That's a worry. If a "Blitz" type mentality evolves in Russia, then whoever follows Putin will also have to be an anti-west hardliner.

Exactly this. Sometimes it seems like uniting against a common enemy in war time (‘othering’)is a uniquely Brit phenomenon. It isn’t.
The older generation of Russians still yearn for the power that they had prior to Gorbachev. I have no idea of the figures but I bet the country’s views on this issue are split by age.

Disgusting behaviour from Russia. There already are secret labour camps in the far east of Russia which North Korea had been sending prisoners to in return for money/food aid where those encamped would do backbreaking menial work and housed in wooden barracks. It never made the news and even Russians in those areas didn't know these camps existed but I watched a report where an American journalist managed to get right to the perimeter of a camp.

I think that's far too simplistic a view to be honest. We are talking about a country with a population of 120 million and spread over an area bigger than the entire EU.
There will be Russians who live fairly nomadic lifestyles outside the main cities, their access to fair and impartial information will be extremely limited at best in some cases. I just don't see the need to wish hardship on other fellow human beings who have done nothing wrong themselves.

"Kyiv Calling" a remake of the Clash's "London Calling"
https://youtu.be/xWQUkRKqp2E
Sent from my SM-A505FN using Tapatalk
Billy Bragg on this today…
Yesterday evening I posted a clip of the Ukranian band Beton performing their rewrite of 'London Calling'. According to reports, the song 'Kyiv Calling' was approved by the Clash, with funds raised going to the Free Ukraine Resistance Movement.
After a few hours of discussing the lyrics of the song and whether Joe Strummer would approve of the rewrite, a number of people drew my attention to a series of photographs on the band's Facebook page showing members of the band wearing t-shirts based on the Ramones circular logo.
The word 'Ramones' at the top of the logo had been replaced with the word 'Banderas' and although all of the names within the circle were not visible, the one that was clearly read 'Stepan'. The photos dated from a year ago.
This is deeply troubling. Stepan Bandera was a far-right Ukranian politician who collaborated with the Nazis during the occupation of Ukraine and whose followers were complicit in the Holocaust. That he did these things in the name of Ukranian independence from the Soviet Union has led some present day far right nationalists to adopt his image in their decade long struggle with Russia.
The knock on effect of this has been to allow Putin to smear all those who want a democratic Ukraine free from Russian influence as neo-nazis. The lionisation of Bandera explains his attempt to legitimize the invasion as a campaign of 'denazification', despite the fact that when, during the 2019 Ukrainian elections, all of the major far right Ukrainian parties formed a unified party for the national election, they gained just 2.15% of the vote and failed to secure a single seat in the national parliament. Compare that with the 2009 EU parliament election, where the BNP won 6% of the vote.
I left a message on the band's Facebook page asking them to explain why they were wearing t-shirts that appeared to support Bandera, but after 24 hours, I've had no response, so I've deleted my post.
We can argue about the meaning of 'London Calling' and what Joe Strummer would or wouldn't have said about the lyrical changes, but we can be damn sure that he would not have allowed his song to be utilised by a band that expressed their support for fascists.

When you shine a spotlight on most things you'll find mud. I don't think Ukraine can be too picky about where their finacial or military support comes from at the moment. If there are Ukrainian fascists out there killing Russian fascists, I'm not sure I can shed many tears for either.

Azov has been done to death a Batallion of 800 brought in after crimea when the country thought it was going to be conquered. You said they didn't ever expect an invasion so I added a two articles showing how much they were expecting this day. Training 400,000 troops and making defensive strategies and positions along the border. As one thread said, anyone with an IQ above the room knew this day would come.
When you're kids are being slaughtered, homes and countries destroyed you use every man. As I said before they have released all prisoners with military experience, do you think they are pro criminal or saving their peoples lives. If they don't deal with it when they aren't in a wartime situation there is discussions to be had. When their kids and country is being annihilated its crass and from a privileged position.

It’s not a privileged position to be able to discuss issues that are uncomfortable. That’s a basic human right.
Your position seems to be ‘Russia is bombing Ukraine, so discussing anything that isn’t showing Ukrainians in a 100% positive light is off the agenda’. Sorry but unless the mods on here see different I’ll continue to pull you up when what you’re saying doesn’t make sense.
I think I’ve already shown all the positions you’ve dredged up in your first paragraph to be logical fallacies that don’t stand up to scrutiny , I’m not doing it again. Just repeating yourself endlessly doesn’t make you right, even on the internet.

