View Full Version : Greggs Winter transfer thread 2020-21
How come players like Jason Kerr, Ali McCann, and Gary Mackay Stevens all reputedly Hibs fans, have all managed to slip through our net. Leigh Griffiths arrived via an alternative route. I wonder how many other Hibs fans are signed for other clubs. If I remember right Gordon Strachan was also a Hibs fan but never turned out for the club. Its the kind of thing that get your goat.
Our 2016 legends contained several Celtc supporters, a couple of Dons fans & SDG was a Hearts fan. I think it's a bonus if a player is also a fan but it plays no part in recruitment.

Just listened to it, he's one of the most negative sounding managers around, monotone voice and little passion, I just can't get excited when I hear him.

Asked a friend today about JR, part of his answer below. My mate was previously a coach and is a Sunderland fanatic.
"If Charlton hadn't scored in the last minute in the play off final he would still be our manager. He didn't make the best of starts the following season, and was sacked. Comes across as a lovely bloke. He likes to get his defence and midfield sorted first. Unfortunately he set his team's out not to lose and then hit teams on the break. Not pretty but effective if carried out properly. He could probably be a bit more animated on the touchline. I would have given him more time at Sunderland"

I’ll be sure to let Klopp, Guardiola, Simeone and Mourinho know that when I next see them. Same with that Ferguson, he was renowned for being a lazy git and no doing his work during the week.

The last few games where we got well beaten proves these 2 points, either the players not doing as they've been coached or he hasn't done his job, if it's one or the other I want to see my manager trying to coach from the sidelines when things aren't going well.

Saw a lot of people saying we never needed Gary Mackay Steven when Hearts signed him.
To me he is exactly what we’re missing. Someone with a bit of skill and pace than can take the ball and create something.

Still think we are a CB short as well.
McGregor played well just hope he can stay fit. Hanlon was dropped /rested this evening and not sure if Porteous took a dull one.

Our defensive record is fine. We couldn’t sign Van Dijk and we’d still concede goals some times though. Sign another centre half though, fine, that’s still not fixing the deficiencies of this team.
As for forwards, we’ve got two proven goal scorers but we don’t create enough for them. Signing another forward like that won’t help.

I agree that Ross needs to make better use of what he has. It’s too easy to sign new players rather than actually coach and try to get more out of what you’ve got. And right now, there is no way he’s getting the best out of what he’s got. I don’t have a great deal of faith that more new players would make a great deal of difference.
We’ve only got 13 league games left, there has to be doubts about whether the Scottish Cup will go ahead so I wouldn’t be doing anything daft. A striker would be handy though.

Sunderland have 'made a move' for Ross County striker Ross Stewart.
The Scottish Sun report the Black Cats have stepped up their pursuit as the forward approaches the end of his Staggies contract.
John Hughes has indicated it would take around £500,000 for a deal to go through in the January window

We need everyone chipping in with goals. Especially from midfield and out wide. Really wish we'd shoot more than we do as well. Especially from the edge of the box.
Nisbet is on a poor run of form but it still joint scorer in the league. And Doidge has scored a few and assisted a few the past few months.
We also have Gullan, who I think looks a good player, he just needs given a chance to actually play as a striker.

In a team that can't score goals and with 2 main strikers who look bereft of confidence and a young untried laddie I will be very disappointed if we don't bring in at least one one other striker, if for no other reason to let those 2 know they aren't guaranteed a game.
We could also really really do with another centre half option, not one of our existing players who could be shoehorned in there.
Porteous & Hanlon both look like they co do with time out of the firing line, as someone who regularly defends Hanlon I thought he was all over the place when he came on last night
MrRobot

We definitely need another striker. As much as i like Nisbet, his form has been really poor recently and Ross doesn’t seem to be willing to put Gullan in. We need somebody that will go straight into the team or push for a starting place. I’ve previously said no to wanting Cummings back, but maybe it’s worth a shot.
Delighted to see Daz back in the team, played very well last night. Maybe solves our CB problem at the moment.

We dont really create many clear cut chances for Nisbet. Hes been working off scraps. 2 clear cut ones for Murphy on saturday and one for Irvine last night. If any of those 3 fell to Nisbet he scores at least 2 out of the 3.

possibly..although he's missed a few sitters too - but yes, overall, he is our best striker, and has scored more than he has missed. I wonder why aren't these type of chances falling to him? Is he making the same runs as he was earlier in the season? I think he has less enjoyed playing one up top, hopefully we will start to get the best out of him and Doidge in the games ahead.

