Nadine Dorries didn't declare a penny in earnings for a year in TV second job - Mirror Online (https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/nadine-dorries-didnt-declare-penny-30849689)
Nadine Dorries was tonight accused of being “offensive” to voters by failing to declare any cash she pocketed from her second job as a TV presenter.
The ex-Tory MP didn’t declare a single penny in earnings from nearly a year of presenting a high profile TV show - while largely absent from her day job as an MP.
She continued to employ her daughter on a taxpayer-funded salary of up to £49,000, despite her living two hours travel from both Ms Dorries constituency and from Parliament.
And in more than a year of absence from Parliament, research shows Ms Dorries sent a member of staff on the train several times a month to pick up her post in Westminster - at a cost of almost £30 a time.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/home-office-visa-deportation-nigeria-b2407090.html
The Home Office (https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/home-office) told a five-year-old girl she must leave the UK immediately but allowed her mother to stay while she fights her own deportation.
The mother, from Nigeria, has lived in the UK for 19 years since the age of 16 and applied for leave to remain in the UK permanently on the grounds she has built a network of friends and family here.
The application was refused but while she was allowed to stay in the country to challenge the decision, she was told her daughter, who was born here and has never visited Nigeria, must go.

At the 2023 G20 Summit in New Delhi, India, President Biden and Prime Minister Modi co-hosted a group of G20 leaders to accelerate investments to scale high-quality infrastructure projects and the development of economic corridors through the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGI).
The meeting of the leaders from the United States, European Union (EU), France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mauritius, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and the World Bank demonstrated the collective urgency to make meaningful progress in narrowing the infrastructure gap in low- and middle-income countries to enable inclusive and sustainable growth and promote economic activity and prosperity.

How is this even possible or legal?! Surely if the child was born here she is a UK citizen?Haha, as if mate - you underestimate the sheer cruelty of the UK immigration policy
I've told this story before but we had our child in nz
The rule states clearly if your child was born overseas to 1 parent (the dad used to be excluded from this until about 20/30 years ago) that was born in the Uk with parents both born in the UK your child is British by birth
Well that was our child - I'm born in UK to parents who were born in the Uk - no problem right
Wrong
After much delay and back and forth awaiting on our daughters passport so we could move here and not include her on my wife's visa application :
Turns out as my wife is Filipino part of the documentation they requires was called a CENOMAR
It's fairly unique to the Philippines as it's a certificate of no marriage. Yes, a document to prove my wife hasn't been married before
I ended up losing the rag at the home office to get an explanation as to why we now need to request a document that might take 6 weeks to get from the Philippines
Why does it matter if my now wife has been married before - I meet all your stipulations
Well turns out that as the Philippines does not recognize divorce if my wife had been married before the UK government would recognize our daughters father as the initial husband!
Not the biological father who's named on the birth certificate but a random person they could've married at 17 or something
That's the lengths the UK govt will go to try and exclude folk coming here - taking a religious law of a third world county and applying it to there own immigration policy

Haha, as if mate - you underestimate the sheer cruelty of the UK immigration policy

I had similar problems getting a UK passport for my boy who was born in Germany. I had months of being told that nationality is determined by the nationality of the mother and the father's nationality is irrelevant. It's bull**** of course but it's what I heard several times from the passport authorities from different sources. It's almost like a memo went round telling officers to firstly just try and palm people off.

How is this even possible or legal?! Surely if the child was born here she is a UK citizen?
UK immigration is mental, one of my pals is Scottish and was born here, his wife is American, she went to uni here and got her degree and was a primary school teacher, she applied for her permenant right to remain on the back of marrying a UK citizen and having a job that is widely needed
It got turned down and when her visa ran out she basically got booted out the country for a year, she was in the states and my pal was still here trying to get it sorted, took about 2 appeals, the local MP getting involved and some kind of petition being signed by thousands
What it got turned down for was that my pal had recently went self employed so couldn't prove his last 3 years worth of self employed income, didn't matter that his wife had a well paying job in an industry crying out for staff
End up costing them thousands in applications, lawyers fees and a couple of years stress and hassle to finally get it resolved

