became Premier League champions last season by being the club we are, by being led the way we are led.
'We cannot just change it overnight and say, "So now we want to behave like Chelsea, now they've signed a lot of players".'

Wait, he's absolutely spot on. What has he said wrong?
Half the football world complains about teams buying success but when klopp or Wenger does it, it's wrong?
Liverpool have build an excellent team, largely from player sales.

Correct.
Liverpools net spend over 5 years is incredible.
Very well run club at present, and considering what
They inherited its a superb achievement from all at the club.

Liverpools net spend is miles lower than teams like United, City and Chelsea. Klopps comments are pretty accurate to be honest given they are the league champions and won champs league in previous season imo adds weight to his comments.

Its pretty shameful that Hibs transfer chat has had to move from the main transfer thread on the biggest hibs fans message board because some folk wont stop talking about English fitba.
There are literally thousands of places to listen, read and talk about English fitba. There are very few to do the same about Hibs.
Is it too much to ask that the main board is kept to discussing Hibs and Hibs related subjects?
That this question even needs to be asked is a bit of an embarrassment to be honest.

Correct, the thread title is Summer 2020/21 Transfers, nothing specific in there about just a specific team or thread. I suggest those, complaining about people discussing summer transfers, go for a drive to Barnard Castle for an eye exam before moaning about posts that are relevant to the topic.

I only check this thread for the puns.
But a Hibs-only transfer rumours thread won't have much activity unless people go off topic and start discussing which of our current players could be upgraded, or whether a player who has just moved clubs could do a job for us. If and when there is a new rumour about us, then I'll find out here.

It’s not exclusively talking about Hibs though. There is a great mix of topics on here, non Hibs related that are a good read/discussion. Those thread titles, like this one, make it clear what could be discussed and it’s up to you to join in or just observe.

Rapid Wien have signed Bernhard Unger from Mattersburg II.
I have to admit to being a bit underwhelmed by that, and it's not like we're undermining a rival club, as Mattersburg are rank rotten.

Do people think that if conversation about other transfers was to cease that Hibs would suddenly go out and make a raft of signings?
There’s no chat on Hibs transfer/signings because there are currently no solid rumours and no signings. If any rumours surface or we make a signing there will be page upon page of discussion about it. However, in the meantime people are discussing what other activity is occurring elsewhere within the transfer market.

If there was genuine Hibs transfer news this thread like it always has been would be the hot topic regardless of other topics ongoing. If you click on the thread and see discussions of transfers and so forth at other clubs whether that be in England or India, then the reality is that you really aren’t missing anything Hibs related.

I have posted a couple of Everton signings on this thread as it is a transfer thread. But there was page after page after page about how **** Eric Dier is and also about the merits or otherwise of Daniel Levy's ownership of spurs. I'm ok with signing chat but it seriously strayed off topic for pages. And when folk who really want to see transfer rumours and chat come in the thread I can see why they would be pissed off trawling through those pages

Spurs still short of a striker and centre back imo.
Thiago will be a great asset, Jota will offer great back up to Mane and Salah too.
Good suggestion on Allan, with Mallan back fit I think he will play more in that Allan role until he is back. But depending on the severity of Allan’s health issue it could be a possibility.

Thanks - you make the point much better than me.
Its the endless encroachment of English football that annoys, and yes i could live with it if it was x is signing for y etc.
But to have read through some parody debate where 'fans' of elite, hyper capitalist, greedy super clubs try and debate with each other who is, and is not, the most salt of the earth, and why the billionaires that own that club are s so much less moral and virtuous than the billionaires who own this club, is very frustrating.
I see Hibernian (and clubs of our ilk) as the antidote to that amoral and immoral world of elite football, and it annoys me that even our spaces are increasingly encroached upon by the onward march of voracious, extreme capitalist global elite football.
Apologies if i over reacted, i just see it as the thin edge of the wedge.

People can both like watching other football, and want a transfer thread to contain.... transfer news. What many are doing is seeing the thread is at the top of the page, so click on it only to see the same 5 or so of you discussing English football. I don’t think it’s the actual EPL transfer news any one has issues with, it’s the pages of english football chat that goes with it.

The most tedious thing on this thread is it being clogged up every so often with pages of arguments about what sorts of transfers can or can’t be discussed or what level of discussion a rumour is allowed to generate.
It’s a transfer rumour thread and rumours are by nature gossip which leads to discussion e.g has a manager got it right or wrong, is a transfer fee too much etc. Sometimes it does go on for a bit and it can get annoying but I’d rather put up with it and have a forum with free flowing chat.
Hopefully the newly added vanilla transfer thread helps with this.

I don't support anyone else other than Hibs. I'll watch all manner of football but have no affinity for any English team over another.
I just think we shouldn't be too critical about other clubs when we have a rich American guy with zero connection to us running the club. And that's not me having a go at RG - I like him.

