I'm in a few Dolphins Facebook groups and they make this place look calm and measured by comparison.
We had a good draft. We needed a weapon for Tua and after adding Will Fuller in FA, we took the best available receiver on the board at 6. We needed a pass rusher and if Jaelon Phillips stays fit we got a steal at 18. That was more pressing than a running back so passing on Harris made sense. We needed someone on the O line and we got one from Notre Dame who always produce in that position, we took a safety for depth. The tight end was the most surprising pick but with Gesicki and Smythe both potential free agents next year and the former likely to demand big money coming out of his rookie contract it makes sense. An OT and finally a RB in round 7, which based on recent years could well mean some success, rounds of a decent weekends work. Add to that we still have 2 1st round picks next year thanks to the trade with the 49ers and Eagles.
The moaning from some fans is unreal. People threatening to go and support other teams and predicting we are going 2-15, 7-10 and other doomsday scenarios. I get it we have under achieved or just been plain awful for years but everything is moving in the right direction. The AFC East will be competitive next season so it's hard to say with certainty we are a play off team but we were close last year and on paper look better now than we were then.
Seahawks.net and their Facebook page is very similar, absolute hysterics and drama queens in a cauldron of negativity. It makes me even more convinced that a cocktail of not being at games, explosion in social media use and mental health pressures due to lockdown is making ALL sports fans a bid madder than normal.

It’s been a poor draft for stupid names, which is always what I look for first. Early favourites were both drafted by the Panthers, (clearly they like drafting just on the basis of names too) a running back called Chubby Hubbard and a TE from Notre Dame called Tommy Tremble. I’ll be watching their careers closely.
Tommy Tremble is a New York Post headline waiting to happen...

funnily enough, seen some Bears Facebook pages with a decent proportion of hysterics and whining. Just drafted what appears to be a franchise QB that few thought we’d have a chance at getting, and a cracker of an offensive linesman in an area of weakness, with several complementary players, and some folk still aren’t happy,

He’s behaved like such a prick the last offseason, definitely spoiled his legacy if that’s him walking away so close to the season.

Think he’s on a mission to show the Packers that he’s the man in control, and because of the finances he has them over a barrel.

its the protection thing that’s one of the 2 biggest issues, the O-line are a sieve. The other is the coach, who appears to be trying to force a style of play on the QB/offence that doesn’t utilise his strengths at all

They mentioned in the commentary that the coaches think he’s a bit slow to process things and that they were trying to play to his strengths, but he didn’t really get much of a chance to process anything at the weekend, he was either sacked or on his bike on almost every play. He’ll obviously have easier games, but it’s going to be a baptism of fire with that offence in front of him.

Not even $30 dollars, the NFLPA have a free scheme offering rides to players any time day or night to prevent these things happening. They'll even run your car home for you.
Inexcusable to drink and drive in any circumstance let alone do 156mph in your car in a residential area.

See I was discussing this yesterday and saying "surely if you are a pro sports teams you get a car service on the books so all your players are safe".
To find out the NFLPA has that in place and this asshole still got hammered and drove at 156mph and killing some young lady? Absolutely disgraceful. He's going to jail and he better be prepared to be there for a while.

There’s a level of entitlement and ‘the rules don’t apply to me’ across some elite sportsmen, it’s not restricted to the NFL, there was Jack Grealish pranging cars during lockdown, Kyle Walker caught twice travelling beyond the allowed distance during lockdown, some of the tax stuff in Spain, sexual assault and worse across multiple sports, etc.
You wonder how much of it is driven by (nearly) a lifetime of being told you’re amazing, you’re wonderful, and people cutting corners for you and making allowances and excuses for you.

This won’t be a popular view but I feel sorry for Ruggs. I have no idea what he was thinking but that one night changes his whole life. God knows I did some stupid things when I was young?(granted I never drove at 156mph when drunk), and often it’s just luck when you escape without some sort of disaster. He’ll probably be 50 when he gets out of prison with his life in tatters and he’ll be chewed up with regrets and guilt.

The covid situation is making a bit of a farce of the league.
I stayed up to watch the Miami v New Orleans game last night and the Saints roster was a joke. They had a guy in the offensive line who signed to the practice squad on boxing day and was elevated to the full roster yesterday to start. Not a single snap in practice. They had Blake Bortles as back up QB who signed on Christmas Eve. The rookie QB was sacked 9 times and hit a further 13 times, it was verging on abuse.
It puts us in a position where we can win out and be guaranteed a play off place so to that end I'm not complaining. There's little sporting merit in such a win though.

