Macron is an odious little thacherite tart but Zemmourand and le pen are the nearest two rivals at the bookies and they are nazis. Sad that a large Western country has not even 30/1 odds of a left wing leader at the next election and less chance than the far right

Le Pen will as usual fall at the second round should she get there. Zemmour is a nasty dangerous piece of work but again, the French system should ensure stable forces defeat the extremists at the second round.

If the Left could rally around a single candidate they’d have a solid 25%ish which would be enough to be the most popular single party, but it’s the usual story with Melenchon and Hidalgo and the others fighting amongst themselves. I don’t think the French people give two ****s about the election and won’t do until March or April next year.

That's basically what the EU has been working on since before the negotiations even started.

The tory negotiating team was too thick and arrogant to recognise it with their preconceived idea that Britain ruled the waves; a major world power, the EU had better capitulate at every demand or else, blah, blah ...

Meat carcasses sent to EU for butchering amid UK worker shortage (msn.com) (https://www.msn.com/en-gb/money/news/meat-carcasses-sent-to-eu-for-butchering-amid-uk-worker-shortage/ar-AAQgPy1?ocid=msedgntp)

One problem for pork producers is that any meat exported to the EU for butchering would not be allowed to be labelled as British pork when reimported to the UK for sale.

The move to export meat for processing will cost an additional £1,500 for each lorryload of carcasses, including fees for transport, as well as customs requirements introduced since Brexit, such as an export health certificate for each consignment

Brexit wipes £17bn off UK trade with the EU in just three months (thelondoneconomic.com) (https://www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/brexit-wipes-17bn-off-uk-trade-with-the-eu-in-just-three-months-300061/?fbclid=IwAR2MqlUabJ-2SgUweWGX0a4HN972m738fWz33TEuNo5ami5X8dXcr8dz-MQ)

Brexit red tape has slashed £17 billion from UK trade with the European Union in just three months as businesses struggle to keep up with new costs, a spending watchdog revealed.

Despite promises from the Leave campaign that red tape would fade after Britain quit the EU, UK companies have had to fill in an astonishing 48 million customs declarations and 140,000 export health certificates in the eight months since the UK quit the single market and customs union , according to the National Audit Office (NAO).

The watchdog’s report also warned that the government could face action for not “complying with international trading rules” – but that when controls are finally introduced, they will bring “significant risks” to traders.

Not surprised. We have to fill in customs declarations for our kids’ christmas presents this year. Think they’ll be getting Red Cross parcels this time round ;-)

Was perhaps a specific and limited type of red tape that Vote Leave had in mind, such as record-keeping in tax havens.

beggars belief some still think Brexit is braw, personally i think those that do are either totally bonkers, or at the wind-up, or both :agree:

UK’s Brexit losses more than 178 times bigger than trade deal gains | The Independent (https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-trade-deals-australia-new-zealand-b1952442.html?utm_content=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Main&utm_source=Twitter&fbclid=IwAR1kjDDb2tVBPEqXQjoixWwCd5Hk1GjhFL3mXqUvD qI9BU_8f3eaPB-QBO4#Echobox=1636277784-1)

All of Boris Johnson’s new post-Brexit (https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-northern-ireland-sefcovic-frost-b1952265.html) trade deals put together will have an economic benefit of just £3 to £7 per person over the next 15 years, according to the government’s own figures.
The tiny economic boost – amounting to just 0.01 to 0.02 per cent of GDP, and less than 50p per person a year – is dwarfed by the economic hit from leaving the EU, which the government estimates at 4 per cent of GDP over the same period.

Is that not just Visa Credit Cards? Think debits will still be fine?

I heard on the news it was UK issued visa credit cards from January 19th. Debit and all other credit cards unaffected.
I 'd imagine an agreement will be reached before then

Visa seem to be annoying everyone just now, sure RBS sent me an email the other month saying they are scrapping visa and going with mastercard instead so to expect a new debit card

I felt a punch I my guts when I read that Von Bronckhorst's appointment was subject to a work permit.

I don't know if work permits were a thing in the first 15-20 years of the EEC/EU but they never were during the time I paid attention.

I'm sure he will get it, if he hasn't already but it sickens me that this is how we are now.

horrendous........ and if it wasn't so sad it'd be funny.....
"But Steve is wrong, asylum seekers do not have to seek refuge in the first country they arrive in.

It's a common misconception fed by political rhetoric about passing through "safe countries" but there is no rule requiring asylum seekers to do this.

Somewhat ironically, given how many of the people I message have been vocal supporters of Brexit in the past, Britain did have more tools at its disposal when it was a member of the EU.

The Dublin Regulations required asylum seekers to register a claim in the first EU country they reached and for the decision of that country to be final.

As for his point about using the right processes, it's the most reasonable thing he says, but the fact of the matter is they barely exist.

As Baron Kerr told the House of Lords last week schemes like the Syrian and Dubs are no longer in place."

A total pain in the arse and, frankly, they just seem to pluck the tax amount from the air. The post office chuck a handling charge on top as well.

