If England do win it, they will have beaten every team in the tournament on their way bar one, then I'm invoking the traditional Scottish logic and declaring us Joint European Champions.

Scotland will be due part of the cup through the Barnett Formula

Of course and if they win it that can be the reason why it wasn’t such an achievement, easy draw, home games blah blah blah.

Ukraine, Denmark, the worst Germany in history, all but one game at Wembley... surely you must see it's been an easy route to the final

Ah the easy run to the final chat…….again. The usual comfort blanket nonsense when England are doing well.It is true though. Compare Italy's run of games to England's.

Still, like I said earlier, you can only beat what's put in front of you, and they are doing very well on that front! With all games at home from here on in, they are rightly favourites to win now.

No it’s tournament football, no easy games, you have included Denmark who we haven’t even played yet, did they have an easy route to the semi final too? We always seem to beat a team who just happen to be the worst team in their history too!

This is quite obviously very true on this occasion. Add to the permanence of being at Wembley.

They really have no excuse this time.

Inclined to agree with you, though the Wembley advantage has been huge. Having said that, you need to make that home advantage count, which England have done well (and we did terribly).

Denmark will possibly be the toughest test yet - they're a very good side and they're still clearly galvanised by what happened to Eriksen. Still, it's a very talented young English team and they shouldn't be afraid of any of the remaining 3 teams.

England have been fortunate the way the tournament has panned out but to be fair apart from home ties and the reintroduction of fans other aspects have been outwith their control, they along with other sides including Italy and Spain are teams in transition and are progressing well.

England have a great squad. They should be reaching the semi final. Southgate is a likeable bloke not the arrogant type that usually manages them They played well against Ukraine and actually played some football. I can see and appreciate all that BUT I really struggle to watch anything to do with the Euros or indeed any news programme at present as their brilliance gets rammed down your throat on every news despatch. I want to watch the news and football but can't with the sound off. So as usual I've tried to watch the tournament from a fair perspective and admire the football and as ever I'm now back in the ABE box that the "British" media has pushed me to.
I've lots of English friends and would be happy for them but selfishly I can't face the avalanche of media noise that will come with a win. I should be a bigger and better person but I can't be.

Definitely not the worst Germany in history. 2004 and 2018 teams easily worse.

England have had a favourable draw, but actually they always had to play 2nd from the France, Germany, Portugal group, so it didn't exactly look easy then.

This is not the first time a host nation has gone far in a tournament.

Add in the fact England want the World Cup hosted in England in 2030 hence why they are trying to show off Wembley again and all the UEFA delegates are coming across.

They also have some incredible young players coming through the system.

Again all down to a strategy and a lot of money they invested in infrastructure. Sadly Scotland are miles behind the English set up.

TBF it’s pretty easy to play teams below you when you are ranked 4th in the world and 3rd is Brazil. Bar Belgium and France (who are both out) EVERY team is ranked lower than them.

Or just sour grapes

When you're one of the top ranked sides in the world (or indeed one of the top performers in any sport which features knock-out competitions), so-called 'easier runs' are surely the norm? We tend to moan about the tough draws Scotland get in qualifying but they're tough because we failed to reach a major tournament for 23 years and were consequently always in seeding pots which pretty much ensured tough draws.

But how it looked and the reality were totally different. Germany were poor before they played England and couldn't beat Hungary, in fact Hungary deserved to win on the night, and Ukraine were poor and only really qualified because Sweden had a man sent off. That said, it would be foolish to write off England, they've got some great young players, and they are definitely capable of beating better sides than the ones they've played, but I do feel Italy have better form as it stands, so we'll see.

On the other hand, France were knocked out by Switzerland, a team I'm confident England would have beaten. So perhaps it's just as valid to say all those teams avoided England. France, Portugal and Belgium weren't good enough to get to the latter stages. Italy look good and appear the team likeliest to stop England.

England are a decent side and done well. To have played Croatia, Germany, Czech and Scotland and not lost a goal is impressive, despite most games at Wembley. However, there's no question the competition is the weakest it's been in years. This England side would not get close to Spain or France from just a few years ago. Only team I can see giving them a game is Italy at this point.

Germany, poor as they were imagined to be, papped Portugal soundly and we’d probably all be thinking / hoping Portugal would’ve given England a game somehow.

I don't have a chip on my shoulder about England and I'll be perfectly comfortable if they win the tournament. Scotland are not in the same league as Southgate's team, that's a given, but the left side of the draw was much tougher than England's side. Every person I've spoken to about it in York feels the same and they're all England fans.

Oh they are a good team alright, with a population 10 times the size of ours, how much have they spent to get to this stage, with a relatively easy run to the semi final they bloody well should be favourites to win this and if you look at their record over the past 50 years and compare it like for like with the other 4 major football playing countries they are in fact pretty pisch. they get to play most of their games at home but according to some this does not give an advantage **** right off this is a huge advantage. France are a stronger personel wise than 3 or 5 years ago. They just fell to bits.

Its not the weakest its been in years. Portugal won the Euros in 2016 winning 1 match in normal time. That was a poor tournament. Italy were weak and only done so well because of Conte. France were good but bottled the final big time, and struggled to beat both Albania and Romania in the groups, and ROI in the last 16. Germany were decent but lacked a striker big time. Belgium lost to Wales. This tournament has been very good, a high level across the board, record amounts of goals etc and England haven't conceded a single one.

England have done well, thats it. They're good. No ifs or buts.

England’s defending impressed me last night during the 1st half.

