While I think you make some good points, I always thought it was a fallacy that we improved when Fenlon came in. I’m sure we were 10th (albeit someone did have a game in hand) when he arrived and we finished 11th. Only securing safety in the second or third last game against Dunfermline.
I thought Fenlon did a poor job, but he was dealt a bad hand in coming into a club that was a shambles under Petrie. I don’t blame him for how poor a season it was, but don’t agree that we improved. I felt we were as poor as we had been.I liked Pat Fenlon and he definitely had something about him as a manager. As you say, Hibs were like a rudderless ship during his time though (not his fault) and there was no clear identity for the way forward. That only changed once we were actually relegated and Stubbs came in.
You wonder if Fenlon was appointed as he wasnt a big personality and would make demands of the board. With proper support he might have been a success but came across as a decent and honourable man regardless.

Worse than who ? Fenlon ! Butcher was worse than your first two names . Stubbs is nearer to the top list of our good managers than our crap ones .
Butcher goes without saying although I should have mentioned him.
I was responding to a post which was talking up Fenlon. And I wasn’t being critical of Stubbs.

I thought we drastically improved when we signed Gary Deegan for the start of his first full season. Gave us the dig in midfield we needed. He was never the same after the twat broke his jaw. For me that was a pivotal moment for Pat.

Not sure about the younger players but I looked at their players over the age of 24 who have either been released or haven't signed and I'd say unlikely

I was bored at work the other day and had the same thought.
Had a look at a few of the names and Rubben Sammut seemed like someone who fits the mould of our type of signing (Scotland under 21 international that’s maybe on the verge of losing his way a bit).
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sunderlandecho.com/sport/football/sunderland-afc/latest-sunderland-afc-news/jack-ross-reacts-hugely-promising-sunderland-debut-ruben-sammut-485377%3famp
Jack Ross seemed to rate him based on that story, although I realise he probably had to say what he did.
Will likely be cheap as well so maybe one to keep an eye on.

I agree with you about Fenlon over the entirety of his tenure. He didn't leave us much better off than he left us (if at all) and his last summer transfer window was up with the worst of them (losing Doyle, Griffiths and Wotherspoon who could all score and adding Vine and James Collins to join Heffernan, Handling and Caldwell up front, having Harris and Cairney as our only wide options - howling). I know folk argue about the league position he left us in but in my opinion the biggest contribution towards our relegation came that summer.
But I do think he did well up until the end of his first season and I thought he did fine during his second season.
Hibs' transfer business around that period pre-Stubbs was absolutely stinking.

I could see us being interested in one or two of the released Man United youngsters
Borthwick Jackson, Left back - Played a good couple of games for Man Utd and was highly thought of.
Demetrei Mitchell, Left back/wing - I was really impressed with him at Hearts, quick, good on the ball and good defensively and offensively. Would definitely offer him a deal.
Ethan Hamilton, centre mid - Big Scottish centre mid who seems to have impressed the teams he has been at on loan
Kieran O’Hara, keeper - Impressed on loan at Macclesfield and Burton, also got 2 caps for ROI
These are the sort of guys I can see us signing again under Jack Ross, young players with a point to prove and plenty potential.
The only thing with a left back is we already have Stevenson and Mackie as cover for there, it’s a position I think we really need to improve but they might prioritise others first.
I seen Dempster in the press saying we have some brilliant 20/21 year old players that if they were at other clubs would be starting. Wonder who she is meaning? Porteous, Gullan, Murray, Mackie and Stirling? To say they’re brilliant and would start at other clubs is maybe pushing it

You remember incorrectly. She claimed something along those lines, probably based on a statistic or 2 about his very good goals to minutes ratio at the time. Pretty pathetic that like 18 months later folk and still beating her with that stick. She turns our club massively around, wins the cup and promotion and is constantly beaten with one out of context quote. I dunno if we deserve nice things at times.