John Madden has died John Madden: NFL coach, broadcaster and video game icon dies at 85 - BBC News (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-59814542)
Legendary American Football coach and commentator John Madden has died at the age of 85, the National Football League (NFL) has announced.
The league said he died unexpectedly and did not give a cause.
Madden led the then-Oakland Raiders to their first Super Bowl victory in 1977 and became a hugely popular television analyst after retiring from coaching.
He later became the face of Madden NFL Football, one of the most successful sports video games ever.

The Ravens were down to their EIGHTH choice cornerback against the Packers the other day (and still kept it close, amazingly). The NFL is always affected by injuries after a long season in any normal year, but the pandemic has just taken it to a whole new level. Its made a lopt of matchups a lottery.

NFL draft- Springtime Event where the best college players in the country get picked by the NFL pro teams. Worst NFL team from previous season gets first pick of the top young player in the first round, then in ascending order so the 32nd and last pick is owned by the previous years best team. Then you start another round, i think there’s now seven rounds in total(But picks get traded between teams, eg.if you want to trade for a player you can swap him for a pick). This lad who grew up in Aberdeenshire and went to college in Michigan is projected to go in the first round, which means he’s very very good.
Edge Rusher- the really athletic fast big defender who rushes at the QB from ‘the edge’ of the ‘line’ (the ‘line’ is the line of the biggest 5 players on the offensive and defensive units who line up and charge into each other when the ball is snapped back to the QB). He’s often crouching over the lineman when the other linemen are down in a 3 point stance (like a sprinter) or a 4 point stance. The edge rusher is one of the most important positions on the field because a good player here can disrupt the oppositions passing game.
Picks-players you get in the draft. Due to trading with other teams, the Eagles have 3 1st round picks this year, which is very unusual and should mean they have a good young team to work with in the next few seasons.

The Eagles treated it like the last pre-season game where all the starters are rested to avoid the risk of injury.
Dallas on the other hand played most of their starters including Dak Prescott for most of the game, only taking them out in the 4th quarter. Can't really read anything into the result last night.
I think that the eagles will be out in the first game of the playoffs though, I don't think there's any chance we beat the rams, bucs or cardinals (depending who gets 2nd and 3rd seeds).

I don't know how any management can expect a head coach to get a decent offence when you are having to work with that rubbish.
Elway is likely to be out of the picture after this season so the new GM will have to try to pull off some miracle at QB, it's not a good off-season to be looking for a QB, no real prospects available in the draft and nothing in free agency. They'll need to try to get a trade on the go, maybe make a swing for Russell Wilson?

three more fired
Three NFL coaches have lost their jobs on a day known as 'Black Monday' because of it's history of sackings.
Miami Dolphins parted ways with Brian Flores, Minnesota Vikings sacked head coach Mike Zimmer and Chicago Bears fired Matt Nagy after all three teams missed out on the play-offs.
The Vikings and Bears also relieved respective general managers Rick Spielman and Ryan Pace of their duties.

I think that’s particularly harsh on Flores and Zimmer, Nagy was always a dead man walking at the Bears. Those three teams are just characterised by not having great QBs.

Getting rid of Flores is madness from Miami.
Stephen Ross has redeveloped the stadium to bring it up to modern standards and has built a state of the art training facility. He has owned the Dolphins since 2009. In that time we have had 6 head coaches, 1 play off appearance and 3 winning seasons. 2 of those 3 are in the last 2 years and is built on one of the leagues best defences and you sack the head coach. Madness.
The issue is the ghosts of Shula and Marino still loom large. No one is getting time to build anything because we are an organisation living in the past. It's like Nottingham Forest sacking managers because they don't win the Champions League.
Fwiw I would stick it out with Tua rather than giving up a stupid amount of picks for DeShaun Watson. There are so many issues needing addressed on offence that giving up 3 1st round picks plus 2nd round picks would be crazy. Tua has done OK (a B- maybe) playing behind the worst OL in the league and with no running game to speak of until Duke Johnson pitched up a few weeks ago.
Runour has it the Broncos are already keen to speak to Flores, I have no doubt at all he will go there and be a success.

GB were pish last night and didn't deserve to go through. Rodgers keeps threatning to leave and the looks of it the fans are about ready for him to go. His production as an "MVP" was next to zero in a very winnable game. The Speacial Teams will bear the brunt of the critisism but the Offence should take it IMO.
Rodgers said post game he doesn't want to be part of a rebuild if he stays on which is fair enough but he will need to reduce his contract by a fair margin if GB are to keep a hold of their stars.

