Two games. They won the previous one 4-1 v Russia. In 1992 Denmark won the competition and shouldn't even have been there, maybe a similar run this year against all the odds again?

There are certainly far better sides in the other half of the draw but they might fancy their chances of getting to the final being in the easier side of the draw.

No surprise at all in this result with Austria very much in this game and on the front foot.

Klinsman well ahead of the English pundits on this occasion as he knows nearly all the Austrian players are Bundesliga players and key men in their teams as well. They aren't plucky underdogs at all.

The comment should have been ‘excellent save but you would expect that from a keeper of his quality’ but no Danny seemed surprised that this young lad from Italy was indeed half decent!

Shame the 90 minutes were not on the level of extra time…good final 30 though and Italy squeak through.

Yip. How can you do expert analysis if you don't have the basic facts to hand. The unfortunate thing is that the bulk of the viewers probably only want to hear about players that they know or are on an English club's radar. Hence they play to their audience.

How often was the referee and var man referred to last night? The referee was fine but the var man took ages to come to a decision. He could do with visiting other countries to find out a better way to do it.

They also want any team that is a potential danger to England to get beaten. Hence the line that Italy were lucky to get away with a disallowed goal which was often repeated.

The commentators will not settle down until England are out.

England have many excellent studio pundits in Lineker, Ferdinand and some of the women but the match commentators tend to get caught up in English nationalism or patronising exceptionalism and parochial remarks though I wouldn't castigate them for this (not that you are) as they are supporters who play to their audience.

The welsh have all sounded quite bitter after the denmark game. Bale, Gunter, the manager etc. They were totally outplayed by a very good team but you wouldnt have thought that listening to them. Suck it up boys...thats the way it goes sometimes.

The last 16 won't be enough as the English absolutely crave respect as a football nation as their record in big tournaments in quite appauling compared to the other major football nations.

They crumble on big game occasions and at pressure situations such as penalty shoot outs which is the reason why they now work so hard at the mental strength side.

English exceptionalism runs through their society but I admire the football operations side as they strive to try to conquer their demons.

Yep, that's what I was thinking as well. Bale walked out of the interview on ITV. For me they were quite lucky in one or two of the earlier games, particularly Switzerland. They made a big thing about only losing 1-0 to Italy but neglected to mention it was basically an Italy 2nd 11 with 8 first team players out.

He's got a point tho. Scotland and England had two out of three group games at home (not that it did us any good mind you) and all of them in the UK. Wales did a tour of Europe for all four of their fixtures and had no fans (legally) travelling to back them. I think if he'd come out with those comments before the tournament he'd have been accused of getting his excuses in early. As it was they came through probably a tougher group than Scotland's and looked dead on their feet after about 10 minutes yesterday. I think it's fair enough for him to have a pop.

England have many excellent studio pundits in Lineker, Ferdinand and some of the women but the match commentators tend to get caught up in English nationalism or patronising exceptionalism and parochial remarks though I wouldn't castigate them for this (not that you are) as they are supporters who play to their audience.
