Are Argentina the 1st team to win the new World Cup trophy 3 times?

Do they get to keep it?

No. Germany 74, 90, 14.

Shame it ended with a bit of a damp squib of a shootout. 2 poor penalties killed them.

Gutted for Mbappe, a hat trick and he loses a final. Delighted for Messi obviously, scored 2 and played a huge part in a 3rd and was arguably overshadowed.

As I said earlier him lifting the trophy will be an iconic image. Glad I get to witness the greatest ever to do it have his moment of glory. My Grandad has Pele, my dad had Maradona and I've had Messi.

Yep, the way they rallied at 2 down and 3-2 down was special.

Genuinely a shame either side had to lose that. If they had said you can let both teams share the trophy I'd have probably gone for that.

The greatest player the game has ever seen.

From a team point of view, what an exceptional World Cup from Argentina.

From losing the first game to what occurred today, they have shown an obscene level of character. They deserve that and then some.

No. So much of the game was abysmal with no ebb and flow, if it had been played more like that for the first eighty minutes then absolutely.

As it is, it’s still a classic and fitting for the crowning of Messi as the undisputed greatest.

What a final that was once it came to life. Positively boringly one-sided for the first 70+ minutes (though Argentina's second goal was sublime), but wow!

Now that they’ve gone on to win it that could arguably be the greatest ever save at a World Cup.

Absolutely obscene.

I genuinely think that’s been:

The best ever World Cup

That was such a privilege to watch.

We have witnessed history tonight. The greatest player of all time with his last shot at the ultimate glory has done it and pulled an iconic tournament-long performance to do it. Two goals for Lionel Messi in a World Cup Final. An ice-cold first penalty in the shoot-out. Beating the holders despite Mbappe scoring a hattrick.

We will never see anything like this again and I for one would be happy if that is the peak of non-Hibs/Scotland football I’ll ever get to see.

Agree with all of this.

I said it earlier but if people think Maradona single handedly won a World Cup then Messi has blown that out the water - although I believe neither of them single handedly won anything and it’s massively disrespectful to their team mates to suggest as such. Same for both them at club level.

That was simply greatness tonight, from both Messi and Mbappe. That felt like a coronation. It felt like the natural end to Messi’s career but at the same time it felt like a passing of the torch to Mbappe. It’s put an end to any debate. He’s the greatest footballer of all time. He’s probably the greatest athlete of all time imo.

If I was Messi (tbf I hope he doesn’t) I’d be looking into whether I could call it a day right now. If he announced his retirement after that it would be an absolutely iconic end to the best career there’s ever been in sport having won what I would argue was the greatest single sporting contest in history.

A storyline like this one will be almost impossible for anyone to ever match.

Without giving the sitting on the fence answer of “whoever wins it deserves it”, does anyone think Argentina weren’t worthy winners?

Over the piece I think they’ve been the best team but on top of that, they’ve shown some real character. They could have folded after Saudi Arabia. They could have folded after Netherlands. They probably should have folded after tonight when it went to 2-2 and almost definitely should have folded when it went to 3-3.

Absolutely exceptional from the Argies. The character and resilience they’ve shown has been incredible. There’s something special about seeing a success story in sports that has no shortage of sheer grit, determination, coming back from blow after blow and a will to win. It’s what made 2016 so special for us.

Messi showed in the final not only is he the best but he's also a team player ( unlike Ronaldo ) . Real fitting end to Messi's last world cup with him winning the greatest prize of them all :not worth

I told my dad after the first game it's a good omen. Spain lost to the swiss in 2010 when they won, Germany drew their second game vs Ghana in 2014 and the French drew with Denmark in 2018. Seems to be a trend the winners drop points in the group stages vs someone they shouldn't be dropping points to. Hit their wobble early on and built from there.

Have not read the thread but surely not the first to comment that was the most enjoyable football match I've seen since 21st May 2016. Delighted for Messi - a legend and a true gent.

Don't think I've felt this emotional watching a cup final since 2016 !!
Me too. Heart was pounding through the end of normal time to the final whistle. I'm knackered.

Yep, the way they rallied at 2 down and 3-2 down was special.

Genuinely a shame either side had to lose that. If they had said you can let both teams share the trophy I'd have probably gone for that.

Yup. Great final. France are my non-Scotland tournament team, but i'm happy for Argentina. A share would have been my ideal finish.

The Croatian keeper was amazing as well but after today I agree you can’t look past Martinez. The leg save from Coman tonight was unbelievable.

Livakovic was robbed a bit, though. Had a much better tournament overall.

18 more saves, and a far better save percentage.

Still can’t believe what we saw last night. Felt more like a Wrestlemania main event than a game of football. The end of an era of Messi for Argentina deserves no less than an epic and we got that and more.

His thump is directly under the Qatar flag.

Equally, could have been Scotland depending on how you look at it.

No, I think Argentina deserved it, no doubt, they got stronger as the tournament went on. The game against Holland was quite like the final with the Netherlands only starting g to play in the last part of normal time. France got to the final because of slick finishing g. They were totally outplayed by England, Morocco and Argentina for long parts of the game but still came back. Good team

Messi got it.

Should’ve been Di Maria though. Mbappe only came to life in the last 10 mins of normal time.

Agree that Mac Allister was superb, just for me it felt like Di Maria was the difference especially in the first half. Made Kounde look like a rookie

Infantino now wants to have a WC every three years starting after 2030

because he loves the commercial success

But how will his bosses judge him?

They don't care what the fans think. He somehow seems to have managed to give Qatar some good PR out of this tournament, so I'd guess they will think he's done a good job. Which means the bribery and corruption will continue - money is their God. If they can hold the tournament more often, in richer countries, in (European) winter, then that is what will happen.

It's like a lot of things in life - the rich will get their way.

Which isn't to say that I don't think there are things we can learn from how they held the tournament - I think restrictions on alcohol are a good thing and it helps the atmosphere. I didn't hear of any hooligan related incidents. I've had my enjoyment of several games in Scotland ruined by drunks. I'm sure there are other positives...........

I’ve loved this World Cup, it’s had the ridiculous drama, thrilling games, all the narratives you can shake a stick at and the best final by a mile. But I’m sorry it was ever played there and I’m sorry such a rotten regime will be associated with such a beautiful exhibition.

I'd always said that Argentina was the best World Cup - but I enjoyed this one more. Also, if it had been held in the summer, when the weather was good, then I wouldn't have watched half as much as I did. But it should never have been given to Qatar.

Agreed. The final showed the beauty and power of football but sadly the game is only going in one direction and Qatar is just the tip of the iceberg.

Saudi Arabia is now being mooted as a potential host...

Fwiw I think the winter timing was great. Players clearly had more in the tank and its nice to have something a bit more exotic than Hibs vs Kilmarnock to enjoy in the cold and dark weather.

I too have loved this World Cup and the final was truly spectacular. I share your concerns with regards to the Qatar regime, however, I do wonder if there will be the same moral outrage when 2026 comes around. Mexico continues to have horrific and significant human rights violations, Canada (my home country) has long standing systemic discrimination against indigenous people and the USA (where would we begin with that country?).

Overall I think the quality was very high.

There’s been this assumption this century that the Champions League is now the pinnacle as a footballing spectacle, but I don’t think that’s true. Plenty of teams delivered really, really good performances.

There’s also the point that the Qatar World Cup has been the most wasteful environmentally. And the naked corruption and celebration of money above all else.

The empty seats at every match and VIPs not bothering to be in their seats made me sick.

Let’s see what’s happening with these white elephant stadia a few years from now.