There comes a point when they just have to bite the bullet and move on but he’s still a great player. Jordan Love needs to develop and they have to cut the wage bill so some high earners may leave. Maybe this is the time. GB won’t win much while they rebuild but they’re not getting as far as they need to with the current set up. Maybe they never will.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback, 44, won seven Super Bowls in an astonishing career spanning 22 seasons.

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has announced his departure after 16 years in charge.
Payton, 58, took over in New Orleans in 2006, just months after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city.
He oversaw a remarkable turnaround, turning a losing side into Super Bowl champions in the 2009 season.
The Saints narrowly missed out on this year's playoffs despite posting a 9-8 winning season following the retirement of veteran quarterback Drew Brees.
At an emotional news conference, Payton did not rule out a return to coaching.

The taunting rule has been a terrible experiment, it has to go in the off-season. A 15 yd penalty is enough to completely change a close game, and a flag is being thrown for nothing more than a player screaming in a release of adrenaline or enthusiasm in some cases :dunno:

The Brian Flores v pretty much everyone else lawsuit could be interesting.
Some serious allegations including being offered money to throw games (particularly when you consider Stephen Ross's involvement with at least one gambling company). Meeting a QB (I assume Watson) in breach of tampering rules and then being essentially blackballed when a deal wasn't done. Also a text (allegedly sent to Flores in error from Bill Belichick) congratulating another person on getting the Giants job before Flores even interviewed, I think the allegation here is the Rooney rule was breached and Flores was interviewed with no intention of being considered for the job.
He's essentially just thrown away any chance of another NFL coaching job as he will be as unwelcome as Colin Kapaernick from this day forward so he must feel aggrieved enough to take such a step. Even if a HC role wasn't forthcoming this year, a year as a coordinator or position coach would have seen him considered again next year.

I don’t really understand American Football at all but what has struck me since waking up this morning is that I’ve seen next to nothing about the actual game despite seeing hundreds of posts, pictures etc about the Super Bowl.
I’ve seen that The Rock done a speech, I’ve seen that Kanye West had his face completely covered, I’ve seen that OBJ wore $200k diamond encrusted boots, ive seen absolutely tons of stuff about the half time show, I’ve seen Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, I’ve seen a player proposing..
Is the actual sport just a total sideshow to all this stuff? I had to Google who actually won because it didn’t seem like that information was forthcoming amongst the avalanche of information about celebrities.
Btw, I don’t believe for a second that $200k diamond encrusted boots are designed for peak performance. If I was his manager he’d be getting told to get them changed pronto.

Well OBJ done his knee in half way through the game, so that doesn't say much about the boots.
We watched it on Gamepass last night for a change so it came with the full NBC broadcast including commercials. Totally different experience to watching it on BBC or Sky where there is loads of analysis between plays, whereas on the US coverage the game itself just gets lost in all the ad breaks, which are sometimes more entertaining than the game itself.

From a 49ers fan, that's a little ironic (since they no longer play anywhere near San Francisco!).
Can't say I enjoyed the game much. It was a great finale, but two pretty insipid teams. Felt for OBJ doing his knee - probably a lengthy period on the injury table if it's his ACL again. Refs definitely didn't cover themselves in glory - it was great that there were so few penalties throughout the game, but the missed facemask on Ramsey and then they non-call in the End Zone that let the Rams get to first and goal were dreadful.
Half time show wasn't my jam either - I get the basis for it (being in California) but it felt dated and a little cliched.

Well said, the Rams are a **** team, they’re parasites with zero identity. To be outnumbered in their own stadium in a super bowl is pathetic. It was an interesting game with a lot of twists and a great ending, the entire first half the Bengals Oline held up pretty well, then they just seemed to implode and the Rams front four were all over Burrow. The Rams mortgaged their future on all these veteran free agents, congratulations to them but it doesn’t feel like a real ‘team’ to me, I definitely see no signs of a legacy. Burrow needs a better line and a blocking scheme that doesn’t leave him so exposed.
Bengals look as if they are building a decent team - if only they can protect their QB!

I see Flores has a job, coordinator in charge of linebackers and halftime cookies or something like that at Pittsburgh. 9 head coaching vacancies in the league, and a successful coach with a winning season at a weak team last year can’t get a head coaching job?
Fairly obvious what’s going on. Yet again, the NFL responds to claims of racism by blacklisting individuals.

