Le Monde (centre left paper) has given today's editorial to a Ukrainian politician who is absolutely slaying Macron. Right From the beginning, Frances policies have failed Ukraine. There should be an english translation tab on the site.
imagine if Le Pen had won recently :hmmm:anyway
However, the regular telephone talks between Mr Macronand Mr Putin reflect his desire to maintain a space for cooperation with Russia, which is contrary to the Atlanticist objective of isolating the Kremlin. Moreover, the dialogue maintained by Emmanuel Macron has not led to any positive results.
i suspect a few other states will welcome the 'making up' with Putin as soon as possible after this "peacekeeping" Genocide war ends, like one poster mentioned several pages ago i've had feelings for a few weeks now Putin is going to end up getting huge swathes of land back for Mother Russia.

I wouldn’t be so sure. Ukraine seem to be making progress in the south. Russia not been able to manoeuvre much at all recently.

It's weird the news 2 weeks ago was full of gloom as Russia had pushed about 10 miles west in the Donbas and surrounded 3 sides of severodonetsk. Ukraine has pushed a bigger distance in the south towards Kherson, if they take that they control the water for crimea. To be honest there is not many stories full stop the last weeks, it's a war of artillery now.

It looks western unity around Ukraine isn't quite as unified as has been made out on here at times. I have posted several times about UK supermarkets importing fuel of Russian origins, whatever route it takes to get here, who knows, but it's pretty damning.
There is division around a whole range of key issues, the sanctions, provision of heavy weaponry and the best way to end the conflict. There's a lot of conflicting interests and no end in sight. Still the war goes on.

NEW YORK, June 16 (Reuters) - Coca-Cola HBC AG (CCH.L) and its existing customers in Russia are "in the process of depleting stock," Coca-Cola Co (KO.N) said in a statement.
Once the company's stock is depleted, Coca-Cola HBC will "no longer produce or sell Coca-Cola or other brands of the Coca-Cola Company in Russia," Coca-Cola said.
Atlanta-based Coca-Cola owns about 23% of Switzerland-based Coca-Cola HBC, according to Refinitiv's Eikon. Coca-Cola HBC bottles and sells Coke beverages exclusively in its 29 markets, which includes Greece, Italy and countries in Eastern Europe, according to its website.

Probably the tens of thousands of soldiers committing genocide and trying to wipe the nation from the map. The have been asking for years to be a eu member but that was seen as inciting Russia.
It will be candidate status along with Georgia and Moldova. A big move towards security for these 3 nations, with the biggest chance of Russian invasion

Fair question, and there is already annoyance to say the least about this amongst certain Balkan states, but this is only a small step towards membership candidate status, one that still has to be approved (likely to be though): decades will pass before Ukraine is in a situation to join the EU as a member, it has to meet all the requirements and criteria.

I'd go further and say they have the right to hit Russia. Why should they have to fight with one arm tied behind their back? Putin started this war with large scale backing from the Russian people, Russian public opinion obviously won't change until they start paying a price too.

Putin claims Russia has weathered sanctions better than Europe
Remarks contrast with data from western institutions, which estimate blow to EU has been less severe
The OECD recently slashed its forecast for the eurozone’s expansion this year from the 4.3 per cent it had estimated in December to 2.6 per cent, and from 2.5 per cent to 1.6 per cent for 2023.
For Russia, the downgrades were much steeper. Its economy is expected to contract 10 per cent this year, according to the OECD, a downgrade from the 1.9 per cent of growth anticipated in December. The projection for 2023 was cut from 1.6 per cent*growth to a 4.1 per cent contraction.
Putin said that Russia had taken inflation under control at 17.6 per cent and boasted that it was below levels in some European countries. This is only true for Estonia and Lithuania, where energy prices have soared after the Baltics moved to cut off supplies of Russian energy once the war began. The eurozone average is, at 8.1 per cent, less than half the Russian rate

The infrastructure he has built round himself along with the degradation of all the old political structures makes removing him difficult. That’s not the same as him being powerful. His grip will be weakening in different parts of the country in different ways as people look for fixes to their problems that he can’t provide.
Despite what they would like people to believe, their economy is taking a bigger hit that any we have ever faced in the UK. And it may be the same again next year. Their inflation is double what ours is and their interest rates 5 times what ours is. And times are tough here, imagine how bad it is there.
Yes, oil and gas revenues are up but remember that they were always used to fund the state and that is going to need just about every penny of that to keep going. Not to mention all the skimming off the top that has to happen to keep things going.
Russia is in a terrible situation now. They have lost the war. Their army is at a standstill while suffering massive casualties daily. Forward movement is impossible. They can’t retreat because Putin would not survive a loss. And they face an enemy getting stronger and re-supplying quicker than they can.
At some point very soon Ukraine is going to make a move on Kherson. When that falls, all bets are off on how willing the Russians are able to hold back the advancing Ukrainians. They were not that able north of Kyiv.

