Very short term thinking by Denver.

Surely the best thing would be Tebow to learn from Manning?

Surely the best thing would be Tebow to learn from Manning?

That would have been my instinct. Tebow has some of the hallmarks of a great QB, but needs to learn some of the mechanics and improve on those areas.

It would have been an ideal setup for the Broncos in the long-run if they could have Manning to teach TT, in preparation of him stepping up with Peyton ultimately retires in the next 2 years or so.

Maybe they know, having had a decent season just gone, that Tebow wouldn't be content playing second fiddle? I wonder what the Denver faithful think of this.

Elway supposedly never warmed to Tebow, not a good fit for the west coast offense. Personally i think Tebow will break league records somewhere in a long career (no, not for interceptions) :greengrin

I cant help but feel Denver screwed him a bit as they wanted the whole Tebow Mania gone from their door step, He got them into the play offs from an unlikely position!

However manning didnt do a great job teaching his understudies at Indy.

Elway never liked tebow and while Tebow mania was probably good for the Broncos I get the feeling tebows... Other aspects may have annoyed the organisation.

Imo Tebow is crap. He has some great attributes but for a former gator, college legend, his basics are shocking. I don't think he can learn these at his age well enough to be a top qb.

just dont see where Tebow could go, jaguars just signed Henne to compete wih gabbert, Miami need a Qb but he doesnt tick their boxes, Browns run a different offense, wherever he goes it will be as a back-up methinks.

I certainly didn't view it as a quality addition to support an already far-from-brilliant Sanchez. Surely acquiring a promising QB in the draft would have been more prudent?

I'm also amazed Tebow is going to be content to not play every week, having voiced his frustrations at not starting at the start of last season - or is he really confident that he'll dispose Sanchez?

Sylar

The Patriots quite regularly make trades and moves which confuse the hell out of me and this off-season is no different.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis has been released and has agreed a three year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals (who are also in talks with raiders RB Mike Bush).

I just don't get our trades at time - he was excellent for us last season and I don't understand us trading him out. No idea what we're getting in return yet.

I can't understand it - but then, I felt the same way when we traded Maroney and Green-Ellis really stepped up.

We've already signed some highly promising rookies in previous drafts who are more than capable of stepping up, particularly Stevan Ridley. We might also go after some of the free agent RB's available: Mike Bush, Cedric Benson and Justin Forsett are all available right now and would add some prowess.

I'm not overly fussed, as our clearly area to improve is on the other side of the field. We have players who can fill the hole of BJGE, but the holes in the defense are a clear priority.

I'm just glad he never went to the Jets, who were also apparently interested in him.

Guess the big worry is that if Sanchez has a poor couple of games on the bounce then there will be a clamour for Tebow and he should be nowhere near a starting job.

First bad HALF from Sanchez and you'll hear the Tebow cry. Like I said, he is right up Sparano's street and if you believe the game plan for the season it could actually work to our advantage. The problem with that though is we have other areas of the team that really need strengthened and IF we are going back to basics and the ground and pound game, Greene isn't the answer as our main RB.

I only had a brief glance at the fixture lists earlier and didn't quite realise this was a Thanksgiving day game! Result

The tradition isn't particularly interesting behind Detroit and Dallas - pretty sure both initially started it up as a gimmick to try and draw in more fans, over the holidays.

The Thanksgiving football "tradition" is actually owed to the College Football calendar, and in particular, Yale, Princeton and Michigan, who always played on the holiday date.

No real surprise - the real "allstars" of the NFL tend to miss the game, as they play in the Superbowl the following week and don't want to risk injury. It also (unlike the MLB Allstar game) doesn't mean anything and it's hard to play at 100% when you're not playing for anything. Now if they were to introduce an NCAA Probowl setup, to assist with draftings, I'd be happy to see it.

