I enjoyed the first half hour or so before the goal.

Wasn’t all action end to end stuff but it was two evenly matched sides and very tense, games that are so even and could go either way are enjoyable I think.

Realise that’s a subjective thing though and not everyone will agree

A bit disappointed with the Netherlands even though they have had 53% possession they have offered very little with one shot and none on target , Argentina have had five shots with three on target. Irish commentator says Messi has had more assists than any other player in the world cup !

Croatia only needed one shot on target against Brazil so you never know. I think Argentina will get another on the counter attack as the game goes on though. I think that was Messi's 2nd assist this tournament, Kane and Fernandes are on 3. Unless they were meaning in World Cup history, then possibly.

With an indirect free kick the kicker can't shoot straight at goal but with a direct free kick you can but don't need to.

To be fair, in the second half of this game we had 6 substitutions (30 secs a piece), 2 goal celebrations (1min each), the scuffle when the Argentinian player kicked the ball into the subs (1.5mins) and a couple of injury stoppages that I remember (say 30 secs each). Yes it was a direct free kick, not sure what's making you think it was an indirect free kick.

With an indirect free kick the kicker can't shoot straight at goal but with a direct free kick you can but don't need to.

Fair dues, I thought with a direct free kick it had to be a shot on goal, but I stand corrected.

Guy went from a reserve, to Villa picking him up and having a freak first season at Villa, won the copa America as the star man(with Messi), another freak season at Villa and only 3 years after being a reserve he's been linked with atleti and Barca this year.

Meteoric rise for him. Top 5 best GK in the world imo, Villa are just very lucky he's said he's not going anywhere, otherwise think there would be teams after him left right and centre. He's adored at Villa park and already considered one of if not the clubs best ever GK. Cannot stress enough how special he is, everyone's only just starting to notice now though.

I think Croatia might beat Brazil. They know how to win games like this and still have plenty quality, suits them better Brazil being favourites I think. Obviously by no means a banker, I just wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a wee shock tomorrow.

I think Argentina will beat Holland. Two very even sides but Argentina have Messi who will make the difference.

In the other games I think England will beat France, England on their day capable of beating anybody (I don’t think they’ll beat 3 big guns in a row though) and there’s a reason teams rarely win two world cups in a row, France will get put out before the final and every chance England will do it IMO.

Portugal to beat Morroco in the other game doesn’t need much explanation.

For everyone following todays tips, you’re very welcome.

Let’s hope tomorrow’s predictions aren’t as accurate 😂

He's very good, but he's not top 5 in the world. 3 better in the premier league at least. He'd be 3rd choice for Brazil and Germany at this tournament.

He's a clutch keeper who has big big moments, but makes his share of howlers for villa too.

He's made 2/3 mistakes for Villa the whole time he's been at the club, defo doesn't make his share of howlers. I see him every week, he's criminally underrated. Some of the saves he consistently pulls off, as a keeper myself are just breathtaking to watch. Maybe not top 5, definitely top 10 though. Prem only better keepers I would say are Ederson and Alison. Over 2/3 seasons to only make 2/3 mistakes, he's scary consistent, very clutch, technically he's a joke. I've never claimed a Villa player to be one of the best in the world in their role, but Emi is.

Two Full stretch saves in the most high pressure environment imaginable, taking your team to the World Cup semi finals, plus what he achieved in the copa, tells me top five in the world is a fair shout. I’d like a keeper who is ‘clutch in big moments’. That’s how you win stuff.

As a Villa fan, I can only think of the Utd blunder. The thing that makes him so special is his ability to consistently perform at a freak level, pulling off match winning saves on the regular. He's the furthest thing from a keeper who makes his share of howlers.

Had an excellent first season under Smith but that's about it from what I've seen. Lloris, Ramsdale & Mendy had a better season than him last season, many keepers are having a better season than him this season. He's a very good goalkeeper but I wouldn't consider him top 3 in the PL.

Funny (and sad) to think the next World Cup will be a completely different tournament without them. Really is the end of a generation with a few of the greatest to have kicked a ball ever.

I know that new icons will be born but I’m not as interested in world football as I was in the past 20 years. I believe Spain have a couple of really exciting young players at this tournament, Argentina have a young lad at Man City and think Germany have a guy who maybe could have played for England who’s meant to be a bit special but I couldn’t tell you any of their names and I’d walk past every one of them in the street.

I’m not saying the World Cup standard will get any worse but for people of my age who grew up with Messi, Ronaldo, Modric etc this really is the end of an era and I think I might cry now.

Is Argentinian football not meant to be a mix of Italian and Brazilian? Sure it was started there in a port there that brought together a mix of European and South American styles.

I love it and hope they win the tournament.

