It’s a mess but it’s certainly not Thatcherite. It’s naked English Nationalism.

Not at all. It's nature's way of controlling population growth.

I'm in the process of a career change. I thought for my last 10 years before my pension I'd like to do something that didn't involve much brain work or physical exertion, so I've enrolled in a 5 month course that will qualify me as a professional driver that will qualify me to drive almost anything anywhere. To get a feel for the job and maybe some tips from long in the tooth long distance drivers I joined a Facebook group for German HGV drivers, absolutely brilliant and a great source of information for the challenges ahead. After this initial positive experience I thought I could widen my horizons by joining a similar UK group. What a ****ing mistake that was. The place is a cesspool of racist dimwits and endless threads full of hate and crazy conspiracy theories dehumanizing anyone non British. The comparison between both groups was like night and day. Wtf is wrong with this country?

Well he didn’t say all haulage drivers were like that, he was talking about two message boards and how those represent both countries. There’s no doubt in my mind that if you have right wing anti immigrant views it’s more acceptable to be public about those views in the UK than it is in Germany.

The reason I asked the question is if every post on there was the same it’s probably something to do with the editorial policy of the moderators encouraging those views, rather than all haulage drivers.

Exactly, my post was more about what is deemed to be acceptable language and from what I've seen, xenophobia is more acceptable in UK forums than it is in Germany. There's obviously good historical reasons as to why racism and racist language receives less acceptance in Germany, but the problem is not just a historical one, but also educational and political.

I don't think this is confined to HGV drivers. I think it's prevalent in many different closed groups where racism and xenophobia is allowed to fester without being opposed. I just think that this particular nest of rancidity I've accidentally stumbled upon is particularly odious, however I'm sure there's worse out there.

I worked for years with predominately white, working class, blue collar workers from all corners of the UK. It never failed to disappoint me when the underlying racism and xenophobia of a sizeable percentage surfaced. Listening to locker room conversations amongst outwardly everyday common or garden Brits sickened me. I'm glad I'm out of it.

Apologies, upon reflection and a good sleep after a long, long shift I see where you're coming from now, so again, I apologise.

I did have a chuckle though when you mentioned the lack of physical and mental exertion needed in the heavy haulage industry, if you're looking for an easy ride in your last 10 years of work then you may well be in for a rude awakening in your chosen path, hopefully not though. :greengrin

As for your quoted post, unfortunately I hear talk like that all too often, there's a real lack of moral in what used to be a really close knit community, some real comradeship has been lost over the years. Times gone by drivers would congregate in all the various usual towns and villages when their hours were up and they'd frequent the local clubs, pubs and B&B's before heading back out on the road. Now, with modern vehicles, they're forced to sleep in cab in some dank layby or a generic truckstop if you're lucky enough to have an employer who pays for it. Average pay has reduced over the years and unfortunately a lot of drivers blame foreign workers for that and the many failings the industry has at the moment. I'd hazard a guess that construction and hospitality are harbouring the same kind of hatred. I'm in no way trying to defend the halfwit that wrote the quoted post as it's obviously indefensible and more to the point it's factually incorrect.

Daily Mail and The Sun are even worse for xenophobia and racism. The UK tabloid press is a cesspool of idiocy which panders to the lowest common denominator.

Fair enough Andy and thanks for the reply. I get the frustrations that some occupational groups have, but the blame doesn't lie at the door of foreigners taking advantage if legal opportunities that are open to them and especially not those who have fled home in the search of safety and a better life. Ironically this particular group are full of praise for the actual source of their misery and by that I mean consecutive UK governments that have allowed the race to the bottom.

I'm under no illusions as to the arduous nature of my chosen career change and have done a lot of research into the industry over here. Anything that passes through Germany and most of what arrives in Germany is firmly in the hands of Eastern European haulage organisation, however the vast majority of that what moves within the country is safely in German hands and controlled by German legislation and union tariff agreements. The UK could have done similar if the government was willing to do so or the unions were powerful enough to force them to but unfortunately they didn't. Germany loves its trades and apprenticeships and driving is no different. To be able to drive commercially here, you must hold a qualification gained through apprenticeship or by having relevant proven experience and an intensive lateral entry course and completion of state controlled examinations. Without completing the aforementioned and having received the relevant certification, drivers working commercially face fines of €5000 and employers €15000 everytime they get caught. I'm hoping to pick up a job delivering fuel to petrol stations where the money is good and the shifts ensure I'm guaranteed to get home every night, if successful it will be my first job ever where I will be home every night.