Quite unimpressed with our draft picks in all honesty. Who the **** is Tavon Wilson?! Can't understand that one, but I'm happy enough with both Hightower and Bequette, who was outstanding with Arkansas last year :agree:

Wee bit puzzled by Nate Ebner and Tavon Wilson, but happy enough with our picks, particularly Hightower, Chandler and Jeremy Ebert, who is a flying machine. I seen him in the Michigan vs Northwestern game last year and he was blisteringly quick, particularly on KO and punt returns.

A little bit apprehensive about Alfonso Dennard, as he's allegedly experienced some "issues with the law". Time will tell I guess.

A friend of mine from California has been going to Easter Road this.season. He likes going to games (he likes following perennial losers, hes a Clippers fan), but even he cant quite understand the miserable self-loathing thats on display at Hibs games. :agree: Its one of the great incongruities in world.sport that the Americans as a society pride themselves on winning at all costs and a dog eat dog, only the strong survive mentality, but as a sporting nation they do everything they can through the draft system and salary control to create equality and a level playing field. The NFL, NBA and MLB bigwigs might not appreciate the description, but its almost a socialist utopia :greengrin

But then, if there were relegation from the NFL then the Jets would be going down, no tickets for finals coz they never get there!

Yes the superbowl is in new orleans. Roger goodell really is about as popular in New Orleans at the moment as Craig whyte would be at ibrox, i think he might need to up his security when he visits for the superbowl if the saints have a bad season as it will pretty much be down to his over the top punishment of the team.

I still think we make the playoffs though. Our offence is just too good with Drew Brees and Jimmy Graham to miss out.

Sorry about your team btw. As much as I love Tebows spirit, I can't see him being the QB that the jets need. The new York media will slaughter him.

Just what I need, more pity on here :take that. He's (Tebow) NO gonna be our starting QB. We've signed him to play special teams, he's gonna make a great punt protector , kick holder as well as run our wild card. Sanchez is the worry. What do you think of the Coples pick in the draft? Everyone was tipping him as falling stock because he was a bit quieter last season, seems a really good athlete though and it's all positives coming out of the rookie camp! (This is coming from a Giants fan)

Delighted we've signed Addai - he used to inflict a lot of damage when we faced up against Indy and I'm sure he'd be a solid addition to our running game, particularly after releasing BJGE. Also delighted we've secured Brandon Bolden. Had an outstanding season just gone with Mississippi and will be a good prospect if he can navigate camp.

In other news. I tried to get a Tebow jersey for Saturday but could only find one. Was all set to buy it until the guy said it's a Reebok jersey. Thought to myself, no chance, that has to be a fake so told the guy to bolt. After doing some investigating it turns out that Reebok have indeed brought out Tebow jersey's. Interesting that they're adding in a huge HD screen. Perhaps a quicker and more open avenue for everyone to see video replay of marginal calls?

It's a stadium I'd love to visit one day actually - chance of getting tickets are next to none mind you, but even to see it in the off season would be cool.

I was having a look at stadium capacities the other day and was extremely proud to note that we (Michigan) have the 3rd largest stadium in the world!

Ohio State aren't far behind actually DH, with 7600 less seats - I genuinely didn't realise the horseshoe was as big as that!

And asking a favour of the family we have in New England is more hassle than it's worth! They've already told me they've bought me a Red Sox shirt for coming over in October and I'd hate to look ungrateful by asking them to get something else too.

I have seen a few pictures of the supports bars and complex within Lambeau and it looks amazing. I'm not sure the exact reason behind the HD Screen i thought they just thought the older ones looked a bit small and dated compared to some of the other ones in the league in a keeping up with the jones's kind of way.

I noticed the Michigan being 3rd biggest on wiki a few months ago and just assumed you knew :greengrin. There are some stadiums that i knew were big but not THAT big, such as Penn St and Texas A&M

I always knew the size of the horseshoe although a lady did say to me once, it's not the size that matters. It's what you do with it that counts .

