Try saying it to someone next time you’re out. “Eeee alright Jock lad?!”, see what response you get.
I think I will be less surprised than you, as someone who regularly gets called scouse my use of jock in return has never raised an eyebrow

Being half English, I get called Jock now and again when down there, but it's never bothered me. I've always just thought of it as a generic, used when you don't know someone's name, like the English will sometimes use a generic 'John' to strangers e.g. 'you got the time John'? Scotland is where the name is found; I've never thought of a 'Jock' being someone of lowly status. Do the Irish find being given a generic Paddy or Mick insulting? I don't know; it probably depends upon context and how it's used.

Scouse of course being after a Norwegian Dish enjoyed in Liverpool. Jock being part of the whole Sweaty Sock slang. Both the same of course...

Jock would have been preferable to when I was known as Shrek because, colour aside, I apparently looked and sounded like him! 😂

In other news, all four of those next round fixtures look pretty mouthwatering.
Yes he came across very well, when he talks about owning the situation and the moment ir’s pretty obvious he has involved coaches other than football coaches in his preparation

So because you didn't see it, it didn't happen? You've never heard about it?
No. Don't see the argument anyway tbf, if Scotland did it in the past it was wrong then, my point has been in my lifetime the hype and overconfidence from the English towards their clubs and their national team is incessant. Every single year. Liverpool to win the Champions League, Ramos purposely doing wrestling moves to stop Salah, Columbian player purposely headbutts Henderson and should be red, Henderson flicks his head and they just say "oh eh...ok maybe a yellow for that". Everyone is wrong, everything should be a penalty and a red except when they do it. It's like Celtic TV or biased media getting beamed across Scotland and everyone is supposed to be happy with the drivel they come out with. They know some Scottish fans will be watching as neutrals but speak as if it is just one nation watching "back home".
As you can probably tell I don't agree with the notion of Britain and think we should freely get to support whoever we please beyond our own country which in my eyes is Scotland. As an English person should be entitled to support England. Media coverage in Britain favours England because more people are located there but for countries to be lumped this closely together nowadays doesn't make sense for me. Would we get "an update from Scotland camp" if Scotland were out competing? Nah, not via BBC or STV (ITV) and if it were done it would be low budget. Maybe only on the news, not when Uruguay are playing Portugal. Imagine that half time between Uruguay vs Portugal, Linekar sitting there and goes, now an update from the Scotland camp. Then 5 minutes of interview with McGinn and it going back to the studio and them all saying "Yeah, he plays for Hibs and he is an outstanding player, could imagine a big move coming shortly for him, 10-15m at least"...never ever see that.

Not following you. Really don't see how England winning the World Cup affects us. If Hearts win the Cup - or anything really - they get resource and strength from that which is at our expense. Don't see how that applies to the world cup and us and England.
I'm pleased for them - especially after the years of penalties pain. I'm more concerned with us needing to improve big time than with them doing better or worse.
Hearts had 35 years of pain not winning anything. Personally I’d have happily given them 35 more. :greengrin
You’re even older than me, so when you were growing up England were real rivals, we played them every year in what was then a big game and we beat them now and then. You can’t just shake off these meaningless football rivalries.
It won’t kill me if they win and I’ll be happy for English pals but I’ll still be cheering for Sweden on Saturday and I really don’t see why I shouldn’t tbh.

Maybe some will as it’s a term most often used by English people in a demeaning context. If someone has a basic grasp of social skills, they wouldn’t refer to someone as a “Jock” etc. They would use that person’s name, or in this case, use ‘Scots’. Otherwise, they more than likely would be met with an equally unpleasent reply.
What a load off guff! Does the same apply to Taff, Geordie, Scouse, Kiwi, Oz etc etc? No it doesn’t!

I’m not offended by Jock, no. I was giving an example of why some may be offended. You are correct about not particulary liking the English though, due to their feeling of superiority over everyone else and a right of entitlement they seem to feel. A bit like fans of the Old Firm.

Everytime I've been called Jock, It's been by middle aged/senior English white males that also use derogatory names for other nationalities and those of a different race. Just my experience likes.
Yup, my experience too - worse since the impending Brexit, by the way - was asked in all sincerity in London last week why "all you Jocks" like the EU more than you like "us".
" Don't know Nigel, we just do" was my retort.

