The Scottish FA notes the decision of the FIFA Organising Committee to postpone the FIFA World Cup Play-Off semi-final against Ukraine, originally scheduled to take place on 24 March, until June.
Given the current situation in Ukraine we support the decision to uphold the request to postpone the match and reiterate our message of solidarity to our friends and colleagues within the Ukrainian Association of Football.
We now await confirmation from UEFA on the amended fixture schedule, including any displaced UEFA Nations League fixtures, and will comment further at that time.
In the meantime, we are in discussions to organise a replacement fixture on 24 March and will update supporters – especially those who have purchased tickets for the play-off semi-final and Nations League package – as soon as we have more information.
Tickets purchased for the original March 24 fixture date against Ukraine at Hampden Park will remain valid for the rescheduled June date, which has yet to be confirmed by UEFA.
We can also confirm that, with the play-off semi-final between Wales v Austria going ahead in March, a friendly match away from home to the losing side will take place on 29 March.
Ian Maxwell, Scottish FA Chief Executive: “In light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, it is the correct decision by FIFA to postpone our play-off, as requested by the Ukrainian Association of Football.
“The importance and significance of football is greatly diminished in a time of war and our thoughts are with those Ukrainian civilians affected by the conflict.”

Just found out that the majority of the whitefish eaten in the UK is Russian caught. That includes popular supermarket brands like Birdseye and Youngs as well as more than half of all fish eaten in chippies. Huge disruption to supply chains and for businesses if it is no longer acceptable to eat Russian caught fish. A minor thing, but interesting none the less.
It's the little things that matter.
If we can no longer get haddock and chips under £10 for example, imagine the pain Russians will be going through in comparison. Their younger generation won't be used to the old soviet ways.
As for McDonalds, I kinda assumed all western businesses would stop trading in Russia, isn't that the point of sanctions?!
If they don't voluntarily stop, I'd like to see huge pressure put on them.

They are mostly owned directly by McDonalds in Russia. Even if they weren’t, McDonalds franchise agreements give them total control over the brand and if they want to close a restaurant they will.

Yip, these are great commitments. Even I’m not criticising UK govt in this. Just the announcement of this will be enough to kill the Russian oil and gas industry. Investment will stop immediately now. They’ll be lucky to be able to fulfil orders by the end of the year anyway.

Russian nationals 'stranded' in Thailand amid flight sanctions
Thousands of tourists from Russia are currently stranded in Thailand, officials said on Tuesday, March 8, as unprecedented western sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine put a squeeze on Russians struggling to find flights and finances.
Flight cancellations, a ruble currency in freefall and payment problems from Russian banks being cut off from the global SWIFT system has left more than 7,000 Russians in limbo in popular resort locations like ****et, Koh Samui, Pattaya and Krabi, Thailand's tourism authority chief said

That was my thinking. I can see why Poland want the US to do the dirty work. Equally, I’m not sure what difference it makes as both are in NATO.
Just invite a load of Ukrainian pilots over to Poland and let them wander off with fuelled and armed mig-29s that happen to have Ukrainian roundels painted on them.

Suspect that the vast majority won't be buying it, if it had been about Nukes and Bioweapons I'm pretty sure that it would have been mentioned at the start, not two weeks later. Or are Russia trying to claim that they initiated the "special military operation" and just so happened to find evidence of WMD production in areas of Ukraine that just so happen to be very close to pro-Russian areas.

It's a small amount for both 8% of oil and 4% of gas. Difference is US has massive oil reserves it released 35 million barrels yesterday and will release 90 million this year, we don't so not comparable
It also doesn't have any controversy that we have when opening new reserves. It hopes to open more drilling sites to make up the difference.
Camo shows how controversial new sites is in the uk and fracking is political poison too.
We could commit to increase oil drilling and fraking but the environmental lobby would have to chose a side

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace reveals the UK has now supplied Ukraine's forces with 3,615 NLAW anti-tank missiles so far, and will soon begin supplying them with Javelin missiles too
A significant step up in the UK's involvement in the war: Ben Wallace also reveals the MoD is to supply UK-made, man portable Starstreak surface to air missiles to Ukrainian forces too (the fastest in the world), as well as more rations and medical equipment

@TrentTelenko
UK Starstreak missiles are seriously nasty & small anti-aircraft missile w/three dart warheads.
Being laser beam riding, Russian flares are useless to decoy them.
They are much faster than a Stinger & all the operator has to do is keep the crosshair on the aircraft
You would think the Ukranians would, from a military point of view, like to keep what they're being supplied with a bit hush hush so as to make a bigger impact on the battlefield.
With so much surface to air weaponry in inexperienced hands you can understand why NATO isn't that fussy using their aircraft to enforce a no fly zone!

