This lying Tory Government has been a ****ing disaster for this country.

Scotlands third highest politican getting caught lying to the public and fiddling expenses is massive news in Scotland rightly. Its only been in the news day after day because he's dragging it out telling more lies daily. If he admitted he made a mistake last year and paid it himself he'd probably get sympathy and it wouldn't be a story.

It's not a main story in England because the tories have been getting hammered for a week about Rwanda.

As for increasing sanctions for people who lose their benefits rights after refusing a job for 18 months, I'd bet it would get support up here from the public. There's nothing wrong with getting people to get back into work the problem is the tories do it disgusting time after time, punishing people who can't physically or mentally work for example

It obviously goes without saying removing free prescription for poor people is barbaric and stupid because it will cost you more. It won't happen though. The only getting sick lines from the brew will I think though

There has been quite a lot of coverage of this story in England.

It may be a relatively trivial sum but it’s relatable and speaks to the cynical view that all politicians are on the take. Many people including me have been caught out by high roaming charges on holiday. Few of them try to get their employers to cover the bill.

As is so often the way, the attempted cover up becomes worse than the initial wrongdoing.

He’s an idiot and no amount of complaining about media bias (although justified) gets him off the hook.

They're just not very intelligent but rely on their support being even more dense or just nasty. That gimp Frost was on TV this morning telling us that we need to treat immigrants harder like some of our European neighbours do and in the same breath saying it's inherited EU law that's stopping us doing so. And their morons that vote for them either can't see through the bull**** or lap it up. I ****ing hate Tory voters.

Due to economy doing better than expected (due to inflation falling which is nothing to do with them) there is apparently £20 billion headroom. What do they do with the unexpected cash, you'd think put it to NHS waiting times or the increase in child poverty no? No tax cut to the rich in inheritance tax and high tax rates.

We've shown we can protest in the UK so why are we silent on this, ******g evil. SNP don't get enough credit for the increase in child benefit which directly goes to those most in need

Fifteen government departments have been monitoring the social media activity of potential critics and compiling “secret files” in order to block them from speaking at public events, the Observer can reveal.

Under the guidelines issued in each department, including the departments of health, culture, media and sport, and environment, food and rural affairs, officials are advised to check experts’ Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn accounts. They are also told to conduct Google searches on those individuals, using specific terms such as “criticism of government or prime minister”.

It's like the great rock and roll swindle, only that swindle was thought up after the fact and the alleged perp walked away with zilch. This one is broad daylight. Charity run by husband of Tory peer to shut down - TFN (https://tfn.scot/news/charity-run-by-husband-of-tory-peer-to-shut-down)

The Barrowman Foundation’s accounts could remain unpublished.
A charity run by the husband of a Scottish Tory peer has been shut down and its account will remain a mystery.
The Barrowman Foundation, run by Baroness Michelle Mone's husband Doug Barrowman, is to be dissolved and remains late with its accounts for last year.
The Sunday Mail has reported that the Foundation (https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/michelle-mones-husbands-charity-shuts-31472669) is being dissolved days after watchdogs found faults in its operations after a 14-month inquiry.

Stop the boats and the hundreds of migrants the tories shout and then let in mass migration never seen before in the UK.

Wow net migration last year 672,000, the year before revised up to 745,000

1,417,000 more people living in Britain than 2 years previous. Pretty extraordinary levels of immigration which is great, although the tories might not like being known as the party of immigration

But Mr Anderson, the deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, told GB News: “So the generation that fixed the problems in Europe was my grandad’s generation.

“He put a British Army uniform on … he went to fight the Nazis, he went all across North Africa, through Sicily, through Italy, seen some horrible things. That was the generation that fixed the problems in Europe. She [Ursula von der Leyen] needs to shut up.”

Asked if he believed the UK will rejoin the EU in his lifetime, he said: “I hope not because if we do I’m moving to Orkney isles.”

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GAMpcMBXcAAsDJO?format=jpg&name=mediumMore or less what he was after?

Finally found some non UK nation the daily mail can froth about and whip their 100,000 readers into a frenzy about.

Not far away from having to address some real issues so any deflection will do?

I'm aware these impacts will be far reaching, but this means not a single postdoctoral researcher/scientist in the UK will be able to come from overseas under these new rules. An expert in their chosen field, with a PhD, will not be able to get a job at a UK institution unless they're into senior lecturer territory (as even entry level lectureships are less than £38k at many institutions).

It's worth noting that the 742,000 figure is net migration so it's more like 1.3 - 1.4m visas granted as nearly 600k left the UK. That's just crazy numbers considering the state of the NHS and house building in this country, it also makes you wonder how stringent the checks are to be able to push through that many applications. It also puts into perspective what a load of bull this so called "small boats crisis" really is.

Not disagreeing at all bud, on re-reading my post it looks like I'm just complaining about the numbers which I suppose I am but really I'm complaining about the lack of impact these numbers are making on the problems the country is facing. I'd of liked nothing more than those 1.4m people coming in to be nurses, doctors, care workers etc and their families but they don't seem to be effecting the vacancies needing filled which suggests the system in place aint working. If we can attract that number of people every year then we should see vacancies falling in the NHS for example. I've no problem with 4m people coming in and say 750k of them with experience in health or other experiences that we need and I don't see why setting up a system that allows that would be that hard.

Tories say this will drop net migration by 300k to sit at 300k net increase per year. Its utterly stupid. Immigrants are net contributers on average are young and have larger families.

