I can’t imagine what would be on here, if our prize asset was signing for Rangers for free
25468
any idea who that is between Allan and Murphy?
Almost looks mixed race and short dark hair similar to Nathan Wood - not someone I recognise from our squad.
Malik Zaid from development team?
Maybe it’s just the angle that’s throwing me off.

Just need to think back to when Flo signed on loan for the huns. This is no doubt worse cause Souttar is actually a good player.

It was the nature of Flo and KT's moves. I don't remember Whittaker getting so much hate.

A pre-contract is possibly the worst outcome for them. Won't get any money for him and if they play him, I can't see him giving 100%. He'll be trying not to get injured, particularly given his history.

Totally. And I think signing a pre-contract with them is why they're so pissed off. Heading through to Glasgow for nothing. Offt, unlucky! 😂

Heard the Motherwell manager calling out pre contracts in January between Scottish clubs. Are we the only country who do this?
I remember well the atmosphere at Easter Rd when Caldwell did the same and got Hibs no fee

If a club has let a contract run down to 6 months for a player then they're not expecting to get any money for him anyway.

No we’re not the only country that does it.
It’s hard to see a way around it, because players coming to the end of a contract will want to know that their next move is confirmed in writing.
Loans between clubs in the same division should end though - same issue with conflicted loyalties but totally avoidable imo.

They had plenty of time to get him to sign a new contract but because of his injury problems they clearly didn't want to risk it and are now paying the price...

"The 21-year-old fell out of favour under previous boss Jack Ross, who dropped him from his matchday squads after questioning the player’s fitness, but Maloney has been impressed with Scott so far.
He said: "James will stay until the end of the season. I've been really happy with him in training. After what he's shown, the next stage for him is that when he gets match minutes he has to show what he's been doing in training"
Scott could end up being a surprise package. It would be a real turnaround in his fortunes if he can get onto the pitch again and do the business.

Think the article is harsh - Ross didn't freeze him out, he didn't do nearly enough to be in the squad. Secondly I think this is spin from SM - Hull don't want him back without any game time in him and am guessing we can't force them to take them back. If he really was showing up why are we looking at bringing another forward.

I can't really take seriously the idea that this is spin from Maloney. Who knows the terms of the loan, but I think it's easier just to believe that Scott might be doing well at training, like the boss man says?

There’s a player in Scott, no doubt about it after what he done for Motherwell.
He’s bulked up/put in weight since then which was probably always going to happen with him growing, his ankle injury and lack of games due to covid.
If we can get him fit and sharp then he’s a very good option for the left of a front 3 role imo. Hopefully he finds his pace and he can go direct at defenders again and score some of the peaches he did at Motherwell

It can be either and best to see for ourselves. SM might not be sure that training translates into game form in his case but Bushiri should test him with tastey tackles.

Nice optimistic post to read.
I think he’s fat and sh*te and I’d be raging if we were paying anything for him.
It’s been obvious for months that he needs to lose weight and train harder. It’s not happening so he stays out of match day squads until he shows enough.
Very disappointed with him tbh

Ooooh that’s an icy statement 😂 can’t see that forcing The Rangers hand during January, if anything they’re well stocked at centre half - they’ll lowball or wait 5 months and get him for the middle of a doughnut 👍
Three major injuries in last three years too so they won’t bid a lot - he’ll get pelters from their stands first mistake he makes. Perfect 👍

Kickback thread on it is pretty funny - calling him a rat etc!
Would have thought Souttar might have gone to England to test himself but across the M8 is the comfortable option.
While he’s been in good form and unlucky with injuries - I’m not sure he’s what Rangers really need to make them better in Europe etc.

I’m sure I read a stat that hearts conceded an awful lot of chances on their goal, more than us as others in the league.
The difference with hearts and why they’re doing well in the league is Craig Gordon.

He's improved no end to be fair. Think it was the 1-1 game a few years back - McNulty missed penalty, late equaliser for them - when I could've sworn he was drunk in the first half. Him and Berra were an utter shambles.

That will come with game time though, so here's hoping he gets a good run out in the side for the rest of the season and comes back a fit and better player for it.

Or even Aberdeen, both events will be equally hilarious... Hopefully with same results! :greengrin:thumbsup:

It might be unpopular to say, but I think that the statement from Hearts strikes the correct tone - they supported him through his injuries and he leaves on a free contract. He could have signed an extension with a release clause so that Hearts got something. In addition, going to Rangers shows a lack of ambition and I hope that his career stalls from here, starting with Hearts playing him in their reserve team until the summer.