Major power plant in Eastern Siberia is up in flames. Huge swathes of both the Buryat Republic and the city of Chita in yhe neighbouring region are completely without power.
Both Buryatia and Chita in particular are strong recruiting areas for the military and regiments from these areas have been responsible for some of the worst atrocities in the war.
Perhaps it's only a coincidence but a fresh round of sabotage attacks would be spot on.

No one said there was much pushing either way in anything I've read. For months they have been saying the ranged war of artillery would start and they were right. Minimul movement anywhere in a month can't see much in the next month. Russia has more weapons and ammo, UKR is getting better weapons

Amazed to see that the civilised nations, including us, are only now considering banning Russian gold exports, looks like we've continued to offer any Russian that can afford this method of wealth transfer an ongoing way around some sanctions?

I read some media stuff recently about Kaliningrad's population being Europe-facing (I know, I know, how much do we believe of what we're told?). Perhaps allowing imports across Lithuania is intended to cast the EU as the good player in the hope, based on intelligence we'll not be told about yet, that Kaliningrad revolts?
That's what I hope. It's probably as it seems though, a cautious de-escalation by the EU. I feel for Lithuania. I've been really impressed by their bravery, and a bit surprised by it. I might be wrong (it does happen from time to time :-) ) but I think I read that Lithuania was the main recipient of Russians when the USSR relocated citizens to undermine any lingering nationalism in the Baltic states. They've been admirably resolute.

Lithuania are doing everything they can to support Ukraine as they know they are next on the list. The older generation are acutely aware what Russia are capable of and fear the worst. The country has given the GTF to China and Russia in the last 12 months. This is at odds with how Lithuanians go about their business as they are extremely introverted and mildly patriotic.Says a lot how united they are to stop Putin’s nonsense

Yikes. Exiled U.S. conspiracy theorist John Dougan has apparently interviewed Aiden Aslin, the captured UK volunteer soldier now awaiting execution in the DNR. This footage of Aslin singing the Russian national anthem is chilling. Presumably he hopes this will keep him alive?
Crucial to realize that Paul Urey, another captured British volunteer (an aid worker, not a combatant like Aslin), has already died in captivity — due to “illness and stress,” says the DNR

Horrific.
I’m hoping that this recent spate of attacking cities is a sign of desperation from the Russians. The Ukrainians are inflicting heavy losses on them just now and their artillery fire is grinding to a halt as the Ukrainians keep hitting their ammo storage sites.
The intro of long range accurate missiles from the Americans have really changed the battlefield now.

Ukraine war: Zelensky fires security chief and top prosecutor - BBC News (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-62202078)
President Volodymyr Zelensky has fired the head of Ukraine's security agency (SBU) and the prosecutor general, citing many cases of treason in the two powerful organisations.
He said more than 60 former employees were now working against Ukraine in Russian-occupied areas.
A total of 651 collaboration and treason cases had been opened against law enforcement officials, he added.

By signing the agreement they can fool folk into believing they’re prepared to be reasonable, then continue to act like ***** in order to give them the best chance of achieving whatever their objectives are.
There are many reasons why the phrase “don’t negotiate with terrorists” exists.
The reason there is a grain crisis and food shortage is Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. They couldn’t care less about their own people, let alone starving Africans. Why does anyone think they’re going to be reasonable here?

Everyone working at, and associated with, the Kremlin has shown themselves to be completely untrustworthy every step of the way. Their words are meaningless. Russia has made it clear that the only way they can be removed is by force. With the training and weapons the Ukrainians are receiving it is only a matter of time before Ukraine takes back control of the south. As long as the weapons keep coming, Ukraine will eventually take back all of its land. There is no way the rest of the world can allow Russia to gain from this war in any way. Doing so would just be an invitation for Russia to do the same or worse again in the future.

