How does this end?
Will Putin accept defeat?
Does it last for years?
Or the unthinkable...
I think it ends in a coup. Probably after a collapse in Russian army.

Azerbaijan taking advantage of the fact Russia is in no position to intervene this time and has gone to war with Armenia again.
The knock on effects over the next couple of years will be huge. Georgia, Moldova, maybe Belarus could all be next.

Georgia and Moldova just taking back some of their own territory no?
Russkies moved into Georgia and declared “independence” in some areas and back the Transnistrian State in Moldova.

Don't think they had the time they were being outflanked. Usually the offensive would slow once the attacker got to far from the line, as would run out of logistics. But Russia has left so much equipment, fuel, trucks and trains that Ukraine is using it and pushing forward

Romania would help Moldova if needed. Romania is a noto country also so adds a dimension. Romania also has modern equipment like HIMARS and f16s that would rout Russia.
Azerbaijan is only striking because it knows Russia can't do anything. Worth looking at Georgia and chechnya.

Do the Transnistrians (Pridnostrovians) not have a right to self determination?
Or is it just the Catalan route that Moldova have to go down?
They have been de facto independent since the USSR fell.
It’s all moot, because what will happen, will happen.

A better example would be comparing Russia to Israel here, conquerers . The majority of them are ethnic Moldovan and Ukrainian. But of course if they need fair open elections which they have never had before. If they wanted to stay separate they should, but it's unlikely

Thanks for all the links on here. I have stayed away from watching too much footage of the war as it is too upsetting. I have started to pay more attention now as it looks like there will be as good an outcome as could be wished for. I'd be pretty much be unaware of the war looking at the BBC iPlayer.
The news I get presented with is a news special that isn't news ie people opinions of what the Queen was. I then get a choice of 24 pieces of programming with the first 21 exclusively Royal, the next the PM paying tribute to the Queen, the next a recorded News Broadcast( first 24 mins Royal, 7 minutes on Ukraine, Economy and death of French Film maker and the last part all Royal too with even the weather giving a mention to the Royals.) and the very last an interview with Zelensky from April.
I get the Royals are a big story but the war in Ukraine is surely the biggest story and given the way it interlinks with the cost of Living Crisis it is the one that we should all be hearing about.
Hard not to feel amazing admiration for Ukrainians and the way they have defended their country.

Putin's chief envoy on 🇺🇦told him as the war began that he had struck a provisional deal with Kyiv that would satisfy 🇷🇺's demand that 🇺🇦stay out of NATO, but Putin rejected it & pressed ahead with his military campaign, according to 3 people close to the 🇷🇺leadership-Reuters
There has definitely been some agreement that Ukrainian representative brought from negotiations. I think that putin had not treat the negotiations seriously enough to send there a person who’d he really empower to make the deal

Compare the two. Ukraine, highly motivated volunteers, keen as mustard, defending their country. Trained by the highly professional British Army. Western equipment.
Russia - emptying the prisons, press ganging locals from the Donbas, sailors being “transferred” to crew tanks, economic conscripts.

What we don't realise is that compared to the 1990s, life is still good in Russia, most are prepared to put up with a dictator compared to a time when they had a bit more democracy but when the standard/quality of life fell through the floor.
It will fall soon enough though and that’s when the problems will really begin.

Chemical weapons are pretty useless which is why it was so easy to get everyone to agree to ban them.
What’s stopping him from doing it now then, if it’s as easy as you say? Drop a nuke on Kyiv, Ukraine surrenders, job done? He could have done that already, so what’s stopping him?

To be fair you've been saying the same about him firing nukes since Feb as have many. It would take about 200 people in the chain of command apparently for them to get them fired. Many of those people have families and don't want the end of the world. I doubt even Putin wants that.
They said if the west sends heavy weapons we will escalate, they didn't, they said the same about fighter jets being sent and nothing, the same with tanks and Poland sent 300, US sent HIMARS that are blootering them and nothing.
They have just lost 8000km in a week nowt.
Putin isn't going to walk or be overthrown but Ukraine doesn't care about that, they want Russia off its soil
The tide is turning Russia is getting weaker every day. They can't resupply their heavy weapons due to sanctions. Their mountains of heavy artillery is running out, no first rate army needs to ask north Korea lol. China told them to bolt for weapons and criticised the war this week again.
Ukraine are getting stronger every day more western weapons, Russian acquired weapons, good trained soldiers coming online.
Russia has lost about 40% of its military personnel its estimated. Their economy is expected to nose dive further than after the Soviet Union fell, it will soon be smaller than Belgiums. Tens of thousands of Russians with degrees have jumped ship this year, its population is expected to half in the next 60 years. This is the death throws of a superpower

