Not saying he’s at our level but he’s joint third on the top scorers list this season (so far)
See where he ends up on the scoring charts come the end of the season. I don't think he'll hold that spot, personally.

The thing I would disagree about immediately is that Doidge isn't a slightly better Nish, Nish's goalscoring record is far superior to Doidge's
We could argue till the cows come home about what Doidge brings to the team that Nish didn't but a centre forwards job is to score goals, Doidge other than a brief purple patch where every sclaff went in doesn't.
To be clear he was entitled to every sclaff going in, but I have seen nothing before or after to suggest such a patch is repeatable.
As for Lafferty he can GTF, odious individual who I wouldn't want anywhere near ER, particularly after he shafted us last time
No idea where you are getting stats from. Nish scored about half the goals Doidge does. Doidge is far superior in terms of goalscoring.

That's just inaccurate nonsense, Doidge's goal-scoring record is far superior to Colin Nish's no matter how you look at the figures.
FOR HIBS
Nish - 22 in 98 games (average 0.22 per game)
Doidge - 17 in 49 games (average 0.34 per game)
ENTIRE CAREER
Nish - 93 in 416 games ( average 0.22 per game)
Doidge - 132 in 300 games (average 0.44 per game)
You are entitled to have an opinion, you are not entitled to tell porkies
That will serve me right for not checking things out before posting
Honestly astonished by that apologies
I thought Nish's pre Hibs goalscoring record was one of the best in the SPL, sure I had seen that he was on of the SPL's top scorers somewhere
Apologies again, must do better

Greg Kiltie's contract expires in the summer IIRC.
Don't think he's one we'd be prioritising right now, however he's had a good season and I believe we've shown some interest in him previously.
I wonder if he's somebody we're eyeing up on a pre.

I can’t believe the rush some people are in to get rid of Doidge. He may not be pretty on the eye but he’s very effective and a good player to have.
19/20 = 19 in 39 appearances
20/21 = 6 goals in 26 appearances
Total = 25 in 65 appearances
Keep in mind this season he’s not had a great run with injuries, suspensions etc. Also our main attacking players like Murphy, Allan and Boyle have also been struggling with form or injuries.
Doidge will continue to score goals for us.

Seems mental eh? Made his debut at 16, so he's been about for a good while.
I'd have been in a similar camp prior to these last couple of seasons, but I think his loan spells helped him a lot. Looking good this year, think he'd be a good fit for us.
Killie have offered him a new contract so he may well end up staying put of course.

Lafferty is a horrible piece of work who hates Hibs...as a signing he would be an absolute disaster. If Doidge get's pelters for missing chances, can you imagine the reaction that Lafferty would get ? Cummings is yesterdays man unfortunately, let's not go backwards. I'd much rather see another strong, but mobile forward come in to fight for a place in the team with Doidge and Nisbet.
Agree entirely . Would hope we`re not even considering signing him

He appears to have 62 SPL goals. I think at one point he may have been in the all time top ten SPL scorers, but the SPL had been only going for about a decade at the time, and to this day there aren't that many players who have scored loads of goals in the league, presumably because most prolific ones tend to move to bigger leagues. Larsson the obvious exception who didn't move, and Boyd only went down south for a short time.
Remember seeing a list a few years back and it wasn't exactly a stellar line up.

I’m not disagreeing with you, just that it’s not a bad return halfway through the season whilst playing for Dundee United.
If we brought in a striker I’d like them to be at least as good as the 3 we have, if not better.

No sure about him not having a great run, he must have started all but half a dozen games maybe.
I don’t think it’s a case of him continuing to score goals for us, more that he needs to start scoring goals more regularly again.

I wouldn't be too bothered about Doidge leaving. I know he holds play up , he's a big target guy but if I'm honest I would rather have Kyle Lafferty. If it's one on one with the Doidge v keeper and a long run towards goal my money is on the keeper every time. Lafferty (or the one I last saw play across the city) IMHO is a better player. It's not going to be a popular post this but it's my opinion. I don't care what a player has done before or where he's played. It's my team I want better for. I think Doidge is a slightly better Nish. I would also take Cummings back no hesitation at all. He loves a big game and thrives on where he is idolised. He would get that here and we are creating chances - we just don't have anyone to score. Nisbet is a big strong guy who might thrive with a Cummings type player around him.
Just my two pence worth.
Lafferty is a horrible **** and I'd be very disappointed if he were to be signed. He ****ing hates Hibs as well so its a non starter.
Cummings is a totally different prospect and I'd take him in a heartbeat.

