Wonder if he doesn't fancy the fight to stay in the league?
I'm sure Martindale said the other week Forrest wasn't likely to sign a new deal at Livi because he wanted to play more regularly.
He's probably thinking about pocketing the signing on fee/higher wage in the summer when he's out of contract.

Allan Forrest turns down St Johnstone after fee agreed.
Assume someone else has come in. Bit of a blow for Saints I would have thought.

Reading a bit more they think it's McGrath because it's been reported that they have bid up to 1m for a midfield player. Not sure how much McGrath would cost but doubt even with add ons they would get close to 1m

All my Aberden supporting pals say he's rank rotten now. In the recent game v sevco he was rotten the only thing he done was act like himself and get a player sent off. Good at the winding up but not much of a player now.

I disagree. I think McGeough is a better player and would do a job if we could get him fit.

with the right players around him, scott allan, at his peak, was phenomenal. i think he'll never reach those heights again though, and he's playing against better opposition than he was in his first spell, and with worse team mates than his second spell.
if fit, dylan would improve us without a doubt.

I don't think the present day McGeouch is the player who left Hibs.
The Dylan McGeouch who was an absolutely cracking player at that point.
Mental that we've had all sorts of bother with our midfield over the years yet we managed to sign or loan Scott Allan, Dylan McGeouch, John McGinn, Liam Henderson, Marvin Bartley and Fraser Fyvie when we were in the Championship.

That wasn't an accident. The only time Petrie gave Hibs a respectable budget was when the alternative was a prolonged stay in the Championship.

He won't be the same player no, but he is a forward thinking player who creates space in the middle of the field for the runners. I would give him a season at least. I think he would do well in there with JDH.

Not suggesting for one second that Ferguson is a realistic signing prospect - but have we not just pocketed exactly that sum as well as freeing up the wage of one of our highest earners?
FWIW I reckon the one thing we’re lacking is an energetic midfielder in the mould of Ferguson, although I’d expect he’d be out of our reach.

The signings so far show we know what we are doing surly? No signings are a guarantee to be successful but addressing the positions we all wanted is to would seem a good start.
I’m not too worried about their recruitment policy, some decent signings but some average at best aswell.

Another poster has suggested that he was injured and walked off.
I have said carried off and someone else has walked off.
We are both in agreement Melkerson was injured.
Like everyone here, I hope he walked off and wasn’t carried off.
I have messaged the person back who told me he was carried off to seek clarity and they replied - “yeah mate, he was carried off”.
Just to clarify, I’ve been told he was carried off.

I know you’ve said it’s unrealistic but to put this in perspective. We have to pay off Boyles contract, agree a few with aberdeen, agree a signing on fee with Ferguson, agree a wage with Ferguson.
Assumed £4000 a week from Boyle. Approx 122 weeks = £488,000
Assumed 3 year deal for Ferguson at £4000 for three years = £624,000
Assumed £300,000 signing on fee (10% being the standard of the transfer).
Total outlay £1,412,000 before agreeing a transfer fee (albeit Boyles wage of 488k is already budgeted for)

Why would we not? The contract he agreed to that we void because we have sold him? Of course we pay it off (or come to a settlement). That’s why transfer fees go smaller the less time is on the players contract.
Edit - he had approx 122 week left of his current contract, ending June/July 2024
The only thing that changes that is a player putting in a transfer request thus voiding the remainder of his contact should he be transferred.

I've been following fitba since I was about 5 or something and in all that time I've never heard of a selling club paying off a players contract in circumstances like Martin Boyle's. Perhaps if that club was actively touting the player and he didn't want to go as an incentive for him to leave and get him off the wage bill, but as a legal requirement to a player who was actually looking to move for his own benefit ...... I would need to see cast iron evidence that such a thing happens even in the absence of a transfer request.
Basically what you are saying is on leaving the club for a 2 million quid payday Hibs owed Boyle somewhere in the region of £366,000 maybe more. I highly doubt it. In fact, if he was on the wage some folk seem to think, IE around 5K a week Hibs would owe him £610,000 .... It would hardly have been worth selling him if that was the case.

