When Youan ran through early on, Vente absolutely bust a gut to get into the box and was at the edge of the six yard box and available for a square ball when Elie got his shot away.
For the Maolida chance, he was again in the box ready for the square ball, that attracted the defenders to him and created the space for the cut back to Maolida.
He was also right involved when Youan missed the header (as you would expect). If Youan hadn’t got up for it, Dylan was right there.
Exactly. They all want their Instagram highlights rather than be team players. It's not a good recipe.

He made a good run for the Moalida chance, took the defender away and the kind of run one of the front two has to make. The rest of what you say is kind of the point I’m making. There is loads said about him not being in the box, he is plenty, the ball either isn’t falling for him or he just doesn’t have that instinct to be right where he needs to be. Made the same point after the Motherwell game, nearly every chance we had he was there or thereabouts, without being the one to get on the end of anything.

His instincts are fine. In those key moments last night he made exactly the runs you’d want him to make, and was available for a tap in. Youan didn’t find him either time (was correct to pick out Maolida the second time) - which proves the point that I and others have made about lack of service.

I never spotted the Vente run, bur definitely noticed his work at the Moalida chance and the Youan header. He also made runs whch presented Obita have a target for sone long balls, one of which he was very close to connecting with ( maybe could have done better?) .

I just think everybody else seems to be getting the blame for his current lack of form apart from him. He’s obviously not been getting chance after chance created for him but I just think a lot of the chat about him never being in the box is a bit exaggerated. If he makes more of the right runs then he’ll get the ball. FWIW I thought he did that last night. The Motherwell game I mentioned, everything was coming out towards the edge of the box looking for the ball. He’s just not showing enough for me for someone that I keep reading is a top player. I don’t think he’s a bad one by the way, but he needs to do more (he’s not alone).

The one Obita played over the top, first half if I’m thinking of the same one, Vente was annoyed with himself for not getting it down. Again, it was a run towards goal though and that’s what he needs to keep doing.

Fair enough man. As we have well established over the course of our conversations, I feel for him as I think he’s doing as much as he can without getting the rewards.
Either way, hopefully we can create a lot more going forward. Emiliano certainly looked the part last night.

That's bad timing. Maclaren is exactly what we need up front. Great positioning and awareness, great attitude, not afraid to shoot and more often than not, always on target. Unfortunately now we have a whole load of erratic attackers in our squad.

See I think he’s the complete opposite of what we need in our current system.
Poor link up play, not overly strong or fast and does all of his good work inside the box. Him being asked to drop deep etc would be a nightmare imo.
Hopefully Marcondes starting means he’s the ones that drops deep and allows Vente to go higher up the pitch and hopefully take his chances - still don’t think we create anywhere near enough chances, a cross come shot every now and again from Jair etc doesn’t quite cut it

Doidge and Jeggo would go with my best wishes. I actually thought the best we've looked in midfield this season was when Jeggo was in there just after NM came into post. He does have his limitations, granted.
I agree with the poster that said we will lack a physical option up front if Doidge goes. A more physical striker would be good as an option as a plan B. Not that NM does a plan B.

To be fair to him I always felt he wasn't fit that second season, nor did we ever play him with Kamberi who partnered him brilliantly.

I think we have that type of player to pick that pass in Marcondes tbh. Even in Levitt, but we need to balance our midfield better.
I like that the manager has a preferred style and wants to create an identity with it but he needs to learn you can’t use the same formation every game. We need a plan B, or to pick a formation that picks apart the opponents weaknesses. Lennon for all his faults was great at chopping and changing formations - apart from his 5 defenders against Killie :greengrin

Lots of aggressive replies to this, in line with the "everything is s***" theme, seeping accross here and social media. We really do need to calm down.
For what it's worth, maclaren is the all time top goalscorer in Oz and a proper finisher who doesn't need just a mcginn and Allan behind him to score goals. Just my opinion.

I think your right about Marcondes , impressed with him when he came on , looks a quality player and hopefully he's the creative midfielder we been lacking since Allan left . I'm not sure about Levitt tbh , hasn't impressed me and don't think him and Newell are a particular good pairing though hopefully he'll come good yet .
I've brought up Monty using the one formation a few times and I don't mind him playing that way though playing it all the time like against the old firm's quality or even when we aren't having any joy from it I'd like to see him being more flexible in changing his system. Always good to have a plan B when things aren't going so well which I hope Monty might consider doing yet 👍

No idea if that player is any good, or if the rumour is true. However it is encouraging , for all his faults, to see that Monty at least appears to see some of the same issues that the fans have for years. Transitioning Stevenson & Hanlon out of the starting 11. Identifying the midfield as needing fixed and the type of signing he’s looking at in Amos. A link man in Emiliano etc.

With the greatest respect to NM though, this is why we have a DoF as well to continue work on improving us longer term than just what any one manager thinks in the immediacy. Happy to bring another midfielder in but not if it’s at the expense of a CB or full back.
I know we bang on about Monty constantly playing 4-4-2 but it’s possible because he hasn’t got the quality in midfield or at the back that will allow him too change it.

That’s the spirit. We sign a player who on paper is better than we have any right to be signing but let’s write him off 😂.
Match fitness shouldn’t take long to come for a non injured 26 year old who has already been training.

His loan was a pretty dire one all round, however I think it was telling that he started looking like a bit of a player towards the end of the season. Almost like he needed a proper pre-season and time to get himself fit again after his ankle injury.

I haven't seen the guy so not going to say he's great or terrible but as far as I can see, his only experience is League 2.

It's all down to quality at the end of the day.