Doidge’s value to the team is more than goals. His presence on Monday created the space for the equaliser. He’s no pele but more than good enough for any premiership team in Scotland out with the OF. Hard working honest footballer who leaves everything on the pitch. We’d miss him big time
I can’t see us signing even another two after cadden comes in.
I’m sure Cadden is a RB
He's a right wing/wingback, this could see Boyle playing up top and McGinn in a back 3.
Gives us lots of options 343/3412/352/433/451.

His record is:
League: 17 goals in 42 starts (7 sub appearances)
Scottish Cup: 5 goals in 5 starts
League Cup: 4 goals in 9 starts (2 sub appearances)
So 26 goals in 56 starts, with 9 sub appearances. His numbers are healthy, even with a slightly disappointing goal return so far this season. And there is a lot more to his game than goals.
I love the big guy, but I do have to admit that the last few weeks have been disappointing - after he missed a lot of good chances vs Utd, his all round performances haven't been as good. I've seen enough in his time here to firmly believe that he will come good again, both in terms of goals, and the other aspects of his play.

Hibs and Lafferty is a marriage made in hell, even when he was good.
Now that’s he’s past it, it would be even more stupid.
I understand why the Norn Iron fans love him but we don’t and I’m sure the feeling is mutual.

I liked Nish.
Good player who had a good career and did fine for Hibs.
He's nothing like a yardstick of poor Hibs strikers, and if Doidge does better than him then he's done well.
Sure, he could be a bit frustrating, but on his day he could also be quality.

Agree with this. Had a woeful last season with us, when our team was very poor, and I think that severely affected how he is remembered. Getting subbed for David Stephens to get put up front must have been the low point of his footballing life.
Decent Hibs career up to that point, and a good one overall.

I never thought Nish was good enough and I think Doidge is better BUT I don't think he is anywhere near the level that some on here think he is. It's all about opinions so I'm not bothered but really one on one with a keeper from the day he pulled on a green top hasn't been awe inspiring. If we had had Holt doing the same job I think we might have had some more goals. The point on Lafferty was the Lafferty from the season at Hearts would have been a better player to have and I was disappointed we didn't get him for his footballing skills alone- I totally agree he's a bell end of a man. Cummings playing off either of Doidge or Nisbet I still think would be great. Strikers are hard to find. Doubt we will see a finer player than Griff up front again. Maybe he will give us a last season next year now that the ten is gone.

I was thinking ore of a foil for two strikers with Holt. I just don't rate Doidge at all. Yet to see him hit a clean goal - I didn't go every week before anyone says but when I did and if he scored it was always a squaff. I think he will be off close season. How much possession and how many corners and we don't seem to be able to score.
I still think Cummings would.

Plenty examples, however Dundee United last minute this season. As good and clean a strike you’ll see. But funnily enough, a ‘squaff’ or a screamer, they all count the same.

Who cares if it’s a clean goal or not. A goal is a goal. Simple! 1 yard 20 yards I don’t care as long as it goes over the line. It doesn’t even have to hit the net.
As others have mentioned superb strike v Dundee Utd away, couple of nice finishes against St Johnstone and some very good headed goals.
Doidge is having a tough time just now but when he’s on his game he’s one of the best in the Division at what he does. My opinion mind.

Agree. Scoring with your head also counts! It’s almost as if that’s taken for granted.
Having a go at Doidge for not always scoring one on ones is a bit like criticising Riordan’s lack of a threat in the air.

There’s really only the 2 of them though. Could do with another.
We’ve gone for 7 or 8 midfielders so a bit of cover up front would be useful too.
Most teams tend to have 2 main centre forwards. We also have Gullan.
If 1 gets injured it’ll arguably be a god send as it will force JR into playing a 433 with Boyle & Murphy wide.
We look poor in a 442 and struggle in midfield.

The winds of change will be blowing through Celtc sooner or later and the next manager will want a clear out. I’m sure he’d like to stay and fight for his place but they might want to cut their losses.

Hopefully he'll sign a pre-contract this time next year and we'll get him for the start of the 2022/23 season. He'll have just turned 32 and have lots of football left in him. Jamie Vardy, similar build, is 34 and still at the top of his game. I can wait.