And Easter Road chief executive Dempster reckons it's that form that ranks him among the best players on the continent in his age group. Speaking to Hibs TV, she said: "Oli Shaw, two goals in two games, fantastic. "Absolutely one of the best young players, certainly for his age group, in Europe. "We are excited about having him at the club.

I liked Pat F as a man but I was in no way convinced by him as a manager. The David Stephens saga was incredible. IIRC Pat decided on a back 3 for start of 2012/13 season featuring McPake, Stephens & Hanlon. I think Stephens played in every pre season game then we went to Tannadice & lost 3-0 in the opening game, could have been 7! Stephens never played again & was released before end of the transfer window. He went from the fulcrum of our defence to a free transfer in 3 weeks. As for Kujabi!!

The thing is that each and every one of us has said something about a players ability at one time or another that hasn't turned out to be right. I thought Paul Lovering would end up playing for Scotland and he ended up playing for Airdrie. Leeann said what she did in the press whereas I told my mates what I thought. Don't see any reason to continue to use it against her

In her position everything she says is analysed to death, so she has to be careful. In your case it's just your mates that will on occasion remind you of your observation. For what it’s worth I shared your vision for Lovering 🙄

She employs a full-time management team to judge the merits of the playing staff.

Absolutely no chance of this happening imo - there will be half a dozen teams in England interested that will blow Celtic out of the water financially.
Celtic don't have anything to offer this level of player anymore - the possibility of Champions League football or 10 in a row doesn't count for anything against £100k a week in the Premier League.
Either his agent is trying to keep him in the news or Celtic are trying to sell season tickets.

Absolutely agree with this.
I’d imagine his wage demands might be too much for us. In normal circumstances it’s a player I could see Aberdeen bringing in

Agreed - he fits the mould in a number of ways.
Probably out of our price range just now, but that'll depend on what kind of offers he gets. If another Championship club don't go in for him, we might have a shot.
I say that like I know what our budget is, which I don't of course. :greengrin

Read that he had just had a baby so might want to come back up the road.
The good thing is we can used previous examples of players we have manage to turn around.

If you read between the lines in the stuff coming from Hibs, players have to do their own kit initially as they seek to limit contact at the training centre as part of their Covid measures.
It's highly likely that the kit man would remain either on furlough or an alternative arrangement until that changes.

Champions League a big factor, plus would practically nail down an International spot for the length of his Celtic deal.
He also might fancy being remembered in his home country as part of a 10 in a row winning side.
Playing in the qualifying rounds with slender hopes of group stage appearances every now and then and an ‘achievement’ few outside of the Celtic support will care about versus playing in one of the top leagues against some of the best players week in, week out.
Celtic would be a total step back from any Premier League club. The only ones have done it have been those who were either, youngsters, those who never quite made it at that level, or those on the decline. Would be a waste of his career, the easy option, if anything!

Each to their own but I’d personally rather look back on a career where I’d won trophies rather than just earned a lot of money.
Steven Fletcher has probably earned more money than Scott Brown but I know which career I would rather have had.
20 years from now, Bournemouth will be back in league 2 and telling your kids you once played for them won’t impress that much.

I’d rather look back on my career knowing I’d tried my best to get to the top. Fletcher took the step to play against the best week in week out. Scott Brown decided to stay here and compete in one horse race for most of his career.

Each to their own but I couldn’t disagree more.
Brown has played at the best stadiums in Europe for club and country, earned a tremendous living, won loads of trophies and has managed to stay at home whilst doing so, which meant he got to be around when his kids were born and still young.
If he’d gone down south there’s every chance none of that could have happened, probably apart from earning loads of money.
I could get a job in Dubai if I wanted and I’d earn loads more than I do now, wouldn’t even dream of it though.

I’m not disputing he’s had some good experiences but surely part of being a professional sportsman is being the best you can be? I’m not talking about what money he can earn. I'm a big fan of both Scotty & Fletch. The sad truth however is that outside Scotland no one give a s**t about Scottish Football. A lot of that is down to ignorance but unfortunately Scott's achievements & medals have to be viewed in that light. We'll never know just how good Scotty could have been in England.

