Patriots add right guard, Brian Waters - superb addition to the roster and in an area where we desperately needed an addition.

Surprised to note we've cut Brandon Meriweather - I thought he was one of our stand-outs last season and made some crucial interceptions for us. Good acquisition for Chicago though.

Meriweather seemed to do little else than catch interceptions which, while useful, is not all he had to do. Still alot of them were awesome interceptions.

I am more suprised that Brandon Tate has gone, always liked him... luckily I didnt get my new Jersey with Tate on the back! ha!

What did you all think about the first weekend back for College Football then?

I thought it was quite good, I thought ESPN could have shown better Live games in the evening though.
I managed to watch Baylor win, Ohio St. the first half of the USC game, Boise St and the Oregon game (on the sunday afternoon).
Bring on the NFL

Quietly impressed, though no real upsets to speak of (other than Baylor beating TCU).

Was disappointed that I didn't get to see 4 quarters of Michigan football, but I was delighted to note that we're an evening game vs Notre Dame next week - 8pm KO (Eastern Time) and live nationally on ESPN. We arrive in Orlando at around 4pm, so plenty of time to get settled in and organised to watch it.

From a personal pov pretty gutted to have lost to unranked opponents at home having outgained them 2 yards to 1 on offense. Failure to execute at critical moments ie picks in the redzone is what cost us. Might get a hiding in Ann Arbour next week sad to say

Hard to say really - didn't see enough of us to say for certain, though our weakest aspect was our D last year and they looked pretty tight, but then again, the quality of opposition wasn't quite on a par with Notre Dame.

I have a wee confidence, as we're at home and have a decent record against you in recent years, but "optimism" and "Michigan Football" aren't words I use in sequence too often

Definite all nighter tomorrow!

Good coverage on the TV actually. Saints @ Packers tomorrow night on SS2, and Steelers @ Ravens and Giants @ Redskins on SS3 on Sunday night followed by Cowboys @ Jets on Channel 4. Last televised game I can see is Patriots @ Dolphins on ESPN on Monday night. Anything shown on British TV that I have missed out?

Sunday is gonna be a decent day, the Hibs game followed by three NFL matches. Nothing like a birthday night out in front of the TV!

Can't wait to the start tonight. Although it's never easy to do it 2 years in a row I think the packers may just pull it off. They had 10 players on the injured reserve list last year when they won it so will be looking much stronger this year.

The Redskins beating the Giants was a pretty major surprise. Could the most unfancied team in the NFL actually challenge the NFC East hierarchy?

Another predictable start from Seattle, losing to the powderpuff 49ers in the useless West. The Seahawks have decided not to bother with the quarterback position this year. I mean, who is this guy and what has he done to earn a starting jersey in the NFL?

Watched the highlights and we look really poor this year. Five sacks was just cringeworthy, the offensive line may as well not have turned up at times. The problem is we don't even have strength in the other areas of the team to compensate for not having a top quality QB.

Dam, wish I knew you were on the other night. Would have got you to join me on the game forum on NFLUK. Place was full of Cowboys but we had some good crack and talked some good football. Got to agree with you about Greene. Hopefully he will come good but on the plus side we've got LT so all isn't lost. Thought he was one of our better players again on Sunday. My main concerne is Sanchez, I just can't see it. Fair does, for him to work on it he has to throw the ball but the Cowboys didn't have any fit corner backs on the field and he was still dodgy at times. He's gonna struggle against better teams so think we need to go back to the running game, which again brings up the Greene issue. Not happy with Revis either. I realize QB try to avoid him but think he has to do more than he has since he signed his contract. In saying that, I can't believe Cro is on $32 million. Bryant was injured by the way so god nows what would have happened if he was fit.
Make no mistake about it, although it was a cracking game to watch we got lucky but in Rex we trust and I just love it that under him we never know when we are beat. Our previous teams would have lost that game :agree:.

