This woman is being paid to go and speak to people. People are paying her money. To speak. To them.

What has she got to say? Genuinely, who is looking for her "expertise" to be imparted on them?

If I caught wind that any organisation I was involved with professionally or personally was paying to get her to go and talk to them I would boycott them.

Old pals act, being asked serious questions about Labour and being treated seriously - when each and every one of them lied daily when in power.

It's almost as though the political media in London live in a tiny rhetorical bubble, in which they are never effected by anything and all the ills and woes of the country are just on paper chattering points to be scored.

Someone asked in response to this Truss quote about stopping NHS cancer treatment, what would people do who needed cancer treatment? The "bubble" response is obviously they would pay to go private. This is where we were heading under the lying Tories. It remains to be seen if the NHS will fare better under a Labour Government. The settlement of the junior doctors' dispute is an encouraging start.

I'm no great fan of Janey Godley, but no one facing cancer deserves to have the potential leader of the Scottish Tories post this on social media.

Because they used them to house/detain asylum seekers. Not quite as simple as that. The scheme was ended in 2022; only one of the seven sites in the scheme was used to house asylum seekers and that wasn't done until last year, after the arrangement with Homes England was terminated. Announced to great fanfare, once again the Lying Tory Government did absolutely nothing. Zip. Nada.

Alarm at failure to inspect 60% of England homecare providers in four years or longer

Care leaders have warned of a serious safety risk as research revealed 60% of homecare providers had not been inspected for at least four years, or ever.

As the government prepares to receive a report on profound failings at its Care Quality Commission (CQC) that triggered the chief executive’s removal this summer and a public apology, the Homecare Association warned 37% of providers of domiciliary care services had not been rated for at least four years and 23% had never been rated. If anyone votes for the Lying Tories again in my lifetime, they need their heads examined.

Private Eye. Central Bedfordshire council has “mothballed” the housing company it set up in 2020, New Vista Homes, because despite consuming £600,000 of public money a year it hasn’t actually built any houses.

Apparently a tory MP involved with New Vista Homes.

A great article as usual from JBM on the subject. One major problem is the constant loop of objections meetings and planning. I put up before a train line in England only 5 miles long got eventually scrapped after sitting 8 years in planning and having a 20k page report. Someone is making huge amounts from planning and objections in the uk it would be good if someone dug into it.

The donations aren't tax-deductible for the donors. Largely for that reason, they're not taxable on the donees.

The £3k you're thinking about is the annual limit on gifts by individuals, for Inheritance Tax purposes. Donations to parties are exempt from IHT.

Tories shelled out £114m in payouts for undelivered Covid contracts

The health department and the UK Health Security Agency have shelled out £114m after cancelling contracts for equipment that was never needed, or items which didn’t meet specifications, a Good Law Project investigation has revealed. All these payouts were made before the election. And 86% of this money has been handed to firms linked with senior Tory figures.

Liz Truss at the Lying Tory Conference:

Liz Truss tells Conservative party conference that she is a "huge fan" of Argentina's far right leader Javia Milei. Says if Milei were standing for Tory leader "I would back him in a shot"
I would have done better than Rishi Sunak at the general election and could even have won if I'd stayed as leader, says Liz Truss
Liz Truss now calling for universities and other organisations to be "defunded" if they're "antithetical to conservative values"
Asked to say something that will cheer up the audience, Liz Truss replies that "Donald Trump might win". Big round of applause from the audience
Liz Truss says she agrees with Kemi Badenoch that some cultures are "less valid" than others, saying that Britain is based on "Judeo Christian values and that should prevail". Adds that she thinks the Star of David should be placed at entry points to the UK
Theresa May "is part of the establishment" unlike me, says former Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, Liz Truss
Liz Truss says people's mortgages only went up after her mini-budget because of the Bank of England, not because of anything she said, or did. Blames "the media" for not reporting she wasn't to blame.
"Conservatives won't succeed until we get rid of the Office for Budget Responsibility," says Liz Truss

You'd think any party would be too embarrassed to put such an idiot on a conference podium.

Then you remember it's the torys.

