I see they have set up an internal investigation into the party last year. This will allow them to use the classic line “I don’t want to prejudice an ongoing enquiry” and dodge any questions on this. You’ve got to hand it to them, it’s textbook stuff, the enquiry will exonerate everyone and all will be forgotten.

All this talk of ‘gatherings’ instead of ‘parties’ makes me chuckle.
A few years ago we went away for the weekend and left our 18yo at home alone, with the strict instruction that there was to be No Parties. She agreed. Came back on the Monday to broken light fittings, smashed bathroom sink, fagburns on the carpet. She said ‘but it wasn’t a party, it was a ‘gathering’.
Maybe she’s running an ‘excuses school’ and has influenced the government 8 years later :dunno:

It's definitely Raaabian misogyny, as Johnson discriminated against Doyle by accepting Stratton's resignation and not Doyle's. Misogyny in Dorries's sense, where a man does something she doesn't like, hasn't occurred because she likes everything that Johnson does.

quite astonishing the level Tory politicians will stoop to for money Tory MP needing ‘to pay school fees’ pleaded for lucrative Middle East work | Conservatives | The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/dec/15/tory-mp-daniel-kawczynski-fixer-job-with-saudi-contacts-school-fees?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other) Tory politicians truly are total dirtbags, and fools actually vote them in to allow them those opportunities
A Conservative MP pleaded with a fixer to help him secure a well-paid second job with a Saudi company or other work relating to the Middle East, at one point saying he needed money to pay school fees.
Daniel Kawczynski’s repeated pleas for lucrative employment – revealed in a series of WhatsApp messages seen by the Guardian – show him citing his pro-Saudi stance in parliament as part of an attempt to get paid work from a businessman.
Kawczynski arranged to host one potential Saudi employer in parliament, offering him a tour of the House of Commons and a dinner in the MPs’ private dining room. He also arranged to meet the fixer in his parliamentary office to discuss a project.

Just imagine how current Tory MPs in much more marginal seats must be feeling now. The party is ruthless when it comes to potential election defeats; even Thatcher learned that lesson. Johnson must be expecting a leadership challenge soon; there will be numerous plotters against him now.

It's a bit of a double edged sword.
On the one hand I can't think of many worse to lead us through a rocky couple of months. When we need decisive action, we will get dither, delay and u turns.
The flip side is the best opportunity to get rid of the Tories at the next election is with Johnson still in the hot seat. It seems the middle ground, small c conservatives are starting to come to their senses and have realised the joke has ceased to be funny. If he goes they might rustle up someone competent from somewhere.
The last part could be a long shot though. Rory Stewart would have frightened me but he's long gone. Sunak retains a bit of popularity due to furlough and so on. However the rest are just a **** show. Truss is as big a flip flopper as Johnson, Raab has all the charm and charisma of a lamp post, I don't believe that anyone could name a single redeeming feature Gove has and Harold Shipman would score higher in an empathy test than Patel.

I think that is Boris gone, but I suspect Sunak will be in and there poll numbers will rebound. I also think he'll do a much better job of at least appearing competent than Boris. That, combined with the fact that Labour still seem to be struggling in the polls mean Tory governments aren't going anywhere.

Maybe not the cleverest statement to say out loud that your candidate got in on a least-worst ticket rather than people voted for what was being campaigned. Farron is a bit of an Alan Partridge politician and Ed Davey will do well to keep him on the fringes of any recovery. I don't see this result as any more than a vote against rather than a vote for. The Orange Book Liberals are old style wet Tories , so it will be interesting to see the strategy that they use to try and build on this.

Hopefully our NHS up here is shielded in the event it happens.Unfortunately it's not fully protected, if Westminster move some of the provision to privately funded then they can reduce direct NHS funding in England, this in turn means that the other three devolved governments receive less in the Barnet consequentials.

The question is who is behind it and why? With the exception of the Express even the right wing press are pushing the anti Johnson rhetoric now and want him gone. That's worrying as they won't want some cuddly type moving them back towards the centre as his replacement.

It's just being drip fed at the moment. Scandal, uproar, starts to calm down, boom! New picture or revelation. It's evidently being done in this way to keep the pressure on and keep him guessing. He can't lie his way out of it because he doesn't know what they do or don't have access to next.
The question is who is behind it and why? With the exception of the Express even the right wing press are pushing the anti Johnson rhetoric now and want him gone. That's worrying as they won't want some cuddly type moving them back towards the centre as his replacement.
The new leader will be ultra-libertarian zero restrictions. They better hope another variant doesn't come along.

The answer is the Tory party itself, or the forces that operate with the same interest of maximising gains for the City of London and the top 2%. Which is why the clownish one's demise isn't really anything to celebrate, there will just be a new sheriff in town shortly.