It reeks, but given a number of other black coaches got HC gigs this year, the NFL can say "see, we're not racist at all", despite the overall process being incredibly flawed.
Would also note that it's very rare for guys who get fired from a head coaching position (especially their first one) to get another HC job right away. Those guys are generally expected to go elsewhere and be a coordinator for a few years before trying again.
Him not getting a job as a DC does seem to suggest that he's at least been partially blacklisted.
I was wanting Flores back in NE, ideally as the DC but I guess BB is comfortable with Jerrod Mayo and Steve having the reins there.

I think the key thing is he got the Dolphins punching above their weight with a weak roster. Without the pending racism lawsuit he'd be top of a few franchises lists. Id certainly have him over Old Man Time Carroll in Seattle.

Almost impossible to predict where he will end up. So many teams in the middle of the draft need an edge rusher. Denver, the Giants, the Eagles (who have 3 picks in the first round)??
Baltimore Ravens have picked him up in the 2nd round
NFL Draft 2022: David Ojabo joins Baltimore Ravens in second round - BBC Sport (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/american-football/61282835)
David Ojabo has been selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft in Las Vegas.
The 21-year-old linebacker, who was raised in Aberdeen after moving from Nigeria aged seven, had been projected as a first-round pick before tearing an Achilles tendon in March.
The injury meant the Michigan University star was passed over on day one of the NFL's annual event.
But his slide stopped when he was taken with the 45th pick on Friday.

Yeah, I was sad to see he had a serious injury at just the wrong time. Pretty sure he would have been a top ten pick otherwise. I’ll be watching his career at the Ravens, a team with some heritage at the linebacker position.
Packers coming to play at White Hart Lane next season.

I watched the Nebraska v Northwestern game last night, it was played at the Aviva stadium in Ireland. It was a pretty good one to watch but a little reminder as to why I stopped watching CFB. Unlike the NFL it seems CFB haven't adapted the game to make it run a bit smoother and take less time. The game lasted about 4 hours, I would say most NFL games take about 3 these days?
Anyway it was fun but I don't want my full Saturday night taken over.

Think it was because of all the pomp and ceremony of it running on TV as a special broadcast.
When I was going to Stanford games regularly pre-Covid, 3 hours was the maximum time taken as there are far fewer commercial breaks during the NCAA broadcasts.

Yeah they treated it similar to a play off game or something similar so kind of get the additional ad breaks. I'll keep my eye out to see what's on but the week 1 fixtures are usually a bit dull due to the way they schedule things. This whole Tua concussion story is not a good look for either the Dolphins or the NFL. With the continuing focus on CTE and player welfare it's a pretty grim episode. I watched both the games on Sunday v the Bill and last night at the Bengals and it was obvious that he was dealing with a head injury on both occasions, regardless of the revision to the story between HT on Sunday and the 1st injury report of the week. I don't blame the player, he looked to be on the verge of a breakout season and he's a tough guy, of course he wants to play. Players need protected from themselves though and the events of the last 2 games calls into question the integrity of both the medical team in Miami and the independent medical evaluator(s) put in place by the league.
From a purely football point of view I really don't know what the Dolphins were thinking either. We had a tough start; with the Patriots, Ravens, Bills and Bengals I would have been happy with 2-2 but wouldn't have been surprised by 1-3 or even 0-4. To go into last night at 3-0 was very good. It was a tough road game on a short turnaround after a war with the Bills. Just sit him and go with Bridgewater and give him time to recover for the upcoming games. We are now going to go into a better run of games against the Jets, Lions, Steelers, Bears, Browns and Texans (I would have been looking for 4-2 minimum from that) with a back up who looks washed for a fair few of them. Suddenly a winnable run of games looks a whole lot harder. A pretty self destructive few days on a number of levels.

It's weird, the short term thinking is the opposite of what they should be doing with him he's a potential franchise QB. When Aaron Rodgers went through a few concussion concerns from afar I thought it was handled well, they bit the bullet and gave him a few weeks off and built him a better helmet to protect the sides of his head.

Yep, when he got up after the hit in the Bills game he was staggering, the commentator called it out, said he was 'woozy', but then after the game the team call it a back injury, Tua himself says its a back injury, and nobody flags it up until he gets slammed on the head the very next week?
With all the care and attention the league is supposedly paying to this issue because of the high likelihood of future litigation it was a really bad look. I didnt particularly like McDaniel talking about 'only' a concussion, either.
Bridgewater is one of the leagues better backups, and with those two receivers Waddle and Hill you only really need an average QB to have an explosive passing game. I think Miami will be fine.

