You support a team. They are neck in neck in a wildcard race with two weeks left in an 18 week season. But your star QB has played his regulated 16 games so the rules say you have to bench him in favour of your untested rookie? And the same situation is happening at maybe the Wide Receiver or defensive end position, and your opponents star players maybe by chance (by suspension, injury etc) have already missed their two games and are therefore ready to batter your team in the crucial week 18, playoff deciding clash?

Ridiculous. Leave the season alone.

It might encourage teams to use their untested rookies more regularly through the season in preparation, rather than having them be benched for entire games at a time and making flash appearances. Teams will need to schedule their players in accordance with their schedule and identify games they can perhaps afford to pass over to their backup cast. Playing a team that are weak against the pass? Rest your elite WR. Playing a team with a dreadful defensive line? Rest your star RB.

The season is so short, and there's such a long wait between them that most fans would surely be happy for more football?

I'd rather a team succeeds by individual exploits by the best players on the field, rather than that kind of season management of arbitrarily imposed league rules, but each to their own... :aok:

I remember (just) the old 14 game season. So I don't have a problem in principle with moving to longer seasons. Its specifically the bench players idea that's wackadoodle...

I know it's only pre-season, and I know it was just the Lions, but I was really impressed by our draftees last night. Winovich, Harry and Stidham all looked very comfortable in their respective positions. Harry adds speed and physique as a wide-out, something we've not had in years. Winovich is explosive off the line, and got pressure on the Lions QB regularly and Stidham looks so cool in the pocket, but is equally happy breaking out and passing on the move.

We're 3-0 in pre-season so far. I understand pre-season means dick, but what's encouraging me is that our secondary string players are really stepping up and playing some good football to put themselves in contention.

Surprised we released Ryan Allen through the week - he'll be a great punter for whichever roster he happens to land on but I guess BB et al are looking to the future.

I stayed up to watch the Dolphins Jags games last night.

Our O line is still an absolute mess, with the exception of LT not one area is fit for purpose. On the positive we improved tenfold when Rosen came into the game. He scrambled well when he had to, got the ball away under pressure and there seemed an emphasis on getting the ball forward quickly and a 99 yard TD drive was good to watch. The less said about Fitzpatrick the better. There shouldn't even be a 'quarterback competition'.

Saw this stat on Twitter earlier:

Most passing TDs in first 6 NFL seasons:

Dan Marino 196
Andrew Luck 171
Peyton Manning 167
Russell Wilson 161

Most passing yards in first 6 NFL seasons:

Peyton Manning 24,885
Dan Marino 23,856
Andrew Luck 23,671
Matt Ryan 23,472

Whilst being an NFL QB has become a far easier job in recent years it's still one that is likely to see you hurt a fair few times. Good luck to him in whatever he does next.

Marino achievements dwarf the others in that list because he was playing in an era where the rulebook made it harder for qbs than it is today. Nobody had seen anything like it. Accuracy and arm strength combined. He revolutionised the sport.

Ouch! Sorry mate - at least the results perhaps made up for what was a pretty brutal one in Lanarkshire today!

Stanford secure a win by sacking, forcing a fumble and recovering for a TD with 30 seconds left when we were leading 10-7 and hanging on a bit.

Laremy Tunsil and Kenny Still traded to the Texans by Miami for 2 1st round picks, a 2nd round pick and a 4th round pick plus 2 players.

I'm gutted to see Tunsil go, he's a franchise player but we are absolutely loaded in next year's draft and have huge cap space. We'll be lucky to win 4 games this year so will likely have the number 1 or 2 pick and have room for manoeuvre to trade well on top of that. It's never nice to lose week in and week out but it's hopefully the start of the complete rebuild we have needed for about 2 decades.

Minkah Kitzpatrick to the Steelers from Miami for a 1st round pick! We now have 3 1st round picks next year with one likely to be the 1st overall.

I don't get who this trade makes sense for really. He's a great player and can cover a lot of bases in the secondary. The Steelers have just given up what is likely to be a top 10-12 pick though and we have gained a 1st round pick for a guy who was.........a 1st round pick. Surely if you are tanking with the aim of rebuilding you don't let your 2 best young players leave within a week of each other?