Facts are important though. That's not the M20. It's a dual carriageway. It's obvious from the signage it's not a motorway. In fairness the A20 dual carriageway goes to Dover, but it's that sort of sloppiness that undermines. I'm anti-Brexit to the end of my big toe, but I was already thinking watching the first link to the video "how do we know when this was taken?". That's me as someone onside. Saying it's the M20 in the second would have me, was I a Brexiter, jogging on happily.

Is there a confirmation of the film?

Lorry queues from the Port of Dover are now so long the huge tailbacks are appearing on Google (https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/google) satellite images.
Images from space show hundreds of lorries lining the roads around the port after months of chaos delaying crossings.

The delays are being blamed on extra controls which have come into place following Brexit (https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/brexit).

What an entitled twat.

When this guy was younger he imagined the Sex Pistols were the vanguard of some kind of socialist nirvana where there would be a revolution blah, diddy. That was even though one of the main messages the pistols put across was not to trust or invest too much in rock and roll bands. When the pistols split up he then thought that Bruce Springsteen and The Tome Robinson Band were the real saviours.

Never paid that much attention to him until he cropped up supporting Brexit ( in particular from the flag ****ging angle, tub thumping) now look the state of him. Never done a proper days work in his puff.

The claims made for Brexit benefits so far are a mish-mash of things that are untrue, or true but misleading or of trivial or questionable value. Meanwhile, the future plans are aspirational, often vague and frequently unrealistic.

That so much of the report is waffle or padding, allied with the highly dubious nature of many of the claims, suggests that the case for genuine Brexit benefits was found to be so weak that on its own it would have made for an embarrassingly thin report.

What is far more important than what is contained in the report is what is omitted. For even if Brexit were to have all the benefits claimed, how can they be evaluated when there is not a single reference to its costs?

On the economic front, there are already sound measurements of the costs to date, and widely-accepted predictions of the costs to come. On trade, in particular, we have already seen the impact of new barriers on businesses, especially smaller ones, and we know that this is going to get worse as the full import controls get introduced. We also already have evidence of how Brexit is causing tax increases. And on regulation, we are beginning to see the business costs of duplication. Yet there is absolutely no assessment of these or any other Brexit costs.

In consequence, as well as being deeply flawed in many of the claims it makes, the entire report is fundamentally meaningless.

How can Jacob Rees-Mogg find ‘Brexit opportunities’? They don’t exist

This is what Rees-Mogg should be reading in his mailbag. That Brexit (https://www.theguardian.com/politics/eu-referendum) has inflicted great losses on this country; that the supposed offsets for those losses don’t offset them at all; and that there are next to no “opportunities” worthy of the name. Brexit is a rank failure.

Interesting discussion on Twitter about the renewed attention given to Putin's Russia and his actions to influence democracy in other countries (e.g. Trump) will possibly lead to further investigation into Russian funding of Leave.EU and the pro Brexit lobby. It is hoped these investigations will be international in nature, with other countries interested to discover the extent of Russian involvement. I think that the UK Govt had effectively shut down discussion of the funding of the Brexit campaign e.g. by sitting on the Russia Report. Perhaps now we can reopen that particular can of worms.

I’m 55 and I’ve never used it and never been educated in it.

The Metric Handbook of design data for architects, written to help them understand how big things are in the new measurements, was published in 1968 when the system was already in use across the industry. It’s still in print.

Property industry never quite converted though.

I reckon that, to have been educated in imperial and to have used it, you will no longer be working. That’s the Tory base, though.

Defra approves use of bee killing pesticide, which has been banned for years and remains banned in Europe.

If you buy products for your garden to treat blackspot on roses or aphids, it (eg Roseclear, comes in dark blue bottle, widely available)almost definitely contains neonics and you are contributing to the collapse in bee populations.

Tories wasting more money.

A scathing report from the cross-party culture media and sport select committee has concluded that the Festival of Brexit is a waste of public money and set for failure.

The £120 million event, which is now officially known as “Unboxed: Creativity in the UK”, takes place this year, but it has been heavily criticised by MPs who said ministers do “not know what it was”.

The committee took issue with the framing of the project, which officials at the culture department billed as including “something for everyone” – despite being advised that it should not “be all things to all people”.

“Vague”
They were was also concern that very few people knew that the event was happening or what it involves, with its purpose remaining “vague”.

“Since the event’s inception in 2018, the aims for Festival UK* 2022/Unboxed: Creativity in the UK have been vague and ripe for misinterpretation by the press and public at large,” the cross party report, released on Wednesday said.

“We see no evidence to refute such scepticism now. The desire for it to seemingly cater to everyone, everywhere, is a recipe for failure and investing £120 million in something when the government, by their own admission, ‘did not know what it was’ is an irresponsible use of public money.”

“Muddled approach”
The event’s organisers have explicitly rejected the “festival of Brexit” label and say it is in fact “a UK-wide groundbreaking celebration of creativity taking place in 2022”.

I have no idea whether the P&O situation has been affected either way by Brexit. Of course my predisposition is that Brexit won't have helped, but I have no evidence to support that view.

However, it is interesting to read the RMT Union's views prior to the referendum, especially those relating to seafarers and workers rights. The RMT are of course, and rightly upset about today's treatment of their members.