NFC west is a very weird division for bogey teams. No matter which team is better in the NFL overall, the 49ers always beat the Rams, the Rams always beat the Seahawks, but the Seahawks always beat the 49ers! (16-5) over 10 years. Absolutely awful scenes in Cincinnati tonight.
As things currently stand the players have been taken off the pitch for a while after one of the Bills players suffered a very serious injury, leading to him needing to have CPR carried out on the pitch.
I'm a fairly recent convert to this sport and I've been taken aback at quite how hard they hit each other. Obviously you expect muscle injuries and the odd broken bone but you don't expect anything like this.
Hard to see how the players can regain their focus and continue this game.
Very reminiscent of what it was like during the Christian Eriksen incident.
Here's hoping it has as as positive an outcome as that but it didn't look or sound good.
Thoughts are with Damar Hamlin.

The hit looked fairly routine, a big hit but something you see multiple times in a game.
Not sure if the subsequent collapse was caused by the contact or if the timing was just a coincidence.
Latest updates on Twitter seem to suggest Hamlin has a pulse but isn't breathing on his own. Horrible to watch and hopefully there is some positive news soon.

I think the Eagles will win it. I'm looking forward to the It's always sunny in Philadelphia episode already.

I'm done trying to stay up until 4.30 then work the next day.
Wife is taking the 2 kids to her dads for the half term break so I have the house to myself. Going to avoid the score all day tomorrow, use my flexi to finish early then make a bit of a feast and sit and watch it tomorrow evening. Skipping the half time show, butchering of the US anthem and all the other added on drivel.
Just out of interest, how do you pull this off? I have done this for a few Hibs games on Alba, watched it three hours after its happened and stay away from radio or internet for a few hours...but a whole day avoiding the result for such a huge event? Is it no screens rule all day and hope you dont meet any fans of said sport or those teams through the day?

There's only one guy in my work into the game, although he's more a college fan, and he knows not to say anything.
Avoid here, no TV in the morning, no internet at work, walk to work so no car radio and turn off notifications on my phone and I should be ok.
I'm going to start at 6.30 so all being well I can leave just after 12 so not too long to avoid it really.
I daresay the plan will go south by 7am but worth a try. I'll still watch it even if I do know the result.

I don’t start until 3pm tomorrow. Alcohol doesn’t mix well with my work so I won’t be drinking but I’ll stay up and watch it then get some kip before work.
This is my first year being into American football. I went over to see relatives in Texas in October and they’re all mad for it. At the start of the fortnight I was feigning interest and by the end of the holiday I was hooked. My 13yo nephew plays, we went to see his team play (he was not playing himself as he’s had to have knee surgery) and my brother in law and nephews seem to base their lives around watching it / playing fantasy football and I got totally drawn in.
Just trying to figure out which team to root for, tonight and next season.
Chiefs tonight. Dolphins thereafter 👍

Is the correct answer.
Albeit telling someone to support Miami is a bit like suggesting they support Hibs. You are enrolling them in a lifetime of near constant misery.

I thought the Dolphins were excellent against the Bills a few weeks ago, J was expecting a bit of a pumping with the first choice QB out but it was quite a game.
I’ll need to check with the family in Texas that I don’t get disowned for it and give it some further consideration.

It’s one of the things that attracted me to being an Eagles fan. Had a similar state of a lifetime of misery until 2017. Was very relatable and a wild couple of years through 2016 and 2017 for me!

And we wouldn’t have it any other way! Still longing for our 2016 moment.. and kid myself every year it can happen. That’s what it’s all about.
*I realise it won’t feel anything like 2016 of course

It's easier with NFL as its not as big news here than a hibs win but I shut myself off from all news and social media until the day ends. If I think someone is going to mention it to me I tell them I don't want to know as I have taped it.

Fitzpatrick, ex Dolphins Washington QB in fact is great value. Intelligent informed comment. Be good if sky sports get him permanently.

I'm not an expert but got up and watched the second half of the superbowl.
Considering all the mass of coaches, statisticians and advisors on hand there didn't seem to be much defence going on. The Kansas guys virtually walked in to score.
And what about all the controversy with the incomplete pass or whatever? It puts our VAR delays into perspective!
Nevertheless, the finale was gripping. One minute the badly but expensively attired Kansas ladies were going radge. Then some Philly lawyer types in suits were punching the air.
And it all came down to one guy.
