Boris Johnson has urged Zelensky, Ukraine's president, to avoid making cheap concessions in peace talks while his troops are launching successful counter-attacks against Russian-held positions
The Prime Minister believes Kyiv should continue to make military gains before reaching a settlement with the Kremlin to ensure it is in the strongest possible position. A Government source told The Times: "Some of our allies may be too eager for him to settle
"We think Ukraine needs to be in the strongest position militarily before those talks can take place."

Unbelievable.
Two full-fledged axes of attack just collapsed and were abandoned within 1 or 2 days. They just left having achieved nothing.
We expected Russians to get entrenched to prevent Ukraine from reinforcing Donbas, but leaving completely, en masse… unbelievable

Lord Heseltine has told Good Morning Britain that Boris Johnson is a politician who “waits to see the way the crowd is running and then dashes in front”.
He said: “Well, I think that you have to see Boris as a career map. He works it out, he decides which way the wind is blowing, and that wonderful phrase about a politician - a man who waits to see the way the crowd is running and then dashes in front and says, ‘Follow me’.”

Indeed. The government due to cuts will put 400,000 more Britain's into poverty this year, that is enough to get the bs out. Vote Labour down south and independence up here. But they have been Ukraines best military partner in the last 8 years.
The US and UK were the only army training the Ukraine army on defense tactics. We trained hundreds of snipers and hundreds on using nlaws. We gave them almost 4000 nlaws pre war, had to fly around Holland and Germany airspace doing so in January because they didn't want to be involved in it. The nlaws changed the war more than many things.
Our refugees number although bigger is terrible. But that is because the tories set up a system that is anti refugee and they got trapped in it.
On a separate point I read something that agreed with what you said. It seems Zelensky is getting pushed to accept a deal but doesn't want to whilst winning. That's why he's said he wants a referendum on any consentions, so he can't be pushed
Just watched 6 planes flying in formation I assume up to Leuchars. Never seen that before.

It's bizarre how fast Russia has retreated East and west of Kyiv. Wisdom would say they would either bunker down and tie up lots of Ukrainian forces, or use air support to stop the quick advance. They are either short of men or airpower.

🚩One thing I find particularly notable: There are reports that Ukrainian forces pushed northeast of Ivankiv, and are now around 20km southwest of Chernobyl (I am still trying to confirm with visual evidence
This means that Ukrainian forces may soon reach the Belarus border, raising the question of whether #Russia will push back, and whether some Russian units aren't going to be cut off - hard to know if there still are Russian units on this axis
What's clear: The whole front northwest of #Kyiv is about to collapse as a result of a mix of Russian withdrawal/rout + Ukrainian counter-offensives that may have gone even faster than anticipated
The front east of #Kyiv is in no better shape as Ukrainian forces have continued to clear the area near Brovary (unclear if there were still Russian units there) and pushed past Novyi Bykiv

This is a nice thread showing what a game changer the British Starstreak MANPADS is in Ukraine.
You cannot even see the three Starstreak 'kill darts' that chopped this Russian attack chopper in half
.and it's shear mach 3 speed means it can occupy "Keyhole positions" which are safe for a helicopter to motor through at low level versus a Stinger heat seeker
A Stinger simply cannot get to that Mi-28 in time to avoid guiding itself into those trees
Starstreak could & did
This is performance advantage is why I labeled Starstreak a low altitude air defense game changer

The situation in/around #Bucha is hard to put into words. Some of the worst photos/videos I've seen since the war started
Seems every war-aged male was executed. Easily 500+ fatalities. Would not be surprised to see a final figure much higher than that, even.
Just saw a new video. The density of civilians corpses lying in the road is so high that vehicles have to continually swerve in order to avoid running them over.
Hard to watch. Even for the long desensitized
The Biden administration should immediately sever diplomatic ties with Russia
Attempting to collect some of these photos/videos to both geolocate and conduct preliminary fatality estimation. Unconfirmed reports of mass graves makes this an almost impossible task, as of now.

