You need to open your eyes, he plays the ball onto Griezmann, I’m actually sure that’s what puts him off balance because I can’t see any definite contact on the follow through either. An utter shambles of a system. Should never be used for subjective calls.

Use to be a simple contact sport, not now.

I would say there were two phases to the incident
- Phase one, the Aussie commits to the tackle and may or may not have touched the ball, it doesn't really matter as the French boy is still upright and chasing the ball therefore no penalty.
- Phase two, as the French boy is chasing the ball the Aussie's foot catches him and trips him up (possibly even deliberate) - definite penalty.

If it didn’t hit AG foot it was going out for a throw in, he actually kicked the ball sideways. To me, the follow through is the biggest grey area. How many solid tackles do you win without then touching the player? None. It has to happen, it’s impossible to disappear. Unfortunate for the attacking player but the defender wins the ball clean as a whistle.

Does it come down to how much contact of the ball was made, as players make good contact with the ball, follow through and clatter into players all the time and no fouls are given?

I think it's about where the ball ends up - if it ends up clear of the attacker then it's a successful tackle (assuming no other infringements) but in this case the tackle failed because the attacker was still in possession of the ball until he was tripped.
Look at the first few seconds of the link posted by Victor Park - regardless of what happened before that's either a penalty or a dive IMO.
It's just too cool, now know what I'd call a kid

I think it's about where the ball ends up - if it ends up clear of the attacker then it's a successful tackle (assuming no other infringements) but in this case the tackle failed because the attacker was still in possession of the ball until he was tripped.
Look at the first few seconds of the link posted by Victor Park - regardless of what happened before that's either a penalty or a dive IMO.
I have watched it 5 times, and cant see why he went down other than he'd pushed the ball too far in front of him, and the obvious try for a penalty?
I'm not convinced he's caught enough to go down?

I kind of agree with that, I've been assuming that he was tripped rather than dived and the discussion was about whether the trip was a by-product of a fair tackle or not. Looking at the video it really does look like a dive - even the close up of their feet looks like there's no contact. On the other hand even very slight contact could genuinely send him over in those circumstances.
Who'd be a ref indeed. Or a video assistant ref (or whatever they're called).

They have both been incredible for years now. To think Messi is on a different level to Ronaldo is mental. What Ronaldo has done with Portugal is incredible, the way he lifts an average team to get results. His record against top opposition in Europe, like Messi, is also phenomenal.

I write a weekly article for a horse racing blog. I recently wrote a piece revisiting the Denman v Kauto Star rivalry and concluded that both were fantastic, they were different, both performed on the big stage and I was a fan of both. I also argued that one of the downsides of a great rivalry is that it often leads to both sides downplaying or rubbishing the achievements of the other.
It's the same with Messi and Ronaldo. You can't talk down the achievements of either. Both are fantastic, and different, footballers. Whilst it's understandable people can favour one or the other it's a bit ridiculous to play down what either has done. I feel privileged to have witnessed both.

Could it be down to attitude and application, or perhaps they are not as arrogant as some others may appear to be with higher aspirations along with a willingness to change and work to adapt to the modern game.

I've really enjoyed it so far and with Croatia who are always good to watch on later it's getting better, still don't like the VAR though, the lack of use in the Argentina game kinda devalues it even more, also think some refs might get complacent in thinking that I don't need to make a decision I will just get the VAR to do it
