After Canada standing up to Trump and cutting ties with America, Trump is now playing nice and calling the Mark Carney Prime Minisyer rather than governor as he was with Justin Trudeau.
The thought of Canada aligning more with Europe no doubt has led to it.
That’s how you stand up to a bully, well done Canada
Pray for Greenland, all those non specific problems the orange one and his Dr Evil sidekick are generalizing about that contented greenlanders never knew existed a few months ago.
Only the U S Nazi party can save them

Trumps comments about Russian and Chinese ships in the waters around Greenland are just plain stupid. Nae **** Sherlock. They’ve been in and around these waters for decades.
And please excuse my ignorance in most of this but I didn’t realise Greenland was rich in trillion upon trillions of dollars worth of minerals.
There’s the real reason Trump wants to control Greenland.

I think we’re more likely to see a civil war in the US than an attempt to take Greenland.

I watched a programme years ago on discovery about these Americans that went to Greenland to try and mine rare minerals. A gold rush type programme. That got hee haw because it was so difficult to extract

I think I watched some of that. Six or seven of them?
Thing is they would destroy the landscape/land and use huge industrial machines unlike those guys who used picks and hammers.

Yeah that’s the one! They would use industrial machines but the land was so remote and up and down mountains. I suspect it would be hard to get machinery in.
It’s like Ukraine, theoretical resources of trillions but how much is recoverable? In saying that I’d imagine Ukraine is far easier than Greenland.

You make jokes, but the parallels to a previous fascist keep coming thick and fast:
A little food for thought ...
In 1923, Adolf Hitler called for an uprising against the German government. He was put on trial, but received only a lenient sentence and became a convicted felon. Despite the judge's lenient treatment, Hitler claimed that the trial was a political persecution and successfully portrayed himself as a victim of the "corrupt" Social Democrats.
He skilfully staged himself as the voice of the "common man", railed against the "elites", cultural "decadence" and the establishment, all of whom he described as "Marxists". Hitler claimed that the education system was indoctrinating children to hate Germany and promised to lead the country back to greatness.
To consolidate his following, Hitler made minorities the scapegoats for the nation's problems and exploited social divisions with "us against them" rhetoric. Many Germans fell for it. The NSDAP continued to gain popularity until Hitler became Reich Chancellor in 1933.
Hitler appointed German oligarchs as his economic advisors and privatised state-run utilities to secure the support of the business elite. While the working class was divided along cultural and ethnic lines, the Nazis closed trade unions and banned strikes.
Progressive forces and union members were arrested and sent to concentration camps. Corporate profits skyrocketed while workers in Germany lived from pay cheque to pay cheque. Hitler himself became a billionaire during his time in office. He and his clique of oligarchs knew they could get away with their scam as long as they constantly presented an "enemy within" to blame while corporate rule plundered the country.
An easy target was one of the smallest minorities. Hitler stripped Jews of their birthright to German citizenship and began arresting them for mass deportations on the grounds that they were "illegally" in the country. The German press under Nazi control highlighted cases of violence by Jews to convince the public that Jewish immigrants were a danger to the "real Germans".
Hitler wasted no time in dismantling democratic institutions. Loyalty was not only encouraged, but demanded. Opponents were silenced, and media who dared to criticise him were vilified as "enemies" and "Marxists".
Hitler's propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels boasted that the Nazis had intimidated the media into giving them favourable coverage without having to give direct orders.
The Nazi regime and its supporters collected all books that they saw as promoting "decadence" or what would today be called "woke" and burned them in huge bonfires. They also burned books that promoted class consciousness.
Berlin had a thriving LGBTQ community in the 1920s, including the first transgender clinic. The Nazis burned it down. LGBTQ people were sent to concentration camps and had to wear pink triangle badges. Many were murdered in the Holocaust.
The Nazis also saw masculinity threatened by independent women who were not dependent on men. In 1934, Hitler proclaimed: "A woman's world is her husband, her family, her children, her home." Laws that had protected women's rights were repealed and new laws restricted women to the role of wives and mothers.
Reproductive rights were massively curtailed and doctors who performed abortions could face the death penalty.
Despite all this, the Germans had no comparable historical warning to look back on. Most people did not behave as if doom was imminent.
Most went on with their lives as usual - until many of them were wiped out. When Hitler's reign was finally ended by the Allies, 11 million people had been murdered in the Holocaust and 70 to 85 million people died in the Second World War.
It started with the NSDAP or MAGA, just as it does today.