I'm sure they would be delighted to have cut their losses a long long time ago.
However, Leigh will we hoovering another 18 months wages out of Celtic before he leaves just before his 32nd birthday whereupon he will try to rock up at Easter Road and try to hoover a final 3 years money out of Hibs.

Chris Cadden is set to sign for Hibs after completing a medical yesterday.
The former Motherwell ace – two Scotland caps – is quitting MLS outfit Columbus Crew after just 18-months and nine appearances.
Cadden can play at full-back or midfield and Hibees boss Jack Ross is a long term admirer.
The 24-year-old – who had a loan spell at Oxford United last term - played his final game for Crew on November 30 and returned to Scotland for Christmas.
It’s unclear if Hibees are paying a fee but Ross is delighted at the idea of adding Cadden to midfielder Jackson Irvine who signed on Tuesday and the duo could go into the squad for Saturday’s home game against Kilmarnock.

2 great signings. For me, I think we only need a CB. Paul McGinn has done a great job on the right, and Cadden can play there as well. I think Doig is the long term LB, so the more experience he can get, the better. Stevenson's performances have been up and down this season, but I think under his tutelage, Doig will continue to get better.

Extra quality to the team can only be a good thing. He seemed to be rated at Motherwell although I can’t recall much of him.
LW/ST would be my next priority.

Agree plenty of investment but it's in areas of the pitch we dont need cover in. We are woefully short at centre half, wide left and up front. Yet me have 3 left backs, 3 right midfielders.
Never seen such a imbalanced squad.

Up front I'll give you but wide left & CH??
Wide left: We've got Mackie, Doig, Wright , Murphy and Magennis who can all play there....
As for Centre Half we have mcGregor, Paul McGinn and Gogic who can turn..sure it would be nice to have some further quality - but it's hardly a burning hole in the squad.

Wonder if McGinn will move into the right of a back 3 permanantly now and we stick with 3-5-2. Dont know where that would leave Boyle,Doidge and Murphy if only one could partner Nisbet although it would give us more options on the bench which we badly need and the opportunity to change the shape if its not working.

CH might not be as important with the signing of Irvine and Cadden, Gogic can obviously fill in at CH. Probably the reason we have 3 LB's is because Doig has made more of an impact than expected, pretty sure we were expecting him to go on loan to further develop him as a player but he became a member of the first team squad. Also Ross hasn't had rhat many windows to shape his squad, trying to shape it when 2 of the 3 windows he's been in charge of the club have been during a pandemic.

Yeh a CH would be good but its only going to be cover. Up top we have Boyle that can play there, Murphy played off the 1 striker the other day, we also have Gullan. I'd like another but its going to be somebody who will have to be happy to sit on the bench all the time! The more i look at it the less chance of other players come in.....unless we move on a couple.

On the face of some of the points you make are valid, but maybe we are looking to the longer term and taking opportunities which we can at a decent cost whilst much of football cannot afford these options and having to accept an unbalanced squad as the short term price.
Ross wont have seen anything of Mackie and maybe Doig's emergence came a bit earlier that expected, the fact that all 3left backs have and still in some case have injury issues makes having all 3 fortiuitous
I would like another centre half but McGregor can do a job if required, as could Gogic or Paul McGinn
I don't think we are too bad left midfield for numbers but short of Murphy a bit light on quality
I would definitely like another forward

If you can keep him happy he is an asset. He got about 8 assists for Doidgy before he left and i think he would form a good partnership with Nisbet. For 5 months and no fans in the stadium that could workout well on the pitch and worth a punt imo

Maybe Ross fancies a slight variation on the 3-5-2 where the 3rd central midfielder is in the gap between strikers and midfield? Ideal role for Murphy or Allan, potentially a good role for Boyle making runs from deep behind the defence?

Kamberi’s issues are entirely with himself. We know how good a player he can be but he always seems to have a gripe or a moan and lets that affect his overall game.
He was treated abysmally by Lennon but that doesn’t mean that both parties can’t be in the wrong on this one. Heckingbottom - and Hibs overall - treated him very well.

That's probably how I'd like to see us play. We have a lot of midfield options, and different types of players so I think this is the best shape to get the best out of everyone. You could play Boyle/Cadden wide right, Doig/Stevenson wide left, and then any combination of Newell, Irvine, Allan, Magennis, Gogic, Hallberg, Mallan, Murphy in the midfield (assuming all of those players are still at the club come the end of the window).