Is it?
If someone calls someone a generic name because of where they come from I'd suggest that is a ethnic slur. Is gringo ok then? Yank? Gypsy? Hun? Jerry? Kraut?
What was used in armed forces I would say cannot be treated as a mark of respect within every day society, sorry that doesn't work. I never served in the 9th Division or any armed forces so if an English person (or anybody) calls me a Jock that is an ethnic slur, no mark of respect is meant, it is clearly meant in a derogatory fashion.

Just to put a spin on that - there would be far superior numbers of English fans hoping Scotland to lose in a World Cup than those in Scotland wishing them to fail. Guess those people are ok though, eh? Better reasons perhaps? Who'd have thought that all nations within Britain have a degree of national identity about them? Evil SNP at it again!!!!!!

S/he is entitled to feel however s/he likes as long as it isn't hurting anybody. What I find mind boggling is that "Jock" is getting discussed whether it is a slur (it is!) and people seem to be disregarding that but at the same time you took some sort of offense to someone suggesting a dislike of English (not me incidentally!). Then you went on about hoping England win so it annoys "people like" the poster you originally quoted. Point I was eluding to is many English people do not like Scottish people. Many Welsh do not like English and Scottish. And so on. I do not condone it but to say you hope England win to annoy some subset of Scotland is a bit mental tbh, you should support a team you want to win not in spite of someone.

What gives you the right to say what I should be offended by btw? Not a question of sheltered lives. There are many "nicknames", as you put it, that would cause deep disrespect these days that were acceptable in the past. Does that mean sheltered? Nah, it means things move on, society evolves and hopefully one day we won't feel the need for nicknames born out of the militiary or some other reasons. I guess everyone to the north is fine being called Teuchters, maybe not actually as they're living sheltered lives away from civilization in the wilderness! Queue the Game of Thrones wall references!

Kane will be worth £200m after this World Cup, McGinn will still be worth £1.5m-2m. English media are wonderful at hyping up their game. If they had a World Cup in the bag, every single player would get £10-50m added to their value and everything else that goes with that (wages and sponsorship). That bothers me, English football (top end) is destroying football, everyone is following suit to stay up with the trend. A World Cup in the locker could worsen that scenario...
If they play like that against France or Brazil, they will lose though so no worries.
In what way are they "destroying football"?

We are staying in Paris for a couple of weeks and watched the game from our hotel room. Coincidentally, a few Colombian chicks (behave) are in the room next door and got very loud after the equalizer. The wife is English and supports Tottenham so obviously has a few dogs in the fight. When they won the penalties we got very loud and she ended up outside on the balcony doing a moonwalk back to theirs.
I don't like the English media and there are a few English fans I don't care for much but I find it a bit conflicting because I like watching the Premier League. I want the English team to win except against my teams which would be Scotland, USA and Mexico in that order.

Being called Jock by parents is hardly the same as being called “a Jock” or “Jock” when it isn’t your name. That’s just being a wee bit silly. Maybe when people in Ireland are called Patrick, Paddy gets used for them, I’d say no argument as it is kind of a shortening of their birth name. To call everyone in Ireland, even those whose names bear no resemblance to Patrick or similar, “Paddy” is a slur. No attempt to ask their name and just using a derived name for all Irishmen instead...
I said yesterday this was getting a little silly, you can look it up online, “Paddy” and “Jock” are both viewed as ethnic slurs, arguing they aren’t because some parents named their kids that just has no logic...parents can call their kids anything even something racist...

I'm English and was supporting England last night, but even I reached the point where I had to turn the commentary off. And surely they should have had at least one token non-Englishman on the pundit line-up to dilute it a bit and give a bit of perspective? Neville, Dixon, and Wright just winding each other up to ever greater heights of ludicrousness. At least the manager and players seem a bit more humble and likeable, than the media has-beens ...
England deserved to win, not great but Colombia tried all their dirty stuff to try and win. This has been a truly weird world cup with many of the favourites out already, anyone could win it.
As for the word " Jock " it's a Scottish derivative of the name Jack and it's been used for decades as a nickname for people from Scotland, similar to Geordie's, Scousers, Taff's etc, don't get offended by something so trivial, there's more troubles in this world to get upset by than a silly nickname.