Not a go at you, but wanted to respond on the point about have him being supported through injuries. And the following questions aren’t directed at you - more just me trying to make a point.
What would any other professional club in Europe do with an injured player? He’s under contract, they can’t just stop paying him wages or refuse to treat him. I’m not sure but I don’t think they extended his contract when he was injured - if they had done they’d not be in the position they’re in now.

Absolutely this, and I'd say it for any Hibs player tooo. Just because a player was injured doesn't mean they owe the club more than any other player. They were a contacted employee and the club has a responsibility to support them in the unfortunate event of injury. No professorial club is doing a contacted player some sort of favour by paying for their rehabilitation, it's the bare minimum they should be doing.

Hearts would have been grossly negligent if they hadn’t supported him through his injuries - it’s a hard one for them to take for sure, but he’s well within his rights to pursue his best option.
Plus - and don’t get me wrong, I utterly despise Rangers - how does signing for them show a lack of ambition? If he stays fit, he’ll win trophies there.
They’re the current league champions and sit six points clear at the top of the league at the moment. In the latter stages of the Europa League too.
Unless there’s a dramatic turnaround in their fortunes in the next five months, he’ll be arriving (provided he doesn’t move this month) at a team in the Champions League group stages, this summer.
What were the other options for him - Stoke and Blackburn? Would signing for them be showing more ambition?

You are right about having to support him as he was under contract when he was injured but I was thinking about David Turnbull when I wrote it and the difference between what he did, extended his contract for another year to make sure Motherwell got a fee (I know he is a Motherwell fan) and what Soutar has done in leaving with the parent club getting nothing after having significant injuries during the term of his contract. Martin Boyle, whom we know also had significant injuries whilst under contract, could also have run down his contract and left Hibs for nothing. I guess it goes to character of the player and we should be grateful we have someone with the character of Martin Boyle (and Motherwell had David Turnbull) rather than a Soutar.

SJM chose to go to Championship side Aston Villa rather than Scottish Champions Celtic. Had he chosen Celtic he would have won more trophies at this stage of his career but I would argue is a much better (and richer) player for having chosen Aston Villa over Celtic. In addition, both Blackburn and Stoke, like Aston Villa at the time, both have chances of being promoted to the Premier League.

At the end of SJM's career we'll know how good he was, we don't really know how good Scott Brown was. Could Brown have played for Liverpool or Man Utd or was Watford & Burnley his level?

SJM didn’t have a choice of signing for Celtic, as they didn’t offer enough to money for him. And I’d wager a large amount of money that he’d happily have signed for them, if they had. Obviously I can’t know that for sure, but neither can you be certain that he’s a better player now at Villa than he would have become at Celtic. He may well be though.
Anyway, it’s besides the point as he didn’t have that option. I find it a hard argument to accept that choosing playing in the English Championship with a shot of promotion at the EPL, somehow shows more ambition than signing for a team where major honours will be almost a certainty.
Ron Gordon is currently trying to grow the income streams for Scottish football by looking to sell the product more effectively than it currently is being. The idea that Stoke or Blackburn are a better option than Rangers is part of the problem that we face in doing so.
I’ve heard it said many times on here over the years that Scott Brown somehow wasted his career by signing for Celtic, despite the fact that he captained them to nine titles in a row, has made more European appearances for them than any other player, and is among the most decorated players to ever play the game, anywhere.
I don’t particularly enjoy seeing players sign for the Old Firm, but the argument that the English Championship should be more aspirational for players than winning honours in Scotland does our game no favours at all.

Celtic matched Villa's bid at the last minute but McGinn had already decided he would got to Villa after feeling they wanted him more and being impressed with their facilities. He could have gone to Celtic if he'd desperately wanted to- he initially did, but changed his mind for various reasons.
I think SJM had a better grasp of how good he was than a lot of people and backed himself to succeed down South and probably saw it as exciting challenge that could lead to good things- if he'd not done well he'd probably have got signed by Celtic anyway I reckon!
I do agree generally though that it's ridiculous to claim any player signing for or staying with the Old Firm is lacking ambition. Normally players dream of winning titles, cups, playing in front of huge crowds, and in Europe- so what is it that the Old Firm don't give them?