If that doesn't work out with the tankers then I'm lucky enough to live in an area that is pretty much one huge logistics centre. I'm just south of Berlin and the whole area is a huge hub for not only goods coming into the country but also a staging post for supplying Berlin with everything it needs. This will be my 4th occupation since leaving school and I've been lucky enough to have had jobs that many kids dream of doing, all these jobs have been difficult in their own respect but if I had to choose I'd say being a trucker is likely the easiest of them all.

Apologies for going off on a tangent but I am rather excited about the new challenge.

Welsh government threatening to take the UK government to court over the internal market bill.

https://gov.wales/written-statement-possible-legal-challenge-uk-internal-market-bill

The Welsh Government is determined to do everything we can to protect the Senedd in the face of the outrageous attack on its legislative competence made by the UK Government through the UK Internal Market Bill, to which the Senedd has rightly refused consent.

The Bill will today complete the process of Commons Consideration of Lords Amendments. If the Bill is enacted in its present form, this would leave the ambit of the devolution settlement in Wales uncertain and undermined.

Regulation-making powers in the Bill would open the Government of Wales Act 2006 (GoWA) to very wide substantive future amendment, and the powers of the Senedd and Welsh Government to serious diminution, at the hands of the UK Government.

The provisions in the Bill are also so wide and deep in operation that they risk constraining the legislative space for the Senedd in areas which are currently devolved.

We have therefore today formally notified the UK Government that should the UK Parliament enact the Bill in its present form, I intend to take immediate action to seek a declaration from the Administrative Court that the ambit of constitutional legislation cannot lawfully be cut down in this way and that the ensuing Act cannot be interpreted so as to have that effect.

We have asked for a response from the UK Government within 14 days.

I will keep Members fully informed of developments.

Let's hope so, but I'm confident now. The government are in the crazy position of telling the EU to break some of their fundamental trade rules to benefit a country which has left the club. It probably will, particularly if there's no deal. The fishermen wanted Brexit to stop the French fishing in UK waters. If it's a no deal Brexit they may end up with more fish to themselves, but less people to sell it too = lower prices. Miles of queues at Dover won't help them.

You'd think the torygraph of all papers would know that the finance houses make the business decisions to follow the money to the best and growing markets with the most customers who are easier to trade with.

If the fish had a choice they might fancy their chances in Europe as well.

Not if it was a decent military grade, Eastern European lilo like the one my dad brought back from Poland in the 60s. It took about a week to inflate and weighed a ton. My brother and I tried everything to burst the fu"*"r including stabbing it repeatedly with a carving knife, but without success. There is a solution to the transportation of goods to and from France, with the huge lorry park ready to be used, and the vast majority of goods in containers on articulated trailers, could French lorries not be brought to the lorry park and the tractor unit switched with a British one, and the same for goods going the other way? Theoretically possible, but logistically a nightmare. Most of those trucks will have follow up loads to shift. I know 2guys stucknear Birmingham who delivered to Stoke on Friday and were due to pick up in Coventry today before returning with that load to Germany. Luckily their goods aren't perishable but it's looking likely that they'll be spending Christmas in a UK lay by.

I genuinely have no idea as to whether this new strain is a greater danger, but the restrictions are being described in the German media as 'preventative' and 'temporary'.

I think they don't really know how dangerous it is either but it seems like a reasonable reaction until they know one way or the other.

I just hope this hasn't been over-hyped* by Westminster to cover for their own mistakes, as that would count among the biggest cock-ups in history.

https://newsthump.com/2020/12/21/brexiters-left-stunned-after-several-eu-countries-demonstrate-easy-control-of-their-own-borders/

Leave voters were left reeling this morning after learning that a number of continental countries had somehow managed to control their own borders whilst still being part of the European Union.

France, Italy, Germany and Belgium have all banned flights and ferries from the UK into their countries, in an attempt to prevent the spread of toxic nationalist right-wing populist ideology, and also the Coronavirus.

Simon Williams, from Dover, was stunned by the news. “They, they just can’t DO that!” he stuttered, turning a new and deeper hue of gammon.

“Nigel Farage told us that being in the EU meant we couldn’t control our own borders and yet those countries are part of the EU, and have only gone and bloody controlled their own borders – just like THAT!