We're lacking another player who can beat a man and make something happen. We need a tricky number 10 IMO. Zemamma like, that the opposing defenders and midfielders are afraid of when they get the ball, that can sit behind the striker(s) and pick up balls that put him into 1v1's that open up the play.
We seem to stagnate in games and run out of idea's. If you shut down the wings we are fairly easy to defend against, especially with the loss of Scott Allan's passing vision in recent months. So maybe that tricky little player in the middle of the park is the spark the team needs to really threaten. Its no coincidence our results have dipped along the same time as Martin Boyles performances. when hes not in the game we are not particularly creative anywhere else. hes been our out ball for a good few seasons now.

We need a striker who's adept at taking the ball in with back to goal and is technically proficient enough to distribute it from there. We have two goal poachers but teams who press us nullify them. So many times last night we won loose balls in good areas and it became nowt.

We need a striker who's adept at taking the ball in with back to goal and is technically proficient enough to distribute it from there. We have two goal poachers but teams who press us nullify them. So many times last night we won loose balls in good areas and it became nowt.
Agreed. A Brewster or Fletch type.
Us, Aberdeen or Sunderland I wonder?
Won't be us no way we can afford him unless some of the rumours re our players moving on are true.

Is here not a contradiction in there?
So they got 0.5% compensation then?
:greengrin I think MH is saying thats a Dev fee.....but yes in its purest form they are getting comp.
We dont really create many clear cut chances for Nisbet. Hes been working off scraps. 2 clear cut ones for Murphy on saturday and one for Irvine last night. If any of those 3 fell to Nisbet he scores at least 2 out of the 3.
Doidge also had 1 clear cut chance & one half chance. I like Christian, especially his 100% effort but Nisbet is by far a more natural scorer.

Nope, I don’t think so.
Lawwell thinks he knows all about football so probably doing it himself. Lennon hardly in a strong position to argue at the moment.
Of course Gerrard may well leave the Rangers in the summer, especially if they sell a load of players. But I still can’t see Celtc going into next season with Lennon at the wheel.

Hope so as Jason Cummings is obviously what we need to get the goals flowing again. The way he weaves through defences with ball seemingly glued to his right foot then picks his spot to slot past goalkeepers is exactly what we have missed since he went to Rangers an then moved up the ranks thereafter.

I despair at this board sometimes. There's many posts complaining that we, as a club, don't show enough ambition. Why do English teams always disrespect our teams apart from the rangers and celtic?
For someone who has shown he can do it in league one, the championship and now looking like the premiership. He also has 3 and a half years left on his contract. And if what some posters are saying is true 30 percent is due to dunfermline.
Is 2 million the starting bid and assuming other teams will start a bidding war? Although it's easy to say it won't happen because of covid and such, however the English leagues and loaded and if we accept 2 million for one of our best strikers in 5 plus years, I'll be very disappointed. The fans have backed hibs through donations and seasons tickets and it would be the fans getting sh** on.

Can’t see Hibs turning down £2 million for Nisbet in the current situation. I can’t see us selling both this window, on that basis I wouldn’t see the point in cashing in Porteous for £1 million as his value is unlikely to drop below that, more likely increase in the summer. Financially very difficult time for the club, if we can try and find a half decent replacement then fair enough.

Manager ? Recruitment ? Ron?
We haven’t got a chief exec - 2 months and counting..
It’s not like we are losing a SJM level player in either of them. Both are young and have potential but still lots to do. I think Nisbet with decent service will easily score goals at most levels. But he’s also not as good as say a young Leigh Griffiths.
Porto has improved but I still think he’s got a lot to learn and has made some key mistakes.
The main concern would be lack of time to find any replacements as we were short in both areas before the bids / anyone leaving ! It’s especially rare to do that in January as not as many players available.

If we could get another 500k to a million for both I’d sell and go test St Johnstone for Jason Kerr or QPR for David Bates.
Stewart from Ross County would be on my list as well. But I wouldn’t be against testing Dundee United for Shankland.

I can't reveal my source (not Hibs) but I believe it's at least 25%. Makes sense we would continue to follow the SJM model.
Seems like a hefty sell on fee when Dunfermline at that point were probably looking to cash in. Not saying your info is incorrect as i have no idea. I'd hope we aren't agreeing to 30% sell on fees fo everyone we pay a fee for?
2m won't make us a huge some of money.

Get a grip, he's a young lad in his 1st season in the premier league, yes 13 in 30 games is really good but he's been off the boil recently and is still yet untested, £2m + add ons is a very decent deal. I'd want at least the same for Porteous though.
It’s no a decent deal. How’s he untested? He’s sitting top scorer, or up there, in the league and we’re in January.
£2m is *****. Everyone’s got their opinion but I reckon our young lads are getting heavily undervalued by some on here especially when Celtic players, who’ve underperformed all season, are going for over 5 times that.