Russia has told Turkey that it has "nothing to do" with the missile strike on the port of Odesa and is "carefully investigating" situation, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said after talks with Russia.

I wouldn't like to bet which way it will go.
Both sides have their weaknesses. It will probably come down to the appetite the West have to continue to support Ukraine and I don't think it's as unwavering as many would wish.
It'll likely end in a fudge which will allow Russia to regroup and continue their crusade through Europe at a later date, probably when they've got their political figures of choice in Downing Street and the White House.

I asked this many pages ago...
I think it's down to capacity and logistics - the Ukrainian ports are geared up for piling vast quantities of the stuff onto boats and taking it from there. Any other method of transport (rail, road) has issues of only being able to take so much at any time, rendering it hugely inefficient. Jacking prices up isn't an easy option as we're talking about much of being sold in vast quantities at low price to countries who aren't exactly awash with cash.

Distressing documentary about the plight of kids with disabilities in Ukraine on BBC and highlighted on the news. Simply harrowing to see young people and adults locked away in basic accommodation with just the area of a child’s cot to occupy - tied to the bed or their seats. Getting washed once a week and really only existing. Terribly terribly sad. In fact, just heartbreaking 💔
Documentary saying it’s like Romania when the regime fell and it’s one of the barriers for Ukraine in terms of being permitted to join the EU. The staff clearly were under huge stress but there seemed to be a severe lack of knowledge and understanding as they were saying you “can’t do anything for children like this” and it’s just the bad luck they’ve had. They’re being discovered as other agencies go in to help the war displaced population.
Expert was saying it is typical of the approach of the former Soviet block in the past but that Ukraine seems not to have had the will to prioritise improving things despite 30 years of independence from Moscow.

I will need to watch this, because my experience of the orphanage system is one of a government that actively changed the old soviet era orphanages to smaller “family type children homes” with very visible improvements both in the care provided and the effect on children and their behaviours. As I’ve not watched it yet I won’t comment too much, but certainly the level of care, professionalism and knowledge of care staff and the conditions of the orphanages was questionable at best.
I know from personal experience that children with disabilities and long term medical needs can find themselves abandoned by their parents (we have some in our Dnipro Kids group) so I don’t doubt that these places exist, I’m just sceptical about how widespread a problem it may be being made out to be.

It's not the media. War historians and military experts were mostly saying two months ago, don't look to much at severodonetsk getting taken as Russia will very soon lose the ability to attack and then UKR will advance from the south.
The media were getting excited saying Russia has changed tactics and are storming back. Russia is getting weaker every day, Ukraine is getting stronger. This can only go one way if they get the support. Germany and some others might be wishing for a stop soon. But as long as Americans back the war UKR should be ok

A report highlighting the ethnic breakdown of Russian casualties and where in Russia those casualties are likely to come from.
Muslims from the North Caucuses and Buddhists from the various republics in Central siberia disproportionately provide many of the deaths, many times that of slavic Russians.
The contrasting rates per 100,000 between poor ethnic regions and wealthier 'white' regions is startling.
Even in regions where Slavs make up the majority of the population the deaths from these regions containe far higher proportions of non Slavs in their figures.
The report is from a couple of months ago and the situation has only got worse since.
I wonder if for example there could be internal problems ahead for Putin if say Chechens turn and seek to overthrow Kadyrov.
If that happens then Russia could be plunged into anther Chechen war which could now spread to other regions. Basically Russia would be goosed.

• Imports have largely collapsed
• With many global companies gone, 🇷🇺 has lost firms representing 40% of GDP
• Car production’s down by 89%
• For fiber optic cables it dropped by almost 80%
ARE SANCTIONS WORKING? Yale says the 1K western companies that fled Russia comprised ~ 45% of RU GDP. Russian domestic production has come to a complete standstill, and its domestic financial markets are the worst performing in the world in 2022. Ouch.

