I don't watch much American football, but that last play seems like it'd be the equivalent of being 30 seconds away from winning the World Cup and then walking into your own box and picking up the ball.

It was probably the equivalent of missing an open goal to win the cup.

they have the best RB for that situation and they chose to pass, I have no idea why.

That is truly the worst thing I've seen in my time as a football fan. Truly truly mystifying.

Me and my friend both pretty much shouted at the tv when Lynch moved away from the backfield, neither of us could believe they weren't giving it to him. What a ridiculous play call! Something that whoever called that play is going to regret for a long time.

To pick that play, over handing it off to Lynch, of all the running backs in the league. I'd fire whoever was responsible for that.

Thats what I was thinking - unbelievable decision to throw it at that point in time.
Great game really enjoyed it - the last couple of mins of the game made for brilliant viewing

With 4 hours to reflect, that was a truly great game. For all the talk of Brady vs the LOB, we racked up almost 400 yards of offense. Wilson was incredible second half. And then Brady came back again. The goalline call was the stupidest thing ive seen in 30 years watching the sport, but whos to say if we hand it to the Beast, Lynch doesnt get stopped on the goalline anyway? Well done the Patriots.

I have four hours of work this morning and then im planning on going back to bed for the afternoon. Yawn.

He was mostly ineffective on short yardage against our run D all night too but his TD earlier came on short yardage.

I agree with Bollah, it's one of the strangest calls I've seen in my time watching the sport though after seeing something similar happen to us against the Giants (with Manningham!) I was glad we weren't punished for insane bad luck again!

Been a long time since I was taken on such a roller coaster ride watching a game and I don't think I managed more than a couple of hours sleep - thankfully I'm working from home but I can see me crashing this afternoon.

Even if he was trying to throw a curve ball by passing when running was the obvious play, at least go for it on 3rd down, to have 3 chances to get the ball to a dynamite running back and not try it once beggars belief.

:agree: - had they gone to him (he was my candidate for MVP had the Seahawks found a way to win) I reckon it might have been different. Having said that though, the interception wasn't about height - Butler was just quicker off the mark. I'm actually surprised Wilson didn't try and run it himself - that's what I thought was coming when Lynch stepped out of the back field.

Bizarre ending a nail-biting game. That ending, you can't script that. I was like "Not again!!!!!" when Kearse came up with that ball. Very baffling last call of the game but I have to think they thought they could catch us off guard but it didn't work. But as others have said, why not use up your other downs first?

I don't know enough to assess who deserves blame, but Bevell seems to be unpopular in general, not just because of Sundays shenanigans. Wilson is a talented quarterback who is constrained by a conservative game plan, is a common complaint. Which is fair comment when we rank last in passing yards season after season. Personally I like watching a running game, but I'm old fashioned like that. As long as we keep winning and getting to superbowls, I think calling for anyone to get sacked is a bit daft.

I've always thought Bevell was good at playing to the strengths of the squad - he knows we have one of the weakest receiving corps in the league (whatever Doug Baldwin says) and two of the best runners - why would he go any more aggressive? Although maybe if Matthews is the player he looks like he could be then things will change!

I feel a wee bit sorry for him if what he wrote publicly last week is true. I know he is in a program and he has to abide by the rules so this not me making excuses for him, but apparently he had something like 4 drinks on a plane to / from Vegas after the season was over. According to Gordon, his previous infraction was due to him inhaling second hand smoke from a joint. I should read more because he's an amazing talent who has some off-field issues. How deep are those issues? That depends on which side of the story you believe. If he's been banned for a year for having four drinks after the season has ended, I think that is a little harsh.

1. It varies by team but getting tickets can be tricky when you consider there are only 8 home games per year in the regular season. Go through a reliable source and be prepared to shell out. It's a once-in-lifetime thing so it will be well worth it. You can even contact the team and tell them what you're doing, they might offer to help out (but I wouldn't hold my breath).

2. I doubt you will get killed with an Eagles jersey on in San Fran, they're not really known for being crazy, but you never know who you're going to meet. Not so sure about Raiders fans. Or Eagles fans for that matter. Personally speaking, if I had any doubts and my team wasn't even in the game then I would probably not wear it. I don't have an issue where my gear when my team is actually playing. From my experience it's usually a good, fun time with lots of banter. Get your wife a 9'ers shirt when you're out there and hide behind her. ;)

Cheers for the advice, I'll definitely go through reliable sources for tickets. Might even try the UK49ers club as my missus is a member.