Surely he would rather play for us than sit in the stands watching all season.

Seems a little unprovoked. I feel the same as the poster you are responding to.
So in summary, genuine transfer talk on this thread then? Massive debate as to where the player will or won't fit in restricted to potential Hibs signings?
With you on that.
Some signing for Spurs. Son, Kane and Bale is some attack.

This is getting pretty ridiculous now. Posting random rumours that you don't actually care about just to try and annoy other posters is not the purpose of this thread, nor is the purpose to constantly berate those who are talking about transfers in other leagues.
Can we just stop with the petulance? It's tiresome. Hibs rumours will be all over this thread when there's actually any to speak about, but equally that doesn't mean this should be used for a multi-page debate about managers in other countries. Let's try to keep it on topic as far as possible.
We generally give these threads room to breathe, as what classifies as relevant is a pretty wide and subjective net, but we're now looking at 3 separate transfer threads for no real reason.

I don't support anyone else other than Hibs. I'll watch all manner of football but have no affinity for any English team over another.
I just think we shouldn't be too critical about other clubs when we have a rich American guy with zero connection to us running the club. And that's not me having a go at RG - I like him.
Our rich American/Peruvian in the grand scheme of things isn’t that rich.

I'd love Jason Naismith back by the way, though I accept it doesn't make a lot of sense from a budget perspective- with McGinn in excellent form and right back not a priority.
Still think he might end up back at Hibs in the next couple of years and make RB his own for a good long spell. He's about 4 years younger than McGinn IIRC.
I was hoping we'd have a McCrorie alternative wrapped up by now, but if the 'right' deal is going to take some time, then I understand the wait. I do wonder who we're eyeing up, though.
I'd imagine a CB is still on the cards.

Our performances this season and especially today shows we’re not far off.
A couple of good additions would really push us on imo.
Centre mid and a striker for me and we look good, ideally cover at centre half too but I think that’s maybe pushing it.
If McNulty was available and relatively cheap I’d take him as he’s the sort of quality to push for a starting place and could come on and grab a goal.
Last season he looked very uNfit and lacking sharpness so I’m willing to put that aside and think we’d get more out of him

If we were prepared to pay the reported £350k for McCorie whats the real difference between that and offering the same to Motherwell for AC?
I’d argue AC is the better player and prospect. £350k with a 20% sell on and maybe even a fringe player (Hallberg?) going on loan for the season....

League One clubs can't easily outbid us now that they have a wage cap and players hoping to move up in wages will all be looking at the same limited number of vacancies in the Championship so there won't be as many options as there might have been before the cap was put in place.

Aberdeen and Nottingham Forest agreed a fee of £3m, plus £2m in add-ons, for defender Scott McKenna.
@SkySportsNews understands that among the bonuses are “realistic targets” for appearances and international caps.
The deal also includes a 20% sell-on clause.

The Covid effect diminished the fee. However, they have had another 2 years out of the guy and with the add ons and sell on percentage they probably won't be far off £6m in the end.

I wouldn’t be banking on them getting anywhere close to that in the end. I’m sceptical as to whether McKenna is good enough to play in the English second tier, never mind get a big move etc.

McGinn had left St Mirren...there was no way we could have done that deal if he was still under contract. Neither would we have got him in that deal if he had multi options..We were his only UK option at the time after he cooled on a US move..Those factors also led St Mirren much more open to the deal shape. Motherwell wouldn't be motivated at all just now on it

He will be good enough for the second tier but there is a good chance he will get stuck there unless he gets promoted with a Championship team. He is strong and fast but limited on the ball which means he can never get to the very top.
I wonder if they have a replacement lined up already or will the likes of Kilmarnock and Motherwell be getting a call enquiring about Findlay and Gallagher. I reckon it will be Findlay given Kilmarnock must be in a vulnerable position given the covid outlook for the rest of the season.

It's funny how we can all have such very differing views on McKenna, Earlier in the thread a few were saying he is slow, I highlighted what McInnes said about his great pace and how that allowed a flexibility in the tactics employed by the sheep.
Both posters quoted above make reasonable, but quite conflicting points about his footballing skills or lack of.
I've really only seen him v Hibs and on the telly for Scotland. He's never impressed (full stop) me as someone who is especially blessed with any exceptional ability on the ball. At the sheep that might also reflect McInnes' approach. Move the ball quick and out to the wide players who can do damage. He's definitely a big laddie and has athleticism to match, but is that enough in a league where size is taken for granted and most teams will have a very large and robust striker up front.
I suppose McKenna is clearly a footballer that divides opinion. I also think the big money talk and the Villa offer of 7 million (which I very much doubt|) added to that kind of thinking. I'm not sure any of it did McKenna any favours

His nephew (I think) used to play at my boys football club, there’s a signed Barcelona strip at the club that was given as a thank you when he left the club. Not sure if his brother or sister maybe studied in Edinburgh?
Suppose what I’m saying in a sort of round about way, it seems inevitable that he will join Hibs one day, I’ve still to join the dots as to how exactly that’ll happen but it clearly is.