Something that I always wonder about Argentinian football is the lack of black players. For a country with so much immigration (i think?) and borders Brazil, I can’t think of any black players that have played for them?

yeah, the Dutch arguably haven’t played traditional ‘Dutch Football’ since Euro 2000. I thought they were shocking last night for 82 minutes, not even in the game, then got lucky with the old ‘hoof it and hope’ when the Argentinians panicked. The equaliser was a fabulously worked free kick mind you.

the Dutch really threw away the momentum in extra time. Argentina were clearly on the ropes yet the Netherlands inexplicably decided to sit back again passively, as they had done for most of the game.

I also love the Argentinian mentality. They have a hyper ‘macho’ stereotype which doesn’t really bother me particularly but I get why it annoys some people. There’s a lot of talk about the ‘Latin temperament’ from Italian and Spanish emigration there but there’s also a massive Irish and Scottish legacy in Argentina; my own ancestors went across there at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries because there was lots of (stolen from the indigenous peoples) land that could be worked when there wasn’t much work here. That legacy lives on, there’s Scottish schools in Buenos Ayres now and the foreign minister is called Murphy and you saw McAllister on the pitch last night.

football was brought there by the English sailors, but on the potreros (small patches of wasteland in Buenos Aires) the ‘locals’, impoverished Italian and Spanish immigrants, learned to play their own style, which unlike the English version favouring strength, speed and athleticism as well as old public school notions of sportsmanship, centred instead on possession, close control, and using tricks to evade your marker. That was the traditional Argentine style. Then they suffered an embarrassment at the 1958 World Cup and their football took on a more cynical edge, while still keeping elements from before.

As for the lack of black players, it’s a lack of a black population generally to be honest. Buenos Aires has one of the whitest populations you’ll see anywhere. Argentina’s treatment of black slaves and their descendants, as well as their own indigenous population was shameful in the 1800s.

if you like Argentine football (and I love it) Jonathan Wilson’s ‘Angels with Dirty Faces’ is a superb book.

That legacy lives on, there’s Scottish schools in Buenos Ayres now and the foreign minister is called Murphy and you saw McAllister on the pitch last night.

and theres still entire Welsh villages down in Patagonia

That’s the stereotype. And like all stereotypes there’s nuggets of truth and a lot of bollocks.

Argentina have often played with flair, as well as the dark arts. And in the 40 years since Socrates Brazil have often been turgid to watch. And they’re not averse to the occasional cynical foul and gamesmanship themselves

That's very true, but there is certainly a history of cynical defending in South America. It's probably a cultural thing, an idea that you win no matter what. It isn't unique to that part of the world, of course; the Italians are masters at it.

Thanks.

Even that stat a bit strange though is it not? You’d have thought there would be natural movement from black Brazilians across the border (I can’t think what other countries Argentina borders?)

Dare say there’s social and cultural reasons for it and I’m not wanting to offend anybody by bringing it up, jus seems a bit strange.

You're possibly right, can't say I have any knowledge on it.

Independiente, the club of Sergio Aguero and the most successful Argentinian side in terms of international honours was founded by Scots. Many of their away kits have been dark blue with a St.Andrews Cross crest.

The vast majority if Argentinians have either, Italian, Spanish or German origins. There weren't huge numbers of African Slaves compared to say Brazil or Colombia and even the indigenous population's weren't as large in numbers as the northern, tropical half of the continent so you ain't going to have many dark skinned players.

Argentinians like to think if themselves as Italians who speak Spannish, aspire to be English upper class but have the attitudes of the French.

Maradona did have African genes, he often talked about how his father had to overcome racism in his life.

absolutely. Different mentality completely.

they loved the ‘hand of god’. They took great delight in it. Not only because it helped defeat the (as they see it) imperialist English, but also because the ability to deceive a referee, or any source of established authority for that matter, and get away with it is something that is very much admired. In a country where corruption runs through every institution like a stick of rock, I can’t say that mentality surprises me, even if I don’t agree with it myself.

italia 90 was another example. There is considerable evidence that during a break in play in the game against Brazil the Argentine bench chucked a water bottle laced with tranquillisers at the Brazilian player Branco, who happily drunk from it, and was fit for nothing the rest of the game, which Argentina won late on.

the Argentines love talking and laughing about that incident, where most other nations would be embarrassed or ashamed.

I don’t agree with cheating, but I find it fascinating. They relish the role of pantomime villains.

imagine listening to that in a final it would ruin it, not forgetting they would probably riot in various countries, especially Belgium

mon Portugal

then again, if they're in he final it would mean england aren't, so fire away :)

Maroc is the French name for Morocco and French is widely used in Morocco.

Same with NED being the abbreviation for the Netherlands as the country is called Nederland in Dutch.