In one of the reports linking Doig with Arsenal it states that he’s 6ft 3, appreciate we’ve not seen them in the flesh for a while but is that right?
Also, surely any bid for Doig will see him at least finishing the season with us on loan?
A good bid for Doig from a top English club, say Arsenal, & back on loan until end of 21/22 season would be decent business.

Agree with this.
If we do lose any of Doig, Nisbet or Porteous we need to buy quality replacements. Luckily for us there are some really good players out of contract this summer we could get or manage to get players on a cut price as Scottish teams might be struggling for money.
Jason Kerr - St Johnstone surely don’t have much money
Stuart Findlay - Out of contract in summer
John Guthrie - Out of contract in summer
David Bates - On loan but doesn’t seem to be playing at Cercle Brugge. Out of contract next summer.

I despair at this board sometimes. There's many posts complaining that we, as a club, don't show enough ambition. Then we (supposedly) get a couple of paltry bids from 2 clubs currently down on their luck, and posters are saying we should accept them. We shouldn't even consider these bids & I very much doubt we will.

Grew a lot over the summer by all accounts and when you see him next to players he does seem to be bigger than the majority.

Shouldn't be accepting that bid for Nisbet.
If the stop scorer in Greece, Serbia, Denmark or Ukraine was attracting interest from England absolutely no chance does their club accept 2 million.
All those leagues are ranked below Scotland so why should we be accepting that and getting rolled over by English clubs?
Scottish teams have been underselling our players and getting low balled from down south for far too long.

Agree completely. We signed him on a 4 year deal, obviously with a view to selling down the line, not 6 months in when he’s still got Europe to play in, potential of finishing top scorer, potential for Scotland caps, all of which add to his value. Clubs should be desperate in January therefore should be overpaying, not massively underpaying (in my opinion).

I can’t believe the lack of value and respect they’re putting on our players.
Porteous has frustrated everyone and made some really poor mistakes over the past month especially. But he’s a really good young centre half with loads of potential. He’s played a huge amount of games for his age at centre half at a good level and in Europe. He’s had a call up to the Scotland national team and probably isn’t too far off a full cap.
People have said he’s not improved much since he first came through, I completely disagree. On the ball he’s miles better than before and I think he reads the game far better and defends 1 on 1s well. His issue is lack of concentration and at times being a bit rash, this will come with experience.
As for Nisbet, we signed him on a 4 year deal in the summer and within 6 months he’s joint top scorer and being touted for a Scotland cap. He has made the step up with ease and you know there’s much more to come from him. Why would we sell him at the first opportunity for 2 million? We could wait until the summer and sell him for double if he continues this form and gets a call up.
The board get stuck all the time but at the first sign of clubs interested in our players were happy t accept a combined total of 3 million for two of our best players and ones with the most potential? Madness, absolute madness.

The guy I know at East Mains says Hibs trying to tie up a few replacements before the following may leave.
Doig....very close to going to Arsenal. £2.5m with add ons
Gogic...couple of clubs in Cyprus want him. Omonia Nicosia one of them
Marciano....QPR and a club in Israel
Mallan....Peterborough (loan)
Porteous....Millwall £1.2m
Nisbet going nowhere.
He didn’t want to say who may come in but Doig, Gogic & Marciano are the players most likely to leave. He said the club not looking to replace Doig as they feel they have enough cover just now but trying to get another goalie, CH & CF.

2 years ago Brentford sold a 21 year old centre back for £12m. I would hazard a guess very few on here could name him. That's the market, English Championship, that we could be selling to & people think we should accept a bid of less than 10% of that for Porteous. Sounds good but if there’s a shortfall of £3m in our finances this year who is making up the shortfall?
Are we just expecting Ron to cover it?
I know that figure is pure speculation but using it for the sake of discussion, here’s what I’d do.
1) Take the 1.7 million loan from the government.
2) Try to sell fringe players or an older player to make up the £1.3 million shortfall
3) Ask the fans for help to make up any remaining shortfall
4) Ron Gordon to make up any remaining shortfall
I’d be going through all those options before underselling our prized assets. Our stock must be pretty high down south with how McGinn has done in the Premiership. It would be really harmful to the long term plan of the club to abandon our player strategy of developing our own young players or buying others to then develop further, before it’s even got started.
I’m not against selling anyone btw; I just think it makes most financial sense to demand market value for our players that have the biggest potential.

Doig to Arsenal would be strange. They just bought Tierney I thought they were well covered in that position. However listening to Ross after the game I thought Doig was one of the players he was hinting at receiving an offer for.