They have advertised all they have got to pressure other nations and put some fear into the Russians. I think it's a bit obvious anyway with the 100 planes/helicopters and the thousands of Russian military vehicles that they are armed to the teeth.
They are also well trained on them and have excellent satellite and radar thanks to nato

Putin and the regime are totally unhinged, it's almost as if he wants a nuclear war. He must've thought "what's the worst possible thing we could do to bait them into it?", and just done it. And explain to me why we don't show the actual pictures of what's happening to people on the news? You go online and the Ukrainian people post as much video as they can and there is some unreal footage but it doesn't make the news? Are we too squeamish to see the real brutality of what's going on?

Certainly less than the USA, so the question remains, why is it taking our government 9 months when the USA can do it in weeks?!
How can you possibly expect anyone on here to be able to answer that.
You're talking about a global supply chain. You think it's as easy as flicking a switch?
You really need to think through the consequence a bit more. There will be literally be millions of people and businesses affected by every decision taken.
None of this is easy. Every decision taken is huge and has massive implications, some that we've probably not even thought about.
The UK gov will be working closely with every other ally to try and have a cohesive response. The sanctions so far have been well received by almost all commentators on this and are working.
There will be more to come.

One reasonable explanation is that the UK wants to be seen to be acting without the burden of actually doing something.

I know it's not a popular view, but I think the Uk gov has been tremendous during this conflict. Not perfect, but we seem to be doing an awful lot.
We don't need to be the best at everything. Right now, I'd imagine the Ukrainian gov is in more need of arms and intelligence than visas.
Allies should be playing to their strengths.
Neighbouring countries can offer the most practical support to those fleeing the crisis, we can arm the Ukrainians to the teeth and help them fight.
At the same time we're sending medical supplies, military supplies, logical support, intelligence etc etc.

I honestly don't know where to start, but really, to keep it simple I'll just say this - the UK Government lies. All the time. They say they're going to do something but they don't, they are doing everything in their power to keep Ukraine refugees from coming to the UK. They are just interested in skimming money from the public purse to pay themselves and their friends.
They are in hock to Russian money and are so compromised they can't act on sanctions for fear of upsetting the Russians.

They are telling huge porkers about sanctioning individuals. Its reckoned every Oligarch is only allowed to take his money out of RU if Putin gets a cut. Also remember each and every oligarch stole their means of making a profit. The amount of RU money in London plus the reticence to publish exactly who is being sanctioned stinks. Rees-Mogg published a round sum which included individuals and businesses "designated" to be sanctioned but as yet not.

I suppose there will a test for Johnson sooner or later. Allowing his oligarch friends and donors to interfere in his party and mess up the UK economy is one thing. Giving them carte blanche to do so without meaningful parliamentary discussion is another thing altogether.
It does speak volumes about the intertwined nature of the Tory Party and the RU oligarchs that such a move is even happening. What have they got to hide?

It's not what he's done but probably more a case of what he has on Johnson that earned him his peerage. Same with Gavin Williamson, though I doubt he is anything more than just an incompetent arse who happened to find himself in possession of kompromat through his role as chief whip.

For the last 5 years uk has trained hundreds of Ukrainian snipers and supplied them with their weapons. Supplied 2000 NLAWs pre war the only nation to do so and sent the paras to teach battalions how to use them. The nlaws were credited with stopping the early advances. I believe Russia had influence in the uk government particularly around brexit. But if the controlled the tories with money it must be up there with the worst money spent.
For the last 5 years uk has trained hundreds of Ukrainian snipers and supplied them with their weapons. Supplied 2000 NLAWs pre war the only nation to do so and sent the paras to teach battalions how to use them. The nlaws were credited with stopping the early advances. Now sent $100,000,000 of 3500 nlaws, javelins, stingers and sending $90,000,000 sky sabre system.

I very much doubt the oligarchs were funding the Tories for the benefit of Putin and def not Russia. It would have been for London to remain a haven for their I’ll gotten gains. Helping Putin with Brexit was just where their interests aligned in that the EU was bringing in stricter transparency laws.