I'm not calling the guy a liar mate, but as I said I can't say I've ever heard of such a thing when the player is actively keen on the move and as I said in my edit ... if Boyle was on the alleged 5K a week widely touted on here and elsewhere, with 122 weeks of his contract left Hibs would owe him over six hundred thousand quid ... I just cant see Hibs taking a hit like that to let him go with little or no prospect of replacing him with a player of the same quality in his position.

I don't think he's lying either, just doesn't fully understand how contracts work methinks, as i said in a different post it would effectively mean that two clubs were paying Boyle weekly....

Only if he was going for a lower wage. So on 4,000 a week with a year to run. Goes to another club on 2,000 a week for two years. He will loose 2,000 a week for one year or 104,000. Selling club offers 50,000 to player to get him off the books

Sometimes that happens, not always.
I’m no sure it works like that when he signed another contract with another club.

Isn’t Naismith in charge of recruiting players now?
Joe Savage but others also helping and seems to be working. It’s the only reason Hearts are above Hibs this season as they had better summer recruitment.

Bottom of article..
“ They also want to qualify for European football regularly and have already overhauled the recruitment system by appointing William Lancefield head of recruitment last July.
At the same time, George Brown arrived from Rangers as lead recruitment analyst. Both men contributed to the signings of first-team players including Cammy Devlin and Nathaniel Atkinson.”

Speaks for a minute or so about Melkersson and easing him into the games but no mention of an injury at all, surely if he was injured he'd have mentioned there?
Has me questioning if there's any truth in the rumour now, either that or Maloney wants to keep very tight lipped about it for some reason.

you’ve got this completely wrong I’m afraid. The contract we have with him, is to play for Hibs. By agreeing to the transfer and signing a contract with his new club, the contract he has with Hibs is terminated. We don’t pay him anything.

I think the most likely explanation is that Melkersson took a sore one or a dead leg during the bounce match and was taken off, visibly in pain, thus the reports, but that it’s had no long term effects other than a bit of bruising. The injury rumour hasn’t hit the MSM from what I can see, so Maloney probably doesn’t even know it’s a hot topic on Hibs.net, so didn’t bother to quash it in his interview, just didn’t mention it. Melkersson is a young inexperienced guy that they have high, high hopes for, but who hasn’t played since November, his style of play is also very high intensity, so they will want to make sure he is completely ready before playing him. If he gets a good start and the crowd love him and his confidence is high, he could be amazing. Throw him in before he’s 100% and he has a bad game and the crowd don’t take to him and he could struggle. We are all desperate to see him play, but biding our time is probably good management of a young inexperienced player.

You are way off the mark I'm afraid.
Players can only be contracted to one club at any given time or have one contract full-stop . So any previous contracts Boyle may have had will be null and void once he agrees a new deal. That's like saying when Boyle signed the new improved contract with us we also had to honour the previous contract which had the £500k clause. I'm sure these contracts will be complex and if either party (player or club) don't honour these details there will be penalties. So imagine if the previous contract Boyle held with us said he had to turn up to training each day at 10am. That would be a struggle for him just now being as he's in Saudia Arabia.
Basically Boyle had no contract with Hibernian as soon as he signed for Al-Faisaly.
That said the current contract he holds with Al-Faisaly will have some clauses in them that will benefit us in the long term no doubt. Details such as a sell on cause (we get a % of any future sale) and I'm sure I read we have first option to buy him if they decide to sell him in the future.

Regardless, I’m happy that’s the sort of players we’re looking for as the boy does look a talent.