The images of what has been left behind in the greater Kiev area have been ghastly. We don’t even know yet what has gone on in the South and East.
It’s really hard to see how any sort of meaningful peace will exist in that part of the world for the next half century. This war is a catastrophe on so many levels, with so many losers.
I’m a proper pacifist at heart but tbh that is changing rapidly in response to what we’re seeing. This isn’t an evil that you appease yourself away from. Nukes or no nukes, I don’t think anybody on the side of civilised society should be walking away from the murder of civilians with their hands tied, and I think every single one of us needs to have a word with ourselves regarding what we might be prepared to sacrifice in order to tackle Russia (thinking mainly about the situation whereby there is still so much gas and money changing hands between Russia and Europe, leading to the continued financing of this disgusting conflict.)

Let there be no mistake, the blame for these atrocities lies firmly at the feet of Vladimir Putin and those who facilitated him. The liberation of Ukraine is only the beginning of what now needs to be done, sanctions and embargoes need to continue until the Russian people decide to deliver these monsters to an international war crimes tribunal.
We need to stop the whataboutery of blaming countries that tried to bring Russia into the international fold by trading with them and start putting the blame solely there where it lies, with Vladimir Putin.

The only way any sort of meaningful peace happens is if Ukraine deal a massive military defeat to the Russians. For that to happen they need huge military support from the west and we need to get way more serious with the sanctions including oil and gas. There needs to be a complete cessation of trade with Russia. And we need to stop messing about and supply the Ukrainians with the weaponry they need to win. That includes tanks and aircraft.

The talks are a sham. Neither side wants peace just now. They just don’t want to be seen as not trying. Ukrainians won’t stop now until they have pushed the Russians all the way back to Russia. And that include Crimea. And the population is 100% behind that.

Agreed. We can blame all the European and British governments for placating and being money focused towards Putin. 99.9% of the blame has to go to that evil man and his regime. Hopefully if any good can come from this systematic brutal acts, is that it will focus the rest of the world further

Definitely. There's literally no excuse now. Why should we push for peace deals. It's war crimes courts or nothing. The US is helping facilitate 56 tanks from Eastern to Ukraine, they say it will be days and not weeks. If they can send tanks why not jets. We all have to make as much sacrifice as we can bear, to stop all trade that is literally funding this brutality.

That's where I am. It's a tragedy on top of an atrocity, and there's no clean or easy way out for us or for Ukraine.

Dead civilians, lined up against the wall of a house, their hands tied, with bullet wounds to the head.
The worst was in the basement of the dacha.

The Mayor of Motyzhyn, Olha Sukhenko, was kidnapped by the Russians on March 23.
Her husband convinced them to let him come with her too.
Hours later, the Russians returned for their son.
The bodies of the family, brutally tortured, were found yesterday
Olha Sukhenko was targeted because she was a mayor.
Her body was found in a mass grave with 20 other Ukrainians, including her husband and son.
The head of a neighboring community in Kopyliv says her body showed clear signs of torture, including broken fingers and arms

From human rights watch
Human Rights Watch has documented several cases of Russian military forces committing laws-of-war violations against civilians in occupied areas of the Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and Kyiv regions of Ukraine. These include a case of repeated rape; two cases of summary execution, one of six men, the other of one man; and other cases of unlawful violence and threats against civilians between February 27 and March 14, 2022. Soldiers were also implicated in looting civilian property, including food, clothing, and firewood. Those who carried out these abuses are responsible for war crimes.
“The cases we documented amount to unspeakable, deliberate cruelty and violence against Ukrainian civilians,” said Hugh Williamson, Europe and Central Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “Rape, murder, and other violent acts against people in the Russian forces’ custody should be investigated as war crimes.”

Whilst I accept that there is merit in what you say, it does give the Russians the sort of benefit of the doubt that they’ve ruthlessly exploited for too long.
I take it the troops massed on the border are still performing an exercise?
Sadly the execution of civilians and the razing of cities to the ground fits in with words spoken by Putin himself and echoed by reasonable numbers of the Russian population.
Dithering in the name of well intended pacifism will cause untold human suffering in this case, of that I am sure.

The Russians wouldn't have been contemplating defeat and withdrawal which is maybe why they have been been badly exposed here before they've had a chance to clean up.
We really need to learn the lessons. The International Court of Justice should be strengthened to deal with territorial disputes and any cases for humanitarian intervention.