The year is 2028 and a 34 year old Nelson Semedo is starting for Hibs in the Quarter Final of the Champions League. Some say that his teammate Ryan Porteous is still living rent free in the head of Steven Gerrard.

I suspect Hibs have budgeted for no fans. As others have pointed out. A limited number of fans might lose us money due to us having so many ST holders who won't be paying to go to the games. What we need to work out is our PPV offering. We have been shafted to date by our home games being on Sky, now that's over, we can make some money.

Jackson Irvine would be a great signing imo. Strong and mobile midfielder who is capable of scoring goals. Would walk into any midfield outside of the OF for sure. If we signed him, that would be a massive sign of intent. I've always remained sceptical we could sign him, but the longer the window goes on for, the more likely it could become.

No confidence in the source but would be pretty much perfect tbh. In the mould generally of McGinn/Docherty but not the same low centre of gravity. Very impressive at County and by all accounts did well in England. Would give us really balanced options in midfield:
Deep - Gogic and McGinn
Box-to-box (for want of a better term) - Irvine and Newall
Attacking - Allan and Mallan
This assumes Hallberg leaves as I think someone would have to. Couple of youngsters to back them up. Gives us one physical and one technical player in the deep and B2B positions, and 2 different types of 10.
This would suit JR's desire to be flexible, lots of combinations that could dominate pretty much anyone outside the OF depending on how we want to play. Having another physical midfielder could also reduce the need for another CB as Gray, McGregor and Gogic can all fill in in a back 3

For the new Conference League, Scottish teams will only need to go through one qualifying roundup reach the group stage.
Depending on who wins the Scottish Cup, third place might be a Europa League place though, in which case there is more than one round to get through to reach the groups.

Read some Barcelona fans opinions on this. They seem to think he struggled big time to link up with Messi (something Alves did spectacularly for years). I think he totally lost confidence. Nearly all the goals in that 8-2 humping came from his side, he was absolutely awful.
Wolves will suit him though I think. Plenty of his friends, less pressure.

With the current pandemic I think a lot more teams are open to taking a cut on certain players. Skriniar was benched for the last knockout games of the Europa League so probably one they could be looking to move on.
Replacement is supposedly Milenkovic of Fiorentina.

We're not quite at that level yet.
For that you need to be in the top 12 leagues in Europe, although through some strange UEFA technicality this slides down to the top 13 most seasons.
We finished last season 14th, however this season we are currently 13th in the rankings so if that stays the same then we will have the qualifiers you described for the next again season.

He’s a stand out for his age and clearly has great attributes that can be polished. A spell in Italian football rather than at a lower league club renowned for hoofball will do him the world of good. I saw through the hype of Dunfermline benchwarmer Harry Cochrane. This boy at least has potential.

Liverpool among three clubs battling for highly-rated teen
Liverpool, Leeds and Brighton are battling to sign Motherwell’s highly-rated teenage defender Sam Campbell.
The trio have had bids accepted for the 16-year-old, according to PA news agency.
Campbell is yet to decide on the move with all three Premier League clubs trying to persuade him to join them.
Crystal Palace are also monitoring the situation but the Eagles are yet to agree any deal with Motherwell.
He may remain in Scotland with Well keen to keep him and the Fir Park club have offered him a three-year deal to stay.

There’s been quite a few young Scottish players been chased by English and European clubs.
Motherwell have had a great record recently of developing and selling on young players
Never seen the young lad play, but would he not be better playing at Motherwell and getting 1st team experience with them, then going to one of the teams mentioned, and getting lost in their vast academies
Glad he's away. Cracking wee player and weakens them significantly. 1.5 million is unbelievable money for a Championship youngster who's out of contract soon. They've done well there.
Totally agree

What are Motherwell doing that we're not, seem to have quite a few cracking players over the past number of years.

They generally play them in the 1st team a lot younger than we do

I think they and Hamilton probably benefit from their location near bigger football playing population areas and can benefit from playing young kids earlier which may persuade kids and parents to choose them rather than go to the two cheeks. Can also get kids who drop out of OF academies.

They have a number of coaches scouring the games at Ravenscraig Regional Sports centre. Over the weekend there must be at least 1500 youngers playing in 1 hour slots. Loads of small pitches which expand with the age groups and loads of boys & girls clubs take part. The local clubs seem to have first call as its easier for parents to take their youngers to these clubs for training if selected. They do invite quite a lot to assess them.
Don't know if Hibs scouts take in theses game.

Is he related to their midfielder Allan Campbell?

He’s way overhyped. And don’t forget the lower league club have to give a third of the fee to Celtic.