Personally I’m unsure how I feel about the signing of Charles Cook.
He’s had a very good 6 months where he’s got a lot of goals and assists but prior to that his numbers were very low and I never thought he was much of a threat. He’s also 25 - maybe it’s just took him a while to develop and now he’s growing with each game.
I suppose if he was replacing Wright etc then it would be an improvement but not for Boyle. We need a player who has proven ability to replace him and shown it pretty consistently
I suppose at a club like Hibs you’re never going to sign the finished article so need to take punts on guys like him, ones with issues or guys with potential.
Personally always been impressed with Joseph Hungbo who is at county on loan and plays on the opposite wing.

We need new additions in the final third and quick.
Could get rid of about 6 with no issues.
We need a real quality attacker that has pace, can beat a man, chip in with goals and assists. A Barrie McKay, Zemmama etc
This last couple of games show how reliant we were on Boyle.
Also Melkersen needs to play. If we’re paying 400k for a youth player he needs to be good enough to go in.
Hallberg
Gogic
Allan
Are clearly not in his plans so get shot of them. James scott is on loan and can hardly get game time, so let’s get rid of him too. Bradley got recalled yet can’t get a game, send him back out.
Drey Wright hasn’t been the answer for 18 months and that isn’t going to change now - get rid.
We need to start being ruthless and stop kidding ourselves with the recruitment of young, exciting players chat. We done that with two - Tait and Mackay who have been sent out on loan.

The transfer business this month - which initially, on paper looked good - is starting to look a bit weird.
I don’t really get this formation and style of play of Maloney’s, therefore I find it a bit challenging to understand the attributes required in a player to play in his team.
Mitchell looked rapid and I’m looking forward to seeing more. But where does he fit in other than Doig’s position? Did we really need an upgrade or competition for Doig?
What are the 2 players behind the striker? Wide players, crossers? Or passers, threading in the lone striker? What do you need the striker to do? Surely tf an awful lot more than Kevin Nisbet ever offers. Doidge has had more poor than good games as a lone striker.
Our midfield continues to flatter to deceive, albeit Newell had an excellent start to the game tonight before falling away.
I haven’t got the first idea what Hibs and Maloney are trying to do and I’m not exactly loving watching it.
It just looks like we’re signing a load of decent players then trying to hammer square pegs into a round hole system.

Fully agree - hate to compare but had the Hearts game on at the same time as the Hibs game and their is a massive difference in players compared to our group.
They are aggressive, high energy, fit players and players who can assist like McKay and score Boyce. These guys and others aren’t kids and they will bully us in the derby and have some quality to break us down - unless we sort ourselves out and add more depth we are going to keep struggling.

Can’t see us getting anything from the derby. First time for a long time I feel they just have a better squad with more depth since they recruited better.
This is a massive week for Hibs with players going in and out - lots of deadwood but I hope we bring in players that suit the club and 1st team starters.

I get the majority of it with the exception of Mitchell unless we expect Doig to leave. I’m hoping Maloney isn’t planning on playing Doig on the left of a back 3 as that negates all of his strengths and he’s not good enough defensively there.
For me the 2 behind the striker are supposed to be Barrie McKay types. Guys that can run in behind, receive the ball on the half turn, beat a man, play a pass and score.
Hearts play the exact same system as us, the difference is they’ve been able to recruit for that system and we’re at the beginning of that phase.
But the next couple of signings are crucial and need to be immediate starters and improvements.
We need a sign Scott Bain end up with Scott Allan type of scenario again 😅

I really like the look of Rocky. Henderson looked bright when he came on. Mitchell the same. Mueller was quiet but its early days and he was still trying to get involved tonight and make something happen.
We need to keep improving the team, get the likes of Magennis back in the team and try to shift as much of the dead wood who simply arent good enough/arent contributing enough.

Quality number 10/ behind the striker - Jamie McGrath/Snodgrass
Another player for that position with pace - Charles cook?
Out

More in depending on how many we can get rid of.
That would then allow our decent enough starting 11 players to be decent options off the bench. I fear we’ll be putting far too much pressure on Melkersen otherwise.