Article from human rights watch. Long article but horrifying
On March 6, Russian soldiers in the village of Vorzel, about 50 kilometers northwest of Kyiv, threw a smoke grenade into a basement, then shot a woman and a 14-year-old child as they emerged from the basement, where they had been sheltering. A man who was with her in the same basement when she died from her wounds two days later, and heard accounts of the incident from others, provided the information to Human Rights Watch. The child died immediately, he said.
A woman told Human Rights Watch that a Russian soldier had repeatedly raped her in a school in the Kharkiv region where she and her family had been sheltering on March 13. She said that he beat her and cut her face, neck, and hair with a knife. The next day the woman fled to Kharkiv, where she was able to get medical treatment and other services. Human Rights Watch reviewed two photographs, which the woman shared with Human Rights Watch, showing her facial injuries
On February 27, Russian forces rounded up six men in the village of Staryi Bykiv, in the Chernihiv region, and summarily executed them. Tetiana, from Novyi Bykiv, which faces Staryi Bykiv, just across the Supiy River, spoke with the relatives of four of the men who were killed

Why do the Ukrainians want tanks? Has one of the things about this war not been that tanks have been proven to be pretty hopeless in modern warfare?
Or do the Russians not have the same sort of anti-tank weapons that we/ the Ukrainians do?
Having said all of that, the situation whereby the Ukrainians would request tanks but the Germans would rather pay a fortune to have them scrapped seems odd to say the least.

You’re not paying attention to what I’m saying and seemingly getting irritated and a wee bit narky in your responses. It’s a bit pathetic you can’t accept credulity without getting an attitude. I would guess I’ve been a critic of Putin’s Russia for a lot longer than you have.
I’m not saying theses people weren’t murdered, obviously. I’m querying the stage managed nature of how they’ve been paraded and displayed and why Russian military would want that all over the worlds media. Waiting for a UN investigation before forming an opinion is apparently ‘unbelievable’ on my part though
Your saying you don't believe it and the Ukrainians might have staged it. Afp and bbc Jeremy Bowen were in ours after it was liberated. Every eu political leader has called it a war crime, I think they would only say that as the evidence is unbelievably overwhelming. The Ukrainian public are reporting the war crimes also. The evidence is overwhelming

Here in this long grave, 57 people are buried," said Serhii Kaplychnyi, who identified himself as head of the rescue services in Bucha and who was organising the recovery of the bodies. The mass grave is behind a church in the town's centre. Some of the bodies were either unburied or partially buried in the earth.
The mayor of a Ukrainian city on the northern outskirts of Kyiv on Sunday showed journalists dead bodies in an area that, he said, Chechen fighters controlled during the month that Russian forces occupied the city.
The mayor, Anatoliy Fedoruk, showed a Reuters team two corpses with white cloth tied around their arms which - the mayor said - was what residents were forced to wear by fighters from Chechnya, a region in southern Russia that has deployed troops to Ukraine to support Russian forces. One corpse appeared to have his hands bound by the white cloth, and to have been shot in the mouth. x "Any war has some rules of engagement for civilians. The Russians have demonstrated that they were consciously killing civilians," Fedoruk said.

Could be. Racism against Ukrainians from Russians is centuries old, they see them as "untermensch", Putin's war rationale is packed with russo-supramecy and religious sectarianism. The triggers for those things have been re-planted and amplified in most of the Western world in recent years. Our soldiers and the Americans and the Germans under the right conditions are just as bad "when let off the leash".

They could start by sending some weapons and condemning the rallies being held that are openly using the Z symbol.

Photos of murdered civilians in Irpin and Bucha by Russian troops recall the mass killings by Soviet and Nazi regimes.
This is not a battlefield, it’s a crime scene.
Mass killings of Ukrainian civilians by #Russia are clear war crimes
We need courage, moral clarity and more action to stop it. Indifference is the mother of all crimes.
Evidence must be gathered, saved for trials, and perpetrators must face justice.
We need a 5th round of strong EU sanctions as soon as possible
Finally, our top priority should be increased military aid to #Ukraine.