What exactly are this govt (in power for 13 years) actually doing?
They have pissed away all the money, much of it on themselves and cronies. We don’t have a workable EU arrangement, we have zero tech big business and are not attractive to invest in as a country (incentives), we have lost car manufacturing, the LSE has been marginalized and not seen as the major player it was before. We won’t let people come here to fill skills gaps and capacity issues on jobs lazy ass Brit’s won’t do. We have the chance to lead the way on wind, solar etc but just seen a report saying England hasn’t build a new offshore wind farm due shambolic bid process and they pander to the toxic right who don’t want wind farms on shore. Only two of the top 50 companies in the world are UK - Shell and astra zeneca - 46th and 47th.
Johnson clearly banked on Russian money (constrained with Ukraine conflict now) and a US deal with Trump (never happening now).
So what do we have that makes us even close to being global Britain? What do we have to offer? We don’t even have the money to subsidize new sectors eg tech and we can’t even make our terrible Brexit decision workable.

If you were paranoid enough you might imagine that it's because climate change will see the UK goosed anyway but its not so paranoid when that is exactly what is detailed in one their revered text books, "The Sovereign Individual".
Why invest when the country is knackered and you have handy distractions like the Royal Family and racism 'n stuff? Investment would only enable the proles and none of them want that, despite the lies they spill.

I’ve no idea what their standing before was, and not saying they didn’t do a great job during the pandemic, just that even them being in the top 50 shouldn’t be a positive reflection of the uk govt

Your right. COVID drove that massive rise up the table. It’s at time like now I wish we did have a credible plan, proper leaders and the real financial basis to become an independent country. The Brexit, the racism, the underfunding, the corruption, the toxic media, the royal family, the old school political system are all driven from out of Scotland. And labour are lining up austerity 2 which will finish people off even if they show less corruption and provide better actual government.

NEW: we need to talk about the dire state of British transport infrastructure.
Of the 52 UK cities with 250k+ people, only 8 (15%) have a tram or metro.
In France & Germany it’s 80%, Poland is on 60%.

The income gap between Londoners and the rest of the UK population has hit a record high, according to the latest statistics that reveal the challenges facing the government in implementing its flagship “levelling up” agenda.
On average, households in the capital had £31,094 available per head to spend or save in 2021, 43 per cent above the national average of £21,679, according to data published by the Office for National Statistics on Thursday. This is the biggest gap since records began in 1997.

This post relates to spend on children's services in England. But it tells quite a story.
Spending on late intervention now accounts for 80% of all children's services spending, while early intervention spend is down by almost half
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F6DjA6tXwAIgVEw?format=jpg&name=large
What's that late intervention spend going on? Well, 78% of new intervention spend is going on services for children in care. This is driven in particular by the 79% increase in numbers of children entering residential care compared to 2010-11
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F6DlLkWXwAUIKS2?format=webp&name=medium
£9 of every £10 of additional children's residential care spend since 2010-11 has gone to private sector providers. CMA says the largest of these "are making materially higher profits & charging materially higher prices, than we would expect if this market functioned effectively"

Suella Braverman has some explaining to do. Last weekend a notorious Spanish neo-nazi, Isabel Peralta, was allowed into the UK to speak at a nazi gathering in Preston. She is banned from entering Germany because of her extreme views. She was detained at Manchester airport by the UK Border Force but released and allowed to enter the UK to address the annual gathering organised by the neo-Nazi magazine and website, Heritage and Destiny.
But if she is too extreme for Germany, why was she allowed to enter the UK? Over to you, Suella Braverman ...

Not a fan of her at all, but the Laura Kuensberg documentary State of Chaos is very good. Focuses on the government post Brexit with lots of interviews from key figures.
It highlights the main problem with the Tory party - the remain side who by and large are Tory *******s but at least principled at least, and the likes of Dorries, Truss, Gove, Johnson, Kwarteng, Baker, Rees-Mogg who are just the lowest of the low. Desperate to play the victim too.

All her policies would have worked out if the lefty international world of finance hadn't introduced their 'moron premium' on Britain's finances at approximately the same time as she was PM. Which was pure coincidence.

I think it might. Not because they care but because smoking numbers are falling dramatically, especially amongst the youngsters. From 50% of uk pop to 12% in 50 years. It's not stopping either and its mostly older groups. People are self banning. It'll make politicians look good, it will effect very few but most will be for it.

I don't think it's fair to call this prohibition. Those who can legally smoke now will still be able to. And illegal cigarettes already exist - there is no market being created.
It's a pretty sensible measure imo to speed up a process that as you say, is already happening naturally.
But 13% are still smoking and it's still too easy to get cigarettes. It costs lives and the health service huge money.