Depends on the player I suppose. A move back to Celtic could see him collect some trophies, get top level European experience and secure himself as a Scotland starter before moving on again later.

There’s arguments for which career you’d think prefer, each come with their own pro’s and cons
Fletcher
- Teated himself at the highest level - Premier league
- Played against the best players/best known players in football every week
- Played in France for Marseille
- Earned an absolute fortune
Brown
- Playing week in week out for best team in Scotland
- Potentially be Celtics most successful captain with 10 IAR
- Champions league every season
- Earned a fortune
For me Brown is a one in 100 when it comes to Hibs players going to the old firm though and he himself is surely surprised at just how well he has done. Fletch on the other hand has been up against the most successful and famous players in the world for years, Brown gets a couple of games per season doing this in the Champions League depending on the draw.
Most would choose Browns career over Fletchers, but how many would choose Riordan, O'Connor, Thomson, Whittikar, Killen, Allan etc over Fletcher?
FWIW I actually think Fletch is underrated and should have been used a lot better by the national team, he would still do a very job up here for the old firm imo.

For those in any doubt, Hibs will definitely wait until all cuts are agreed before announcing any new signings, that doesn't mean however there isn't business that's not being done. Obviously he did. That wasn't what got Shiels sent off. Putting 2 hands in Gordons face/neck did.
Its like shooting someone then saying their overreation is what got you sent down. Not buying it. Deano was a dummy. Simple as that.
You've seen the replays so you're aware he didn't put his hands on Gordon's face. And that wee laughing emoji response you're so fond of is the equivalent of the annoying wee kid in the playground who would pretend to laugh at people in a desperately weak attempt to mock them. It doesn't work and i's not a good look.

I notice the save from Jones header at ER made Gordon’s highlights, has always stuck in my mind as one of the best saves I’ve ever seen live at a game.
As much as I’m tempted to say they are welcome to a 37 year old that hasn’t played in a year and a half come October, you can only

I actually don't refuse to listen to anyones viewpoint. I see many posts I agree with or open my eyes to something that I didn't know. I pretty much always read the points of the post I am reponding to and, well, respond to them. Listening to someones viewpoint is different from agreeing with them. I listen to every point that is put my way when I'm discussing something with someone and if I disgree, I try to back up why.
I don't think the way I put my points across is condesending but it seems other disagree. That is fair enough but again, its a subjective thing. It doesn't and never will merit some of the personal abuse I have taken on here.

If it's any help, I hardly ever post on here and have no axe to grind with anyone. Your rolling on the floor laughing emojis did seem to be mocking other people's opinions, and the statement that the subject had been covered recently seemed to be an attempt to close down someone's point, as if what you were saying was the proven truth, no other opinion's to be treated seriously. Also, your statement has Shiels had his hands in Gordon's face were not what I remembered so I had a look on YouTube and saw no such thing.

Whilst I remain hopeful, I'd be surprised if there is any movement this week, feels like the wage negotiations will take a while to sort and club are reluctant to make any announcements till agreed. You'd imagine the severity of cuts will impact JR's playing budget too, maybe we'll hear something on the cuts this week..

Nesbit has scored some goals for Dunfermline. He's 23 and not scored in any of the top leagues. Gullan is still only 20. All ive seen of Nesbit has been on Youtube. Ive seen enough of Gullan to know he will score plenty once he gets his chance. For me we really need to give Gullan a chance rather than potentially spending 350k on an unproven striker.

What I did see Nesbit impressed me a lot and he won't ever score goals at a higher level unless he gets the chance. I'm aware of how highly rated Gullan is at the training centre and the guys like yourself and Billy who watch a lot of the young team plus he was doing well with Raith in league one. I would still prefer to take a chance with Nesbit who at 23 is still young and he's improved massively in the last two seasons and there's nothing to say he can't step up again this season.