THREAD: Russian state-owned propaganda outlet RIA published the new programmatic article with the title "What Russia must do with Ukraine". The article reveals a detailed plan for a genocide, starting from full elimination of Ukrainian state. Details below
1) it calls almost every Ukrainian a Nazi who deserves death. "Nazis who took weapons, must be killed in numbers as much as possible... Not just the elites, the most of the people are guilty, they are passive Nazis, Nazi enablers. They supported these elites and must be punished"
It foresees tyrannic approach to culture. "Further denacification of the mass of the population is to be reached through ideological repression (oppression) of Nazi ideas and through harsh censorship: not only in politics, but in culture and education areas"
it foresees economic and political destruction of Ukraine: "Ukraine must pay for its guilt towards Russia. It must be treated as an enemy, and therefore may develop only in dependency to Russia. No "Marshall plan" may happen. No "neutrality" both ideological or practical
A tyrannical future emerges: "Personnel providing denazification in new denazified republics (plural! - Sumlenny) cannot act on another way but only with direct military-police and management support from Russia. Denazification must be a Deukrainisation
Ukraine is the enemy: "The history has proven: Ukraine may not exist as a national state. Any attempt to create it leads to Nazism. Ukrainism is an artificial anti-Russian construct... De-banderisation is not enough... Denazification of Ukraine must be De-Europeazation of it
Deliberate targeting of civilians: "The Bandera-elites must be liquidated, they cannot be re-educated. The social "swamp" who supported them must experience terror of war and learn the lesson, and pay for its guilt
Well, I expect from those who supported Russia in its war and who found excuses for Russia, to find excuses for these plans. And also for the purchases of Russian gas. The link to the article for those who want to google translate the whole text: https://ria.ru/20220403/ukraina-1781469605.html

It was only 10 years later in 1955 with the escalation of the Cold War that the Western Powers created the Bundeswehr to counteract the build up of forces in the Warsaw Pact nations. In 1956 the Russians created an East German version called the NVA (Nationaler Volks Armee) to counteract the establishment of the Bundeswehr. The Bundeswehr was set up as a defensive force with little to no offensive capabilities and was permitted to only operate within the BRD's (Bundes Republik Deutschland) borders by the German constitution. Similarly it was claimed that the NVA was also a purely defensive force but it is widely believed that some units were involved in Russia's invasion of Afghanistan.
After the Wall came down the NVA was basically incorporated into the Bundeswehr which maintained it's constitutional obligation of remaining a defensive force. Since then the Bundeswehr has under great pressure from Germany's Western allies committed troops as peacekeepers in Bosnia and in Afghanistan, however any involvement of German troops abroad has received widespread criticism at home. The German military today has only a small proportion of troops capable of deploying abroad.