Will probably leave the eagles jersey in the hotel on game day and buy a niners tshirt. Will wear it proudly in Vegas though and no doubt get some banter.

I was in San Francisco a few years ago for a conference. I arrived on the Saturday, rocked up to the stadium on the Sunday (it was against the Rams) and got a ticket with absolutely no bother. This was at Candlestick, but I doubt it's made a huge difference their relocation...it was also in early December but they were doing fairly well and still in contention...

2) You should be killed for wearing it but you'll be fine  - I turned up wearing a Patriots baseball cap and ended up chatting away to the 49ers fans sitting next to me - as soon as they notice the accent, they'll want to talk to you out of interest anyway.

I have two issues with this new development re: the kicking ball:
1. There was never any issues reported with the kicking balls.
2. The kicking balls are shared by both teams. Any advantage / disadvantage of an unauthorised kicking ball would affect both teams, unlike the non-kicking balls which are used by one team and one team only.

I don't think we'll let Maclin go to be honest.

Having said that, it seems like Chip Kelly likes to do what Belichick does with receivers and running backs in that he doesn't have any real star names, but good solid players who he can use to plan for game by game depending on who best fits the offensive plan.

It is going to be an interesting free agency and draft, we've got a bit of money to spend now, so should be fun.

I'm hoping Thomas might end up in New England - a successful pass-catching back who has great numbers...

I was originally a bit worried when I seen 'Marshall to the Jets' until I remembered that it would be still be Geno Smith throwing the ball to him. Trading Cutler for Smith? They must be offering a LOT of money.

If you'd have given me my perfect trade for Seattle it would have been this one. We've not had a good TE for years, and that position is key for Russells read option. And he's the best player in the league in his position (sorry Pats fans but he just is). Added to that his name is an analgam of my name and my sons :greengrin and it is daydream stuff.

Its fair on the surface, Unger heads the other way with a first round pick, we get Jimmy and a 4th round pick. Unger is a probowler so it makes sense for both teams. I don't think he was going to go anywhere else really if he wasn't staying with us. Personally, seeing how much you paid, I'm glad we didn't fork out that for him, despite how good a player he clearly is. Definitely a player in Jets green it's going to be difficult to hate going forward. He was integral in our Superbowl win last year. Alongside Skrine, you're looking pretty solid at CB for this coming season and with Decker and Marshall, you have 2 solid receivers. You're building a good looking team now - still think you lack a QB capable of delivering a winning season personally but he's young. With decent weapons around him, perhaps he'll improve.

I'm disappointed with our off-season thus far but after a winning season last year, I never doubted we'd cut some big names and bring in some new talent - it's just the way we operate. We could be doing with picking up a decent CB as with Browner currently out of the picture too, it leaves Kyle Arrington as our main CB, which is a horrifying thought. Having said that, I don't expect us to be genuine contenders next season anyway!

We'll go from the worst secondary in football to possibly the best in the space of a day. Makes sense - an elite defense might just counter our QB woes. I'm happy enough with Fitzpatrick - he's a proven if unspectacular quantity. The AFC East should be a bit more competitive this year. I imagine you will probably still win it but it's good to see the other three teams actively looking to improve.

I think it will be quite competitive but right now, I wouldn't favour us to win it all J.

Our defense has been stripped apart by losing not just Revis but also Browner and Wilfork...Kyle Arrington as our lead secondary is a terrifying thought! Revis and Browner were instrumental in doing what we couldn't in seasons gone past, which was getting our defense off the field in 3rd down situations and reduced giving up huge yardage downfield.

If you keep building the way you have in the past few days, in addition to some of your good acquisitions last year (Decker being a good example), you're going to be in a good spot if not this season, possibly next. Given the receiving options of Decker and Marshall, even a mediocre QB like Smith or a reasonable QB like Fitzpatrick can put up reasonable numbers.

We've signed Brandon Gibson and re-signed Brian Tyms. We're apparently interested in Reggie Bush and Percy Harvin as well as Jabaal Sheard and Ahtyba Rubin...Hardly inspirational off-season work so far but it's the Patriots way!

As bollah pointed out above, every single year I bemoan our activity but every year we take players who very few people have heard off and turn them into successes.

