4 European nations in the semi finals now.

Off at a tangent here but I think that the whole qualifying system should be reorganised.
Four western European sides in the last six, plus Croatia and Russia,
Africans, Asians long gone. South Americans out too.
Sides like Holland and Italy can't qualify because of the difficulty in qualifying in the European groups. They would quite comfortably see off the Central American, African and Asian teams.
Draw should not be regional to start with but made to ensure the best sides get through to the finals.

Couldn't disagree more. African teams have made it to the knock out stages every year since 1982 and Senegal only missed out this time due to fair play elimination in the groups. Japan were beating Belgium 2-0 with twenty mins left in the last round. Colombia, Mexico Uruguay played some of the best football of the tournament and could have gone a lot further than they did. USA and Chile both very strong teams who haven't qualified. South American qualification is notoriously difficult, do you increase access for them too? Cameroon and Ivory Coast are strong teams who didn't qualify.
The all euro makeup of the last four isnt representative of any wider pattern. Its been a brilliant tournament. If it isn't broken don't fix it.

Posted this a while back but I'd increase the number of nations in the finals - I'd double it to 64 in fact. Apparently its going up to 48 from 2026 anyway. Too many guff teams making it and too many good ones not in my opinion.
I'd do two things. First get rid of regional qualifying, its completely artificial and needless in this age of fast travel. It serves FIFA's corporate purposes of having everywhere represented regardless of quality but it doesn't make for the best nations getting there. Japan's qualifying route was laughable compared to the likes of Chile who are very good but got boxed in simply by virtue of being in South America.
Second I'd make the post group stage in the finals a seeded knockout draw. That way no-one can play out dull draws or try to lose in final matches to try to pick their next opponents. Base the knockout stage seedings on performance in groups to incentivise every game and goals.
A side benefit of going to 64: even Scotland should qualify. :greengrin

How the **** can Sweden with 10 million people be playing for a chance of getting into a World Cup semi final with all the excitement and national fervour that brings and we, with a population of around 5.5 million can't even qualify? We haven't qualified for the last five tournaments in a row.

We need to dispense with this tiresome attitude that as we were one of the first countries to play football, we don't need to change our approach and it's everyone else that is wrong.
Case in point - appointing Malky ****ing Mackay - the dinosaur's dinosaur - as our performance director, and this (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/32052408), one of many admissions that go right down to youth level about how our approach is completely wrong. England's approach up until this tournament is down to this attitude too, at least they seem to have changed to an extent recently.

It's true and it's interesting. When I think over the last thirty years or so, it's a struggle to come up with that many names of Scottish footballers who actively chose to go abroad to a decent league (outwith England) when at the early or peak years of their careers - I'm thinking maybe Eric Black, Gary Smith and Brian O'Neill. Players like Brewster went to Greece but that can't really be seen as a top European league and it was towards the end of his career. Our very own Steven Tweed played in Greece, Germany and Japan but I don't think it was top-flight.

I don't mind Keown, he's far from the worst of the co-commentators and occasionally will offer a tactical insight. Guy Mowbray is a solid pro, one of the best that BBC or ITV can offer.

The wedding reception and after party was totally unlike their football. It was wild, exciting, drunken, in a municipal castle at the head of a fjord with pished skinny dipping and the groom had to be forced to leave eventually.
I'll never forget being rat-arsed at about 4 in the morning in the castle's vaulted hall, huge thin vertical windows wide open with bats flying in and out of the hall and one of us playing tunes on the piano as we taught the four gorgeous Swedish girls in our company how to sing the full unexpurgated version of "We hate Glasgow Rangers, we hate Celtc too...".
The wedding cake collapsed as it was being carried into the reception, a bit like the marriage itself which became a slow motion car crash some few years later.

Arrghhhh suddenly Sweden play the best bit of football all game, unlucky not to score after that. English defence will get pulled apart against a better team.

This is the easiest quarter final you could ever wish for. How on earth have Sweden got this far. Dreadful.
Easiest group as well.
Tunisia
Panama
Belgium
Columbia