I just see him getting it down the chain of command, plus that is the end as soon as he does. Ukraine has changed the war with 20 HIMARS the US has 500, fighter jets that are a different world to the crap Russia and Ukraine are using. Russia will face the full force if they go nuclear.
I think Ukraine are going to win in getting back their land. But it won't be a win when the horrors are unearthed from each liberated town. There is no good in war unfortunately. But I think the news on liberating land will be increasing positive as the months go. Chin up brother. Putin lives on machismo and he's getting leathered by Ukraine right now and it'll be hurting the horrible gimp I'm sure

Russian could barely maintain their trucks or tanks.
Every single aspect of their military has suffered the consequences of corruption. Their nuclear program will be the same. I very much doubt they have spent the money to maintain it or train people properly with it.
It's just Russia bumping its gum, it's all they've got left to do.
Besides, dropping a tactical nuke anywhere in Ukraine isn't going to make them surrender, it would mean Nato rolling into Red Square.
As mentioned earlier, this is the beginning of the end of the Russian Federation as we know it.

Putin will do an address to the nation for the first time since he announced a special military operation.
He's expected to announce a referendum on luhansk, donetsk, Kherson and zaporizhzhia becoming a part of Russia. Vote will be by mail or Internet only, which is weird as the mail isn't running in most of the areas, a lot of the area doesn't have electricity or Internet. I expect close to 99% for separation as Putin is a bafoon and a believable win like 70/30 won't do him.
He's also thought to be considering mobilisation. This was always going to be a last resort. One it won't make much of a difference militarily, but more it will cause huge internal anger. People in Russia were happy enough when it was enlisted soldiers dying, especially as most were from far off areas. They are running out of young men in these areas, so the war could move to Moscow and St petersberg ect. There was always a fear this would be too far for the Russian public.
He'll probably have the elections first they will all be unanimous. Then when Ukraine attacks the annexed land they will say Russia is getting attacked with nato weapons.

Even if Russia mobilizes (I think deploying currently serving conscripts is more likely), almost all of these factors still favor Ukraine, including over the medium to long-term. A large number of poorly trained and motivated soldiers isn't a huge advantage
Ukraine has an advantage in:
-manpower
-learning lessons
-interior lines
-command and control/leadership
-clearer strategic goals
-precision fires
-morale
-ability to strike behind Russian lines (partisans)
-training volunteers
Many of these will grow over time

Russian mobilisation.
A thread
Chill everyone
Mobilisation in Russia doesn’t solve them anything.
It takes months and months to turn civilians into soldiers
Russia needs soldiers yesterday not in six months
It also doesn’t solve their equipment problems
Nor their logistic problems
Nor the fact that their command structure is sclerotic and can’t make decisions. Nor integrate intelligence into operations
The move is designed for domestic consumption in Russia.
Putin is taking some heat from his right flank for the recent rout of the Russian military.
The head bangers have been calling for a national mobilisation … and so here ‘it’ is
This of course won’t stop the western media whipping themselves up into a frenzy over it!

So what does this mobilisation or partial mobilisation mean in the context of this ‘special operation’ ?
This partial mobilization means every man that has had military training can be told they are signing up. Not sure how many troops that will add. They have chose not to sign up so many won't be happy to be told they are leaving their jobs and going to Ukraine.
Still won't sort the fact they have poor logistics and are running out of equipment for the soldiers they have.
Full mobilization would have meant 8 million civilian available. They wouldn't be able to equip or train a fraction of that though. Training would take 6 months, although Putin might just put them in the meat grinder. Would be hard politically because some Russians might be pro war, but not when they will be told to go to the front themselves

Would be hard politically because some Russians might be pro war, but not when they will be told to go to the front themselvesScary stuff, not having a choice but to, as you say, to get put through the meat grinder. The ***** bag should strap on a gun and head to the front line himself 🤬

It is said to have the potential to add 300k men but I doubt they get close to that. These are people who don’t want to go and have resisted all the financial inducements so far. Just rounding half of them up will require a significant force. Many will move abroad, refuse and go to jail or claim some other form exemption. It would be next spring before any are ready for deployment (unless the just send them to die quickly) and they don’t have enough weapons for them.
This announcement has shown more weakness in Putin than many thought.

I tend to agree but it's the sort of thing that could gather momentum, that people might feel a bit more able to express their true feelings if they saw others doing so and getting away with it.

The mobilisation is neither here nor there imo.
The interesting / sinister bit is the referendum / annexation / threatening folk with what they might do once those areas become theirs.
It was a situation that was almost inevitable from day one though and I'd be amazed if any of this has come of any surprise to anyone who has any clout on the side of Ukraine or the West.