Clearly the fact check rebuttal was about more dramatic claims about her saying something specific about it not being her concern, but that interview is bad enough.

it's the foodbank photoshoots that really get me, always appear to be smiling 'customers' when the Tory politicians do their PR shoots, Tory politicians must p@ss themselves laughing at the local wine and cheese meetings with how gullible the working class public is, i cringe that these customers are either too thick to realise or just don't care that the 5th/6th richest world economy has over 1k foodbanks in the damn first place, started by a labour government i believe though the Tories took the amount to disgraceful levels, and they're proud of that

A UK government spokesperson said: “We are delivering on the people’s priorities through record investment in issues that make a difference to people and their families as we continue to tackle the spread of Covid 19 and build back better from the pandemic.
“All contracts awarded during the pandemic were done so in line with procurement regulations and all government spending is routinely published - ensuring value for money for hard working taxpayers and full transparency for scrutiny.”
You just know, come the time, all this will be shown to be a pack of porkers.

“All contracts awarded during the pandemic were done so in line with procurement regulations and all government spending is routinely published - ensuring value for money for hard working taxpayers and full transparency for scrutiny.”
You have to remember that the usual procurement regulations were suspended (through a Parliamentary vote) because of the pandemic, and so it’s pretty easy to say regulations were followed when there weren’t actually regulations in place.
The transparency and scrutiny spiel afterwards actually means nothing, because even if it was dodgy (and you won’t be allowed to use the word dodgy in Parliament) no regulations would have been broken and therefore no case to answer.
That’s why this spiel will be rolled out, rather than actually addressing the specifics.

The question set seemed more straightforward re Westminster government performance but agree that the structure of the question is often crucial.

Won't the public disapproval for the handling of immigration include large numbers of people appalled by Patel's approach, as well as the let-'em-drown crowd? Without breakdown it's not clear which attitude's dominant.

Do all these ****s that sit in the House of Commons genuinely get paid thousands to chortle, mumble and shout over anyone that isn’t in the Conservative party, and laugh ridiculously as Boris tries to shrug off his incompetence with his crap jokes?

De Pfeffel's repeated insistence of him and Ian Blackford getting on really well outwith the chamber is truly bizarre. Is that the case or is he using his own popularity to try and dampen the popularity of the SNP in Scotland?
It's really, really ****ing weird.

Found that a strange and unlikely one too - was hoping Mr Blackford would stand up and give it “nah mate, I think you’re a complete knob inside and outside of here”… alas.

Just part of the push to restore the glories of the 1950s. Not sure it was compulsory then to stand up in your own home while it played, but it could be now. Large fines, citizenship-stripping or deportation for non-compliance.

Funny that this should come up. We had a conversation with both sets of parents over the holiday period who said that they used to play the national anthem at the end of the day on TV and at the end of a film in the cinema. They said it was a rush at the end of the film to get out before the anthem came on as you were expected to stand and salute for the duration.
My mum said that as my grandad was ex-military, her and her siblings were made to actually stand and salute when it came on the TV

The Conservative party are all about knowing your place, doffed caps and tugged forelocks. The vast majority of people can see right through him as an overprivileged idiotic man child born into extreme privilege but that sort of **** plays so well in their party that he has enough of a following who think he's brilliant.

I can remember that and I am not that old !
this also reminded me of a time when my best mates family invited me and my wife to be to a function at the masons. My mates dad thought he was something big in the local lodge. I was too young and naive to know what it was all about
Anyway, sit down meal with loads of people crowded in and it was pretty stuff and so I took my jacket off. SILENCE BROKE OUT IMMEDIATELY. my mate hisses get your jacket on we haven’t toasted the queen yet. I put my jacket on and the incident was forgotten
After the meal I then became under intense pressure to join up and was told it was easy as long as I swore allegiance to the queen and believed in god. I was too scared to say I couldn’t fulfil either criteria and was glad when I was able to leave

That IS a good read. The one thing it needs is to point out the eye watering wealth that the RMs were and are swimming around in. Understanding the fathers ideology is definitely important, but a lot of it bypasses ideology and is down to base financial self interest. He’d be a pro European if he thought it would improve his personal bottom line.

That's the Ireland that seems to be part of Europe.
Obviously its officially nothing to do with brexit at all and suitably worded explanations followed.

I was once in a big republican bar in Ireland and there were a load of Gypsy lads in playing pool and having a drink. At the end of the night when the Irish national anthem came on, the gypsy lads carried on playing pool and didn’t pay any attention to it. It wasn’t pretty afterwards.[emoji51]

I was a serving soldier back then, can't remember ever having to stand for gstq. I did take her shilling though but had my fingers crossed at the oath of allegiance.
To be fair I have been known to belt out "away doon at Gorgie" in a drunken stupor, you can blame my Hearts supporting mother for that.