As for your family, I ment can you no buy the jersey and get it sent to their address instead of over here? That way you can get them to send it as a gift and therefore avoid any taxes etc.... Has anyone ever played football over here? My flatmate and I were looking at going along to train with the Aberdeen Roughnecks (who have just been accepted into the BAFANL) and coincidentally their manager stopped us on the street the other day (I was carrying an american football) and asked if we wanted to join. Unfortunately they train on Sundays and I work Sundays but I think I'll try and get along at some point.

I trained at Uni, not regular due to the crazy amount of training my Uni team wanted. Was meant to go play for the Bournemouth Bobcats in the mens league but that fell through sadly. Played Running Back and Linebacker but never got far due to the training!

My first experience of playing was in the US when I was over on an exchange year at Uni. I didn't get to play any of the actual games (due to the number of legal loopholes in terms of insurance/contracts etc) but I trained 3 times a week whilst there which was an honour!

With Michigan? Very impressive :aok:. Do tell, who made it to the pro's from your year.

Actually from my time in Connecticut with the Huskies (2009). My posting in Ann Arbor was as a research assistant over a 5 month period and I didn't have the time for much else! Plus, the football season had just started and Michigan are a lot more restrictive.

As the UConn squad is a wee bit smaller than the bigger schools, most of the folks I trained with were eventually regulars in the team.

A few of them went on to play in the NFL - one was on the roster in San Diego last year (Kendall Reyes), Lawrence Wilson (Tennessee), Jordan Todman (Minnesota), Anthony Sherman (Arizona), Marcus Easley (Buffalo), Reggie McClain (Atlanta). Sadly, this was also the same year when Jasper Howard was part of the Huskies and was stabbed to death in the hours after we beat Louisville in Hartford. Never knew him really, but it certainly put a black mark on the season.

The real standout for me was Johnny McEntee, who was in his second year at UConn at the time. He broke through last year and started most games and is now in his senior year, so will enter the draft and hopefully into the NFL at the end of the forthcoming NCAA season. He became quite famous after his Trickshot Quarterback video appeared online. His accuracy was frightening, but at that point, he was still working on strength, maneuvering and play recognition.

I don't mean that to sound overly grand or anything - a lot of the time, there was a group of us who trained separately away from the main team to allow them to get on with it. It's a bit like Uni sport over here, whereby there are different levels of ability and they were very much the equivalent of the "first" team. However, it was an honour to train with these guys on the few occasions we were all put to

A wee bit intimidating when you see the size of these guys though, as their weight programmes had evidently been in place since high school. I'm about 5'9" and quite slight of build so very easily knocked down. The myth that the QB is never hit in training is well established, but I can assure you, you take one or two at that level and taking hits with my physique from some of these guys was a brutal experience!

I reckon JM probably can make it. He looked a lot more self assured when I watched him in the few games I seen of UConn last year, despite the Huskies taking beatings at the same time.

I trained with the Eagles and Magnums after playing junior contact football for three seasons. Was a fairly rubbish QB, was better on defense.

Calvin, potentially decent Seahawk trade for TE Kellen Winslow. At the end of his career but a quality player.

Before that the wife and I are moving to Chicago (her hometown), which means no longer will we be forced to watch the game in the wee hours on some crappy stream online. It's gonna be good. Added to that is some hope after the Bears ditched Mike Martz and signed some decent players this off-season.

You've signed some absolutely outstanding players and Cutler back from injury. A good dark horse for the Superbowl in 2013.

Jersey came from FansEdge yesterday (ordered 31/5, arrived 6/6).
Had no extra shipping charges or taxes
The top itself is much better fitted than the reebok versions especially the sleeves! I ordered a medium and would say that was perfect for me (I'm roughly 6ft and quite slight in build).
Overall I'm more than happy with FansEdge and would recommend to anyone!

Now for the Big Blue to repeat the feat!

Except the O-Line is terrible and Cutler makes worse decisions than a bank manager with millions of pounds of other peoples money.

As well as the fact they play in the Packers and Lions division.