2 Russian economists in the speigel say an oil and gas embargo can end the war. Will have a financial cost to the west but fair to stop genocide, but in no way hurts Germany more than Russia. It wouldn't be as tough on Germany as the coronavirus recession for example.
https://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/oel-und-gas-aus-russland-warum-ein-embargo-wladimir-putins-krieg-beenden-koennte-a-9537c522-5f56-4856-97bc-86080c2b7028
Why an embargo could end Putin's war
A guest post by Sergei Gurijew and Oleg Itskhoki
The fastest way to stop the Russian attack on Ukraine would be to stop imports of Russian oil and gas. Because the income from these deals has so far maintained the Kremlin's system of rule
As economists, we are not primarily concerned with moral arguments against Europe's decision to continue paying Russia for its oil and gas. It is of course true that Vladimir Putin is using this money for his brutal war in Ukraine . But since we are not German citizens, we cannot ask the German government to make decisions that entail significant costs for the German people. However, as economists we are certain that a European embargo on Russian oil and gas is the quickest way to stop Putin's war in Europe .
Such an embargo would be costly, but the cost is manageable. Leading German economists put the cost of an embargo at 0.5 to 3 percent of gross domestic product or around 120 to 1200 euros per capita, which corresponds to a moderately severe recession. However, the recession is likely to be less severe than during the corona pandemic , for example .
Nobel laureate Paul Krugman agrees that such costs would be affordable for Germany . Two other studies come to similar conclusions. The first estimates that stopping Russian energy imports would result in a loss of income in Europe of about 1 percent. Another study assumes that a complete decoupling of Russian gas would reduce economic output in the euro area by around two percent. An analysis by the Bruegel think tank in Brussels also comes to the conclusion that Europe can get by without Russian gas next winter .
The German government also has enough fiscal space to cushion the impact on German budgets - as it did during the corona recession. With winter almost over and households using less gas for heating, now is an ideal time to look for ways to quickly reduce gas consumption and store as much natural gas as possible for next winter.
Aren't the existing sanctions enough to stop Putin?
Since the war began, the West has shown great determination and imposed sweeping sanctions. The Russian economy has been hit hard. The ruble has lost 40 percent of its value. The Russian stock market has basically ceased to exist. Russian government bonds are trading at junk prices. The central bank has raised its inflation forecast to 20 percent and Western companies have pulled out of Russia in large numbers. Even the Russian currency reserves are subject to sanctions. This formally froze half of the $630 billion war chest, one of the most important pillars of the economic "Fortress Russia."
But huge sums of more than 500 million euros per day still flow into the country, mainly from Europe as payments for energy supplies. Oil and gas revenues are the most important source of the Russian budget. In 2021, with significantly lower oil prices, oil and gas taxes accounted for 40 percent of the budget.
The payments that Putin receives from the sale of Russian mineral resources are now and will be used to continue the war in Ukraine. It's true that Putin pays his military and police officers in rubles, not euros. But without the income from commodity exports, the Russian budget will slide massively into deficit. So Putin will either have to cut the salaries of soldiers and officers or print money
But printing money is dangerous. Inflation is already very high at two percent a week and the export embargo will accelerate it considerably. If Putin allows more rubles to be pumped into the system, inflation will continue to heat up.
In the event of an oil and gas embargo, falling foreign exchange earnings and accelerating inflation would undermine Putin's ability to maintain the purchasing power of police, bureaucrat and propagandist salaries. But these groups are the mainstays of his repressive regime at home.
Is an embargo pointless as Putin will sell gas and oil to China?
Half of Russian oil exports and three quarters of gas exports go to Europe. Full substitution by China and other countries is impossible given the limitations of transport infrastructure and the size of the European market.
More importantly, an embargo on Russia would reaffirm the West's determination and unity and create new options for action. If Europe stopped doing business with Russian oil and gas, it would be much easier for the United States, for example, to impose so-called secondary sanctions on countries that continue to trade with Russia.
Undeniably, an embargo will also hit ordinary Russians, whether they support Putin's war in Ukraine or not. In a non-democratic regime, the burden of sanctions aimed at Putin and his friends is at least partly borne by the general public, as was the case after 2014. But as long as Putin is in charge, he will use Russian tax revenues to bolster his repressive and propaganda machinery.
Putin wants to continue this war, which is economically devastating for both Ukraine and Russia and has already claimed thousands of lives. On March 16, he even said at a meeting that he was aiming for a "final solution" in Ukraine. It's hard to imagine what he means by that. The best way to stop Putin's war of aggression is to deprive him of the funds to continue this war by banning imports. Such an embargo would also have to last until Russia gives credible assurances that it will not undertake any further aggression in Ukraine or anywhere else.
If the embargo is not implemented quickly, the war in Ukraine, which is already causing high economic costs for Europe, will be prolonged. In addition, one must also consider the costs of a possible further escalation of the war if other countries become involved in the conflict. The embargo would deprive Putin of the financial means to continue the war and would massively weaken him domestically. Any other political option is economically more costly and politically more dangerous

Russian ministries and officials have repeatedly claimed that images from Bucha did not emerge until 4 days after Russian forces left the area, at the end of March, such as this statement from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
This is provably false, with videos shared from Bucha showing corpses along Yablunska Street from as early as the evening of April 1st, not 4 days later as Russian government sources claim. Here's the earliest example we identified:

It definitely won’t be anywhere near as capable. The experience of the UK armed forces have gained in our near constant military involvement since WW2 will be unmatched by most countries. The level of retained skills developed by our armed forces (and the US’s) will be at a totally different level to any of our European ally’s.
You can buy all the best kit you want but the knowledge of how to deploy and maintain it all as well as the support networks needed can’t just be learnt overnight.