His skillset is far more suited to left back, hence why he has only ever played there professionally. His breakthrough was at left back for a reason. Paul Hanlon was a centre back playing out of position and that was obvious right away. Doig has found his spot.

I didn't think it was obvious.
Hanlon looked like a decent left back and tbh when folk used to talk about him being a CB I could never see it. He might have played only a couple of games there before the "Galbraith winner" game at Celtic Park, where he was absolutely outstanding.
Similarly to that, I just don't see a CB in Doig. I've really taken to him in recent games as an attacking full back/ wing back though. I was a wee bit underwhelmed by him at the start of the season, in spite of him being part of a defence that wasn't losing goals. I guess I'm a bit of a Stevenson fan really.

No chance Kamberi is coming back. Ross lobbed him out the door very sharpish.
He runs a tight ship and doesn't appear to do the babysitting of high maintenance players.
Therefore, I suspect none of the following players mentioned in the preceeding pages will arrive during his tenure Lafferty, Ambrose, Kamberi, Griffiths etc
It's been a long time since a Hibs player was less than professional. Probably Lennon days when Ambrose and Stokes didn't arrive on time for training.

Never actually realised Cummings is out of contact this summer, we should be all over that imo however I’m not sure if he’s quick, big or powerful enough for Ross. He seems to like players that are powerhouses or quick imo and I’m not sure how Cummings would fit into that, he does have a bit of pace in fairness to him.
Also noticed McGeady and Chris Maguire are out of contract this summer, again 2 players Ross rated at Sunderland and were important for him. Could we see a move for them?
Murray Wallace was mentioned to me earlier at work, out of contract in the summer, centre half and currently plays for Millwall. No idea if he’s any good. I would like to see us go for Stuart Findlay or if we had the money to get him now, Jason Kerr.

He has 1.5 years left on his contract so you’re probably right, heard a few folk say Ross is a fan though and I’m not sure how well St Johnstone will be doing money wise right now so might be a cheaper than normal deal.

Was he treated abysmally though?
He made comments about him a few times in the press when he really wasn’t performing. Perhaps he was thrown under the bus a little bit he was playing poor, much of the team were.
We still don’t know what happened that day between them that caused Lennon to be suspended. Lots of rumours but nothing ever confirmed i don’t think.

Irvine has been available for a while and Cadden I assume since the start of the month. Why have we not signed these players earlier to allow them to get up to speed with a massive semi-final coming up? They’re both likely to be on the bench and potentially not have as big an impact as they might have if they were match fit

Sure I read hold up with Cadden is negotiating release from club in America
Maybe we were waiting to see Irvine in some training before offering a deal seeing as he's not played in a while? Maybe the hold up was on Irvine's side and not the club's?

Without doubt. Half of the times he was criticised it was for things that were barely or nothing to do with him, I vaguely remember him being blamed for a goal being conceded when he was the furthest man up the pitch, we lumped the ball up to him, it didn't work out and around a minute later we conceded through slack defending.

Wide left: We've got Mackie, Doig, Wright , Murphy and Magennis who can all play there....
Mackie should be moved on, Wright has been pretty abysmal and Magennis looks completely wasted on the left.
If Murphy is going to stay fit, we don’t need a left mid, if he’s going to miss 50% of the games then we prob do.

As mentioned before I think irvine will go straight into squad for sat as he has been playing in bounce games while training down south so will be fit, Cadden if completed today I'm still not sure if he needs to isolate unless he has been here over festive period.. and if so I think Hibs have been working on this deal prob for a while so you might find that hibs have given him a training schedule in advance to do while the deal gets sealed? Or maybe he has already been training with us during that time?

Why should we move Mackie on? He has looked decent when he has played so far this season, and is an oven ready replacement for Stevenson imo. Don't get this thing on here about moving him on. He clearly has something to offer the squad as a LB LWB or LM. Personally would hate to see him leave and think he will stay and develop here for us. He has worked hard and looks like he is apart of the squad. Good on him for it.

When Stevenson finally retires he'll end up coaching as he's doing that with the young lads at the moment, Mackie is a pretty decent left back and has done well when he played, he's getting a history of being injured a lot unfortunately, not big ones but niggly wee 2-3 week ones. Doig has done better than expected and the coaches probably thought another loan was needed but as far as I'm led to believe they see him as Hanlon's replacement, he still has a bit of filling out to play there regularly, possibly left of a back 3.