The problem is obviously we don't use the bounty from immigration to build houses and increase services, but that's Tories to a tee

I decided to have a quick look for PDRA jobs across Scotland after you posted that, as I was curious as to how reflective it was - I'm quite far past PDRA level these days so I haven't kept tabs on what payscales look like, but this is Scotland:

Glasgow: £32,868
Strathclyde: £31,396
Aberdeen: avg.£36,542 (no jobs being advertised and the link to their payscale doesn't work - range taken from Indeed).
Dundee: £36,024
St Andrews: £37,099 (must use same payscale as you guys?)
Heriot Watt: £36,023
GCU: £32,236
UHI: (I think postdocs here are rare, but their lectureships start at £35,170)
UWS: £32,332

Then you have the 'prestigious' Oxbridge scholarship offerings, where you get a reduced salary in lieu of food and board - I seen one being advertised the other day at £27k. No international applicant is going to be able to take up those roles moving forward.

So isn't it fantastic - we can now apply for Horizon Grants again, but (most of us) won't be able to recruit overseas PDRAs to work on them!

Apologies to everyone else on this thread - this is quite a specific tangent/side-chat!

It's a weird hill for them to die on.

Rwanda scheme's never going to work or even happen, but UKGov has perhaps inadvertently hit on a very important principle here, namely ignoring or abolishing internationally accepted laws if they don't suit the people of Britain, and remaking our laws to suit us rather than allow foreign courts to decide what's right and what's wrong. Putting it in to law that Rwanda is safe is a good start, and the few hundred million pounds that that's costing will be as nothing compared to what we'll be able to save going forward. The cost of phasing out gas boilers, for example, is projected to be enormous. But we can simply change the laws of chemistry so that we don't need to do any of that green crap. How ‘securely’ does it need to be stored? It’s not running away anywhere, and if it’s substandard, it’s unlikely to be stolen, so why does it cost that much?

Hopefully for the upcoming court cases as evidence.

I wasn’t suggesting just dumping it, I was referring to the cost of storing it being so expensive

I’m sure there actually will be uses for it that won’t need to be at the covid transmission standards, which also begs the question why it’s being stored rather than sold on for other uses (apart from the reason above re. evidence)

Appreciate you may be using a bit of artistic licence with the language, but it sounds as if you might be saying that the money can't be recovered because it's been put in/passed through a bank. Also appreciate Labour may be using a bit of artistic licence with the word 'will' but they've said that they will pursue recovery.

Parliament's Standards Commissioner finds that suspended Conservative MP Scott Benton:

In his interview with the Standards Commissioner, Scott Benton said he couldn’t think clearly as the sting took place in a noisy and distracting environment.

If you follow their logic they couldn't really do crowd funding as they wouldn't be able to put their name to it as it's not how the husband says he does business - at least until the evidence overwhelmingly exposes the original lie - maybe a quick word with Michael Gove again will help them out.

But no, it was met with the usual bluster and denial from her and her husband.

Now though we're to ignore the years of lying, and believe all is above board as they've been having a few nasty people on the Internet say mean things to them whilst they sip champagne on their yacht?

If there is even a sliver of justice in the world they will spend a long time behind bars. Somehow I doubt that though.

Michael Gove and Sir Chris Wormald approved the purchase of 5 years supply of PPE when the remit was to build up only 4 months. They oversaw huge waste in PPE contracts. They have both had questions to answer for a very long time.

MICHELLE Mone is being sued by The New European in an effort to recover "thousands of pounds" the publisher spent responding to threats over its reporting of the PPE Medpro scandal.

The Good Law Project and the newspaper have instructed solicitors and Counsel and expect to begin the case against Mone early in the new year.
A spokesperson said this action was "highly unusual", but added that it was "necessary to put those making baseless defamation claims on notice".
They added: "High net worth individuals cannot be given a free hit against campaigners or media organisations.

The New European and Good Law Project believe the Guardian, The Mirror, Byline Times, The National, Tortoise – and a number of freelance reporters – have also spent time, money or both dealing with defamation threats connected to their reporting of PPE Medpro.

More from Carol Vorderman and the Good Law Project on the VIP lane / PPE scandal.

https://x.com/carolvorders/status/1737822114927804806?s=20

🔹In 2020, Tory peer Lord Chadlington referred a company SG Recruitment, with no PPE experience, to the VIP lane.
🔹He sent his referral to Lord Feldman, another Tory peer.
🔹Chadlington was a director and shareholder of SG Recruitment's parent company Sumner Group Holdings, based offshore in Jersey.
🔹SG Recruitment was then, through the VIP Lane, handed contracts worth £50 MILLION.
🔹The average price for a PPE gowns across all contracts was £5.87, SG Recruitment gowns cost NEARLY TWICE AS MUCH at a whopping £11.87.
🔹On top of that, more than half of the PPE the company supplied was useless.
🔹The Dept of Health and Social care is now engaged in “ongoing commercially confidential discussions” with SG Recruitment.
🔹But the parent company has been wound up, making it unlikely that any of this wasted money will be recovered.

Maybe not a huge issue as another Health Secretary will probably be along shortly.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231221/967e475fd8dd28f65d349ceeaa3ba54b.jpg

Well to be fair it isn't a Christian holiday, it is a Pagan festival which the Christians latched onto, similar to Easter. Yule festival or everlasting life is a time to reflect on renewal and transformation with the shortest day and longest night and the rebirth of a new sun.
