More hypocrisy from supposed defenders of democracy and freedom of speech in the West.

The Labour Party currently denouncing freedom of speech in their own party. Quite an irony given their criticism on the lack of freedom of speech in Russia.


I'm not talking about specific historical events. I'm talking about history as a living, moving entity which nobody knows the course of. It can't be scientifically deduced, or split into 'sides'. Hindsight (and clairvoyance) are not history. Sure, Marxists or totalitarian regimes down the ages have adopted a mantra that humanity is on a single, unalterable course, but they have constantly been knocked off that course and frustrated. Even a more liberal belief in an ever-improving, universal humanity has been regularly thwarted. You just need to look at the retrogressive, often irrational movements which continue to sweep the globe today.

Which is why history will always be open to a change of view and in a state of flux.

In this country "history" shows Henry the 8th as a fat, jolly bloke who always had a chicken leg and got married six times. His life is obviously broader than that. I think of him as selfish, entitled, get who allowed his army to lay waste to Edinburgh and instructed them to rape as many women as they could throughout the City whereas someone like Richard Starkey would admire that ruthlessness or ignore that aspect.

They sent their demands to Ukraine today but it was basically a full surrender and it was sent back. They said publicly there was a ceasefire whilst Ukraine could look at it, but all the independent observers said this was nonsense and battle continued

People have prepared a lot of Molotov cocktails and ready to use them. I would say that quite a lot of people absolutely ready to die but kill at least one Russian - or hit the tank (it's better). 3 days since the Russians invaded. Their resupply lines will be stretched to the limit and without effective resupply their front line troops' morale, capability and effectiveness will wane. Time is on the side of the Ukrainians, the longer Russia fails to achieve its objectives, the less likely they are to do so. As an ex soldier I'm in absolute awe of the resistance that the Ukrainian military and civilian population have put up. I'm still in no doubt that the Russians will ultimately achieve their objectives, but the price they will pay for them is going to make Russians reconsider their choice of leader.

It's true that you can interpret history in many ways but it's not infinite, you have to provide evidence and argument to prove what your saying and eventually there would be some sort of consensus arrived at subject to any new evidence.

As to your last point I not quite sure where this existential recording of events exists. History exists in people's minds and is therefore subject to moralising.

They condemn the Russian invasion but at the same time there’s an undercurrent of justification with links from Russia Today and stories about Labour Party politicians being harassed for their views. I don’t care if idiots from the Labour Party are getting grief for blaming nato for what’s happening, it’s nothing compared to what the Ukrainians are going through.

The Ukrainians will have a good idea of where the Russians are thanks to NATO intelligence and will be able to anticipate the routes these convoys will take. This will enable them to set up prepared killing zones where they can ambush the Russians when they move and then disappear to the next prepared killing zone before the enemy can react. Convoys like the ones we're seeing in these videos will be easy prey for a well organised resistance.

I would have thought that a few days ago. Now I’m not so sure. It doesn’t sound like the Russians have prepared their troops at all for what they are going into and their logistics seem to be failing. Add to that the economic collapse in Russia itself and im beginning to get hopeful.
The freezing of their central bank assets is a bit of a game changer as it prevents them supporting the rouble. It will be worthless come Monday morning. Supermarkets are likely to close while they assess their prices. There could be massive internal trouble in Russia itself pretty quickly. And the troops themselves will be finding out that their wages are now worthless.

I don’t think anyone’s arguing that ‘history’ is some sort of god-like being that chooses what is right and wrong. The saying you take objection to is simply used to say certain individuals and groups will be remembered as having done wrong or made wrong decisions when people look back in history. Vladimir Putin will be one of those people. I don’t see how that’s even debatable or how you can use it as some way to have a dig at liberals or progressives.. but like I say, no point in arguing it any further.

As for not liking the phrase - I can’t really criticise given there are far too many phrases that irritate me for no logical reason!

That would be a terrible idea. Ukraine are absolutely smashing the PR war, not only in Ukraine and the west but also in Russia itself. Attacking Russia directly would damage that.

In the war on Chechnya, Putin bombed an apartment block in Moscow just so he could blame imaginary Chechen terrorists.

The European Union has announced that it intends to begin shipping arms to Ukraine, the first time in its history it has taken such a step.


Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the move marked a "watershed moment".


She also announced a raft of new sanctions targeting Russia and Belarus, and a ban on Russia using European airspace.

The firm has been under pressure over its nearly 20% holding - on Friday UK business secretary Kwasi Kwarteng is said to have told the oil company’s boss Bernard Looney about his "concern" over the involvement.

"Russia's attack on Ukraine is an act of aggression which is having tragic consequences across the region," BP chair Helge Lund said in a statement.

"BP has operated in Russia for over 30 years, working with brilliant Russian colleagues. However, this military action represents a fundamental change.

"It has led the BP board to conclude, after a thorough process, that our involvement with Rosneft, a state-owned enterprise, simply cannot continue."

Yep. I also think that’s why Putin has armed his nuclear defences or whatever words to that effect the Kremlin used, just to make their bargaining power as strong as possible for these negotiations.

Ukraine's military has just given an update on Sunday's fighting.

Writing on Facebook, the general staff of Ukraine's armed forces described Sunday as "a difficult time" for the military, saying Russian troops "continue shelling in almost all directions".

Latest reports suggest Russian troops have taken Berdyansk, a southern port, but earlier Ukraine said it had fought back an attack on the country's second biggest city, Kharkiv.

Worrying times in Dnipro. Today there were 4 air raid warnings in the city, although thankfully the expected missile attacks never materialised.

The image below shows the probable positions of Russian advancements, and their vicinity to Dnipro.

They are very close to surrounding Zaporozhia, and if it falls then Dnipro will be the next target. Dnipro will be heavily defended, as it is a military staging post for manoeuvres on the front lines .. but that will also make it a target and like Kyiv and Kharkiv could encounter heavy fighting around the outskirts (where a few of our orphanages are situated).

There are good few miles of streets in Kyiv for the Russians to get to the centre even if they manage to breach the perimeter.
Those anti tank NLAW that we provided only cost £20k each. I think it might not be easy to get through Kyiv.

Whenever that question arises, the ‘no he wouldn’t/couldn’t’ conclusion seems to apply. That BBC article casts quite strong insight to his mindset and strong possibility that he ‘can and would’. He is capable of adopting anti Christ status.

His people have to be convinced that they and their families face obliteration if he goes ahead. Is that what they want?

I think sensible heads in the West will now be thinking about ways to allow Russia to withdraw from this with some semblance of security; financial, economic, strategic. The last thing you want when dealing with a nuclear power on their version of defcon5 is economic collapse and having nothing left to lose.
