Jamie MacLaren played at the last one and may well have still be on loan at Hibs at the time.

Don’t think he actually got on the park though.

Was called into the squad at the last minute after he scored a hat trick against Rangers in the 5-5 draw.

I was thinking the same thing and off the top of my head thought it would be John Blackley or Erik Shaedler back in 74.

Thought it was really harsh and unfair to be honest the slagging Cummings has taken from a Australian legend . What was he meant to do against one of the best teams in the world when they were totally out played ?

Who was the ‘Legend’ you refer to?

When did an ex-Hibs player last play at a World Cup, let alone a current one? Not watching the tournament but what a moment for Cummings it must be said.

Why does winning one specific trophy make you the greatest? What about the fact Messi has just won just short of 40 trophies compared to Maradonas 10? Or Messis 800 goals to Maradonas 350ish? Or Messi’s 17 years (and counting) at the absolute pinnacle of football compares to Maradonas 9 or so? Messi’s 4 European Cups to Maradonas 0?

Yet one World Cup, played out over a matter of weeks makes you the best ever?

why does Messi need a world cup medal to put bed he is the best of his era if it is that unimportant? Maradona done more in the game full of the charlie than these two will ever do haha I would have loved to have seen messi at napoli in the 80s getting souness-esque challenges I can assure you he wouldn't have even half of maradonas total goal tally. If I had to pick between a european cup winners medal or a world cup winners medal there is only one winner the world cup is the pinnacle of football mate.

HibeeHibernia
23-11-2022, 05:59 AM
And even that one world cup boils down to two 1 on 1s. Maradonas striker scored, Messis missed. Both against Germany too.

Diego never won the Copa America either. Messi became the first player to get most goals, most assists and best player at a major tournament as he carried Argentina to it.

aye because the copa america is bigger than the world cup right enough mate lol

Go on YouTube and find a Messi getting hacked compilation. Both him and Ronaldo have been subjected to some.horrific career Ender's, often without a red or yellow produced.

To so simply compare the different eras is lazy, the players that Messi has had to deal with are all absolute athletes, bigger, stronger, tactically better and technically superior to the era of Diego.

Maradonna also had major substance ahuse issues and rarely played a full seasons fixtures. He had 1 season in his career where he managed over 30 goals in a season. Messi has had 13.

i can assure they won't be half as bad as what maradona had to endure haha have you seen the souness tackle compilation on youtube? those challenges were standard in the 80s, many a great had to give up the game due to injury because of the challenges players were allowed to get away with then mate. As Paddy stanton always says is doesn't matter what era you played in if you were good then you would be good today, the only thing that has changed today is obviously diet and fitness levels I'm sure these from years ago would have adapted perfectly fine to this modern game, Maradona playing today in this non contact sport we now call football would run riot imo.

Maradona done more in the game than those two will ever do despite the fact that Messi has won 4 times the amount of trophies and scored well over double the goals (and counting) whilst doing it for near enough twice as long. Similar could be said for Ronaldo.

Are Longevity and medals key criteria for greatest of all time ? Is the greatest musician the one who has had the most record sales ?? Or most music awards ?

These are all incredible footballers we are talking about aren’t they ..will deservedly be remembered for eternity likely ..I think it’s valid to put Maradona up there with those very best , even though he didn’t have the same length of career and as much a haul of medals ..because even if the community of wonderful players , he stands aloft with the very best ..

Another four games today, Germany Japan looks the pick of them at 1pm, the Japanese have so many players at top European clubs now, lots of options up front, and I was very impressed with the boy at Frankfurt in the champions league group stages. A definite possibility of an upset. I’d like to get a look at Morocco this morning too but sadly have to work as well.

Of course they are key criteria, there’s not a sport in the world where the greatest players haven’t had a significant amount of longevity and/or honours.

I don’t disagree Maradona is up there. I massively disagree with the idea that Ronaldo and Messi couldn’t lace his boots and have achieved half as much despite the fact they’ve probably achieved twice as much or more by almost every measure. And I massively disagree with the laughable idea that the big bad defenders of the 80s would have put a stop to Messi and Ronaldo.

am i the only one who thinks we have seen very little replays of any potentially controversial incidents in every game so far... as if TV broadcaster who feeds to all nations has been instructed not to... to prevent VAR controversies :dunno:

it is another spoiler of the game as you watch 80 + mins of often soporific play and its the moments like that which make the game interesting ... Loverens potential handball in this game being a case in point... non the wiser as to whether it was hand ball / whether in or outside box.... but 6 replays of a half chance / basic keeper save

Pretty unfair on Cummings as Australia's whole team barely touched the ball last 30 mins and seemed intent on pissing about at the back with it when they did. Not knocking McLaren but don't think he'd have done any better.

Very true and quite perplexing even if an unexpected bonus after watching the farcical rollout of VAR in Scotland.

Even more perplexing is the enormous amount of "injury time" being added in every game. 2nd half of France vs Oz last night there was not a single stoppage and zero time wasting yet the ref added on 8 mins!

If Kalac is a “Legend”..then I am a fully paid up member of both Hearts and Rangers supporters clubs.

The man is a plum.

