No doubt Boyle will take some pressure off Youan for something special.
Even the season before last if Boyle wasn't on his A game we struggled elsewhere on the pitch.
In my opinion we can be to predictable at times and teams know what our plan is.

Stevenson had a terrible afternoon but he’s one of the few I’d trust to bounce back from yesterday with a run of better games.
He deserves his appropriate share of criticism but not replaced imo.
He absolutely does need replaced.
It beggars belief that anybody can't see that.

In the first half he was pretty much ignored. We went across the back four then up the wing and gave it away. We didn't have the confidence to play through the middle.
Indeed.

It’s ridiculously early to be judging, and I’m definitely tilted, but l’ll be very surprised if ALF is the answer to any meaningful question for us this year.
To be fair, I doubt Marco van Basten in his prime would have been able to do much as long diagonals shelled over his head and out of play all night.

I think Stevenson benefits from low expectations and a career of good will in the bank. His bar for a good performance is no defensive mistakes and simple 5 yard passes IMO. A low bar others don’t have the benefit of. His limitations on the ball contribute to blunting us as a team IMO.
:agree:
We all love the guy because he seems such a nice bloke and has always given his all, but if we're honest he's a limited footballer and criminally one footed even for our level.

I'm sure this will upset people but i said it on this thread or another one last night. Hanlon and Stevenson have contributed to some of the worst results in our history and continue to do so. How we're starting both of them in 2023 is beyond belief. Hanlon was captain last night and we were a shambles. What is he contributing to that role? Not much based on that. I couldn't care less if they won the Scottish cup back in 2016 or have a foundation. They need replaced. Until we stop accepting mediocrity we'll never consistently improve.

John McGinn played in defeats to Falkirk in the playoffs, Raith Rovers in the playoffs, Ross County in a cup final, Dumbarton twice, Morton, QOTS, Raith Rovers and Alloa in the league all in one season. Numerous defeats to part time teams all in one season.
Hanlon and Stevenson have been here and playing for 15 and 17 years. It’s no surprise they’ve seen some awful results.

Spot on, they should have both been replaced five years ago and that’s being kind to them
Yep. And we didn’t appear to do any of that last night. We had no confidence the play through the midfield. That’s worrying against such a poor team.
I agree. I'm pretty neutral on subject of LJ but it seemed apparent to me last night our players were following instructions in 1st half to get ball forward as quickly as possible. Mind you I don't suppose those instructions included 'bloot the ball out of play on every occasion'!

We can spend all the money in the world on forwards , but until we get this midfield sorted out asap then we are pissing into the wind. There is quite simply not enough quality or balance , as has been the case for so so long now..

Agree.
People rattle off who we have in midfield but it’s not an issue of numbers, it’s an issue of quality and balance. We need a new starting midfielder, one who would be an almost guaranteed starter.

Any player with that longevity will have taken part in some games with awful results. They've also contributed to some great results. As for last night, undoubtedly Stevenson had worst game I've ever seen but Hanlon was IMO, one of our better players. What's he expected to do as captain? Stand behind Marshall all game to clear ball when he drops it?

To be fair Nisbet scored plenty end of last season with this midfield (minus Levitt)
A good striker with actual movement will undoubtedly help.

While that's true, Stubbs side had a good plan, moved the ball well, created chances etc even on their poorer days.

Stubbs had a once in 20 years player in his team in the shape of John McGinn. If we had anyone with his drive in the team, we would have won last night. He also had a team that were playing against much inferior opponents week in week out, getting to practice passing the ball through hard working, physical, but inferior players most weeks in a competitive environment. We still couldn’t get promoted under him.

The year before that Stubbs had Scott Allan, who at that time was a similarly positive presence to McGinn.
The point that Alan Stubbs had a good pool of midfielders to choose from is a fair one though.

it was, and they were capable of fantastic team performances, but also capable of pretty abject displays against crap teams. I guess that is my point.
we have improved the squad in most areas of the pitch since last season (Obita and Harbottle in defence, Levitt in midfield, Wollacott and Boruc in goal) and managed to keep a couple of key assets in Fish and Youan for at least another year. Boyle coming back will be like a major new signing. But we desperately need another goal scorer to lead the line. Nisbet coming back into the team last season made a huge difference and I don’t feel our current strike force of Doidge, Melkersen and Le Fondre have anything like enough goals in them. Good goal scorers are bloody hard to find though !
this team under Johnson’s management could and probably should have come fourth last year. If we bring in a decent number 9 we have a team that should be 4th or 3rd.