Kemi Badenoch:

"Islamist terrorism is something that should never be appeased," she said."Israel is at the frontline, and it is surrounded by a lot of enemies.

"I think what they are doing is extraordinary.

People said getting the leader of Hezbollah couldn't be done, people ask Israel to do things like be more targeted so they don't harm civilians.

"They did that amazing thing with the pagers and when they did that they were criticised for it.

"They are always criticised, and I am very sympathetic to the Israeli argument."

She later added that "we must not forget the Palestinian people who are not Hamas".

Jenrick's crazy video and his determination to leave the ECHR

Jenrick provides no explanation as to how he would deal with the consequences of leaving the ECHR. It underpins our current relationship with the EU. Without it we will be unable to share data essential to commerce and security and our TCA would collapse. The Good Friday agreement requires Northern Ireland to be adherent to the ECHR and we have agreed it should. Not to discuss how he intends to get round this makes his pitch valueless.

Unfortunately it’s possibly not as straight forward as this. If Labour implode, which they are always more than capable of, then the Tory’s win regardless of their leader.

Starmer didn’t win a landslide because very many people particularly thought he was good, but rather because the Tory’s had imploded. The same can just as easily happen the opposite direction at the next execution.

Reform are the big variable in this of course if they increase their vote share.

Even if Labour don't implode, all the Tories need to do to win the next election is lift the phone to Farage and persuade him to join them. Tories and Reform combined will waltz a 2029 election unless Starmer's government turns out to be very special indeed, and so far there's not too much sign of that.

When the Farageists absorb the swivel eyed loons that are left in the remnants of the Nasty party there will never be a better time to divide mainland britain, the "south" and everywhere else might take care of England electorally?

The in-flight catering for James Cleverly’s one-day round trip to Rwanda last December, while he was home secretary, cost £655 a head. Cleverly spent £165,561 chartering a private jet for his 11-hour visit to Kigali to sign Rishi Sunak’s deportation deal after the supreme court’s finding that Rwanda was an “unsafe country”.

He travelled to Kigali with officials and a TV crew on 4 December and signed the new legally binding treaty alongside Rwanda’s foreign affairs minister, Vincent Biruta.

It can now be revealed that the catering for the eight-and-a-half hour return flight for Cleverly and his 14 officials cost £9,803.20, or £653.55 a head, according to a freedom of information response given to the Labour party. The TV crew paid for their own food.

Ministers are to take a direct role in overseeing the building of the HS2 rail line to try to "get a grip" on the rising cost of the high speed route between London and Birmingham.

Transport Secretary Louise Haigh said it had long been clear that the cost of HS2, which could reach £66bn, had been allowed to "spiral out of control".

Hope it goes higher since we get 10% to spend on what we want. Infrastructure projects in the UK are crippled by bureaucracy and consultations. In the UK our rail and trams projects cost 2.5 times the price of French projects. A good thread on the subject. The lower Thames Crossing's application in now 300,000 pages long and has cost £300 million and it's not even been started. Be like the French, Spanish, Norwegians and Germans just get it built

We spend about £1.6BN a year on prescriptions in Scotland , something like an average of 21 prescriptions per person per year. Is he saying those that can afford to should pay or is he saying nobody should get free prescriptions?

What if by making those that can afford to pay saves £600M a year that could be diverted to other NHS services?

How much would it cost to implement and operate a system where some people pay but others don't? What impact would it have on the take up of prescriptions? Suppose I can afford 21 prescriptions a year but I'm seriously ill and I need 120 prescriptions a year. How is that managed?

(And nobody should get paracetamol on prescription as they are about 40p in the shops)Agreed. That's surely down to the doctors and people filling out prescriptions to make sure they don't prescribe such easily obtained medicines. Then again, what if someone can't afford even 40p for paracetamol?

In England you can pay for an annual certificate that costs about £115 and you get all the prescriptions you need for that year, we could do something like that for those that can afford it. I am not sure how much it would cost to administer, but they seem to manage it with the winter fuel allowance. I would be surprised if people can't afford 40p? Maybe I am out of touch but are you suggesting people can't afford 40p these days?