Got questions about why I think it is genocide. Until this morning I resisted applying the term. War crimes? Sure. Heinous rhetoric? You bet. What changed is the combination of more and more evidence, from different places, and even more importantly, explicit official rhetoric
The official legal definition of genocide is "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such". When I teach genocide I start by saying that this definition has huge problems because it doesn't give us
clear thresholds (what "in part" does even mean?) and because it is almost impossible to prove intent. People who carry out genocide are usually not idiots, if there are orders at all they would be given orally.
But, several things are important to realize. First, something
that doesn't start as genocide might evolve into one when conditions change. Russian invasion, in my view, did not start with clear genocidal intent, but evolved into one. Regime change and colonial subjugation are by themselves not enough to constitute genocide. Second, more evidence that Bucha is not an exception. Each massacre might be local initiative, together they are a campaign. And most importantly, the RIA Novosti (a state outlet) piece is one of the most explicit statements of intent to destroy a national group as such that I've ever seen
I know Russian. I have read a lot of Russian nationalist rhetoric in my life. This is not some wild intellectual fantasy, it is a clear, actionable statement of intent by a state agency. The UN definition is problematic, but in this case it fits like a glove

Most twitter threads on Germany not stopping oil sales has people with different European flags saying, Germans always pick the wrong side of history ect. One way Germany can change that perception is backing Ukraine all the way and stopping the oil and gas

A thread on some #EU countries closing their borders:
#Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are planning to close their land borders with #Russia, thus cutting off the movement of goods across these borders
The effects of such a move will be far reaching, and will have a serious impact on the movement of goods to the #Russian exclave of #Kaliningrad, which is bordered on two sides by Lithuania and Poland
Kaliningrad is a region of significant strategic importance to Russia, as it hosts a number of military bases, naval installations and Iskander ballistic missile systems
Cutting off Russia's ability to supply Kaliningrad via land routes will surely add to the logistical nightmare Russia is facing a result of its aircraft being banned from EU airspace. This leaves Russia only one option for resupply: the sea
Resupplying Kaliningrad from the sea poses a major problem for the Russians: How do they ship goods to the region during winter, when their only other port on the baltic sea is frozen
In conclusion, I cant highlight enough that the closure of the Polish and Lithuanian borders with Kaliningrad is going have a significant effect on Russias operations in the region. If it last it will create logistical situation that is unsustainable, and hopefully force negotiatons

While I understand the urgent need to take action, Europe doesn't need a situation where extremist parties get any amount of power. I also understand why politicians will have to weigh up these decisions very carefully. Germany, at least, has just had elections but France needs to make sure it gets through theirs before passing the cost onto the population.
If it were down to me, I'd find a way to pass it onto to the rent-seeking sections of the private sector. The press would probably have us turn our backs on Ukraine before that happened.

Analysis of satellite images by the
@nytimes
visual investigations team shows bodies lay in Bucha for at least 3 weeks, when Russian forces controlled the area, refuting Russian claims the massacre was carried out by Ukrainian forces after their departure
To confirm when the bodies appeared, and when the victims were likely killed, the Visual Investigations team at The Times conducted a before-and-after analysis of satellite imagery. The images show dark objects of similar size to a human body appearing on Yablonska Street between March 9 and March 11. The objects appear in the precise positions in which the bodies were found after Ukrainian forces reclaimed Bucha, as the footage from April 2 shows. Further analysis shows that the objects remained in those position for over three weeks.
The causes of death are unclear. Some of the bodies were beside what appears to be an impact crater. Others were near abandoned cars. Three of the bodies lay beside bicycles. Some have their hands bound behind their backs with white cloth. The victims were scattered over more than half a mile of Yablonska Street.

Disagree.
It's not really drip-fed. Gushes out of the front pages.Drip fed on the front pages. Even if a person never buys those papers it's in the peripheral vision every day.
I had to explain to my kids why it's there and why it's allowed as once they noticed it as a daily thing they were taken aback.

Now that Russia has been forced back from Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy the international community should send in peace keeping and international aid agencies into those regions to help with the reconstruction efforts and allow the Ukrainian military to focus all its energy on eastern Ukraine. And we need to arm them to the teeth.