Was Stubbs not with us for 2 years, both in the Championship? He had Scott Allan for the first, who left after a year to go to Celtic. John McGinn signed about a week before Allan left, and they both featured in a difficult game at Dumbarton at the height of the "Scott Allan saga".
So unless I'm mistaken, Stubbs only had McGinn for the second of his 2 seasons with us?

I'm happy with how our first team is shaping up, no doubt about it. The defence should be fine when Fish returns and we should be stronger for Marshall being replaced.
But do you seriously think we have enough from middle to front, particularly if we lose a couple of players to injury? Do you honestly think Melkersen, Doidge or ALF can make a meaningful contribution for a top 6 side? If we have to rely on any of them then we're goosed.
If we experience an average number of injuries for what we've come to expect in recent years then due to the lack of depth in the squad we're in big trouble.
Johnson did well to get what he could out of our squad last season but you could see he didn't trust the fringe players, players who then couldn't get it done at Tynecastle. If he couldn't trust them last season there's no reason why he should be trusting them this season, he was right not to trust them.

Not improving from last season? We haven’t even started the league campaign yet, nor have we finished in the transfer window yet. At least wait until the first round of league games have been played, then we’ll have a better idea, based on evidence, whether the team have improved or not from last season.

I often wonder how some of our recent signings would have coped if we were in the championship when they signed.
Not that I’m saying Cummings, Mcgeouch, Fyvie, Allan etc would have struggled.
But I think playing in the championship, winning most weeks and being the main men played a huge part as it gave them so much confidence to go out and compete. When we played the premiership teams they were full of confidence.
If they came in when we were in the top flight they may not have had the same impact as instant as they did.
Would Melkersen for example be a completely different player if he came to us in the championship, was the main man, scored a couple and grew in confidence? I remember Cummings when he started off never appeared anything special until we were relegated

Yesterday was the first competitive game of the season and it is only half time, new players have arrived and need time to bed in, fitness levels should improve along with match sharpness, it's far too early to be overly judgemental and let's be honest at the moment Europe provides us with a small chance of making money and unfortunately the opportunity for a decent side to inflict a lot of damage on us, I'm not a happy clapperand I do have my doubts about us improving after the loss of Nisbet and Porteous.

I actually maintain that Stubbs built a team / squad better suited to the premier league than the championship. He got better cup results over the piece against better opposition than he did trying to break down the weaker teams, and had a relatively good record in the games against the strong teams (Hearts and Rangers) in the league.
I don't think Stubbs really got a team that had the gung ho attacking approach that was required to break down teams who had little interest in attacking. His approach was more balanced and much more suited to playing teams who carried an attacking threat themselves.
Melkersen could only be a different player if had the required ability, which he does not.

Fish returning is our biggest positive right now, the defence was good for the second half of last season and his return will contribute to that.

Did we? Not with Fish. He was already here and couldn't get a game ahead of Porteous. He turned out good but we didn't replace Porteous with him. You could argue Fish replaced him in the starting lineup but we didn't replace Fish on the bench, therefore we were weaker in that position overall. We signed Egan-Riley who although could play centre back was quite shaky in that position, didn't play there often and was much better at RB or in midfield.
In my eyes, we have only just replaced Porteous with Harbottle. We haven't replaced CJER.

Melkersen shows nothing and has absolutely nothing about him. He is the least threatening striker we’ve had that gets a decent making of minutes since Danny Handling imo.

For me, it says Ethan thinks he's too good for Hibs and is now away to Brentford where he will be bereft of first team opportunities and playing for Tranent in 3 years.