I didn't check but I wonder how much all the projects in the article cost? £500m to do 4 miles of the A46?
Something raised in Newsnight last night was that our feast-or-famine way of building these kinds of projects is the massive brain drain during the leaner times.
If HS2 was to be paused for 7 years for example, how much work is there for all the people working on the project?
I don't specifically know how big contractors work, but would they recruit/buy machinery specifically for a project like this?

On the whole value for money issue, shirley the most relevant calculation is How much have Tory donors been paid for their part in HS2? and How much have they given back in donations to the Tory Party?
For example, Jenrick, until he was found out, was all set to benefit Desmond by about £45m and Desmond only donated £12,000. Outstanding value for money from Desmond's point of view.

I know what you're saying, I think people in every niche of the project are lining their pockets. Consultants will be making a fortune on it. Never mind the fact it's costing the tax payer a fortune, to them its a government project and they can charge what they like.
One of these is a bit of Twitter hear-say, but Stanley Johnson apparently made about £2m on his house when it was part of a compulsory purchase as part of HS2.

That's where I stand on it. The culture of grift surrounding large scale projects has always existed but has been refined to the nth degree in this country so the trough is deep and wide and every snout has to be accommodated, completing any project comes a poor second and completing it competently with good value for money just doesn't occur to them.

Scary indeed, the Conservative party is slowly inching it's way further to the Right, and with speeches like that, it becomes clear that those at the top of the Party are quite happy to embrace elements of fascism.
Scary further is that those in attendance at the conference have given her a standing ovation, people are ACCEPTING of it.
I'd hope that there would be some within the Conservative party that would be willing to speak out against such rhetoric, but alas I doubt there are any with such a spine.

So much for levelling up the North of England.

What is it going to take to trigger violent uprising against this increasingly fascist regime?
I honestly though the fuel-bills/energy company profits might be the final straw but listening to some of the output from this 'conference' is really igniting an anger in me I didn't think I had when it comes to politics.
I'm not one to openly advocate for violence on any collective/individual, but if these scenes were playing out in France, the streets would be on fire.
We're beyond parallels and mirrors of Nazi Germany - the subjugation of anyone that doesn't tick specific boxes has reached seriously dystopian levels.

The trap that the Tories are desperate or Labour to fall into is to start a culture war where like in 2019, they can pitch it as "us v them".
Just now, Labour are giving them nothing to create that battle ground, hence the bizarre warblings about "meat taxes" and "no borders". It's pretty much the only way that the Tories may be able to win the next election, is to create the new "Get Brexit Done".
Best thing that Labour can do is to give their words the space to be analysed and ridiculed for what they are, whilst creating the best manifesto that they can for the election next year.

I'm afraid I disagree. Any left wing party worth it's salt should be vocally opposing facisim from the ruling party.
Your comment about words being analysed and ridiculed might work with a tough and fair media. But the Express, Mail, Sun, Times, Telegraph, GB News etc are all right behind the Tories and doing anything but scrutinising them. They are agreeing, normalising and amplifying their words.
Labours silence could easily be construed as tactic support for much of the debate the Tories are creating.
We saw what happened when Labour were weak on opposing Brexit. The facts failed miserably during that campaign and the debate was captured and led by outrageous lies that were allowed to go largely unchecked. I'm not sure repeating the same same mistake again is good politics or right for the country.

I'm not dismissing it, I just already know they are horrible *****. He's obviously OK'd or at least not stopped all his MPs slamming the rhetoric.
Starmer hasn't commented on anything the tories have said yet , he will at the Labour conference I pressume. Talking tactically only then Starmer shouldn't do or say anything whilst they are having a nightmare mind. I think tactically he was probably unwise to say he wants a return policy with the EU and a closer relationship in general
Corbyn has slammed it and his party was left of any uk party. He was ridiculed on here daily as being pointless as being left won't get in power. Starmer has went right of that as they suggested and looks like getting in power, gets slammed too.

Trying my best to be fair :greengrin, but I can't help thinking that "the North" (hate that term) needs £36bn spent on a wider set of projects more than it needs a slightly faster rail link to Birmingham. If (I know, I know ) it is actually spent that way, I think it's the right decision here.

