It feels like a changing of the guard - The Germany / Argentina / Belgium losses, and the way some "unfancied" teams have played.

There has been some chat on here about how Maradonas brutal treatment at world cups has been exaggerated by his fans to make a case that he’s the best ever.

Just heard a great stat today, Messi has just equaled Maradonas matches played at world cups. After 21 games each, Messi has been fouled 60 times. Maradona was fouled in the same number of games a total of 152 times, that’s over seven times a game. And it goes without saying those fouls will not be of the shirt pulling, obstruction type. They will be studs down the Achilles, stamp the metatarsal type fouls. The three most fouled players of all time at world cups have all been Maradona; 82 86 and 90.

It’s just a completely different game now.

True, but not in my lifetime they haven’t James - we’ve qualified for more World Cups and Euros than they’ll.ever manage 👍 that’s achievement over the decades. And against far better players and teams over my lifetime too 👍 take an off form and aged Bale out that side, you get what you’ve seen this tournament- he’s held them up the last 6/7 years. They were rotten every game.

Wales had a prosperous spell, all down to one world class player as a talisman. Good for them, but as I say, watch them spiral down the rankings now.

My comment specifically referred to the last 6 years mate but unfortunately I'm not old enough to remember anything other than the 1998 world cup. No hard feelings, I hope we make it in the next years. Just don't see where we are going to get it from.. Tierney & Robertson won't last forever.

Never underestimate just getting the job done. France are obviously a class above but I wouldn’t say England have no chance.

Fair play, they got the job done, that is all they can be asked to do. With the draw they had, meeting France in the Quarters was always going to be England's first real test. Recent Nations League games against teams of similar standing didn't show them up very well though.

I hope any player in a Scotland jersey gets us there James. My point to MW was you take Bale out that Wales side, they don’t reach semi finals or major tours- he carried them over the line with his world class ability and talent - take him out that side over the last decade, they don’t attain what they have. Joe Allen for example raised his game I think because he played alongside Bale - he’s distinctly average, but when you play with really good players, you go that extra mile to achieve. Like you, I hope we do qualify and reach milestones- but my point stands, remove Bale from that Welsh side, they wouldn’t achieve what they had - hence I think he’s carried them over the line in games.