I liked what I saw from Sanchez on Sunday, especially the plays leading up to the Keller TD - I'm not too concerned at this stage. The Dallas D threw everything at him, especially with the way Turner played, and he coped pretty well. Reading Rex's comments it looks like we'll be using the running game a lot more against Jacksonville so let's see Greene step up then. I just can't see any fault with Revis, he's a shut down corner and got us the interception which won us the game.

A cracking 100 points for my Alex Smith-led fantasy team and I still lost my match up!

From reading a few match reports there were a lot of positives to take from the game, but our weak areas are gonna cost big point concessions.

2006 was before my time as a football fan but from reading about that match it sounds like we'll need refereeing equally as dodgy to do something on Sunday afternoon.

It's weekly mate. Real easy to play. Basically you have $18 million each week to fill your team. I say team, it's the QB, 2X WR's, 2X RB's a TE, Kicker and a D. As long as you stay in budget you can change the whole team every week to suit the match ups and if everyone picks the same players it's cool (No draft). Have a look. Worth signing up cause it only takes one good week and your in with a chance of winning a trip to the superbowl :aok:.

Bad news for the Big East - I wonder if they'll try and get a few mid-west schools, the likes of Kansaa and Kentucky to join. What chances Notre Dame deciding to join that football conference? Is it more profitable for them to be an independent?

Yeah I'm not happy about it, I love the Big East basketball league. Kentucky won't leave the SEC and Kansas would be a long shot..............this conference realignment is really like a domino effect when colleges start to leave conferences it triggers others to do likewise in a "run to the lifeboats" type way. Everyone is scared of being stuck in a declining, weak and therefore less lucrative conference.

I think it is more profitable for Notre Dame to remain independent cos they get have their own TV contract which they don't have to share with anybody. More than likely I can see Notre Dame ending up in the Big 10 though, geographically it just makes sense.

Gatecrasher

CFC
17-09-2011, 06:01 PM
so, why is everyone leaving the Big East?

Its not really a powerhouse football conference (only 9 teams from the Big East field a football team) and football is by far the bigger of the 2 college sports (more than basketball). Then, there is a precedent for this: Miami and Virginia Tech defected to the ACC in the mid 2000's.

Like I said its like a domino effect, once one college looks like leaving the others start to worry about what moves they will have to make lest they end up in a declining or weak conference. We've seen that this summer with Colorado and Nebraska leaving the Big 12 whcih caused Texas AM to apply to join the SEC.

If I were a betting man I'd say that the Big East and Big 12 are living on borrowed time.

Huge win for the Big Blue! They seemed to have every offensive play picked perfectly against the Eagles D and our much depleted defence looked decent. Manning looked the part once again, only concern was how much we let McCoy run the ball, but then again he looks very good this season and can see him rushing for big yardage against a lot of teams! Hello again folks.

Just back from a decent couple of weeks in the USA - nice being able to watch games at reasonable hours for a wee change! Was in Gainesville for the Florida vs Tennessee game last weekend and what an atmosphere - not quite the Big House, but nonetheless, impressive!

Landed in Florida in time to watch the Michigan vs Notre Dame game - a combination of jetlag and the score almost made me give up at half time, but I'm glad I stuck with it. What a game - the pass from Robinson to get us in position with seconds to go was just sublime. Also beat San Diego State, with Brady Hoke getting the win he so badly wanted - can't believe we're ranked ahead of Ohio State and Michigan State mind you - a bit surreal. A lot of noise being made about LSU, the Sooners and Crimson Tide - from the SEC games I saw whilst in Florida, they look deserving of the accolades.

Was moderately happy with the Patriots start, but was a little weary with how we defended against Miami and then also gave up some pretty easy points to San Diego - combine that with how the Bills had started and I feared the worst ahead of last night. Brady had been scintillating in the opening two, but threw far too many bad passes last night and a good Bills team picked him off and did the damage. They also expertly set up their winning field goal in running down the clock to ensure we couldn't come back - superbly executed!