They were under a wee bit of pressure with Ukraine finding little pockets of space but they were unable to create anything meaningful.

They then stepped it up a bit going forward in the second half and got the goals that killed the game off.

I actually thought that Ukraine were abysmal though. The defending for the first goal (which was always going to be significant) was pitiful and we’d be slaughtering Scotland of Hibs if they’d lost it.

I can’t see anything other than an England Italy final at this stage and ominously England look like they might have a few more gears to me. Italy have probably played more tough matches though, so will likely be more confident that they can take care of a tough match, given Scotland have probably given England their toughest match so far.

Italy have proved me wrong big time and deservedly beat the number one ranked team in the world. Some of their football was fantastic. England have won the games I'd have expected them to win apart from against us. I expect England to beat Denmark and reach the final. Italy or Spain will be a step up from anyone England have faced so far but with the final at Wembley will give them another huge advantage.

Portugal were poor against Germany but still put 3 past Hungary, and Germany were very fortunate to get anything against Hungary. In at least 2 of their games Germany didn't play with any recognized strikers. You're quite right to say England beat them fair and square but this German team is a very ordinary one. Compare them with the team that thrashed Brazil and went on to win the 2014 World Cup, the only European team to win it outside Europe, and there is obviously no comparison, I hope you agree. Even with all the top class players that Belgium have, Italy still beat them and deservedly so. IMO that is much better form than beating an average German side and a poor Ukrainian team but you might argue otherwise. On that basis I would pick Italy as the best team in the tournament so far, but I certainly wouldn't dismiss England lightly.

germany are certainly poorer than 2014, but they're far from Rubbish. They'll be right back in there with a very similar squad in 18 months time with Flick in charge.

Italy have been the best side, but struggled past a very average Austria side.

We are down to the last four with all of the teams left having a chance of lifting the trophy.

If I had to pick I have a wee sneaky for Spain especially if one of the strikers hits form at the right time.

Agree it’s been a good tournament.

I’m tired of people saying that ‘obviously the champions league is the pinnacle now’.

Obviously international sides aren’t as intensively coached as club teams but the quality of football has been good, and it’s more engrossing as a neutral than some clash between two clubs bankrolled by oligarchs or oil states.

:agree: Obviously on a purely technical level it’s true, because a manager like Pep has opportunities daily to transform a group of players into a tactical machine. International tournaments are far less tactically complex, it’s much more about winning individual battles and having a system everybody understands. As an armchair fan world cups and european championships are the pinnacle for me, I love the history and the way summer seems to revolve around it no matter who you speak to around the world there’s an enthusiasm that the champions league can’t get close to.

Generally excellent, not giving needless fouls and mostly ignoring the histrionics. VAR very good too.

Also agree with your summary: Italy favourites and playing great football but England are very solid if a little dull. I think that's going to be the final and think Italy will just shade it.

It's been a great tournament. Some unbelievable games referees have been very good indeed overall. Been some play acting from Italy recently but overall that seems on the decline & they seem to have found a much better balance with VAR.

I've got Spain in the sweep but I fancy Italy from what I've seen to date.

If England win it, fair does, they've grown into the tournament, played solidly and like you, I like Southgate, his approach and how he conducts himself.

My son has Italy in his brothers football teams sweepstake.

He gets 70 quid if Italy win.

Forza Italia!

I stuck £20 on England before the Germany game as an insurance bet at 4/1.

No striker in the Spain starting line up. I know Morata has been poor but why not give Moreno a try through the middle instead of playing him wide when you use him FFS.

I think it’s because of VAR of the flag goes up they don’t complete the phase of play if a goals scored they check anyway

Sometimes it's better to lose the first goal, is as bad as, being 2 nil up is the most dangerous score!!

Correct – if I remember my Euro 96 guidebook, that year the hosts (Italy) lost in the semis and the third-place playoff had a much higher attendance than the final, so they scrapped it after that.

I'd say the Danes are a wee step up to anyone England have played so far🤷*♂️still think England will win though.

I don't actually think Denmark are better than Germany, they just got a much easier draw. Germany would've beat Wales and the Czechs imo.

I think the Danes are better organised and better coached than the Germans, I don’t think Low really had his players working in that system. And there’s at least 5 danish players who are really world class imo, including the two centre backs and the keeper, which is just where you want your best players against England.

"Journo" having a bit of a mare there. They're very needy when it comes to who you're supporting, a bit like The Rangers fans, nobody likes us we don't care, but really they're desperate to be loved.

Denmark are a good side: well organised and have players that can create chances, even without Eriksson. However, I think England will be too good for them at Wembley. The only problem might be if England get nervous; they are under huge pressure from the country to win tonight.

Good bit of banter, The Cat had a wee go at him for being up his own arse and Rio replied that he's still probably watching the highlights of Scotland's draw with them.

I too have English family and friends so if they do eventually win I'll be happy enough for them.

With that said, I'll be happy enough if they lose.

At least it’s on ITV so we won’t need to put up with Jermaine Jenas. Can’t stand him.

Ferdinand is just like a big daft fan getting carried away with it all and he’s going to get so much stick if/when they get beat.

I can’t remember the radio programme, but did anyone hear the the arrogant tosser asking one of the Danish players how much it would mean to him and the Danish team to deprive England of their first major final in 54 years. The Danish guy shrugged it of saying more or less that he couldn’t give a toss about England and that he would be thrilled for Denmark to reach the final. Their arrogance and self importance is overwhelming.
