Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 live
I hope Colombia get a hefty fine with whatever happens in this game. I feel sorry for the referee who should have been waving red cards instead of yellow ones.

Whatever happens the comedy has begun.
Almost as good as the Iceland game, just need another late goal to crush England’s hope of winning the cup

And it's not a 'I hate England' thing, far from it. You'll just not catch me supporting a country who's sports media and fans alike will go out their way to mock our game since we don't have the TV billions like them.
It's the arrogance that gets me, when they are playing or when they are discussing Scottish game. Every player they have is World Class and EPL is best league and Scottish players are rubbish in a garbage league. Cannot support them, wouldn't anyway, I'm Scottish. They have the right to support England, I don't feel a sense to support England. Just as I wouldn't support Ireland or Wales.
Ireland and Wales don't have same level of arrogance though so I'm not as enthusiastic with my lack of support. I won't deny I screamed "YES!!!" when Columbia scored.

That's just the default for me, lesser of two evils I suppose. If I knew of other nations being arrogant and talking about Scottish football as if it were garbage, I wouldn't support them either. I don't understand the notion of supporting the home nations or whatever it is, would England put out saltires if Scotland were in a competition...me thinks not...England is not UK or Britain, I think that line gets blurred far too often. Support your own country or support who you fancy in that competition, simple.
I supported Wales that time as well merely because they were an underdog, which is usually who I pick when I'm "neutral".

He was pretty prolific when he was at Milan and when he was at Sevilla. In fairness to him, the Columbian's haven't approached this game as they normally do, James is a huge loss. Very negative, service to Bacca and Falcao has been largely shocking.

Stand by the fact there is no point in having an official on the line or having a word with the goalie about staying on his line when they do heehaw about it
Sylar already has a solution, a new penalty line one yard behind the goalline where the goalie has to start from. I'm writing in to the new sepp blatter dude so it's in place for the final :agree:

They don't half go over the top winning penalties against a poor team do they...jeez almost out and then talk of them being contenders again. Be thankful to get through and then see where it takes you...its like an arrogance switch goes off in their heads.

Every competition I've witnessed England or English PL teams in, all I hear is they are best team and they have best league, they are central force to football, they have a divine right to go far. Just saying, that's what I've witnessed since birth hence why I want them to fail. I hate notion of supporting Britain's teams as well, why does that make sense? So we can hear about it for 40+ years, "could this be the year?" bs...tedious and boring. Any financial bonus from winning it - be it greater exposure for some of their players only benefits them and their leagues, why on earth would I support that? Madness. Kane will be worth £200m after this World Cup, McGinn will still be worth £1.5m-2m. English media are wonderful at hyping up their game. If they had a World Cup in the bag, every single player would get £10-50m added to their value and everything else that goes with that (wages and sponsorship). That bothers me, English football (top end) is destroying football, everyone is following suit to stay up with the trend. A World Cup in the locker could worsen that scenario...
If they play like that against France or Brazil, they will lose though so no worries.

Fair play to England. That shoot-out came down to focus and bottle and they prevailed.
In all fairness and trying to remain measured, neither side on show appear to have enough quality to win the thing but cup football does give any underdog a chance so I’ll no be going overboard with the ‘crappest team left in the competition’ chat. It would be a seismic shock if they did win it though and Sweden will test them next time out.
Thought the ref went to bits early on with cynicism, gamesmanship and downright obvious foul play dominating the narrative of the match.
I’m aware of the ‘if you don’t like what they’re saying turn the sound off’ argument but Tyldesley really is a slavering cheerleader who needs emptied. Hoddle’s just a twat.

How does England (the financial centre of football at the minute), not affect Scottish football (the direct neighbour that they normally disrespect?). Sutton is the only guy that sticks up for the game here forcefully...if he weren't around it would be Savage, Bellamy, Barton and the like...
Winning the World Cup will affect Scottish football, the financial difference between countries will be increased further. May encourage more foreign investors in their game. Was going to say except for in the British regiments where it is used to refer to the men. It’s not a normal “civvy” word.
Still feel it’s a hierarchal term used by the officer class.
Just never heard a Scot call another Scot, Jock. Been called it by plenty of English. Never in a nice or non ignorant way.

We fish against an English team every summer. Every year they greet us as Jocks and we refer to them as Johnny Englander. It's always affectionate and friendly. Of course we are beating them 7-1 over the years so it's easy to be nice when you're winning...:greengrin

It's one of two names given to me by my lazy English colleagues when I served. More people know me by this name than my real one. I'm just glad Captain Caveman didn't stick :greengrin
My Dad says the same about being called Scouse in his regiment

Apart from it really being a racial/ethnic slur these days...
Is it?

Exactly, surely no one is offended by Jock👍
Maybe some will as it’s a term most often used by English people in a demeaning context. If someone has a basic grasp of social skills, they wouldn’t refer to someone as a “Jock” etc. They would use that person’s name, or in this case, use ‘Scots’. Otherwise, they more than likely would be met with an equally unpleasent reply.

Everytime I've been called Jock, It's been by middle aged/senior English white males that also use derogatory names for other nationalities and those of a different race. Just my experience likes.

Ah well seeing as I never use it in a demeaning context I’m fine then. Phew had me worried for a second

Try saying it to someone next time you’re out. “Eeee alright Jock lad?!”, see what response you get.

Let me think......apart from Tafffy at work and Paddy down the pub I think I’m fine. No offence intended

Southgate conducts himself very well. What a contrast between him and the loon commentators.
In other news, all four of those next round fixtures look pretty mouthwatering.