Can't believe the only 3 teams who are currently sitting 3-0 are the Bills, Lions and Packers - I though the Panthers were going to take the Packers last week for sure...

Just about to hit the half and Michigan look well on course to retain the Little Brown Jug, leading Minnesota 38-0, in what has been a bit of a beat-down in all honesty. Denard Robinson has looked unstoppable today and our defense has looked brilliant, shutting Minnesota down at every turn.

Stunning first half from the Wolverines! Might as well enjoy this, as I don't like the Patriots' chances tomorrow in Oakland.

51-0 and counting, with 9 minutes left in the 4th quarter and that's without Robinson, who didn't come back on for the 2nd half!

Superb result for us ahead of a difficult road-trip to Northwestern next weekend.

Wow - what a hard few weeks the Buckeyes have ahead of them:

Today: vs Michigan State
8th Oct: @ #8 Nebraska
15th Oct: @ #24 Illinois
22nd Oct: vs #7 Wisconsin

By contrast, we have:

8th Oct: @ Northwestern
15th Oct: @ Michigan State
22nd Oct: vs Purdue

If we can take the next 3 games, I'd be a wee bit more confident of facing ranked Illinois and Nebraska teams, prior to the Buckeyes arriving in Ann Arbor.

I wanted to watch the Michigan vs Minnesota game, but it was on the Big Ten network, so no streams available.

I did watch the Michigan State vs Ohio State game though - was a battle or attrition and not the best games to watch.

OK that's that. Game has just finished. Look at the bloody time, 34-17 Ravens win. Has to be up there with 3 of the craziest quarters I've seen in a long time. Worst I've seen us play since Rex came and he won't be happy. Total joke. Said it before and will say it again, this team is going nowhere fast and with the schedule we have I honestly can't see us even making the play-offs.

Have you seen our D since the season got underway.

So long as you can get to Brady quite as effectively as you managed in the playoff game last year, you have a chance.

A lot can be learned from watching how well Buffalo played our offense.

It's been long held that "defense wins championships" in the NFL, so they (Ravens) look good for now, whilst not exactly struggling to put numbers up on offense.

I don't think it matters who gets to the Superbowl from the AFC, as both the Packers or Lions look like Superbowl winners right now :greengrin

I'd take your D over our O at the moment. We are a power run team who can't run the ball . Our O-Line is struggling big time and if Mangold is still out we can forget about it. On top of that remember that we have Sanchez as our QB and while he gets a lot of unfair stick he still has Schottenheimer calling the plays.

Hopeful we'll have Mangold back as it was brutal against the Ravens last week without him, can't really put much blame on Mark at the moment when he's getting no protection from the O line. Disappointed that Holmes has been shouting his mouth off this past week, not exactly the actions of a captain.

On the plus side the Brady bunch have hardly looked great this year either, Revis will make Welker invisible for 4 quarters, Brady will be blitzed into next week & Bart Scott will breate all the doubters, the Bills will be brought back to Earth by the Eagles and we'll all be 3-2 come Sunday night.

You're right enough, we don't have the best defense in the league (certainly not against the run, which is a worry ahead of this weekend), but it almost doesn't matter when we look like scoring every time we go down the field. To say the entire team "doesn't look great" is a bit silly, particularly when Brady is on course to smash all current passing records if he keeps his start up!

I'd certainly like to see us tighten up a bit, but with Haynesworth and Wilfork in centre, we're not an overly mobile defensive unit, hence why the run has proven so successful against us.

Wee bit worried to read that Danny Woodhead, Sebastian Vollmer, Jerod Mayo and Julian Edelmen ALL missed practice and look unlikely to play.

Only game I can say we will win with any confidence is on the 26th November . My, my that has been interesting. The Patsies D really DO suck and are even making Greene look good. Really feared the worse tonight but maybe just maybe we might pull it off. Just look at the difference Magold makes to that line and as usual our D is stepping up. Not getting carried away though as still expect a Patriot win. With Buffalo winning again we really can't afford to fall to far behind but cut out the daft penalties and I'm happy with what I've seen so far.