Trivial matters! We were doing OK last season (before the injuries) and you would have to think the team will be better with the new players. I'm relatively new to this but I read online Martz's system was the worst possible for a weak o-line, lots of deep drops, little of allowing Culter to move around (supposedly what he does best) and no audibles. IF the system is designed to play to our strentghs then maybe the o-line and Cutler will look a lot better. Cutler quite obviously hated Martz's system - there is a great video of Cutler telling Martz to "go F*** himself" when he was given one play he didn't like during a game - so a happier more settled Cutler will hopefully perform better. We just need to sort out the Forte situation now.

Looking forward to playing the cheeseheads and the Lions are just plain dirty, hopefully we'll teach them a lesson in the autumn/winter! :greengrin Bear down!

I've said this all along. Going to be some interesting times ahead, that's for sure. Can't wait to see what happens when we've got the 2 of them on the field at the same time. Apparently he's also gonna be used a lot on special teams as well so I'm guessing we'll see a lot of trick plays and fake punts/field goals.

I don't say this as a "pop", but the Jets coaches should be worrying more about the basics before trying to conjure trick plays and fakes.

Granted, getting rid of Schottenheimer was probably a start but I'm sure most Jets fans would be happier to see a more cohesive offensive units than fake punt and field goal efforts.

I just don't understand the logic in Tebow one bit, either on his and his "people's" part or indeed the Jets as an organisation.

Having a second string QB who proved himself to be able to get things done is going to generate pressure from the media and fans in New York from the very first mistake Sanchez makes. Sanchez is hardly a "superstar" QB who can help develop Tebow further and Tebow himself has already proven himself as good enough and shouldn't be settling as backup.

It just puzzles the life out of me why either party thought this was a good thing!

James.
19-07-2012, 11:58 PM
I probably find myself in the minority of Jet fans as I still feel Sanchez can be a very serviceable quarterback for us. If you look at his numbers, they're very similar to both Eli Mannings and Big Ben's during their first three years and look what they've both become. He's shown he can win big pressure games and hopefully a return to ground and pound football will instill a bit more confidence in his play. It's clear he is going to have the backing of both the front office and coaches for the full season, just can't see them giving Tebow any starts after the contract they gave Mark during the offseason.

Why do you always play so nice :yw:. Take a pop all you want . And to be honest, I agree with everything you've just said. That's why it's so interesting. The thing about all the trick plays is that for them even to have a chance of working Tebow will have to be on the field when we aren't running them. Time will tell just how much of a risk it is, let's just hope it doesn't bite us in the asp.

I thought a few time last season that Sanchez was restrained by the offensive co ordinator.

Totally. BS has to be up there with the worst and he cost us big time. Not just last year but even more so the year before. Problem is, if you think Snchez was restrained last year wait till you see this year. Our new OC is even worse and we are def going back to the ground and pound game (which is were Tebow maybe fits in). Our RB's aren't up to it so they better have something up their sleeve.

Wow - Paterno also loses all his wins from 1998-2011 as well which means he goes from 1st to 12th in the all time list for college coaches.

These sanctions seem a lot worse than this "death penalty". Have to agree that it seems really harsh for those players that were not affiliated with this scandal (Although I see that current players can transfer from PSU to elsewhere if they wish)

Wow - Paterno also loses all his wins from 1998-2011 as well which means he goes from 1st to 12th in the all time list for college coaches.

Agreed. Still they were debating on Sports Centre (or college football live, I cant remember) about should the players be allowed to leave without restrictions... Ridiculous IMO, they had NOTHING to do with the scandal, now some players who didnt make it but could look back at their college football career with pride have nothing. Think that is wrong IMO.

I'm curious - what is your view on Rangers potentially being stripped of titles? Applying the same logic as above?

Slightly different I think, the players in the Rangers case were being paid illegally (whether they knew it or not) while AFAIK College players dont get paid (except by their degrees I suppose) and were there on merit, hardwork and they wanted to be there for their education and to play under a great coach - they didnt have any notion (as far as we know of course!) of what was happening or the cover up and they play a sport that is balanced and fair. Rangers attempted to screw the opposition and create an unlevel playing field which AFAIK didnt happen in this case.