I bet there were thousands of racists in the uk army that helped defeat Hitler, I also don't care. Horrors happen on both sides of war. The genocide is only happening from one side just now. In my view they should never have been made a part of the Ukranian National Guard but I can see both sides of the argument. Certainly there's a massive part of me that says that you should never legitimise neo-nazi groups by incorporating them into the army and the fact that Ukraine did this has certainly given the opportunity to Russia to use this as part of the effort to legitimise their invasion (although they would have found other ways if this hadn't happened).
The other side of it is, as you say, when you are trying to defend against people who are destroying your homes and killing your families then you sometimes have to accept that the guy standing next to you has views you find repugnant but you fight together for a common goal. The Ukranian forces were not in a good situation when Russia started destabilising the Donbas region and annexed Crimea. I can understand when they were worried about what was going to happen and needed a quick fix to provide sufficient armed response to the rebels that they accepted whoever volunteered no matter their beliefs.
Just to engage in whataboutery for a moment though, if Russia's aim is to denazify Ukraine, then perhaps they shouldn't be arming and training rebel groups in Donbas which also include Neo-nazi groups such as the Sparta Battalion and accepts fighters from Neo-nazi organisations in Russia such as Russian National Unity.

Current sanctions against RU and Putins allies not as tough as they could be according to this MP. Sanctions against Iran currently stronger.

I cannot begin to tell you how big a thing this loss is for Rurrian forces.
Ukraine now has a whole lot of political leverage to get MIG-29's and SAM's from NATO, whatever the De-escalation factions in DC wants.
The DoD, CIA and NSA have collective boners the size of a Trident submarine thinking about getting their hands on this bit of Russian kit
It is a piece of equipment that transmits radio energy into NATO & US flying radar command posts antenna's to prevent those command posts from directing NATO/US fighters to control a piece of sky.
Having it tells Western powers a great deal about what Russia knows about
those command post radar planes.
If Ukraine trades for it, the captive gear also lets the US/NATO do live testing to develop tactics and technology to negate any advantage Russia hoped to get from the system
Short form: Easy air superiority vs Russia for the next 10 years

Look at yourselves just now giving this denazification anything. Just as mad vlad would’ve liked. You can’t get your blinkers off, but that seems a bit common the now.

Turning away from the spring statement for a moment, the Financial Times today prints a damning letter (https://www.ft.com/content/857d2ccd-2853-43ba-b6b9-88e04b42ba93)from Carl Scott, a retired air commodore and the UK’s defence attaché in Moscow between 2011 and 2016, saying the government was repeatedly warned about Vladimir Putin’s military intentions - but that those warnings were ignored by a government influenced by Russian wealth.
Scott says:
I served as the UK’s defence attaché in Moscow for five years, 2011-2016, during which time this long, dark march to war was obvious, the path to conflict lit by the many pronouncements emanating from the dark red walls of Vladimir Putin’s palace.
We reported the inevitability of conflict in detail, regularly and with the despair of Cassandra. One of the earliest reports opened with a line from Sherlock Holmes, whose statue stands outside the British Embassy wall: “There’s an east wind coming all the same, such a wind as never blew on England yet. It will be cold and bitter, Watson, and a good many of us may wither before its blast.”
The evidence of Putin’s chosen path was never concealed. His many declarations were meant to be heard and understood: the colossal rearmament programme, the demand for more complex, more lethal weaponry; the militarisation of society; the distortion and seizure of the popular narrative; domination of education, the media and the courts to exclude contrasting views and, ultimately, the alienation and destruction of those among the Russian people who understood the folly of his declared ambition.
Scott says on his return to the UK he realised “all was subjugated to the City, all served the interests of our lucrative status as a safe haven for corrupt, and corrupting, wealth”. He concludes his letter.
I despair at the decisions Putin has taken, but even more at the prospect of finding credible leadership at home in the UK among those who have compromised so long with his regime and the wealth it offered.