Do you just judge players on stats you read on Wikipedia or transfermarkt?
He came on, did nowt but hit one long ball over the top that Doidge didn’t exactly miss a sitter with.
I’m not saying he’s a bad player or anything and he might end up being brilliant but the idea he did well as he hit one long ball that our forward got onto is nonsense.

What is everyone’s thoughts on Cadden?
Not a position I think we urgently need to strengthen but he finds himself in some fantastic positions (admittedly down to his incredible fitness levels) without creating too many chances for the strikers.
He flashes balls across alot that look good but these are normally 100mph and a good bit ahead of the strikers. It’s easy to say the striker should be there but I just think for the amount of times he’s in those positions the quality needs to be better.

Again I agree he’s been one of our better players and he has created chances for the forwards - Nisbet at Parkhead the prime example.
Was just curious if people thought someone maybe a bit more technical or composed in the final third would do any better.

Final ball isn’t always there - but sometimes it is.

I totally agree with you. Really like him, quality player, just has to show better composure at times.
A striker can’t get on the end of half his balls as either a) he’s too quick and then rifles it across, or b) if they were to get on the end of it they’d have to be offside. Occasionally you need to pick someone out when you get into that position rather than just melt it across the face.

Cadden needs to stay fit - this happened before he found form then got an injury.
He’s been good last few games - just need strikers or midfield to get on the end of the crosses.
Saying that out central midfield don’t contribute many goals and we need more goals and assists from front players.

I honestly don’t remember the one being flashed across the front of the goal (I’ve given my excuses on another thread), the ball over the top for Doidge I’m maybe not giving him enough credit for but I’m surprised if anyone saw him come on and thought he really impacted how we played. We were terrible before he came on and just as bad, if not worse after. If he had a couple of good moments I’m not giving him enough credit for then I’ll hold my hands up and apologise for that.

I just don’t think he’s the best technically that’s all.
I think his delivery is good also, but it’s always fizzed in at a rapid speed - in fairness I imagine he’d have more assists if Doidge was playing.
But, maybe a slightly more technical or composed player lifts his head in those positions and picks someone out with a clipped ball, cut back etc.
Like I said though, Cadden works hard to get in those positions and creates alot of them himself.

I think him and doig are workhorses, they get through a power of running up and down the pitch but there is little subtelty to their play. When they get the ball in the last third they will put it into the box. Nisbet isn't the type of striker that thrives on that.

I do think he sometimes makes bad decisions. He’ll play in a ball that looks good but in reality there was no realistic chance of anyone getting on the end of it - leaving you (unfairly on this occasion) pointing the finger at the striker(s).
There was one tonight that looked good, but in actual fact to get it past the defender he had to hit it at a pace that made it impossible to get on the end of, therefore crossing in that position was the wrong choice.
But it looked like he’d hit a decent ball in.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Newell and Mcgrath midfield
Hope we are still in for him - versatile too

This is exactly the point I’m making and glad someone else gets it.
Anywhere else on the pitch, or even crosses into the box that’s not on a team mates head or to their feet fans say aw that’s brutal. But for some reason the cross whipped across the face of goal is always considered brilliant even when there might be no realistic chance of anyone getting on it.

I’d say check out Celtic’s second goal and how a striker gets across the face of a defender a couple of yards out from goal. His crosses are fine it’s the lack of someone bursting a gut to get on the end of them strikers and midfielders IMO.

So what's the alternative then?
He's played a ball that looks good to you, me, the commentators, the pundits on Sportscene etc. Surely it's up to the striker(s) to gamble on that and get in the box for once?
He should have about 10 assists so far this season. The problem isn't Cadden.

There was very little pace on the ball in the Celtic goal, he side foots it, and if the player misses it it’s probably on target. Majority of Caddens is way ahead of the striker (at more of an angle) and goes miles wide of goal at high pace. Cadden is often quicker also which means he’s miles ahead of our players getting into the box.