I'm not so sure. I don't want to criticise either player. I've never seen them and they may be top class.
But based on their experience, and the level they've played at, they don't look like the type of player I think we need.
Qualities like experience, leadership, knowledge of the Scottish game etc are what we need to push us on for the later half of the season.

Kind of where I am. One of both might turn out to be brilliant but always think it’s tough bringing a player like that in to a struggling team without a bit stability.
I can’t work out for the life why, in the summer as well as now, we haven’t went and signed a proper, first pick centre half.

We've also had a fair few flops who have been older and more experienced! I understand folk being concerned, I have more fear when we sign older journeymen who many on here like to christen as "wage theives". Most of them have had their careers and are coasting, just getting a wage. The young guys are starting out and, in their minds, want to be the best. If we give them that platform then that's fine with me.

I understand your concerns as we have had plenty of young players who havent been up to it, a few have though. However, if we have now got an established link with Bournemouth, which it seems we have, id like to think they arent sending us poor players? Surely they are going to be better players?

They may be similar experience but that doesn't mean they're the same level of player. Especially considering there's a 3 years age gap, maybe Bevan is developing quickly and is ready for another challenge?
Also in reality if he's coming as part of a free loan to be our 4th choice CB while the guy we own in Harbottle is out starting every week on loan and someone else is paying his wages for now then I guess that may help us in the long run too.

I suppose with these young guys you sometimes get to borrow from Premiership clubs it makes sense to get them now.
If it turns out they are stars of the future this is realistically the only time we will be able to get our hands on them.

Yea, hoping the players we get from Bournemouth aren’t ‘dead rubber’ and are the players that need experience to propel them to the PL - likewise some of our new signings should be of that calibre
Time will tell but I’m going out in a limb that these will mainly be super quality players

I think what we are doing is incredibly risky and could easily blow up in our faces.
None of the guys we are signing (rumoured to be signing) have played much recently and/or have very little experience at our level.
Like others I feel that we need to sign some good seasoned pro’s maybe with less upside potential but smart enough to add grit and determination to a squad that looks lacking in it.
If we have to wait half a dozen games or so for these guys to get to grips with things we could find ourselves close to the relegation spots.

Agreed. Video from Dubai our manager said wants players that are ready to play . None of the signings are match fit and that takes time . Two haven’t played since last season. Also , said didn’t want young inexperienced players. This is exactly what we have signed .
They may all be good signings, time will tell. There’s also been big big names came to play in Scotland and failed .

What really concerns me is we aren’t prioritising a goalkeeper. David Marshall has been really poor for us consistently making mistakes. We’ve actually weakened that position by letting Boruc go while Jojo is away.
The squad planning element is baffling. We let Harbottle go when we had 2 fit centre backs and then Hanlon got ill. This meant we had to play Obita at CB. It’s just bad decision making and it’s costing us and would sympathise with Montgomery in that regard.

Lack of a proper first pick centre half both in the summer and now is just proper neglect of such an important position. I don’t get it at all.

What really concerns me is we aren’t prioritising a goalkeeper. David Marshall has been really poor for us consistently making mistakes. We’ve actually weakened that position by letting Boruc go while Jojo is away.

Seen a lot lately about Marshall but he’s been pretty decent for us this season, other than a mistake on Wednesday night. To say he’s been consistently poor for us is some exaggeration, he’s mostly been fine this season

Marshall has been in very good form recently but it was obvious last season that we needed to strengthen that position.
Totally agree that centre half should also have been a huge priority and absolutely neglectful for it not to have been properly addressed.
We seem to be constantly bringing in players who won’t improve that all important ‘spine’ of the team or addressing the obvious problem areas. Absolutely baffling.

Marcondes, Maolida and Amos are not really inexperienced players.

Marshall has been better since Montgomery came in. For me, though, some of the criticism is unfair. I think he makes a lot less mistakes than his team mates, it's just because he's in goals it seems worse. They're all guilty of mistakes, be it terrible passes, losing the ball by pissing about or missing sitters. Indeed, many of the goals we have lost which are attributed to mistakes by Marsh have originated from mistakes further up the pitch in the first place. He's not immune, absolutely not, but far from the worst imo.

It’s not an exaggeration though when you consider his whole time with us and how many goals he has cost us. He has been a bad signing and statistically one of the worst in the league last season. He can’t inspire confidence in the backline. I think our expectations are well too low if we are happy with Marshall in goal.

He was poor last season, no denying that, but he has improved massively this year and is probably one of our most consistent players just now. Can we improve in that area? Of course. Would it be a priority for me? No

Fair enough. I don’t want to steer this off topic. If I was manager I would want a keeper and a centre back to come in and start.

We can carry on with Marshall till end of season but he will make mistakes.
In summer we need a better keeper 100%.
Regarding Bevan - really not sure it's what we need right now. He's been playing right centre back for Cheltenham Town and not played since 9th December.

I think if we end this window with the three lads we’ve gotten and the two Bournemouth lads I’d be happy with that. Five names in plus Megwa will be like a new signing.
Can’t ask for that much more in January I think.

It's the CB that worries me the most. We have 4 midfielders once Jeggo leaves (Newell, Levitt, Amos and Marcondes), with JDH to come back. Having another young guy on loan to compliment those options is fine.
But we need a first choice CB to come in and hit the ground running. We already have a 20 year old CB on loan. I'm not sure another is what I was hoping for.

The players we’ve signed aren’t inexperienced, or especially young.

Agree with this, our transfer approach still reeks of those in charge trying to be too clever IMO.
Don’t see any of the new players (Brazilian aside, possibly Amos if he can stay fit) improving us in all honesty