I can see the benefits of someone who goes through that many in a day to get these on prescription, I was meaning the prescription of some low clinical value drugs on a one off basis. As you say a shop would only sell you two packets a day which is what your wife must go through.

Seems to work in dentistry in Scotland where you are exempt from charges if you are in receipt of certain benefits. Maybe it has been looked at and not deemed cost effective, but £1.6BN and rising is a big sum of money where potentially some could be diverted elsewhere if they could make it work. I used to have one of those cards in Scotland pre SNP Government. I'm fairly sure it was managed centrally and you could use it in any pharmacy. May have been bought in a pharmacy but struggling to remember as we have been fortunate to have had free scripts for a long time now. I would have no issue paying for that service again if it was £115 a year but I think sorting tax out into a progressive system is a much better option. To do that you have to make it progressive for the ultra rich first as they pay far too small a share

The big story is the revision upwards of the numbers up till June 2023, UK had a net migration of 906,000. Well over 2 million more people in 3 years and a 3% increase in the population.

That would be fantastic if housebuilding was miniscule and all services hadn't faced cuts in that time rather than expand at the same rate. Baffling that some people don't want an increase to housebuilding and energy generation.

This is why reform are on the rise. Immigration is good but if you don't cater for them services suffer, that won't be felt on Kensington but it will outside the city areas which have financial growth

It's of no surprise to me the numbers are so high, my work has employed about 100 people on my floor in the last year or so, the overwhelmingly vast majority of people who have gotten the jobs are Indian, the jobs on offer are decent enough jobs but nothing you should need to go out the country to fill especially in Edinburgh

Get why my work have done it though, they have likely secured University Educated employees at a new starters salary

As you say immigration is good and needed in Scotland especially, but the infrastructure needs to keep pace with it which I have zero confidence in any of the parties to do

Are you sure they weren't already here?

I think Edinburgh has a huge Indian immigrant population. In our section of our street, out of 17 houses you have us who are Scottish, our next door neighbours who are Chinese immigrants, their next door neighbours who are Scottish and the two houses across from them, one Scottish and one Chinese immigrants. I think the house at the end is Scottish. The rest (11 households) are Indian immigrants.

I've spoken to a few and they came specifically for the job, must have obviously had a visa sorted out beforehand or as part of it.

I have no issues with them whatsoever just seemed weird that such a high percentage of them are from one place

Being from Leith I'm used to lots of Indian people being about and have lots of pals who are 2nd or 3rd generation, but most of them have thicker Leith accents than me

They're reforming the old band, one last tour of the conservative clubs and selected tea rooms before winding the band up and joining Reform.

Bozo is coming back on drums. Guest appearance by Theresa Coffey as a big bass drum.

I’m currently seeing a girl who is an Indian IT professional that came across on a skilled worker visa. The amount of graft Indian IT contractors do for UK companies is unreal. Their employer (Tata, Cognizant, etc) have expectations that they be online 12 or 13 hours a day.

Are there UK people that could do these IT Engineering jobs? Possibly… but we don’t have the numbers needed just now to fill all the vacancies. Also hiring Indians on contracts who have the skills needed is just cheaper and more flexible for Financial Services companies.

Was there a time what that wasn't the case? Outside of a brief spell when a large number of people came from Poland, it's been pretty much the same for the last forty (plus) years.

More recently, India made a very clever decision to encourage people to take up careers in Software Development, and that now accounts for a pretty large percentage of Indians who now move to other countries for work reasons.

The quality of the defectors is not at issue (Lee Anderson, Andrea Jenkyns) but each defection gets plenty of media coverage and the ability of current potential Tory leaders is also not at issue (Kemi Badenoch, Robert Jenrick). Farage is still getting personal advertising on the BBC's 'flagship' current affairs programme. It's getting harder to see how Farage won't be leader of the largest right wing party quite soon.

Good to hear Jenrick attempting to bluster his way through an interview with Nick Robinson last night.

Couldn't or wouldn't answer why it was that on a basic search of Hansard - based on the words grooming and Jenrick - Robinson couldn't find any questions, statements or even sentences on the subject that he had ever raised on the subject whilst he was in parliament.