Definitely. Can say it's non confrontational as just policing the border and documenting war crimes. Frees up Ukraine as you say. The weapons need to come now not tomorrow, especially after Bucha. The more time they are on Ukranian land the more genocide can be committed. Stop all trade big and small also, we can have no part of this regime

Outstanding forensic visual journalism from NYT.
And I don't think one can overstate how big an impact the increase in availability of hi-res satellite imagery has on how conflict is now reported and understood
Of course, some people will still choose to disbelieve this evidence, but there will always be a fringe minority who indulge in wilful self-deception.
The difference is that 10 years ago, without these images, millions more may have been in the "we just can't be sure" camp

And Hitler at the start to divide up Poland. I think he's probably criticising the west for negotiations with Stalin as Poland got the brunt twice. After staying practically silent on the war for over a month, Merkel has rebuked Zelensky’s criticism of her by saying that she stands by her decision from 2008 to block Ukraine from NATO membership.
Experts claim the Russian invasion has clouded her legacy
Apart from the NATO decision, Merkel has also come under fire for not diversifying Germany’s energy supplies after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2014.
36% of Germany’s gas imports in 2014 came from Russia, but the rose to 55% by the time of Russia’s invasion in 2022

EU to ban import of coal from Russia, in what would be first energy import ban after Ukraine's invasion. It's worth little compared to oil or gas but of highly symbolic importance
Important to note: EU import ban on coal would be applicable immediately after publication on OJ. However wind-down periods for existing contracts still to be decided. That's devil in details that could make this measure less effective than it seems if very long wind-down agreed

The sickening scenes in Bucha are going to be the tip of the iceberg unfortunately. All wars fought over the last few decades have scenes like this. All wars have atrocities and rapes unfortunately. But they are usually done by an individual or done against soldiers. Also when things like Abu graibh prison was committed there were some although not enough prison sentences. The Russians are just denying it completely.
This is so shocking as it's the systematic slaughter of civilians. Srebrenica was the last time something like this was done in Europe

Zelensky tells UN Security Council that Russia committing worst war crimes since WW: "Women were raped and killed in front of their children" with "their tongues pulled out".
He said "this is no different from Daesh [ISIS]" but it is "done by a member of the UN Security Council
They killed entire families, adults and children and they tried to burn the bodies.”
He finishes by telling the UN that if it can do nothing about this it should just dissolve itself

i've thought this for few years now, Russia and China always veto more sanctions on Rocket Man, disband the organisation and start afresh only adding countries that don't constantly use threats

A thread on claimed Russian losses, and why the Ukrainian official claims might be far more accurate than people think
Its important to be skeptical of any government claiming losses inflicted on an enemy, historically such figures can be grossly inflated. One extreme example was the Japanese government in World War II, which claimed to basically wipe out the US Pacific fleet in every battle
Only for the pesky Pacific Fleet to keep being amazingly rebuilt in a few months and appearing closer to Japan each time. As such, Ive never used official Ukrainian claims on Russian losses during this war. Here is the most recent claims
These claims might seem very high--though for the first time we actually have a tool for comparison. Open source intelligence based on photographic evidence. We can thus have a baseline comparison between minimum Russian losses and Ukrainian claims
For tanks, which the open source intelligence has excellent evidence about, the difference between Ukrainian claims (676) and proven losses (425) is actually not that large considering that the OSINT figure is a base line.
There would be a large number of Russian losses not recorded--such as those not photographed (probably the large majority which were lost in territory under Russian ain the south and east), those which have been recovered by the Russians and those which have not yet been entered
For those behind Russian lines, we can now assume those to be a very large number. Since the Russians pulled back from Kyiv, the database has been updated with approximately 50 new entries. Yet the Kyiv front only contained approx 30% of Russian forces
If Russian forces in the south and east have suffered similar loss rates during the war, we can say that there would be something close to 115-120 undocumented destroyed Russian tanks behind Russian lines.
As for hit Russian tanks that they would be trying to recover, those damaged, etc, I have generally been using a rate of 25% of documented losses to put this figure in perspective. This is actually a very low rate (in WW2 there would be a much higher rate of damaged to destroyed
So I am being relatively cautious in estimating that there is another 25% of Russian tanks that would have been hit compared to those documented as destroyed. As of yesterday, that would have been an additional 111
So if we add up documented losses (425) with a reasonable expection of undocumented losses behind Russian lines (min 115) with damaged tanks that the Russians would be trying to salvage (111), you end up with 651 lost tanks
That is only a little below the Ukrainian total of 676. So the Ukrainian claim, in historical terms, seems pretty reasonable and they might very well have hit 676 Russian tanks during the war so far
Been asked what percentage of overall Russian tanks that would be. Its not straightforward. If all Russian BTGs had a full compliment going into the invasion, that would be 1200