I think it was obvious to the Ukrainians fighting. But the European and British leaders deliberately didn't want to know, money first as per as you can see with dropping Russia for Saudi Arabia with their morals.
Russias army is a shambles but it could have succeeded in taking Ukrainian in those first days of the war. If it did and installed a puppet. We would have written a strongly worded letter of disapproval, then kept trading with Russia and the new government. No one would have put boots on the ground to change anything, I think Ukraine was very fortunate, obviously through bravery organisation ect

Putin has ordered to make Europe pay for gas in rubles – potentially a big boost to the currency.

Not sure what difference that makes? Surely even if the pay in dollars he can then transfer it into roubles himself to prop up currency?

I think it was obvious to the Ukrainians fighting. But the European and British leaders deliberately didn't want to know, money first as per as you can see with dropping Russia for Saudi Arabia with their morals.
Russias army is a shambles but it could have succeeded in taking Ukrainian in those first days of the war. If it did and installed a puppet. We would have written a strongly worded letter of disapproval, then kept trading with Russia and the new government. No one would have put boots on the ground to change anything, I think Ukraine was very fortunate, obviously through bravery organisation ect
:agree: I think 'didn't want to know' is exactly what was happening. Add in the US, and four years of a president who pretty much encouraged him.

A report a few days ago was from supposedly the last two journalists in Mariupol. They were evacuated by Ukrainian special forces out. They were the ones who broke the pictures of the hospital bombing and hence the Russians wanted them on camera saying it was lies.
I think it's a media blackout now as even the journalists could only pick up satellite phone connection in a few places in the city.

I can see where the OP is coming from.
I doubt there was much medical stuff for civilians bought or sold during the 2 world wars between the nazis and the allies. The same for the wars since.
I suppose it depends on how one sees this conflict. Is it merely between Ukraine and Russia or, as Russia itself has suggested because of global sanctions, a war between Russia and pretty much ROW?

Ok in retrospect, I agree my comments are over emotionally-charged, OTT responses to the horrors of what the Russians are doing to the fabric of Ukraine and it’s people but I fail to see how sanctions,
which at worst will seriously lessen the quality of Russian life, will have any effect on the madman’s evil crusade. I think the only solution can come from within Russia itself but what the hell will spur them to open their eyes to the truth.

In just 22 days, 1,100 missiles struck #Ukrainian cities, which is 11 times more missiles than hit #Syria in five years
…a very good article about how Syria was the tactical blueprint

There's a stench of Russian influence and an uncomfortable proximity to what is essentially a murderous dictatorial regime running right through the upper echelons of our government, a slowness to react and a readiness to justify this sort of position, technically legal or not.

Russian state TV posts this absolutely apocalyptic aerial footage of Mariupol (result of Russian siege). But the anchor says: “Sad scenes of course... the Ukrainian nationalists withdraw trying not to leave a stone unturnedWow, I never even knew Comical Ali had a sister who works in the Russian propaganda channel.

Russia has very possibly suffered *1/4* of its entire professional combat servicemen corps as casualties in a month of war in Ukraine. (75% of total BTGs committed, 1/3 of that as casualties)

(75% of total BTGs committed, 1/3 of that as casualties)Sounds like Putin has been duped into this. People close to him too scared to say no but knowing their forces aren't up to much. Truth hurts. There was a story last week about money spent on paying civilians "sympathetic to Russia" to take to the streets waving Russian flags after the invasion first happened. If his Blitzkrieg had worked and the army had taken Kyiv the optics/morale of that would have worked against the Ukrainian people. Seemingly the money went to the secret services to spread cash and pull people toward supporting Putin. The secret services reported it was all lined up but there was no sign of anyone greeting the Russians with anything other than hostility.
The suspicion is the secret services just pocketed the cash. That type of bureaucratic sticky fingeredness has been rife in that part of the world for hundreds of years - tsars, USSR, so it's just more than likely under a mafioso/oligarchy high on steriods amd botox.

Thing is, Putin's whole house of cards is built on corruption so it only follows that every single institution, including the military and intelligence services, are corrupt too.
The US and UK intel has been spot on. There will be plenty Russian top brass passing info west in exchange for cash, immunity or whatever else.

Biden stating NATO 'will respond' if Russia uses nuclear weapons against Ukraine.
What does this actually mean? A response in kind?

It's a warning that we aren't going to stand back, just like when he said it about chemical weapons. Chemicals weapons could have happened but nukes won't. Its just laying down rules to Putin and posturing