I've only just been able to turn it on - ended up losing the huskies earlier tonight when I was taking food out to them and have been a bloody mess until we got them back.

Couldn't relax enough to turn it on earlier. Not surprised it's a close game to be honest - I think we're both 2 very average teams this year (though with 7 '3 and outs' and only 2 TD's conceded, we're not THAT bad) and Buffalo look like genuine contenders for the AFC East! We'll see though, we look like we're picking up a little bit now.

I agree DH, your schedule is hellish this season - I'm also not getting carried away - we might be #12 and 6-0, but we've hardly been tested yet! Michigan State next week will be a good test and we also have some ranked teams coming up (Nebraska should obliterate us, Wisconsin won't be easy) and I'm not expecting a win vs OSU, but I definitely don't expect it to be the usual blowout I've grown accustomed to since following the Wolverines.

Good defensive series there, stopping Greene twice and almost sacking Sanchez before he threw it away!

A good close game, but a good home win for the Pats, going to 4-1 alongside Buffalo. The way we transferred to the running game and hammered the Jets D in the 4th quarter was very impressive indeed.

We had a few players missing for the game today, so when we start to get a healthy roster in the coming weeks, I think we'll go from strength to strength.

Dallas at Foxborough next week, which again, won't be easy - our upcoming schedule is pretty damned hard all around to be honest!

Certainly looks like the 49'ers have improved, but the other teams in the NFC West look dross - St Louis and Arizona will both be lucky to win a couple and I can't see Seattle winning many more than 4 or 5 (though I must confess, I didn't give them a prayer vs New York). They might make the playoffs, but I doubt it'll go beyond that, as there are a LOT of really good teams in the NFC - Detroit Lions winning the NFC North or at least getting to the NFC Championship game though a WC spot would be an ace turnaround! Anyway, looking forward to seeing San Fran vs St Louis in December when I'm over there! First live NFL game in the states for a while!

Lads, in the abscence of Peyton Manning who do you personally rate as the best 5 or so quarterbacks in the NFL now? ARod is probably most peoples number 1 but after that? Brady and.......

Sorry to interrupt the perennial east-coast obsession :greengrin but anyone think the 49ers may be 'for real' this season? 4-1, offense on fire behind an obviously on-song QB and last night was a helluva result, blowing out another strong team...Maybe it will take a winning record to win the NFC west this season:greengrinThey were my pick to win the NFC West this year (having said that I picked them the two prior - eventually I was going to be right!) theyve been threatening to do this for a couple of years now. Weak division and really theirs for the taking. Alex Smith was their achilles heel but he seems to be putting it together - I put it all down to Harbaugh - great coach. Thats the Niners jinxed then!

Firstly, nice avatar :greengrin

I presume you mean for the season thus far and not just generally better than - if so, I doubt most people would give Rodgers the credit of being better than Brady YET.

There are actually a lot of good QB's in the league this year.

Aaron Rodgers (GB) - 14 TD's, passed for 1721 yards and thrown only 2 picks this season
Tom Brady (NE) - 14 TD's, passed for 1874 yards but thrown 6 picks this season
Drew Brees (NO) - 12 TD's, passing for 1769 yards with 5 picks so far
Matt Stafford (DET) - 11 TD's, passed for 1217 yards and only thrown 3 picks
Eli Manning (NYG) - 11 TD's, passing for 1486 yards and 5 picks

Cam Newton, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Shcaub and Matt Hasselbeck also deserve a nod for the numbers they're putting up thus far:

Cam Newton (CAR) - 7 TD's, 1610 yards and 6 picks (not bad at all for a rookie QB in the one of the worst teams in the NFC)
Ryan Fitzpatrick (BUF) - 10 TD's, 1233 yards passing and 4 picks
Matt Schaub (HOU) - 9 TD's, 5 INT and 1377 yards on the year
Matt Hasselbeck (TEN) - 9 TD's, passing for 1414 yards and only 4 picks thus far