He’s nowhere near fit for an EPL team. He’ll be going straight into a Community & Education Football Alliance League team playing against other youth players before he’s back up the road to play in the lower leagues.

its a boring Friday so I'll keep going. I suspect a few of the players did give a monkeys given they come from the general populace and most of the general populace prefer what they are used to and a proportion of the general populace don't care for flying and therefore prefer jet engines. The rumour, true or otherwise suggests a problem with the trip; its probably the schedule, going too late OR the plane or both. Just cause you are in the know on the technical capabilities of the plane doesn't mean the players were, probably the opposite actually. Agree its a strange hill....as per poster above

Players always dislike managers, it tends to be when they’re not playing or if the team is playing poorly.
Never the players fault and if they’re not selected players always think it’s something personal.
You never hear this stuff when the team wins every week. It’s a loser mentality and shifting the blame to someone else.
First it was Ross they had a problem with, then Maloney and now Johnson? Poor souls but I don’t buy it’s that bad and more likely just the usual moans you get at every team.
LJ gives chance to players he previously thought he wouldn’t play? I’m struggling to see the issue, I’m sure most players would want a chance to prove themselves and convince him. It’s also a year on so they could have developed.

It is weird hearing there is unrest in the dressing room. I heard the opposite but admittedly not direct from a first team player but pretty close. I was told the players that have come in love the atmosphere in the squad, there aren't any split groups they all work together. Now I bet the players were upset yesterday, probably due to their abject performance, some may have moaned about the travel involved in the trip but is that not par for the course? Travelling is the worst part of away days, I would be shocked if that has caused the camaraderie to vanish over night and there be a revolt against the manager, whom I was told is very easy to approach about anything and is really good with the whole squad. But what do I know, it's not like these rumours raise their head every bad patch or result we go through. The laughing and joking at training sessions is actually a secret ploy to make LJ think everyone is happy when the squad are planning a trip to the CEOs office to ask for him to be emptied because the all hate him!

I actually think I recall someone telling me about how poor the levels are in Holland once you get below the top league. Doesn’t necessarily mean you’re wrong though and FWIW I’m fairly excited by this potential signing. Hopefully something is announced soon as we could all do with the lift!

Is there now. Are they now? Interesting 🤔
I'm wondering why the LJ has lost the dressing room over unrest about travel which I would assume has nothing to do with him. Fair enough he can take his share for the performance, but the travel arrangements. Nah, not for me. Frankly, I would expect the club captain, on behalf of the "furious" players to be raising the issue with the proper person, probably Ben Kensell, but the rumours and speculation being posted would suggest he hasn't done that either. Doesn't stick up for his mates on the park, so that wouldn't surprise me.

And ?
As many players this will have been their first euro experience they moan their tits off aye ?
Rather than suck in the experience of playing for such a great club in europe they go away greeting
I heard the players did not like the fact that LJ turned up saying he was flying the plane, complete with white teeth and aviator sunglasses, they only calmed down a bit when they realised it was the bus he was driving.
I dont think any discord over travel. I do suspect a few undercover other team supporters stirring the sheite.

Not necessarily. They are a mid table Seria b team, the selling point for us is we are clearly a stepping stone to the riches of the English Leagues, or the Old Firm (which we may not like, but financially it's life changing).
Come to us, do well and score goals and he's almost guaranteed to get a move to a club who will probably treble his wages.

Not sure who they have as strikers though, he's guaranteed to be the main man here.

How much are these loans a few posters keep going on about. We are going to be bringing in a few million from doig moving on due to the money already owed plus sell on fee. Even if the transfer doesn’t happen we will still get the money owed.
Should we just not make any transfers until the last day of the window if this is when the money enters the bank?

Wasn't given a chance last season, when IMO he should have been given game time, and now at a Premier League club presumably on far better wages. Who knows if he'd have been given a chance this season, probably even less likely now Boyle is back.

It may turn out to be a great move for him.
He'll get excellent coaching, and will likely get loaned out to a lower-league club to get some game time. If he's not good enough for Brentford, he'll be in the shop window for others.
Similar thing happened to my partner's son's pal, Kieron Bowie. Went from Raith to Fulham, played in their U21 team, and is now on loan at Northampton, playing most weeks and helping them to promotion last season. Great experience for him.

I was going to say that if he wasn't happy about not getting into the Hibs first team he was hardly going to get into the Brentford side though you make a good point in that he might be loaned out to a lower league side and put himself in the shop window. Now that he's gone we move on , still got some very good young players at Hibs though good luck to the lad in the future.

its a boring Friday so I'll keep going.
I'd suggest that they are just using it as an excuse, having just embarrassed the club, and themselves with a frankly dire performance, getting their excuses in early.

I’d happily see Maguire leave but £20m is a bit of a joke