And add-ons!
The Rangers are close to signing a defender from Vitesse, they also have Balogun, Bassey, Helander and Goldson - why would they pay money now and potentially from a follow on transfer when he goes for nothing in May - Hearts are hamstrung, their bargaining position is weak.
Where’s their sugar daddy when they needed him 😂 mind the way they talk they’ve re-signed the Scottish version of Vincent Kompany in Craig Halkett 😂Craig ******* Halkett 😂
Of all the zillion players that Hearts have signed in the last few seasons, Souttar was the only one who I would have liked to see sign for us. Having said that, possibly just through injury he never really had me hugely upset 're his form for them. Being somewhat contrary I didn't join in the huge acclaim for his Scotland appearance versus Denmark. I thought the whole team played well though we have to recognise we caught Denmark at a great time for us. I think this is a win/win for us, Hearts lose out, and im not sure Souttar will improve the other lot. Beggars belief almost! 😁

As I said before, I can’t know for sure, but I think there is real merit to the argument that he is a better player now than he would have been at Celtic. But who knows? Rodgers was manager at the time, and he may well have done great things with McGinn.
Anyway, I still don’t get that the Championship is some huge gateway that playing in Scotland isn’t - playing for the OF was no impediment to Van Dijk, Wanyama, Forster, Edouard, Ajer and Patterson, to name but a few recent moves to the EPL.

Highly unlikely he would be playing in the prem after one season at Celtic though, he made the right choice for his career
https://www.hmfckickback.co.uk/index.php?/topic/194969-souttar-signs-pre-contract-with-rangers-title-updated/page/15/
They’re not in the slightest bit happy over the road about Souttar signing a pre-contract with Sevco 🤣. One of my favourites so far has been a poster kicking off with “As a co-owner of this club…”.
Off the Ball just now has been pointing out Hearts fans are hypocritical. They signed him on a pre-contract from Dundee United.

I understand their frustration but it’s the club they should be complaining at. Allowing him to leave on a free is their doing. FWIW I hope he stays there until the summer and they get nothing for him as he will get it tight from the fans if he starts regardless.
I thought this Savage guy was going to revolutionise their transfer policy? They're losing their best and most valuable asset for nothing as it stands and they'll have to accept buttons this month if they want anything at all. Pleasing as they say.

Maybe not after one, but a good few of the other players I mentioned moved after very little time - Patterson has hardly played for Rangers.
I’m still not convinced that McGinn had a choice anyway - I appreciate what Shrekko said about Celtic having a bid accepted last minute, and what JC said SJM himself said to him. I just hadn’t seen it reported that Celtic had a bid accepted. McGinn himself told Graeme Hunter that he was really disappointed not to have signed for Celtic after their interest was known but not matched by an acceptable bid.
Anyway, this is a transfer thread and I’ve helped to take the conversation off piste a bit with this, which I appreciate can be frustrating for others.

Just heard from a yam I know that Soutter spoke to a few people for advice before joining the hun.
One of these advisers was none other than Craig Levein, who felt Rangers were the best choice. Strikes me as no surprise as Levein is always full of praise when asked about Soutter so still knows him well.
No doubt this would induce a few more snotters down at tiny.

think the gist of it was the Celtic ****ed us around over the summer, AV came in with an acceptable offer, SJM travelled down to speak to them, and was really impressed by them.
on his way back up, Celtic had panicked because their arrogance had them assuming they’d get him for a song, and matched the AV bid. McGinn was made aware of this but had already made up his mind to go to villa, who had demonstrated how much they valued him and saw in him

He did, literally marked Baggio out of that game.
McLaren was a very good player. I rate Souttar too, but he’s not currently in the class as McLaren was.

Seems he certainly didn’t talk to his own manager about it, because Neilson seemed unaware of the pre-contract yesterday until it was announced.

I know I have green tinted specs on but I just have never rated Souttar that highly. Any time we played them I always fancied we could take advantage of his vulnerabilities and his tendency to make a mistake or two.
Levein built him up and long touted him for Scotland but to me that was for selfish reasons rather than an honest critique of the player. It will be interesting if he has improved or indeed improves whilst at Rangers but apart from the annoyance of losing a player to them on the cheap I don’t think Hearts will miss him that much.

Thought the reason Doidge wasn’t starting and getting much game time was that he wasn’t a 100% fit from what was quite a serious injury.
Can’t see how a move to Dundee would enhance his career.