If anyone knows minging, it’s him….and his 2006 World Cup finals appearance against Croatia was definitely in the minging category.

Minging is not a word used or understood by 90% of Australians, so he obviously was seeking an opportunity to use it well in advance of the game, just for ‘shock’ purposes.

Teams don’t want to lose 1st game - happened last few tournaments group stages can be tame.

Will be interesting what happens when they expand the number of teams at world cups.

Expecting Germany v Japan to have some goals surely.

Also the gap between teams around the world definitely closing - feels like an under dog could go far in this tournament.

Well that’s the pairing broken already; the left back from Bayern stretchered off with what looks like a muscle injury, replaced by a boy who’s never left the Moroccan league.

You have to worry about the smaller countries later in the competition to deal with injuries, a lot of these players have had no rest in mid season.

No, I think the quality is higher than ever, much like near enough all other sports. Watching clips of older football compared to modern football is night and day. The pace players play at now is obscene compared to years gone by. Technique wise they’re lightyears ahead now imo.

Pele is poorer than Messi and Ronaldo statistically. He won significantly less trophies than Messi and slightly less than Ronaldo and scored less goals than both.

I thought it as a dive as well so play should have stopped at that point. The ref obviously decided the German player had committed no offence though so given it’s a subjective decision I’m not so sure VAR applies.

Surprising because he doesn’t always get a game for Eintracht Frankfurt. The German pundit I was listening to who’s name escapes me was saying he’s considered well past his best despite only being 30.

France will beat them in the last 8.

I’m not suggesting that England will win …… just that they will be gaining confidence and enjoying watching favoured teams struggling. I’m surprised that none of the English pundits/commentators have ventured to suggest this. Maybe they’ve learned a lesson and don’t want to put the monkey’s curse on them. Another couple of surprise results will see them not being able to contain themselves and it’ll be full-on ‘football’s coming home’. :greengrin

I do wonder if some of these traditional bigger nations will get better as the tournament progresses.

They usually have 3-4 weeks and a friendly or 2 in the build up to a summer WC. This year they were playing league games a week or 10 days ago (I know the same is true of a lot of the 'smaller' teams but they don't have the same expectation). A wee bit lingering fatigue from a hectic schedule and rustiness from not having played together recently might be a factor. Some of the outsiders might have fancied the 1st round of games as being their best chance of getting something.

That Onana chappie doesn't look like he's the sharpest tack on the board.

He’s having a shocker

Seen him a few times for Everton and he looked miles out his league.

Canada have been exceptional in the first 3/4 of the pitch, utter rank anywhere near the box.

Didn’t realise he played in the PL. Hope for us all yet

Its pretty comical how bad Belgium are, and have been under Martinez bar one or two spells of decent results. They've got a team that should be right up there competing, instead they'll probably get knocked out in the first knockout rounds and waste a golden generation.

The sooner football clubs and nations realise Martinez is a woeful manager/head coach the better.

Commentators bigging him up now, however.

Jermaine Jenas is just so nothing! It's all just noise, like the window blowing through something hollow...it's better when the commentator is talking to himself!

Canada have been exceptional and are very unlucky to be losing this so far. Play some really nice football and brilliant athleticism.

i've decided to strike Belgium of my potential WC winners list

even though they weren't on my list to start with, i've decided not to make them a late inclusion

Think that was fair comment 2/4 years ago but I’m not sure about now.

Looking through that starting line up it’s not all that. A back three consisting of a squad player at Villa, a 35 year old from Benfica and a 33 year old from Royal Antwerp. A right back from Leicester and a squad player at Atletico on the left. Hazard who’s hardly kicked a ball for years. A striker from Fenerbahce.

De Bruyne and Tielemans are undoubtedly quality but the rest are no more than pretty decent imo. Their golden generation was finished at least one tournament ago.

Aye, although it helps when you've been in the job close to 5 years and not 5 months.

Brilliant display from Canada. As previous posts state just lack that cutting edge up front. Love the way they pressed. Why can't we play like that?

Actually think there were similarities in the tactics of Canada and how Hibs set up…they play a passing game with their wide men high…and most things go through them…much like us. the difference is the athleticism of their players…particularly in midfield…they were phenomenal, we’ve not got anywhere near that this season.

So far the best teams and possible potential winners we have seen would be France, Spain and maybe England (sorry)?. Most disappointing Germany and Argentina? Dark horses so far Japan , Saudi Arabia and Senegal?

France will be in the final against Brazil or Argentina.

cuckoo clocks, Nazi gold, toblerone and grindingly negative but efficient football. What’s not to like.

I will also be rooting for Cameroon.

Five live have the worst commentator/best pundit double act on for the Swiss game, Vikki Sparks and Pat Nevin.

A fit Magennis would add that dynamic to our midfield.

They way Canada closed them down, high up the pitch, with the midfield and defenders moving up to support them was impressive, as was the way they fluidly shape as the game changed. If only they had a forward who could take chances.

We can see a start of this at Hibs but we don't have the personnel to fully implement it, needs time! :greengrin

What’s wrong with toblerone?

Cameroon been the better side so far, I expected a little more from the Swiss.

This is up there with one of the worst games of the tournament so far. Two very average sides.