The modern Russian patrol boat 'Ivan Bykov' which was burnt out by the Ukrainian Navy has finally sank in the Black Sea today
As the #Odesa-based newspaper Dumskaya reported, it was a specially designed secret operation of the Ukraine Navy. Two #Ukrainian speedboats provoked the Russian boat to follow them, so it sailed right into the prepared area of artillery fire and was successfully destroyed
One of the big reason the never is because British nlaws though. They have decimated an estimated 300 tanksFair enough. Motives and inclinations might not be all that obvious to all sides given the politics are murky at best.
Remember when RU moved into Crimea in 2014 Johnson blamed EU and equated them with Nazis. Sounds weird in light of the last few weeks but he pushed Putin's propaganda at the time.
Whatever is going down Crimea/Brexit/Skripal/Oligarchs - it's all as clear as mud. I don't trust any of them. There seems to be a slight push back on the Tory back benches, ie those not in on the game but they are also given short shrift by the Cabinet.

@gabrielmilland
So that's at least a tenth and perhaps getting for a fifth of the total US death toll for a decade of war in Vietnam. But in a fortnight. From a smaller population
Per capita, it's a death rate in two weeks of around 10 times the total number of British KIA over two decades of war in Afghanistan and Iraq.
If accurate, it's a daily death toll roughly equivalent to that suffered by either army at Verdun

I said a few pages back that they are nearing the same number of losses as their whole ten years of occupation in Afghanistan in the 70s and 80s. Incredible numbers, tragic but also very little sympathy.

I did say yesterday that the visa system wasn't fit for purpose. When digging a little deeper to try and find out why, the Tories never fail to amaze me.
Priti Patel ignored warnings that the Home Office contractor which told desperate Ukrainian refugees to wait weeks for visa appointments had the “sole focus” of making a profit and a history of squeezing cash out of applicants, openDemocracy can reveal.
It was claimed yesterday in Parliament that TLSContact’s visa centre in Rzeszow, Poland, had turned away applicants who had queued in freezing temperatures for hours, saying it had no slots available until the end of April. Reports on social media claimed the firm had been pressuring Ukrainians to pay for extra services beyond its basic free appointments.
The Labour MP Clive Efford slammed the situation as “complete chaos”.
Now it has emerged that the home secretary was told by the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration in November 2021 that TLSContact was so hell-bent on making profit that its use posed a risk of “reputational damage” to the UK. The firm has been handed government contracts worth hundreds of millions of pounds since 2014.
“[Its] sole focus is income generation. The human aspect is not at all valued,” one British Embassy whistleblower told the chief inspector.
The whistleblower added: “There are applicants being persuaded to buy unnecessary additional services at the [visa application centres]... The most recent contract with external commercial partners has meant that it is through ‘upselling’ these additional services that partners make their money.”
A British man who fled Kyiv with his Ukrainian family told openDemocracy he had been given a waiting time of 13 days for a visa appointment at TLSContact’s Budapest centre.
Wes Gleeson, 43, moved to Ukraine in 2010. He said it was “embarrassing” just how difficult it was to secure a UK visa, adding he had experienced similar problems with the company for years.
“The application tracker doesn’t work. The booking system doesn’t work,” he said of his dealings with the company in the past. “The only thing that seems to work is the parts where they’re trying to upsell stuff to you.”
Gleeson, originally from Oxford, said his wife Inna, 38, no longer wanted to come to the UK at all because of how difficult the government had made it for Ukrainian refugees to enter the country.
The couple escaped to Moldova last week with Gleeson’s sister-in-law and her seven-year-old child, before taking a 26-hour bus journey to Hungary.
The software entrepreneur’s comments were echoed by others on social media, who said the process for obtaining visas for Ukrainian family members was “cruel and bureaucratic” and that they were forced to pay TLSContact for additional services to make any progress.
Its parent company, Teleperformance Ltd, was awarded a £167m contract by the Home Office in 2014 to run the UK’s visa centres across Europe under the TLSContact brand. Gleeson said it was “horrific” and “pitiful” that the government had given so much money to the company.
The company, which is the UK subsidiary of the French multinational, was also paid nearly £259m by the Department of Health to run call centres for its much-maligned Test and Trace programme during the pandemic, which a parliamentary committee found had “no impact” on slowing the spread of the virus.
More than 14,000 complaints were made about TLSContact between March and September 2020, according to the same report by the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration.
The chief inspector said a lack of free appointments and support for filling out applications meant many customers were left with no choice but to pay for additional services. TLSContact’s Kyiv visa centre, which is currently shut, lists a £90 service to scan documents and offers customers a “flexible appointment” for £60.
The Home Office’s own customer satisfaction survey similarly found that, between January 2019 and August 2020, 72% of people applying for visas overseas through its private contractors felt forced to pay for extras to get a good service.
Staff based at overseas visa centres admitted that customers regularly experienced difficulties with filling out online applications and that more “support and language help is needed”. The report found that customers had to rely on relatives in the UK to help them or were advised to pay for assistance as no free support was provided.
One immigration lawyer told the chief inspector that TLSContact’s website was “broken” and that it had crashed on many occasions when trying to submit a request, while another site user reported being unable to upload documents.
The chief inspector recommended that the Home Office publish statistics on the number of free appointments being made available by overseas visa centres, but the department in its response to the report said that there was “limited value in publishing this data”.
Teleperformance has previously faced criticism from MPs and unions over its treatment of call centre workers.
Last year, an operator answering calls to the NHS’s 111 advice line told a parliamentary inquiry that the company refused to allow staff to work from home.
“Your beloved Covid-19 response line... is made up of hundreds of temporary employees, without proper contracts, no benefits, no holiday entitlement and worst of all we are crammed into a call centre,” the worker, who was not named, told the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee’s inquiry into the impact of the pandemic on businesses and workers.
They said they had witnessed operators come to work despite being ill because the company only provided statutory sick leave, which many said they could not afford to live on.
Teleperformance’s CEO Daniel Julien boasted of setting “new growth records” in the company’s 2021 annual report, which showed a 25% increase in revenue to €7.1bn.
The report said TLSContact, which has long-term contracts with 46 governments, had a “robust and unique business model” based on offering a “range of high value-added products and services” to people applying for visas.
Last year, openDemocracy revealed that Teleperformance Ltd, which operates in the UK but is owned by the French company, had received furlough payments from the government despite also being awarded a multi-million COVID contract.
The Home Office and Teleperformance had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.

