I read somewhere that they start to freeze on average around December until March but I'll bow to your superior knowledge of the region Stevie. I studied Arctic Warfare in my time in the military and I can't remember the actual thickness ice needed to be for different vehicles to cross, but I remember it being surprisingly thin depending on the type of ice. I'll have to dig out my old manuals.
No superior knowledge here mate 😁
I would say say I’ve been about 6 or 7 times in January, and a couple of those times it wasn’t frozen solid. Kherson is also closer to Black Sea so I would have thought that would mean less chance of freezing over, compared to Dnipro.
That’s not to say it won’t, and if it aids the ЗСУ I hope it does.

The Russian missile screw-up that ended up killing two Poles will result in NATO invoking article 4 not article 5 (see below). The consultation will probably result in more support for Ukraine, particularly air and anti-air power. Will give Poland some real influence

If, as Biden is claiming, the missiles were actually fired by Ukrainian forces I'm guessing the fact they had Russian markings means they were captured weaponry. Either that or they really were fired by Russia and Biden is fudging things to avoid having to retaliate?

I'd like to think that NATO will have very robust protocols and will have planned and carried out exercises for a number of potential scenarios, minimising the chances of anything rash happening and ensuring that cool thinking always prevails.
We still shouldn't underestimate the seriousness or the general crapness that goes with Russia lobbing missiles about, what it might lead to in future in addition to what has already happened and is currently happening.

Prison culture is crazy in Russia, you can separate the regular gopnics (neds/lowlife ect) from gopniks that have served time. They stand and sit in certain positions that only ex cons are permitted to do so, they have their own language, sayings and phrases.

IMO the problem with this is that he's doubling down more than he needs to on hìs initial premise, basically to save academic face. NATO contributed significantly, and i would argue did more than anyone else to set the circustances for the conflict, but that doesn't absolve Putin or detract from his motives. Putins imperialism caused this war. It has become clearer as the months went on. He literally has no interest that Finland that shares a border with them joined NATO, so much so that he removed most border guards to send to Ukraine.
Russian insides said Zelenskys offers in January to never join nato were basically laughed at in the Kremlin.
The plans found from defeated soldiers showed taking Ukraine in 6 days and then moving to Moldova.

Putin's attacks on civilians likely only help to further strengthen the resolve of the Ukrainian troops and the Ukrainian people. They are determined to show that they will not be bullied into submission through the use of such cowardly tactics.

@PhillipsPOBrien
Here is a picture of the European Parliament's
@Europarl_EN vote saying that Russia is a state sponsor of terrorism. Whats maybe most interesting, is that the opposition to the vote comes mostly from far left and far right (the red bulbs). Far Left and Right are converging
The far left and right have been funded by Putin for years. It's worked a treat in the US and UK with the centre right shifting to the right to regain votes and destabilising both democracies.

I never said they didn't view it negatively of course they did. But this is a war of expansion. Putin compared himself to Peter the great in May and says the fall of the Soviet Union was the worst moment of the 21st century. Putin has said many things that are not to believed obviously, like it's a training exercise we will not invade
Pre war Zelensky put to russia that he was happy to sign a decree to stay neutral and never join nato, it was obviously dismissed.
Russia has shown how worried it is about nato attacking it, by removing almost all border guards and air defenses along nato borders and sending them into Ukraine
He's pretty much said he doesn't care that Finland their biggest land border is joining nato, as it isn't part of his dream.

Russia is a small basket case of a country that does not have a veto on any country joining NATO. Within the next ten years Ukraine will also join NATO and Russia will have to learn to live with it.
Russia has nuclear weapons and that’s it. And they are already leveraging the power that gives them to the maximum. There is nowhere higher that their nuclear blackmail will be tolerated.
They are now isolated within the international community. Their oil and gas exports are diminishing every month. I think it’s unlikely they make it through 2023 without some sort of revolution. What happens after that will need watching but that’s all we can do. There will be no more concessions to them.

Amazing article by rusi some of it already known, but a lot of details of the Russians plans for Ukraine in January.
https://mobile.twitter.com/charliekreuz/status/1598256313565609988
Russia planned to “subjugate” Ukraine in ten days and control it by summer as part of plans drawn up by a small group of officials led by Vladimir Putin. That’s according to a new report by Britain’s RUSI, an institute linked to Britain’s army, drawing on captured Russian orders.
Putin wrote his famous essay (asserting that Ukrainians and Russians were one people) in July 2021. That same month, the report says, the FSB was tasked with surveying Ukrainians. The result of their work seems to have been shaped by confirmation bias.
Russia’s army leadership said (and believed) it had achieved parity with the US due to military reforms. It devised a blitzkrieg plan, according to which several forces would seize different areas of Left Bank Ukraine. Only the Southern Military Command appeared to achieve goals
Russian counterintelligence had been drawing up lists of Ukrainians:
- Those who were to be liquidated
-Those to be suppressed
- Those who could be induced to collaborate
-Collaborators
It considered most Ukrainians docile, to be controlled with electricity and heating
The crushing of Ukrainian resistance was to culminate in monstrous show trials and executions of those involved in the Maidan Revolution
Meanwhile, Europe was to be kept inactive through targeted “blackmail” involving nuclear power plants.
The Russian plan did not assume any degree of Ukrainian agency. It was not subject to critical scrutiny and success was believed to be assured
The report obviously was shaped by Ukrainian sources. It says that the initial Russian plan failed due to hubris and delusion. But it also seems that elements of it are being used in the occupied territories (eg. the Zaporizhzhya plant