Was hoping we would have some players in by then and involved to get used to team mates etc.
Will see what happens with Irvine tomorrow.
Newell and Boyle being injured - you could say we are now weaker than before.
Murphy is back but Newell has arguably been our best player this season and Boyles speed always is an outlet.
Also curious to see if we will figure out LD replacement as it was announced 26th November she was going.

Yep and still young, he has all the attributes to be a superb CH but is still a bit skinny, because of his decent pace he can play wingback but as we've seen he gets caught out positionally at times but that's due to him being young. He might turn out to be a really good wingback and not go back to CH but if that's the case having 2 good young LB's at the club is a good thing.

Hanlon was a competent LB when he was younger and slotted in there many times, it's not a bad thing having a youngster learn this position if he's being groomed as a CH, he has the height and ball skills but just needs the muscle. You can see the difference with Porteous being that couple of years older and how much bigger and stronger he is now compare to when he was a 17 yr old.

Sorry pal but that is way out of date. Yes, until they have stopped growing it needs to be properly programmed but these days top athletes as young as 12/13 will be coached on technique (eg with broom handles) and once they have good technique, weights will be gradually introduced based on their physical maturity, not specifically to bulk up, but to strengthen key muscle groups, both for performance and injury prevention.

Am I missing something with this Wright deal? Why would Rangers reduce the Mcrorie fee as he would join for free in the summer, and its not like he is needed for the remainder of the season. Can understand trying to offload a squad player who is a taking wages out the club tho.
Probably because they are skint, and can’t afford a transfer fee for Wright in this window

Is that oven ready in terms of ready to step in with minimal effort required in preparing him or the Tory definition of oven ready ie not got a clue whether it is New York or New Year and probably think you get 3 goals for a shot over the bar.

Olly Lee who has been a regular fixture for Hearts this season has gone outnon loan, imagine he won't be back.
🆕 Olly Lee has completed a loan move to Gillingham.
🗣 “Olly’s contract is up at the end of the season and after some very amicable discussions between both parties it was decided that he would move on," said Robbie Neilson.

Stevenson signs contract extension to 2022.
Marvellous news. He is destined to retire having played for only one club.

Doig has a very slender build and probably just starting to bulk up with gym work - should not start till you are 18
He should have been in the gym long before 18. It’s a real failing in Scottish athletes that we don’t get kids strong while they are still in school.

No need to apologise as I was just curious. They offered him a contract on lower wages due to the cap on league 1 salaries when they got relegated but he turned them down. Seems they were very keen to keep him but hands were tied by the cap

The argument of young teenagers being in the gym reminds be a lot of why some females don’t want to do weights as they think they’ll be too muscly or bulky.
Strength and conditioning training is essential in players and especially younger players when they reach first team level so they can cope with the demands. This doesn’t mean making them build masses of muscle, but more so that the core and most used muscles are strong and able to help prevent injuries in addition to the benefits of explosive speed etc.
Females not wanting to use weights because they’ll get too muscly are being ambitious, I know many guys that have been going to the gym for years and have never developed that look despite them trying :greengrin
Its all about managing what you’re doing and making it proportionate to achieve optimum results.
For me I think Doig needs to bulk up a bit, but not too much as from what I can see his main attributes are his speed and running power, take that away and he’d struggle with the role he’s been doing. Add a big of muscle to his legs and lean muscle to his upper body and he will be an absolute machine flying down that wing given his height.
In fairness to Hibs, the size of youngsters coming through lately has had a noticeable difference Imo. Porteous, Gullan and Mackie are all solid and able to impose themselves in games. Mackie especially is an absolute tank, I know he was getting stick for being fat on social media but he doesn’t have an ounce of fat on him.

Sorry I wasn’t meaning from a football perspective, just fitness in general.
I was a personal trainer for a while and females always seemed reluctant to use weight as they had this idea that they would turn very muscly and bulky from doing strength and conditioning exercises.

Just had the misfortune to listen to Open Goal whilst making my lentil soup. What an awful show, cringeworthy patter, particularly from Slaney. Anyway, the were talking about Nisbet and mentioning strong interest from Sunderland as a fairly well known bit of transfer gossip. Has this been discussed on here? Wonder if there could be any foundation to it. Barry Ferguson was saying that 1.5 million would be enough and that either of the OF should also be interested.