I don't know what the formula is in New England but it does work! I look at the players I've been stunned to see released and find myself questioning, "where are they now" a lot of the time - consider Moss when he left, Welker, Vinateri, Maroney, Ty Law and Asante Samuel...all gone on to do very little.

Whilst I don't think that'll happen with Revis and Browner (they're too good as players), did the Patriots perhaps see something that just wasn't worth the money? Certainly in Revis' case - he'll be 30 at the start of the season so I can understand why we weren't forking out the same money New York offered.

We've acquired a few defensive players since all of this unfolded so at least they're plugging the holes.

I liked Browner but he was / is a penalty machine and I think that is something the BB won't tolerate. You're right about all the players you listed. I would add Richard Seymour to that list as well. We seem to have a knack of getting the best out of (some) players and getting rid of them either at the right time because they decline, or maybe they just don't prosper as well in other teams' systems.

Or maybe we're garbage and we just win because we cheat all the time. ;)

Good post. Its the system in New England, not the players that make it work. Its the same in Seattle really, we tend to the same thing every season systematically. spoke to my cousin today on skype, word in louisiana is the reason why we are going more strongly to the run with less emphasis on the pass heavy offense isnt just to make Brees more efficient this year but also to make the team more ready for his successor, been quiet talks now that we fancy drafting the "next aaron rodgers" apparently thats meant to be Marcus Mariota, with the amount of draft picks we have picked up it wouldnt be much of a move from 13 up to 2, id be truly  if that was to happen though but nothing the Saints have done this offseason has been the norm.

We sign a TE...quite confusing as it's one position we're quite set at with Gronkowski and Hoomanawanui. He's a good TE, no question but an odd acquisition for me.

Gutted that we didn't bring Wilfork back - arguably the the best and most consistent defensive lineman we've had in the past decade!

Can't help but agree with Rex Ryan's comments yesterday - everyone's improving and we appear to be going the other way at the minute!

Incidentally, I seen a very odd thing when I popped into Tesco earlier - a chap wearing a New England Patriots t-shirt and a Seattle Seahawks baseball cap. Talk about your ultimate glory hunter!

I think Chandler, at 6'7", will be a good addition. Gronk and Hernandez were a good combo and we've never really had that lately with Gronk's injuries and Hernandez murdering people. Hooman and Wright haven't cemented their spots for me. I was initially surprised with this acquisition but I think it could end up being pretty deadly. Imagine if we were able to make Chandler into a similar threat as Gronk, now teams have two (physically) massive TEs to contain.

You know what we're like, we don't sign stars (often).

I see our trick plays against Baltimore last season now result in a 5 yard penalty this coming season

Sorry but if players report as eligible to the officials, I don't see the problem - the officials perhaps didn't then report it properly but that's their fault, not ours!

These 'trick' plays, so long as they're legal, are the type of plays that give offenses a slight edge and teams need to come up with new plays owing to the fact that their offensive plays are scrutinised in game films.

Additionally laughable is the fact that the New York Yets have filed tampering charges against Robert Kraft for publicly saying that we wanted to keep Revis in New England...how is that tampering?

Woody Johnson speaking publicly about his desire to sign a player who was still under contract in New England at the time WAS an attempt at tampering but I don't see how a rueful comment about a departed player also constitutes.

Because you're apparently not allowed to talk about players who are under contract with other teams. Bizarre. I assume you can talk about players but you're limited as to what you can say about them. Ridiculous and if the League doesn't recognise this for what it is then all we can do is laugh while we march on towards #5.

I actually think he was a gangsta who couldn't make the transition to professional football player. It shouldn't be necessary the but people who knew him well (the real him) should have taken him aside and told him it's time to hang up his gun belt and concentrate on what was to be a promising career. I'm sure many other players have given up bad habits to be a success. He was either stupid or his ego was so big that he thought he wouldn't get caught.

We actually end the season against the Dolphins in Miami.

I started last season with a sense of optimism but I think we've lost too many players to contend this year - Rex Ryan was quite correct - I think everyone in the AFC East has strengthened so far except us.

Perhaps just as well as I think we have a testing schedule this year - road trips to Dallas, Indy, Denver and the Giants...our home schedule is pretty friendly but some tough away trips.

Don't fancy our matchups against the Bills much this coming season either incidentally.

What's up with the Sky coverage listings by the way? Presumably they've just not chosen their Sunday games yet? They have all of the Thursday night/Monday night games listed in the schedule but no Sundays.