Steelers get someone who's not as much a gamble as a first rounder straight off and probably at a higher level than where they'd pick in the first round. They get 3 years on a rookie deal for the cap then 1 year extra if it works.

And Barkley left early. It wasn't perfect but it damn near was and it's made better by the fact the team is generally really poor. And the pundits all slated the giants for taking who'll turn out to be the best QB in the draft at 6...

That went well. [emoji23]

First rookie QB Since 1970 to throw 2 TDs and run for 2 TDs whilst throwing 300 yards plus.

And Barkley left early. It wasn't perfect but it damn near was and it's made better by the fact the team is generally really poor. And the pundits all slated the giants for taking who'll turn out to be the best QB in the draft at 6...

It's just the beginning but what a start for DJ

What a huge match up tonight, Rams at Seahawks, even at this stage of the season. So many key battles, if Russell Wilson keeps playing as well and controlled as he has been, (8 TDs and zero interceptions 4 games in) , I can't see the Hawks losing. Also depends which Rams D turns up. Beer in fridge :aok:

Can’t wait for this one. I’ll grab a quick nap after the Arsenal game as I want to see all of this one!

Looking forward to the London games coming up too.

I’m moving to Brisbane in 10 days so very soon the early games will have a 3am kick off time, but the late games and prime time games will kick off at 6am and 9:20am so actually are looking quite good for me!

Such an exciting contest. Night game at clink, some tremendous match ups all over the field, is Gurley finished? will the Rams even give him the ball? Are they the worst Oline in the league? Which Rams D will show up? Both teams with strong starts but nobody really knows if either are capable of a sustained legitimate run at the Superbowl.

Wow what a big win. Russell just keeps doing it. Quite an ending with that FG going just wide right, but I think it was a deserved win. Some stupid risky play calling (by Pete I guess), doing read option lateral plays when we have a lead when we should have been just running down the clock...keep it simple!

They are, but not many teams beat the Patriots twice in a season and they'll likely have to play them again to get to the Superbowl.

Although the AFC is a weaker conference in general, we could have a final four of Patriots, Chiefs, Ravens and Texans which would be 3 of the most exciting QB's in the league and the GOAT.

I'm coming round to the idea that we might have a pretty good head coach in Brian Flores. He's cobbled together a team made up of rejects, misfits and inexperienced players and it seems like they will run through brick walls for him. He also took the tough decision to ship out guys like Fitzpatrick and Tunsil who were unhappy about the rebuilding plan and unwilling to engage with what he is trying to do.

With a crazy number of draft picks and huge cap space I'm intrigued to see what he can do in the next couple of seasons.

He was certainly a great coach during his time in NE. I also think he'll come good, but he needs to be given the time and resources to build his time. He's inherited a ****-show and, as you say, has done a good job in starting his rebuild after some period of reflection.

Some really weird results this weekend - Browns beat the Bills, Dolphins beat the Colts, Titans beat the Chiefs, Jets beat the Giants, Falcons trounce the Saints.

I agree with you. For the first time in a long long time I feel like we are in really good hands. It’s been clear to see how well we have been coached week on week. We literally have no stars in our team, with Jones and X being injured. What we do have though is young, inexperienced players playing for deals, which is good for them and us.

No matter what happens in the last quarter and a bit in NE I'm just glad we can end the season with a GIRUY to all the commentators and pundits who called us a 'disgrace to football', 'immoral', 'cheats' and other hyperbole.

The Miami roster is woefully short on talent but every player and every coach has played their heart out this season and there are 3 or 4 teams who never had to face the same accusations who are going to end the season with a worse record than us.

That's quite a result, especially considering the Pats needed that win to claim a first round bye. You have a surprisingly decent record against them iirc?

The problem with Miami is the players you are trading away for draft picks (Tunsil, Tannehill, that RB thats now ripping it up at Arizona, Drake?) are clearly better players than they looked in a Dolphins uniform. Why is that? What is it about the organisation that makes them underperform?

It's all about the 2020 draft now!

I think for too long a lot of players saw Miami as a place to go to earn some money, get a bit sun on their back and live the lifestyle. Flores was clear from day one he wasn't interested in egos or individuals, it was all about making the sum greater than it's parts. Given he served his apprenticeship working with the New England defence it's not hard to see how he came to have such a philosophy.