If (I know, I know ) it is actually spent that way, I think it's the right decision here.
The original HS Project involved new or upgraded roads, expanded bus services, extra trams, expanded timetables, HS3 and more.
It was never about just being to shave minutes off a trip to the smoke, although it served the tut-tutters and nimbys to portray it as such.
Some of the "new" "promises" made by our Leader today already existed as part of the full HS Project and some have been cancelled already but are maybe back on again (who knows given they play hokey-cokey with everything.)
Too lazy too look it all up so I asked an AI a couple of questions. First about rail then road and bus...
"Here are some of the projects that are peripheral to the main high-speed HS2 line in the UK:
1. Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR): This project, often referred to as HS3, is designed to improve connectivity and transportation links across the North of England. It aims to enhance connectivity between major cities such as Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, and Liverpool. While it is separate from HS2, NPR is often discussed in conjunction with it as part of a larger plan to improve transport infrastructure in the region.
2. Midlands Connect: Midlands Connect is a program focused on improving connections across the Midlands region of England. It includes various projects to enhance transport links, such as upgrading and expanding rail lines, improving road networks, and enhancing connectivity to major airports. Some of these initiatives are coordinated alongside the planning and development of HS2.
3. East Midlands Hub: As part of HS2, the East Midlands Hub project aims to create a strategic transport interchange near Toton in the East Midlands. It is intended to provide better connectivity for the region and serve as a major transportation hub for HS2 and other rail services, improving connections between Nottingham, Derby, and Leicester.
4. Curzon Street Station: Curzon Street Station is the terminus station for HS2 in Birmingham. It will serve as the main gateway to the city and will be a significant transport interchange for local and regional services. The station is being developed in conjunction with HS2 and will enhance connectivity within Birmingham and the wider West Midlands region.
These are just a few examples of projects that are directly or indirectly connected to HS2 and were planned alongside it to improve connectivity and transportation infrastructure within the UK."
"Here are a few bus and road projects that are connected to or complement the HS2 project in the UK:
1. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Systems: In various areas along the HS2 route, there are plans to develop Bus Rapid Transit systems. These systems will provide dedicated bus lanes and enhanced services to improve public transport connectivity to HS2 stations and surrounding areas. For example, the planned Birmingham Eastside Metro extension will include a BRT system that will connect with HS2 services at Curzon Street Station.
2. Road Network Upgrades: To support the increased demand and improve connectivity, several road network upgrades have been planned alongside HS2. These projects aim to enhance the capacity and efficiency of major roads and junctions near HS2 stations or areas that will experience increased traffic. Examples include improvements to the M42 motorway near Birmingham International Station and the A452 near the Interchange Station in Solihull.
3. Integration with Local Transport Hubs: HS2 will be integrated with existing local transport hubs and road networks to ensure seamless connectivity. This includes plans to upgrade road infrastructure leading to HS2 stations, improve parking facilities, and enhance public transport links to support passengers traveling to and from the stations.
It's important to note that while HS2 primarily focuses on the development of high-speed rail infrastructure, there is also a significant emphasis on coordinating with local transportation networks to ensure comprehensive connectivity and accessibility for passengers using different modes of transport."

Would be even better if it was a decision made locally. The whole country is at the whim of whatever is in fashion in London. Having to go to London for funding for tram services etc is a mad way to run a country. There needs to be some proper devolution in the UK with taxes devolved accordingly.

I disagree. The main point in Hs2 is new rail capacity. Our Victorian lines can't handle more trains as the tories said when announcing hs2. Putting more trains on the Manchester route will increase journey times.
Almost all the other g7 nations seem to be able to add high speed rail with little problem. It also isn't that great a spend spread over the years, infrastructure projects are great for the economy.
Most of all thought its a guaranteed project. The others are just like the new hospitals. The tories probably won't be in power anyway so it's just the scrapping of Hs2 announced they can't do the rest, not that they would have anyway

As there are currently five per hour each way, that will mean 20 trains per hour: one every three minutes.
Rail boffins: can you help me understand how that works?3 storey trains?
Another world beating first from the people who brought £350m a week to the NHS.

Interestingly, if Reform were to stand down and almost all those votes were to go to the Tories, it would be likely that Labour would still have a small majority, even when taking boundary changes into account. Just put that into an electoral seat calculator.

Pretty extraordinary and awful comms. Sunak today confirmed the transport projects shown as replacements for HS2 were for "illustration purposes".
