England don't have the truly outstanding player that so often at World Cups drags their team through difficult games to victory. Bellingham could become that player-he'll only be 23 at the next one.

But collectively the squad is as good as any. Rice is not quite top level but then neither is Rabiot for France. Brazil and Argentina especially with several average players
It’s just fine margins at that level. England could easily win the game and the tournament. France’s experience and nous paid off.
I don’t think England need to reflect too much tbh
It’s quite a simplistic way to look at it, but when you see their record over a long period of time I think it just shows that their players aren’t as good (and haven’t been as good) as they’re hyped up to be and as the players other nations produce.
France are probably thr prime example. Most people would probably look at it and say Giroud and Rabiot don’t get in the England team. That’s two guys that have dozens of honours between them and are probably only playing because of injuries to other players.
Whilst folk will point to average players playing in many teams, I think a lot of the same can be said of many of the England squad.

I can't believe that just because England are out that none of our national broadcasters are showing games today! It's a bloody disgrace and heads should role, the UK is more than just the home counties FFS....am raging!
On another note, now that Englandshire are oot, Michael Oliver surely must be in with a good shout of getting to referee the final.
Good referee, which we had his standard in Scotland

For me World Class players are Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe, Lewandowski, Haaland and the likes who can carry and entire team on their backs at time.
Andy Robertson is a top player but I think word class is a push. Not sure who else in the Scotland squad would even be considered close.
Same applies to USA / Canada. Davies and Pulisic are good but never word class
Andy Robertson was recently voted by Liverpool fans as the best LB they’ve ever had. In their entire history. He is World Class. I’d put the likes of Messi, Mbappe, CR7 and Haaland in that above-World Class category - they are among the greatest players ever (Haaland and Mbappe on their way to that status of course, not there yet although a WC double at 23 probably does it for Mbappe).

Reading a story earlier that Mateu Lahoz has reportedly been sent home . He's the Spanish referee that was in charge of Argentina v Holland game . Something I hadn't realised that he created history with the most yellow cards in a world cup game , as many as 18 players were booked according to what I read plus Argentina manager and coach too . The previous record was jointly held by Germany v Cameroon 1998 and Portugal v Holland 2006 . The Argentina keeper could be facing a ban for the semi for calling him crazy, arrogant and useless and the worst referee at world cup . The 10 minutes added time was also brought up by Argentina players . Messi quote = I think FIFA must take care of this ' it cannot put a referee like that for a match of such magnitude , of such importance , the referee cannot fail to be up to the task !

Referee for Argentina game is a Italian called Daniele Orsato .The two you mentioned Michael Oliver has gone home but Anthony Taylor is still out apparently.

Talking of Giroud, I just found out he played for a third tier French league side called Istres on loan from his home town club as a 21 year old, trying to make a breakthrough into full time pro. His manager that season? Ex Hibby Freddie Arpinion, who later suggested a formal link up between the two clubs to swap talent :grr:
He could have been the focal point of a Benji Giroud Fletcher front three, with wee Zemmama pulling the strings just behind.
Missed the boat again.

How can the pundits says that's not a penalty? Fair enough keeper can't get out the way but he commits to that position, if you block a player off on the half way line by stopping dead still then it's free kick. The keeper comes with the intention of getting the ball, he doesn't and obstructs the player by using his body to block him off and take him out the game. Penalty.
Thankfully Peter Walton seems to have something resembling a brain.

We are seeing Messi back at his very best (with maybe a yard or two less pace) but playing without all that weight of expectation that seemed to burden him in previous World Cups. You’d think this one would have the most pressure on him, but the Copa America win seems to have completely turned the mentality of the team and support. Would love to see them win it this year but still think France will win.

The keeper isn't just standing about though. If the striker ran into him when he was just minding his own business then no penalty. He's actively made a movement into that position, striker has got to the ball first and the keeper has by moving to said position blocked him off and prevented him potentially scoring.
I'll defend keepers wherever possible but in this instance, it's a penalty.

Ian Wright's the worst, sitting there arrogantly shaking his head and saying "no" as an ex referee tries to explain why it was a penalty as per the laws of the game.

Scored in nearly every game, Golden Ball is a cert if he wins it, potentially top scorer and winner. It’ll be the cherry on top of the most decorated and exceptional career football has ever seen.