“Surely that wasn’t all a lie to get us to vote for an economically catastrophic break from our largest trading partner just to line the pockets of disaster capitalists like him… was it?”

One French citizen, Christophe James, told us – after he had stopped laughing – “Oui, it turned out to be remarkably easy to control our border. We just, you know, said ‘Let’s shut the border with plague island’ and within a few hours the restrictions were in place.

“After all, what does Britain have to offer us at the moment apart from lengthy delays at the border crossing and a new and more virulent strain of COVID-19?”

According to reports, a number of builders were seen this morning bricking up the Channel Tunnel from the Calais end.

It's not just UK citizens suffering as I'm sure you're only too aware of right now, plenty EU citizens stranded in the UK and wanting to get home. There is a growing feeling of "you've made your bed, now lie in it" though. The EU can't help the UK, only the UK electorate can do that.

Did you hear about poor Lord Lawson. He applied to the French authorities for a post brexit residence permit, so he could use his house in Cahors all year round. The French authorities turned his request down, as he's not a tax resident in France. Now he has to sell it. https://t.co/kU6ne0sUt4

Here is the government's statement: "Everything that the British public was promised during the 2016 referendum and in the general election last year is delivered by this deal."
"We have taken back control of our money, borders, laws, trade and our fishing waters Money we already had control over, Laws will have to be rewritten first, trade assume the EU will still be our largest market, fishing waters, apart from the 75% quotas for European boats
"The deal is fantastic news for families and businesses in every part of the UK. Probably better than No Deal
"We have signed the first free trade agreement based on zero tariffs and zero quotas that has ever been achieved with the EU. Or, we continue where we were before with the EU
"The deal is the biggest bilateral trade deal signed by either side, covering trade worth £668bn in 2019. Or, we continue where we were before with the EU because anything else was so bad
"The deal also guarantees that we are no longer in the lunar pull of the EU, we are not bound by EU rules, there is no role for the European Court of Justice and all of our key red lines about returning sovereignty have been achieved. Yay, sovereignty, whatever that means
"It means that we will have full political and economic independence on 1st January 2021." No you wont, we are still dependent on trade with the EU
"A points-based immigration system will put us in full control of who enters the UK and free movement will end. The only reason for Brexit
"We have delivered this great deal for the entire United Kingdom in record time, and under extremely challenging conditions, which protects the integrity of our internal market and Northern Ireland’s place within it.
"We have got Brexit done and we can now take full advantage of the fantastic opportunities available to us as an independent trading nation, striking trade deals with other partners around the world." What about Scotland? We didn't vote for this

Will there be room for it on her mantelpiece beside her Boris VE day plate, Boris Candlestick holder and Boris Action Man figure with moving eyes and quick release trousers?

It's fine lads Douglas Ross says this is a good deal for Scotland

Thank goodness for that, for a moment there I thought we were losing far more than we gained

What I expect to see within 10-15 years:

- Independent Scotland
- Independent Wales
- United Ireland
- Chaos in England

What a miserable bunch on here. No deal looked likely. Now we got what looks like a good deal. Seems like some of you just want this to fail for other agendas.

It’s not a good deal its a bad deal. An unacceptable deal but its just not a terrible, disastrous no deal.

This is called ‘moving the overtoun window’ and is a major part of the Trump/Tory playbook.

A good deal was what we had as part of the EU. This is a deal of some sort and will be spun by the Tory press to be some sort of amazing, unique deal that only Johnson could have gotten.

I'm glad we have some deal, as it's better than no deal.

However, it's quite clearly worse than what we already had, so I'm not ready to celebrate. I'm also of the opinion that "The Devil Is In The Detail", so I'm going to wait and see how it all pans out before forming an opinion.

It's a failure no matter the deal or if there had been a no deal. Varying degrees but there is no "good" coming out of this for the vast majority of people.

It will be a win for those Scottish fishermen who export their catch directly to Europe and the processing sector will be delighted. There will probably be more winners than losers.

Absolutely. Compared to the deal May was prepared to go with this will be a big boost for the Scottish fishing industry.

Scottish Tories certainly seem to think it’s a good deal and we will have no problems dealing with the EU. Means an independent Scotland will have a good deal with rUK.[emoji106]

But, undoubtedly, the arrangements we had as part of the EU were better. Any "victory" in the agreement is just damage limitation. That is how it should be analysed.