I doubt the fake referendum will make the slightest bit of difference on the ground. It won’t change a single military plan of the Ukrainians. And no international body will ever recognise the results.
And threats from Russian have proven empty so far. Putin has been shown not to have the full control people thought he had.

Violence breaking out in Iran just now although not sure how far it will go. The difference between the two countries though is the age of the population. Iran is one of the youngest countries in the world where as Russia is full of old people. Young smart Russians regularly move to Europe but that is not an options for Iranians. Young Iranians are stuck there with very poor prospects. They are more likely to fight for change.

The biggest problem for Russia here is that more of the younger ones with prospects who have stuck around see the writing on the wall and flee now (after so many having already fled).
There had been talk of closing the borders to men of fighting age, that may be the next step.
As big a country as Russia is, by the time they end up whittled down to those who are in favour of the war, very few of them will actually be able to make a positive contribution to the war effort either militarily or economically.
The biggest threat to the West is the hellish position that Putin seems intent on backing himself into, and a cornered rat can be a dangerous animal.

Putin is living in the past if he thinks that numbers alone are going to make a difference. Poorly motivated, poorly trained and badly equipped soldiers are worth less on the battlefield today than at any other time in history.

The longer this goes on the more certain I am that Russia will collapse from within.
Ukraine don’t need to take back all their lost territory, just keep the Russians on the back foot long enough for it to happen.
It’s one thing for the Russian public to put up with or even support a war that’s far from their doorstep. A different matter when they and their family members get mobilised against their will.

I believe cynically this is what the west and the US is after, bleed them until they are destroyed.
I'm sure after the first few weeks after Ukraine pushed back it was clear nato could destroy them within a week.
20 HIMARS has given Ukraine the advantage the US alone has 600. Most of Ukraines weapons bar HIMARS are obsolete last generation equipment, although this is still better than Russian gear.
If nato gave Ukraine hundreds of HIMARS, f16 planes, modern tanks, long distance missiles them this would be over quick.
If they did that Ukraine would have its country back, but Putin would blame the defeat on nato. Alot less of his soldiers would be gone, they wouldn't have used up their millions of Soviet era tanks and artillery also. Their economy could recover quickly and sanctions would probably end.
This way Russia is destroying all its huge amount of stored military equipment, destroying its regular soldiers, destroying its economy, forcing Europe to get new energy routes, finally it could force Putin out

A revolution, in 1917. I’m puzzled when there might have been another one in Russia? The biggest change since must surely be the emergence of Gorbachev and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. That wasn’t a popular revolution, more of a powered elite vying for control and deciding on a change of direction. There was a failed military coup, which led to the rise of Yeltsin and what followed.

That clip says it all, a white Russian women barking at Dagestani Muslims. Dagestan is the poorest of Russias 85 federal regions and almost entirely Muslim.
The only footage of mobilisations today have come from the ethnic far flung corners of the federation.

For the 1000th time, we watch as Putin escalates despite the Allies self-deterrence. Not despite, actually, but because of it. When will the West learn that you have to cut cancer out quickly, not negotiate with it or fight it proportionally
Don’t send this or that essential weapon to Ukraine or Putin will escalate. Don’t create a no -fly zone or Putin will escalate. Don’t clear the Black Sea or Putin will escalate. You chose dishonor and you have escalation anyway. Every time
Instead of giving Ukraine what it needs to inflict the defeat required to end this war, the Allies are dragging their feet. It gives Putin, his military, and his propaganda time to adapt, invest, regroup. And winter is coming, this time literally

It’s an interesting point.
Ukraine were heading down a different path under their previous president. He wanted a 3rd term and to basically copy Putin. Same as Belarus.
The Ukrainian people said no. They objected, fought, and got Zelensky instead.
The Russian people could have done similar over the last 30 years but instead they turned a blind eye to tyranny, were complicit in the lies, and now find themselves where they are.
I find it hard to have sympathy for them. Too many of them support Putin and want to see the return of the Soviet Union.
I hope to see the Russian Federation disintegrate and a few new, smaller Federations spring up that can function as independent states in the same was as the Baltic countries can.

If it were me in that situation, I would go, get the training, and walk straight towards the nearest Ukranian unit with a white hankie waving and just hope they don't shoot me. What a position to be in. On either side.

Surely, I would have thought a country the size of Russia would still have a couple of hundred thousands of military personnel to use before even contemplating using untrained civillians
Ffs theres soldiers who sign up to fight and I would imagine a fair few would want to kiss Putins arse and then theres the ones who work in Burger King

He has no trained army left. Estimates of 50,000 dead and another 100,000 injured, even if inflated its ww1 loses.
90% of their elite vdv for example were slaughtered near Kyiv. If they had the soldiers they would use them instead of giving up territory. They need cannon fodder to plug the huge gaps in their defences.