Some of his crosses are fine and deserve better.
Some aren’t and don’t.
I thought he might have had a few assists in the Cove game if the striker had done his job. Even in that game I thought he put in one or two that were aesthetically pleasing but with no realistic chance of a player getting on the end of.
I wouldn’t be changing him and he is a player I like. I just don’t think he’s faultless and he’s made the odd bad call.

I like Cadden. As has been mentioned he rarely looks up to pick a player out and many of his crosses are flashed across the box. I put this down to a lack of pace as he's always under pressure when crossing and can't find that extra yard to give himself the chance to look up.
That said he does get the ball in to relatively good positions in spit of not picking anyone oit. Given how often he does this I expect Nisbet and the midfielders to be gambling more often and busting a gut to get on the end of them. It's why I'd start Doidge ahead of Nisbet. He's works harder to get on the end of crosses, high or low.

All of the signings have impressed me from the short time we’ve seen of them so far. Rocky looks a great addition at the back and I think we’ll see a big difference on Saturday with Porto back in our ability to play out of the defence. The major problem we have is the front 3. He’s given Nisbet a chance to prove himself but I think Doidge has done enough in the 70 minutes or so he’s had in the last 2 games to deserve a start on Sunday. I think Doidge could do well with the right players off him. We desperately need a good quality Boyle replacement and I hope we go out and spend good money on one. Do that and get rid of the deadwood in that area of the park. That would give Mueller, a new signing, Henderson and Magennis as options for the 2 positions in behind the striker. Maloney must know that this is never going to work if the likes of Josh Campbell and Drey Wright are playing in there.
If I’m being greedy I would like another cm too but we need to have players that are going to cause problems and create openings with good movement off the ball in the front 3. We didn’t have that tonight

The obvious names - Charles Cook, McGrath, Johnson and Barker will do the rounds over the next couple of days I’m sure.
But Hibs here are a couple of different ones to look at
Yan Dhanda - CM/CAM - Swansea - 23 years old - Out if contact in summer
Dan Crowley - CAM - Free Agent - 24 years old
You’re welcome. Now bring in them or some alternative attacking players.

We need someone who can dribble past the opposition or be confident beating a player 1v1.
Lots of passing last night but we need to be better trying to unbalance the opposition.

Yes. Especially Mikey Johnstone. The loss of Boyle abs without a decent replacement will end our season. Last nights game, we would have just fed the ball the Boyle and we might have nicked a goal.
We need a Boyle replacement and an attacking midfielder. I feel we are heading to a difficult period as on current form Hearts will beat us on Tuesday.

Our form over the past 5 games is won 3, drawn 1 and lost 1 (and that loss is probably the toughest fixture in the league). Hearts is won 3 lost 2.

Whoever we bring in now needs to be ready to straight in to the team, preferably on Saturday. We can't be signing any more players who need 2,3,4 weeks to get up to speed.

Driving back last night Malky Mackay was being interviewed and said he felt the Jan window was all about getting players who would improve the first eleven …not about squad players ..thought that was a decent rule of thumb to me . Not sure we’ve done that , we’ve been wider in our recruitment…could do with at least one more first eleven starter in before window closes

It some stick SM is getting for the style of play he is trying to implment. I actually think the players are doing really well . It is very much a work in progress and undoubtedly we need to upgrade some of our players . Midfield in particular Campbell and Doyle are for me players that could be upgraded
Playing this style we need a direct striker with a bit of pace .
So three players I think SM is aware of that .

I agree. As it stands, I don’t think it’s been a good window despite the fact we’ve been busy. We’ve sold our best player and we’ve not really had anybody able to come in and give us the real boost that we need, particularly attacking wise.
Longer term it might work out with the likes of Melkerson but not sure how much it’s going to help us between now and the end of the season. I’d have Henderson and Mitchell in on Saturday to try and freshen things up and give us something different in the final third

Looks like more of a midfielder but definitely not scored many. Work permit probably going to be an issue again. I’d imagine it’s more a development signing than straight into the first team.