Phillip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, Tony Romo and Mark Sanchez are all a little underwhelming right now - all good QB's, but not necessarily having great years to date:

Rivers has thrown for a decent yardage (1500+) but has had more turnovers than touchdowns, Romo looks good in games until his increasingly frequent 4th quarter meltdown, with 7 TD's for the year, but only 1200 yards passing, Roethlisberger is 8 TD/6 Int, with 1300+ yards passing and Sanchez has an 8/5 split, with only 1200 yards passing (no real surprise I guess, seeing as the Jets prefer to run the football).

Did you notice we're up to #11 in the rankings? Things are starting to smell rosey, if you catch my drift :greengrin.

I don't expect to win in November, but if we do, you'd best avoid .net for a few months, as I'll make your (virtual) life hell :na na:

That's more like it :casper:. Tell me, what's it like to lose one of these games? In all my time following the Buckeyes we've never lost :not worth. I make it 1 win in 10 and none in 7 for your lot. If ever your gonna do it, it has to be this year.

It's fairly horrible - I imagine it must be a bit like being a Jets fan to be honest - we've dominated you for years, but when the win finally came last year, how did that feel? That's how good I'll feel when I finally get to see us win a game vs the Buckeyes. We never won when I studied there, and we haven't ever won since!

We always have a chance in Ann Arbor (the last game in the Big House was pretty damned close for quite a while, against what was one of the better Buckeye sides in recent years) and I think there'll be a good belief that this CAN be the year. However, we improve each year and I like the look of the program under Brady Hoke - we'll continue to improve and I dare say Ohio State's recruitment might well suffer as a result of a very poor year and the damage the rules violation will have absolutely done to the school!

As much as I dislike the Jets, being rivals and all, I really hate the Colts and their fans. This is such a beautiful sight from a one-man team. My annoying Colts supporting class mate has suddenly become "neutral" and is "only really in it for the game, teams dont matter". Funny thing is, he cried when they lost the superbowl - not really neutral! :greengrin

Soz but Brandon Lloyd made one of the best catches I've seen and Tebow was running about like a mad man. Was exciting stuff :agree:.

Ive never liked the Broncos but you've just got to warm to Tim Tebow. Hes like a bigger tougher more charismatic Elway. Id play him every week.

Excuse the pun but it'll be just their luck that they end up with the top draft pick and get to pick up Manning's successor.

Harbaugh was a QB not with the Raiders though (I think). He really turned Stanford around from a Pac10 doormat to national championship contenders (if they had beaten Oregon last season they would have played Auburn for the title). He also recruited Andrew Luck.

Superb opening drive, followed by an awful defensive outing and poor second offensive drive has the game in East Lansing tied at 7-7, with the wind playing havoc with our offense this quarter!

Not having a great feeling about today, despite a decent start for RB Vincent Smith and Shoelace.

We just can't employ our passing game on account of the conditions in this quarter.

Have to tip my cap to the Spartans defense. They're just better than us.

(Another) shocking call from the officials - that was a clear fumble, but they deemed it a forward, incomplete pass! Bull**** call!

We had 2 officials for their second TD who disagreed it was a TD (one called it, one called it out of bounds) and they didn't even review it!

Buffalo Bills 24-27 New York Giants (Final)
Carolina Panthers 17-31 Atlanta Falcons (Final)
Jacksonville Jaguars 13-15 Pittsburgh Steelers (Final)
San Francisco 49'ers 22-19 Detroit Lions

St Louis Rams 3-24 Green Bay Packers (Final)
Dallas Cowgirls 0-3 New England Patriots
Houston Texans 0-7 Baltimore Ravens
New Orleans Saints 0-0 Tampa Bay Bucs