There was drone footage showing a Russian trench.
You could see one Russian soldier running and checking on his colleagues in the morning, they had all died, presumably from hypothermia.
They are bing forced to live outdoors in near freezing conditions with no tents, clothing, boots or food. They can't possibly survive these conditions.
Also some makeshift 'tents' - clingfilm wrapped around trees. Grim stuff.

Maybe it's time Ukraine started taking the war to Russia and started destroying their infrastructure. As long as the war is restricted to Ukrainian territory then it's easy for Russians to support the Kremlin.

The only problem is nato nations forbidden using nato weapons in Russia. It seems daft that Russia can have bases and storage safe from HIMARS attacks, just over the border

My concern when I hear words like “contract” is that after the war Ukraine is in so much debt to its Western “allies” that the rebuilding of Ukraine and the economy are so tied down that it takes decades before the majority of Ukraines are able to return to the levels they were at before the war.
At one point I was travelling to Ukraine and getting just over 8 grievna to the £, it’s now at 45 grievna!!

I think I read that the UK/US/EU are trying to seize Russia’s assets held abroad to be used to help rebuild UKR.
Russian should also be made to pay for as long as it takes. If UK and other country’s arms’ sectors benefit, that seems reasonable.
There will also be massive aid provided by the Western allies for years afterwards!

There is no doubt the Ukrainian economy is destroyed unfortunately. The infrastructure damage will be in the massive amount of billions. There is only one nation to blame for that and I hope they pay.
There is fortunately massive amounts of free aid being given. But also lots of aid will be a debt. I'm sure the Ukrainians are happy to have this also rather than the consequences of not having it. I'm hopeful Ukraine will get good support post war. It'll certainly be better than somewhere like allepo which is basically still rubble

Just thinking that if Putin is telling Belarus to invade from the North, and they refuse, he could easily send troops in there and effectively take control.
Lukashenko would probably do a runner at the first sign of trouble leaving the way clear.

Belarusian army would get slaughtered if they went into Ukraine and it would leave lukashenko vulnerable with no army.
He'll do and has done all he can to not send his army, although if forced he'll have no choice.

What a snivelling wee lapdog. My question came from me thinking what the implications would be of us taking some sort of action against him. I suppose it would just precipitate an anti-nazi invasion by Russia so wouldn't get us far.

That’s great news. Patriot is a game changer. Long range air defence. Sweep the skies of Russian Aircraft and more importantly, missiles and long range UAS.
Get the country’s electricity, infrastructure and war production back to full capacity.
I cannot stress enough the needs for industrial production to be stepped up in the West.

^^ At the same, UKR are developing drones that can reach up to 1000 into Russia, meaning they can strike more airbases to prevent the drones attacks on themselves.
It also means Russia needs to move its airforce even further back from the border.

When videos and photos emerged in April showing bodies of dozens of civilians strewn along a street in Bucha, Ukrainians and the rest of the world voiced horror and outrage. But in Russia, officials had a completely different reaction: denial.

Normal gas prices are at around 50p/therm (they’ve been as low a 13p/therm in the past 5 years.
The levels in the months before the invasion were high due to the post Covid demand surge and growing disquiet in Ukraine.
No predictions show a meaningful fall in natural gas prices in the next 2 years.
Sadly Russia will continue to benefit.

As lex says. The wholesale gas prices and futures prices are a fraction of what they were in the summer, about what they were pre war. Unfortunately we pay our bills on what they expected the price to be. Its all a big scam to be honest and it's us that suffer for it
Prices are back to roughly as low as they have been since early 21. Pre covid, pre war has no bearing on reality now. Fact is prices are less than a third of what they were in the summer. A massive massive fall

Yep. Aware of the difference between wholesale gas prices and what we pay. Also understand the short and long term buying strategies.
I’m just saying that Natural Gas is selling high and the predictions are for it to remain so in both short and long term.
Comparing wholesale price now to that just before the invasion is flawed as the price at that time was at an inflated level post covid.
That logjam is being diminished but the Ukraine disaster keeps gas prices well above where they would / should ordinarily be and that is to Russias advantage.
Naturally we all want Ukraine to win, but we are in danger of telling ourselves what we want to hear. Again that’s probably natural.

It is but real victory will require the Russian establishment to be destroyed and I'm not sure how achievable that will be. Military defeat would surely, you'd think, mean the end for Putin but will it prompt a meaningful introspection in the Russian population? Will they resist the replacement of Putin by whoever the next gangsters in line are?
I worry that won't happen or at the very least there will remain powerful super nationalist elements nursing a grudge. Germany post WW1, rather than post WW2 then.
There is no question at all that we must do all we can to ensure Russia loses in Ukraine. How we stop them dreaming some other atrocity up is possibly more difficult.