Yes good shout...i've seen Nesbit twice in the flesh and he looks like the sort of young hungry player that would fit the profile of one of our most successful recent signings, McGinn. He's got the attributes I like in a Hibs' player too, quick and direct.
I know Whitty was a free agent, but I was thinking today that can Hibs not look to offer Dunfermline one or two of our fringe players in part-swap/part cash deal for him?
With Kamberi's loan deal now extended, we're back to one recognised established forward in Doidge, and Gullan as the only other option.
The club have had an unexpected financial boost in the last weeks with the leap of faith by the fans with the uptake in HSL contributions.
It's not too much to ask the club to reciprocate in the form of a couple of decent signings?

Would far sooner we gave minutes to Gullan, this season is a massive opportunity for us to give a few really promising kids some game time, and for the 'academy' to prove it's worth. If we can afford Nisbet and get him for a fair price then great, but I wouldn't want us spending money in an area in which I think we've got enough to get by, when there are more pressing areas that need sorted.
BTW, his name is Nisbet.

My bad...I can't see him being here at the start of the season though, or if he is I don't think his heart will be in it.
My point still stands...other teams are signing players, and they're having to deal with effects of Covid too. With 9k plus season tickets sold and the windfall of the HSL contributions the club have got to be a bit more active in the transfer market than they appear to be at the moment.
i really hope we're not going to be going down the road of loan retreads that's been a feature of the last couple of windows.

No sure about having enough to get by up front. Really, we have one proven striker in Doidge and that’s it. Boyle will do you a job but that means you lose your best winger. And then there is the untried Gullan, who I hope gets minutes and proves himself but I wouldn’t want to go in to the season relying on it.
Normal circumstances I’d be looking for us to strengthen at the back but with the contracted players we have I think it’ll be a case of going with what we’ve got.
Middle of the park is the obvious gap.

To be fair, the description was 'most successful captain', rather than 'best ever' - they're not one and the same.
I would agree that Billy McNeil is still that captain (best), and he played in a far tougher era than Scott Brown has. Never the less, SB's record and trophies will be one of the most decorated ever (in Scottish football) I would assumeAnd his most impressive is his 2007 league cup winners medal.

If our Development Team is being wound up, even temporarily, that means we will be losing promising players. I would imagine this would mean losing a lot of potential for the future. Would it make sense to loan out as many "prospects" as we can to teams like Dumfy, maybe to help get Nesbitt? I know that we will probably end up still paying a chunk of wages, but if we genuinely think some of these guys will make it, it makes sense to keep hold of them, release the rest and keep their development going elsewhere. You are maybe not cutting costs so much, but you are still cutting a large chunk and helping secure new players and hopefully future players when they come back to us.

Pretty sure Szamotulski was a good keeper. The rest, yeah, pretty rubbish.

The best of the development team get lent out every year already. Most are not good enough for Dunfermline.

Sorry, I was responding to an earlier posters comment about difficulty in spelling names like Nisbet.
Szamotulski was really decent. MAC was ok too.

The polish goalie had the game of his life against us and got man of the match can’t recall if it was at Easter road or Tannadice. He was in a poor hibs team when he came.
Presumably we are waiting for players taking a wage cut before we see incomings - and probably the reason Drey Wright is on day 9 of a medical.
Not heard about the wage cuts for a while, would have thought it would have been resolved one way or another by now.
Agree, wonder if negotiations are proving more difficult than first envisaged?

There's an added layer of complexity with them having already agreed to deferrals, and how that will then impact their cuts over the next 6 months or so, I feel for those who are having to negotiate, can't be an easy task, particularly when you bring agents into the mix..

thought he was horrific to be honest. Total bombscare at times and let in so many soft goals. Can remember a game v Aberdeen at home he throw in two when we were totally on top, think it ended 3 each.

I mind we used to have a user called "spellchecker" who used to call people out every time they made a typo. We should bring them back solely to correct people who spell it "Nesbit" or "Nesbitt" etc.

Oops apologies. :greengrin he wasn't the worst but like all appeared to fall out with JC. Pretty sure his last game as manager (Falkirk at home) Antoine Curier was a sub who was subbed not best pleased.