The last bit is a quote, not sure who from. I don't literally think there will never ever be a player as good as Messi, it's a bit of hyperbole but only added it as I think fits a brilliant quote about him. Although I'm not sure we will ever see another player hold so many records on his own. Ronaldo is probably the closest, but by levels we might never see I mean the records. He's holds so many records people thought would never be broken, and he absolutely smashed them

I like the Portuguese national team, and as a result I liked Ronaldo more; that wasn't to diminish Messi though. I think Messi has more natural football ability, whilst Ronaldo is more of an athlete. I thought that mix would serve Ronaldo better into older age, but this WC would seem proof of the opposite (I haven't really followed them domestically to know how well they've been doing up to now) and Messi has looked phenomenally gifted still, whilst Ronaldo looks a liability.

I think it’s all about context, stats wise you cannot look past Pele as the best ever but you can’t compare someone from the 50s/60s to someone playing now as it’s a completely different game.
Maradona dragged a rotten Napoli side to a Serie A title, something that goes beyond stats IMO.
Players from different generations leave marks on football, Pele/Eusebio from the 50s/60s and then you’ve got ones like Cruyff/Maradona/R9/Zidane etc that have left different legacies in their own eras.
As the best I’ve ever seen, it’s Messi but that’s only because I was born in 91, so can only go by what I’ve watched football as I understood it. I’ve seen highlights of the greats above but I wasn’t here to watch football at that time so I naturally compare them to what I’ve grown up watching.
I just feel privileged to have been able to watch so many players like Zidane, Ronaldinho, Messi, CR7 at their absolute peak but also have a tinge of jealousy I didn’t get to see the others like Maradona, Pele, Cruyff etc at theirs.

Yep, very difficult to compare different eras. I was born in '84 so can only really remember football from the early 90s onwards but when you see clips of games from the 60s/70s, it looks like walking football in comparison to the game today. Even stuff from the 80s/90s looks slow in comparison. The players these days are better athletes by and large than those from the past.
The one decent bit of insight Dixon gave last night was about the assist Messi gave Alvarez. It isn't speed from Messi that was causing the problems for Croatia. It was the slowing down. He'd be running at them and then all of a sudden would pretty much come to a standstill before twisting, turning and then running again. Very difficult to defend against.

It’s a myth that they were absolutely rotten, much like it’s a myth the 86 Argentina side were rotten or that Maradona won the WC by himself. Was he the main man for these teams? Absolutely. Was he the sole reason they won these trophies? Absolutely not. Maradona scored 10 goals when Napoli won the 86/87 league, never in a million years can that be considered someone that’s single handedly won a team a league.

He'd be running at them and then all of a sudden would pretty much come to a standstill before twisting, turning and then running again. Very difficult to defend against.
I seen a stat a while ago that said that in the 70s players covered something like 7km per game on average. Players now are well into double figures. Bobby Madden even put up a photo of his watch after refereeing a game a couple of seasons ago saying he’d ran 11km.
Footballers from the 70s etc would feel like they were playing against 18 men or so with how much more ground is covered and how much quicker and athletic players are now.

I dont think I've ever commented before on the debate about who was the greatest nor am I a "fanboy" (a phrase used by folk complaining about the term GOAT🤣) but after watching last night's game I did say he was the greatest player ever. I saw Maradona and have seen both Ronaldo 1, Ronaldo 2 and Messi and in my opinion even taking I to account time frames I just think Messi is the best I've ever seen. Apologies to Pele, Eusebio and Smith as I never saw them but Messi is just unbelievable

Think it's down to who you like to watch as well for me it's Pele just love watching footage of him , most of the time other players try to hack or kick him though he just keeps going nowadays the slightest touch and the guys rolling about like he's been shot , different times I suppose. Hard to go against Messi as well with what he's done and won though I think piers Morgan actually likes his players interviews rather than their football as Andy Murray as made him aware off.

He would have to be up there.
He's already 7th top goalscorer for France at 23 and has the second best goals per game ratio out of any French player who's got at least 60 caps (only bettered by Michel Platini).
However Platini only played for the French national team for 11 years and Mbappe has been playing for 5 years and could easily have another 10+ years left in him.

The payments were due to be paid for any player who was part of a World Cup squad starting two weeks before their team's first match so we'll be due around 12/13 days worth of payments, as will Al-Faisaly.

It's all opinions in the end, I think Messi is th best player ever, some think others. What i will say about Maradonna's Napoli though, is they were far from rotten. :greengrin
Again, that’s me reading about it as I wasn’t born in the 80s.
It’s all very subjective but the adults who actually get into full blown arguments about it are for the watching.

All clubs a player has played for in the two years leading up to the World Cup are entitled to receive a payment.

No - it was blocked by Giroud. Shouldn’t be an assist for Mbappe, would imagine that gets retracted

Different bookies different rules which is pants.
The Lloris save?? Why is that not classed a shot in target with some. Again Skybet have given that

Been impressed with Morocco. They play with a freedom that England don't have. That said, they'll probably lose 3-0.