Quite right, they don't get paid (hence Ohio State's issues last year) but it's incidental here. The Rangers players (whether they did know or not - footballers are, on the most part, not the sharpest bunch and rely on advice) went out on a weekly basis and played football, won games and won titles as a result. Yes, Rangers as a club dealt with their fees/wages illegally but why is it right that the player's hard work is undone because of the directors etc behind the scenes? If the players weren't implicit in the EBT scheme, surely they don't deserve to have "title winner" removed from their CV's?

Just my tuppenceworth.

You make an interesting point Scott. It would be hypocritical of me to say that Rangers players who did no wrong should lose the titles that they won. I guess the difference being that Sandusky's actions did not influence the outcome of games, bowls or recruitment of players meanwhile the decisions of a number of people at Rangers created an unfair advantage for them on the playing field. In retrospect, those players who contributed to titles at Rangers should never really have been there in the first place but you can't blame those players for taking the money on offer I guess.

Fair enough Scott, I guess I am torn between the fact that it isnt really the players fault so they shouldnt have the titles taken away and the fact that the club did screw the playing field for an unfair advantage and therefore the club should have those titles taken away...

It is a bit difficult.

What's with the $60 million fine. It's a drop in the ocean for them. They received well over $200 million in donations last year alone . I think the death penalty is to do with a restriction on the scolarships. I'm not sure if I've got it right but I think they are being restricted to 15 a year while reducing their current squad over the next 4 years. If I'm right it doesn't leave much of a scope for a team, especially when you've got to think players who would have gone there won't because of it all. Don't see the point in the bowl ban because they will be lucky to even win a game in the next couple of years. It's a pity because I enjoy watching them play at home as it's a cracking atmosphere, especially in a night game and when all the fans are in white .

Oh, and who says the players don't get paid .

Decent pick up. I'd be a little concerned that he's lost a bit of his edge the past two years but when he's on it he's still an above average WR. Came to the Jets with a lot of baggage from Cleveland, however he matured and had an incredible year with us in 2009. Was sad to see him go and in hindsight we'd have been better retaining him than picking up Burress.

I actually think Edwards is a good signing. I think he's an upgrade on Mike Williams (providing that Carroll knows how to get him fit and on form) but was a little surprised to see him sign just after we got Antonio Bryant. As such, I wouldn't be surprised to see Bryant cut before the final roster.

If he captures his form from a couple of seasons ago he should be a good signing. Was sad to see him go and would take him over what we have at the moment.

I did think about that, but presumed Haymaker was exclusively asking about TV.

I toyed with the idea of NFL TV, but it's a bit out of my budget just now (as my PhD stipend ends in September).

For the first time ever, I'll probably need to rely on online streaming or seeing games when I'm home at my parent's.

If you sign up for gamepass the now it's only £99 for the season. Remember though, they block the SKY games and you don't get the play-offs or SB.

I've got Sky and ESPN so don't think that Gamepass offers that good value for money for me. Also don't like watching things on a laptop screen (although I like the idea of watching matches out and about on my iPhone.)

On another note, I see that the Seahawks cut Bryant today. My football knowledge must be improving!

It's not that bad. They just block them as live. You can watch them during the week along with all the other games that week as every game is archived. If your a big football fan I'd say it's worth it as you can be watching games every day. Also if you follow a team who's not on TV over here it's worth it as at £99 that's only what, £5 a game. I think they are trying to do something in regards to the playoffs and SB so will be interesting to see what happens when the current SKY deal runs out.

Rumours of the NFL offering Vilma a deal to drop his suspension from a season to 8 games if he drops his court case. Surely this indicates that the NFL and Roger Goodell dont have the evidence which they claim they do on the Bounty Scandal.

Drew Brees interview on sunday was excellent and I agree that no one will trust Roger Goodell until he either shows us his supposed evidence or admits he hasent got any.

That game was painful enough to watch first time around. Dont think I could watch LSU blowing it so bad again.