If this were to happen it would probably end up with decades of civil wars and wars between the new states, with the people being the one who suffer.
Better if Putin get binned and replaced with a normal government.
I agree, but listening to various commentators, it could take 2 or 3 generations to get to a 'normal' government due to the ingrained corruption is every aspect of civil life.
There's no quick fix and any solution will probably take decades, but a few new central Asian countries or small federations would at least have a chance to make a go of things.
It took the Baltic states a while but they've never looked back.

Do you believe 20 modern tanks being sent would have been seen as too far for Russia. Poland sent 300 tanks and nothing, Slovakia fighter jets nowt. Previously you said Germany sending heavy weapons would be big news in Russia. Germany sent Mars 11 mlrs and Panzerhaubitze and nothing.
Mars 11 can blow up buildings 80 miles away, much more deadly and powerful than a tank. It's assumed they are happy to send Mars 11 as they are well behind the lines. They don't want to send tanks which could be captured and all the information and technology gone. I think that's fair enough but say that's the reason, not escalation.

He also said it about heavy weapons and I remember you saying it would be a coup for Putin to say Germany sent heavy weapons, he sent heavy weapons and no one cared.
It doesn't make a bit of sense that tanks would be seen as escalation, when we have went much further with HIMARS/mlrs. Russian media was going nuts about mlrs getting sent, quite rightly as they have changed the war. Germany, the US, Norway and UK have sent mlrs and they are blootering Russian lines
The next thing Russia is pushing against is long distance atacms. They have definitely been sent as seen in crimea, but a load would definitely be escalation for the good. More tanks isn't escalation when much deadlier and more modern equipment has already been changing the war

Just a random video of some call ups from Tomsk oblast preparing to leave for the front. Watching I wonder how many will be dead a week from now.
These guys are from rural Siberia, they are poorly educated and have very limited opportunities in life. They don't have the funds to escape this hell like much wealthier Russians in Moscow or St.Petersburg. They seem to be putting on a brave face but many must be resigned to their fate.
Just so sad to watch these videos, Russian losses are going to be catastrophic.

Hopefully they will surrender at the first opportunity and make it back home to their families after the war is over.

Yesterday, after hearing that putin's mobilized mob gets 0-1 days of military training, I said that 40% of these men will day within the first week... after seeing this video I have to revise that: 80% will die in the first week

Soldiers, most likely L/DPR guys, are sitting in the forest on the frontline, complaining about how they were dumped with no food or water, only with assault rifles
That would be backed up by a video I've just seen of a female recruiter telling new recruits to take sleeping bags, mats, tampons (literally to plug bullet wounds), tourniquets and car medical kits with them. All the army provide them with is rifles and uniforms.
They are going to be massacred. And for what?

Who would have more reason to carry out targeted attacks? The Russians, with a view to worsening economic chaos in Europe or the West/ Ukraine, with a view to worsening the economic situation in Russia?

It's an interesting one although could just be speculation and a coincidence. Apparently it would have to be quite a sophisticated operation with divers ect if it was deliberate

Hundreds of Russians surrounded at drobysheve , Putin didn't allow soldiers to abandon drob and lyman. They knew the next defensive line is a huge distance away, it means a huge amount of dead and POWs

The west don’t need to do it, they can just stop buying it if that’s their goal. I think pipelines running through middle of Ukraine are still operational so if they don’t cut them off, I can’t see them going to trouble of sabotaging under sea pipelines.

I imagine not cutting of the pipelines is in the small print of the military aid they are removing.

NATO have an agreement not to send modern Western battle tanks to Ukraine, why do you expect Germany to unilaterally break that agreement?

They haven't. Spain had an agreement to send them but Germany vetoed. Why would they have that rule as they have sent much more deadly and powerful weapons. I said this in my post. Im not really that bothered ad thankfully Germany sent some mlrs, they are much more of a game changer than upgrading the tanks.

I have a hunch that this - and what may be about to follow - could be of significance.
That new pipe from Norway had better be well guarded.

Oh yes they have. The Americans, Germans and Ukraine seem to think so.

Two of them are from Germany saying it. Spain a nato member agreed the deal and shipping time and Germany vetoed, sort of destroys your argument. The US last month said sending Abrahams are definitely on the table. Its been widely speculated that Ukrainians have been training on Abrahams and a 10s for over a month.

Even outwith tanks you must admit Germany's military aid to Ukraine has been pitiful no? You said before it will cause a big deal Germany sending heavy weapons, they sent mlrs (about as heavy as you can get) and nothing. Go all in if you want to seem important in Europe anymore