Before anyone says, yes I know they are extremely well paid and not suffering hardship, it was more around the ability to restrict someone's ability to work (regardless of how well paid they are).

Boris Johnson is expected to announce more North Sea drilling, extra nuclear power and a greater use of renewable energy amid concerns over the cost of living
Britain could aim to cut out the use of foreign oil and gas within less than eight years as ministers consider restarting fracking as part of the push to abandon Russian energy.

Chelsea can still operate under a special licence but sale now on hold. Club will not be allowed to sell any more tickets - only season ticket holders can go to games for the foreseeable future.
Also: no merchandise sales allowed; no player transfers or new contracts; catering services will be permitted.

Apart from the most recent year, Chelsea has been profitable in recent years.
RA's exposure is a £1.5b loan. So add that to the asking price of the club, and that will give you an idea of the "worth" of his asset.
That all said, his stated aim was to take nothing out of the sale... which is why I find HMG's latest actions a bit meh. The only people who will suffer are those who might lose their jobs as a result of the reduction in income.

BREAKING
Roman Abramovich has been sanctioned by the Government and his asserts - including Chelsea Football Club - have been frozen
Chelsea have been given a special licence to continue with football related activities but the sale effectively bars the sale of the club
Abramovich is one of seven high-profile oligarchs who have been sanctioned by the government
The others include Oleg Deripaska, the owner of the EN+ Group, and Igor Sechin, the chairman of Rosneft
Sanctioning Chelsea Football Club effectively places it in limbo
A special licence from the Treasury means that 'football-related activities' such as tonights game against Norwich can go ahead
But Abramovich cannot sell the club
The Government would need to give special dispensation for the sale of Chelsea, and no money could go to Abramovich either directly or indirectly
'He [Abramovich] will not get a penny from the sale of the club'
Likely to be a protracted process

Has it been confirmed that is now complete? If the paperwork isn’t done yet then it won’t be getting done.
As the assets have been frozen and not seized, do the need Abramoviches permission to sell? If so, I can’t see this being a quick process and I think it will take Chelsea going into admin in order for a sale to go through?

Aiui, the freezing of his assets means that the sale can't take place.
However, I read somewhere that it will be allowed. If that's the case, then I can see it being quite quick. Presumably, any proceeds would remain frozen.
EDIT. BBC say that the sale might be allowed if RA can prove he won't benefit personally.

After the outrage across the country people will stop getting angry about this and move on. It’s a national disgrace that we cannot help these people more and while some thought this was all home office incompetence it is clear this is a deliberate policy that the silent millions in England who voted for brexit (based on “keeping those foreigners out”) will be delighted with or at best not change who they vote for.

Not sure they have that power TBH. They can freeze the sale proceeds, but for now they can't determine where they go. If they seized it, that would be a different thing.

Our laws on sanctions don't give the government the right to seize the assets of sanctioned individuals/companies. And obviously (thankfully) the government doesn't have the power to seize anyone's assets unless there is a law spefically authorising it

We forecast annual average growth in 2022 of -15% for Russia. This growth rate compares the average level of GDP in 2022 to that in 2021, so the implied GDP drop is far deeper at near 30% . Russia's GDP goes back to early 2000 levels. Two decades of growth go up in smoke.