I doubt there is any chance of a democracy springing up. The Russian people are incapable of making it happen. Best we can hope for is another dictator happy enough with stealing all the wealth of the Russian oil and gas fields but who isn’t interested in any cross border adventures.

Look at the ural price not the world price. Its back to pretty much the average over the last 10 years. The US and Kazakhstan selling at a premium doesn't help Russia thanks to the price cap. Also pretty much all European countries have found other routes of getting gas. This will hammer Russia for the next 10 years.
Regardless oil and gas isn't saving Russia they have just lost 20 years of gdp growth and it won't end there.
As for what happens to Russia next I'm not that fussy as long as they are out Ukraine. Scandinavia and Ukraine will be in the EU and at least a pact with nato. Ukraines weapons have gone from Soviet to modern and with one of the best air defenses in Europe. Russia had its chance to take Ukraine, it won't be able to in future

I think Russia as we know it will cease to exist and will be replaced by several new countries or blocs made up from individual regions.
They're nothing now. A third world country living in the past. UKR, Germany and Poland will be the new powers in Europe and there's nowt Russia can do about it.
To the East, Japan are re-arming on a colossal scale. The isn't just for defence, they'll soon be taking back their claimed lands.
And China aren't Russia's friends. They're just opportunistic thugs looking out for themselves. Although it looks like they've realised they took the wrong side and are making early moves to cozy back with the US again.
So that leaves Russia as pals with N Korea. Good luck with that.

Like some sick advent calendar where every window opened sees an oligarch fall out...
A military expert was on LBC the other night saying he expects that Russia will receive ballistic missles from N Korea and Iran, Ukraine won't get the Patriot defence system for another couple of months so the bombardment of the cities will continue.
He thinks Ukraine will keep pushing and Russia to bunker down during the winter, mentioned a area that if Ukraine can breakthrough it would force the Russians to retreat 40 miles to their previous defensive line

As one of the articles says they are going on the fact that it's the same tactics as chechnya and a decade in Ukraine, almost a year of this war. The could have wholesale changes in their military but it isn't happening just yet and would take years. Almost 10,000 poor souls thrown at taking Bakhmut a pretty insignificant town, shows this
I'm pretty certain Ukraine can win, but unsure if they get told to leave crimea.

Not been on this site for a while, but, outrageous stuff from F.Russia . Trying now to use " hristianity" to justify their terror . However, I have been collecting as much winter clothing,batteries/ torches etc etc and taking them to a dispatch point just out of Edin. and will continue to do so for as long as needed. I worked down the pit with some great auld " Ukes" many years ago, hence my empathy of their children's situation. PM me if u have stuff! Slava Ukraini !

So the Orthodox Church in Russia have been placated by a temporary ceasefire so they can carry on with their religious celebration.... but their Christianity doesn't extend to condemning the murder of innocent people in the Ukraine?
Is it any wonder I have a deep disdain for organized religions and their total hypocrisy?

Pretty sure that’s the purpose of it because the German tanks is what is really needed. They are much better suited to Ukrainian needs.
UK tanks are as much symbolic given the logistic it will need to run just 12 tanks.

Nothing really unfortunately, about 250 have been used so far. The US say Russia has used about 70% of their stocks so far i think. They assume they won't use many more as they need them for their nuclear arsenal. The can build about 2 a month also, but were using much more than this, particularly at the beginning

Biggest defence against them is that Russia don’t have that many or the means to produce lots. It’s a very inefficient use of that weapon.
Using that weapon there probably points to deeper problems in the supply of other cheaper missile in Russia.

I don't think he'll be ousted, but do think he'll be defeated in Ukraine. His stocks are dwindling constantly whilst Ukraine is getting stronger, its inevitable.
I don't think the generals care to much about the deaths as its prisoners and minorities. If they have to have a mobilisation from the young of Moscow and St petersberg then there will be anger.
Unfortunately if I was betting I'd say there will be another 100,000 dead Russians before summer, its depressing

An important moment in European support for Ukraine. The Talinn pledge just released by the UK, Baltics, Poland, Netherlands, Slovakia, Czech and Denmark. Full text here
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/joint-statement-the-tallinn-pledge
Starts with a pledge to equip Ukraine with what is needed to drive Russia out of all Ukrainian territory. No qualification, so includes Crimea. Want to hand over equipment to improve Ukrainian capabilities--including the ability to attack Russian logistics and command/control
Then goes on to say they will give Ukraine basically everything they can (except for aircraft). Then throws down the gauntlet to other European states before the Ramstein meeting tommorow.
Followed be a detailed list of what they will deliver. Basically the clearest statement possible that Ukrainian victory is now to be achieved, and that its better to send what they can to Ukraine that hold on to it themselves. Puts real pressure on other states at Ramstein