I think last evening Serbia's General Staff officers explained to President Vučić that if he orders to attack Kosovo NATO fighter jets would appear over Serbian forces within hours and start bombing them... and within 48 hours the US Army's 173rd Airborne Brigade would be airlifted to Pristina Airport and the Italian Army's Paratropers Brigade "Folgore" airlifted to Gjakova Airport (which Italy's military built for this purpose).
Followed a day later by the Italian Army's Mechanized Brigade "Pinerolo", which is based in and around Bari, and would
be shipped by the Italian Navy's 3rd Naval Division with its amphibious ships from Brindisi to Durrës within 2 days. From Durrës to Mitrovicia the Pinerolo's wheeled Freccia IFVs and Centauro tank destroyers need 6 hours thanks to the Western co-financed A1 highway
In short: NATO has been planning and training to defend Kosovo for 23 years; if the Serb ever go all loco and invade NATO can overmatch them in the air within a few hours and on the ground within a few days.
And NATO made sure Serbia's generals know this... but Vučić is a 🤡

I'm really baffled by how little reporting there is on #Olenivka in Western news. In all likelihood, Russians locked dozens of Ukrainian POWs inside a building and then exploded an incendiary bomb inside. If confirmed, it is one of the worst war crimes of this century

One of the most disappointing things about the war is some on the lefts view. People I've admired are stuck in a bygone age of US vs Russia, both are empiricistic. They are stuck in their ways and too far gone to admit it.
I saw Tommy Sheridan shared something from rt saying the Ukrainian soldiers were bombed in the prison by HIMARS. The fact that its against the Geneva convention to keep them 10 miles from the front, they won't let the red cross in, you don't use a $400,000 rocket for something in artillery range, independent osint has shown it was thermobaric weapons.
Tommy used to share lots of bellingcat information when they were showing isreali war crimes, now must ignore them that they are exposing Russian genocide.
I noticed Tommy, the James connoly society, slaven and Bonnie Prince Bob all share loads of each others stuff recently. It's split between anti Ukraine and anti snp, mostly anti snp. Repeatedly going on about nu Scotland whatever that is. Sharing rt and daily mail articles is very weird look for the left

Don’t believe Vladimir Putin’s hype. The Russian economy is not OK. With western sanctions jeopardising up to 40 per cent of the country’s GDP, Putin’s assurances of an economic pivot to the East are a sham. Suppose two teams are playing against each other. And one of the teams bribes the ref to give them advantages. Let's call the teams Roma and Dundee United. At the end of the game Dundee United claim that the ref was biased against them. Roma, in return, claim that the ref was biased against them. Because both teams complained about the ref, this tells me that the ref was impartial.

IT BEGINS: A UK tabloid reports that highly placed Kremlin official has approached the West to help end the Ukraine invasion. Astonishing claims about the move were made in a report circulated to Western intelligence agencies

Absolutely correct on the banning of Russians from receiving EU and UK visa’s. Tories still allowing Russians to visit London and party as well as visit their banks etc.

I understand the emotive 'let's ban them all' argument.
This will be a hammer blow to Russians dissidents, anti war/Putin activists and to millions of mainly young Russians who are loosing all hope that their futures can be democratic, internationalist and peaceful.

They know what they need to do then. Their silence just now shows how much they care for those things.

Not true. We just don't understand what it's like to live in a country where speaking out can end your education or see you lose your job and be blacklisted overnight.
Where speaking out can see you fined huge sums.
Where speaking out can see you ostracised from your family or be subjected to unprovoked assaults by the local, neds/casuals types.
Its overwhelming for say a young student in a Commie housing scheme somewhere in the back of beyond Russia where the majority are spoon fed a narrative from their infancy to their graves by strictly controlled schooling and media to rise up and protest. The future direction of their lives change instantly.

Sounds like the last thing they need is a holiday visa?
It’s tourist visa’s that are up for debate.

Russians now feel trapped in an authoritarian state. This is the last thing they need.
Russian anti putin/war activists currently in Georgia are now terrified that visas will be revoked or not granted extensions due to the EU putting pressure on the Georgians.
Young youtube, social media vloggers now fear being returned home to almost certain imprisonment and probable torture.

They don't need to fear, it's only short term tourist visas. Academic and working visas will still be available if people want to escape, but 2 week holidays to Spain will be out. Its a war its a genocide, whatever it takes

Amazing how little it’s getting talked about here as well. Russian tourists streaming into London all summer.

I'd read yesterday that it was a journalist who had visited the HQ who posted a picture of the building which was subsequently geo-located. Suppose it just goes to show that there are claims galore hen it comes to this war.

The very existence of Navalny gives me hope for Russia, even if he may seem a million miles away from being able to exert proper influence.
Yet.
The fact that he does still exist, and is able to get work like this out from where he is and influence as many people as he surely does is deserving of huge respect though.

They are one and the same incident. He was the guy on the left of the infamous photo shown on state tv , with the street address in the background.