Given his apparent concerns it's a surprise, or has he just been late in getting on the bandwagon and found out again?

I disagree, Starmer came across as dignified today and his speech the other day denouncing those who use victims of sexual abuse for their own personal vendetta.

The fact Stephen Flynn commended him today - someone who clearly doesn't agree with much Starmer has to say - speaks volumes.

The issue is I have no idea how you counteract what's been happening. There are chunks of people for whom the truth will never matter - but I still think that putting forward the truth in a dignified manner is probably the best course of action.

If you start banning Twitter or giving too much oxygen to the likes of them, you create martyrs.

I’ve simply lost faith in the human race around the world.

If they’re going to continue to make such appalling choices, they’re going to have to endure the suffering those choices inevitably lead to until they learn to choose better.

If they still remain allowed to choose, that is.

The winner didn't really have any policy or pathway to making peoples lives better either though, did he? :dunno: What he certainly had was an effective four word slogan, Make America Great Again, and the lie, repeated over and over, that his opponents were ruining America. Biden got beat because he was the incumbent. As said before on here for the first time since a record of this began over 100 years ago every incumbent in a nation parlgov tracks losts heavily compared to their previous election. When I said it a few months ago I said bet your house on Trudaeu and Scholz falling next as incumbents, one down one almost.

Mass inflation has destroyed all incumbents vote share. No party from any nation could say vote for us again when people have lived through he'll with them. People were better of financially from the beginning to the end of trumps reign due to wages rising above inflation his whole term. Under Biden wages were bellow inflation every month of his term so people were poorer. Prices went through the roof for food, petrol and heating bills. It wasn't his fault as the whole world saw post pandemic huge inflation but that's not an easy sell

She certainly has and had one, from cheesegate to geographygate before the Nasty Raving Looney party thought she could be a leader and just when a bigger comedy seemed unlikely her and Kwakers actually managed to crash the economy.

Admittedly Kwakers might have known what he was up to since his donor and former employer did make rather a lot of money from said crash.

Crashing the economy certainly seemed to have happened at a very specific time as a result of very specific decisions made by very specific people.

She could always have decided not to resign and stayed around long enough to preside over a booming successful economy[emoji23][emoji23]

Labour seem happy to just let it all happen. They’ll regret that. They bare no responsibility for any of this but in the minds of many voters they are now linked with rape gangs. If they don’t regulate social media soon then this will get a lot worse for them. No lie will be too much.

I’m afraid Labour are perennially guilty of fighting the previous battle instead of the one in front of them.

I was at a pre-election meeting where they proudly talked through their strategy for Facebook referencing its use in the Brexit vote. Someone asked why they were focused on Facebook when the right had moved on to Tiktok and other media. No answer!

Facebook’s for your granny, as one young person told me.

Interesting that he actually used the local tory party to launder the money. Surely that was signed off by auditors etc? Does misuse of party funds (alleged in another High profile case but absolutely done in this case) not demand blue tents, the Met involved, high profile reporters following him about, personal effects removed with TV cameras about, tea bags seized etc etc.

Madness indeed, using the Trump playbook to cling on to relevance.

The reason we have such ridiculous energy prices is because we are tied to energy production from gas. Change the system of pricing, not the system of production and our bills will be less. We're the only country in Europe that does this.

While those energy prices remain high then why wouldn’t she do it? It’s a smart play. Labour aren’t going to fix it, they’ve been bought by the energy companies. They’ll no doubt start talking up GB energy again for Scottish elections and we’ll all fall for it again. But until the UK public stop paying 3 and 4 times what other euro countries are paying for energy then it’s wide open for a populist.
In the 9 months since Labour got elected, is there one single thing you could say they have done that will bring energy prices down?

Now that guilt has been established, he can be chased under Proceeds of Crime legislation.

HMRC might also take him to Court, although I'm not sure who has preference.

I just read an article that said it could take 20 years to fully implement GB Energy, so no I don't believe they have.

Still doesn't stop me from feeling she's playing pathetic, populist politics.

If we start fracking will the gas price come down? I don't think it will. It will stay high through some mechanism or other and energy companies will continue their profiteering practices.