1. A North American male athlete.
2. Short for Jockstrap
3. in the plural it's male briefs.
4. The Jocks were the 9th (Scottish) Division in the army.
5. A slang term for masturbation in the Caribbean

More troubles than a “silly nickname” certainly but people reserve the right to get offended and upset by what they want. You’ll get upset by petty things such as a football club, Hibs, from time to time I’m guessing? Many people would say that’s silly as well. Cool I found something else when I googled. Guess you’re right though, had enough debating this, maybe I’m too young and have my own view of it, maybe I’m just being seen as a troll or even a Jessie by some (the coincidence in that would be hilarious as that’s also an incident name but is used as a slur). Don’t care, I’m out and still offended by “Jock” being used in my direction.

More troubles than a “silly nickname” certainly but people reserve the right to get offended and upset by what they want. You’ll get upset by petty things such as a football club, Hibs, from time to time I’m guessing? Many people would say that’s silly as well. People get offended or upset or not, telling them how they should feel isn’t right!
Aye, but having read number 5 on the list I appear to be an experienced 'jocker' of some standing.
I'm now offended that people are offended.

After a wee bit of betting luck in the Belgium Japan match, Lady Luck was with me again last night. At just over even money, I thought England were a decent bet. With a couple of minutes to go I thought I was home and dry but for some reason I looked at the cash out value which was not far short of full value. For some unknown reason, I clicked on cash out a minute before Colombia scored ........ result. :greengrin

The commentary last night was nothing short of a complete farce. Never heard a "uk" TV station so biased in my whole life. Had to check it wasn't rangers TV. The highlight being when sterling was grabbing the Colombian boys shorts and hoddle hit out with that sterling was being fouled
You obviously never heard Archie or Arthur in full flow.My favourite was Arthur shouting a warning to Bremner “watch your back Billy”.

Thanks for posting that JMS, shot and save looked outstanding at the time but I never saw any replay. Now that I've looked at it on the link it's as impressive as I thought. That keeper is a loquacious wee bam mind, I thought he'd never shut up in the post match interview.

The ball moved a fair bit - you could see that the keeper moved to get his body behind it and the ball swerved to his side, squiggler-like.

Brazil just are not all that anymore Neymar is good and I like Willian but Willian isn't even on the radar of great forwards for Brazil.
Brazil as well as having great forward thinking players they had great reliable defenders and defensive midfielders.
Dunga, Branco, Alemao, Cafu, Aldair,Junior. There is nobody close to these guys out there tonight.

Superb.
The plodding thugs of Uruguay turfed out by a team that can play with some flair and the nation that has traded on its flair reputation long after it departed about to be dumped by a Lukaku inspired side that plays some of the most refreshing international football there is just now. A victory for open attacking play.
Hopefully England dump Sweden and Croatia do Russia and the winner then has to come from among teams that want to play football rather than grind results.

it's a bummer it's possible a team that deliberately got beat in the group stages to get an easier route, could possibly play in the final against teams like France and Belgium, get it sorted Fifa, kick the cheats out, change the system :agree:

Uruguay are far from plodding thugs. 2 bookings all tournament and played some great football. It's 2018, not 1980.

Nope, not for me. Their off the ball constant elbows, scratching, verbals all designed to try and get either a reaction and yellow or red cards or an injury for opponents are delivered constantly and cleverly throughout the game. Of all the thug teams they have adapted best to VAR, making it subtle, niggling, constant and negative without making it big enough to get VAR called. I'm delighted they've been deservedly dumped.
Been saying it for weeks I still don’t rate Brasil as others do, their overrated because they are ‘Brasil’

Eh ? Uruguay haven't been dirty. Brazil still have flair despite just about about to be emptied. Sweden have been playing football, just because they haven't lost many goals doesn't make them negative.

Just wants to be the man to much. Pulling rank on everything and trying to do it all himself. They'd be a better team with him out and Firminho in IMO.

The only thing this Brazil side have in common with the flair teams of the past is their name. Sweden have played dull counter attacking football, I've found it pretty boring.

Brazil and Neymar, in particular, taking some pelters on here.
He ripped Celtic a new one so it demonstrates just how far Scotland have to go to get anywhere near making an impression in international football.
Just my opinion.