I'm not surprised any of the players that moved on are doing well. I'm delighted for Tannehill. Whatever his faults he never lacked heart, he spent season after season getting battered behind an awful O line and just got on with it. Give him time and we'll make plays. He's not said a lot since leaving Miami but has hinted both parties agrees it was time to move on. For our part Fitzpatrick has been fun to watch, he clearly loves the game and he'll take the hits all day behind the line. I'd take him back next year. I think Drake was a similar issue, good RB but struggled with little protection. Tunsil and Minkah Fitzpatrick both showed some real quality in Miami but were actively looking to get out when they saw, or thought they saw, the way this season was headed. Hopefully there really has been a culture change and players that come in now realise they are here to work for a team.

As for the draft I'm not sold on taking a QB at 5. Burrows will go at 1 and I'm not sure Tua is worth the risk that high up, both with injuries and his NFL potential. Andrew Thomas from Georgia, Tyler Biadasz from Wissconsin and Tristan Wirfs from Iowa would be who I would be looking at with our 3 first round picks. Build the line and go from there. I daresay a WR and a RB will be on the shopping list as well.

Lone Bengals fan here. Good end to the season with a win over the Browns. Next year should be a fair bit better with Burrow (hopefully) and Jonah Williams back healthy. Offensive line should be improved and Mixon has been superb the second half. Small upgrade at WR should hopefully mean a sound offensive. Defence will be a problem I would imagine.

What stood out was the physicality and the lack of mistakes from both teams. The hit on the goal line at 4th down was as good as it gets. Losing to them is never good but there were grounds for optimism, specially on offense.

So wild card weekend is;
Seattle at Philly
Minnesota at New Orleans

Basketball's ok but in general I agree. I just don't get the attraction of American Football or baseball either for that matter. I read recently that the ball's in play for just 11 minutes on average during each NFL game. For a game that has an official length of 1 hour but lasts around 3 hours that is incredible.

I accept I'm in the minority though and it's incredibly popular in the USA and becoming even more popular here too.

Burrow has been exceptional this season, but he was pretty ordinary last season and would have been backup to Haskins if he'd stayed at OSU.

I wouldn't be trading anything away to get him, especially when Wentz has just beaten our single season passing record despite having no receivers for the season and only Edtz to pass to.

Brady hasn't necessarily been the issue per se this season. The protection and time he was getting (or lack thereof) were a key reason why our offense failed to fire. That, and a very thin WR cohort presenting him with very little to throw at...

I don't know what to expect next year. We're already a few years past where I thought we'd get to in terms of beginning an extensive rebuild. I still feel letting Jimmy Garopollo go when we did was a massive mistake, as he was clearly a natural heir to Brady - he knew the system, played in a similar style and the age of Brady when they traded him away still puzzles me. Despite spending an early draft pick on Stidham last year, I don't think he's ready to fill the gap that would be left should Brady not return next season...

We're guaranteed to lose McDaniels in the off-season, so I don't think BB will leave in this off-season. He'll want to train a protege to take over from him when he decides to retire - personally, I've always thought he'd hand the reins to JM so I'm a little surprised he's interviewing with other clubs...

The last rebuild when we transitioned TO BB and TB all happened very quickly - unlike then, I can't see Kraft et al rushing into anything in the next few weeks.

First three running backs on the roster all injured, and our only good offensive lineman out injured, so yes, our running game is non existent. Beast Mode coming in is the big unknown. But the Packers are apparently weak down the middle so could be a weak spot to exploit?

Our secondary is very ropey, which Rodgers will probably exploit, but our front seven are playing really well.

With the Seahawks its all about Russell. He can pull out wins when we dont really deserve them.

Some of our play calling is really bizarre. Like its designed to be stupid in order to confuse the opponent. Sometimes it works. Sometimes not so much.

Id probably make the Packers favourites as well.

That summed it up quite nicely. We are pretty terrible (and yet for the second season in a row in the playoffs when everyone was predicting a 7-9 or 8-8 season).

It’ll be so difficult with all the injuries... but now that Russ has remembered he has Tyler and DK, I’m more optimistic for the improbable.