And as someone who has read a helluva lot about the monstrosities that were the Nazi party, their pre and post 1936 rise and methodology, coupled with the warped and dangerous personalities who Hitler surrounded himself with (and why) the similarities are deeply concerning for anyone or anything these fanatical cowards happen to focus on next.

It’s real, videos on Reddit of people taking them down. It was a charging station in Tottenham.
Read an article earlier about Vance and his comments about security of the waters surrounding Greenland.
This paragraph in the article should put Trump and co’s minds at ease when it comes to the security issue they may have…..
On the security front, a 74-year-old treaty with Denmark permitting the US to increase its military presence in Greenland at any time – from new bases to submarine harbours - should surely take care of Washington's concerns about countering the threat from China, just as it did during the Cold War years.

During Trump's first stint in the White House, he declared he was going to do the 'biggest deal ever' by buying Greenland. He was raging when the Danish Prime Minister said that Greenland was not for sale.
What we are seeing now is Trump's ego in action. He didn't get his way first time round and he's determined to right that wrong.
This has nothing to do with US security, or even mineral rights, it's 100% the Big Baby determined to get what he was denied first time round.

Not much chance of that! Tesla is more than a car company which is why the valuation is so high.
I’m sure a few more months will cause them some pain but I can’t see any defaults or anything such like taking place. Maybe threaten factory closures to scare the governments about unemployment

Valuation doesn’t pay the bills month to month though? They have three giant factories geared up to millions of cars which won’t sell. At some point the money won’t be there to pay the workers, tax etc.

“Liberation day” in full swing. 25% tariff on all cars imported to the US and 10% on all UK goods
Discounted reciprocal rates however UK has a matched rate of 10%.
I think they’ll work out a trade deal pretty quickly. The US has a small trade surplus with us, we must be one of the only countries in that position

They’ll soon have a big trade surplus as we won’t match them. Starmer will just take the hit to Whisky and Salmon because it’s Scotland and he doesn’t give a monkeys.

The base rate is 10%, that’s why we have no discount.

Biden was slow and had moments where he lost his place but his policies were well thought out and considered. They were backed by a solid team with evidence based assessments. He put together a strong presidency where the US performed the best in the G20.
His mistake was not sticking by his promise to just do one term and allow a proper primary race.

White house just said any reports of pauses or 0% tariffs are "fake news". He's just said that if China don't back down on retaliatory tariffs by tomorrow then China will go from 34% to 50%
The last thing he wants are 0% tariffs and a bigger deficit, he wants no trade deficit. In his head selling goods for currency to a nation is him getting robbed, he's been going on about trade deficits since the 80s.
The only people the tariffs will hurt are the American public and nations that do retaliatory tariffs are just hurting their own public. That goes for every nation bar China, who are winning internationally from any trade wars. They should try and get lots of 0% deals in place in the meantime

I have a vested interest because I have a house in France and for the last few days I’ve been astonished at how far the pound has fallen against the euro.
Initially the pound jumped when the tariffs were announced especially as Europe is 20% and UK 10%.
Maybe this is the reason why.
Britain is in a very perilous state, although I think the rumours wil probably have came from Musk saying there should be synergy between Europe and USA.
Whether musk and trump are still besties is another subject

Well if the Whitehouse are saying it's "Fake News" then that's that theory scuppered.

Didn't the EU offer Trump 0% tariffs last time round and he turned them down? Who's speculating that he wants that now?
I'll be amazed if he has a coherent plan like that.

Well if the Whitehouse are saying it's "Fake News" then that's that theory scuppered.
There's also that there is zero chance Trump wants 0% tariffs on the EU when that would exasperate the fake problem he has in a trade deficit. He said yesterday “We put a big tariff on Europe. They are coming to the table; they want to talk, but there’s no talk unless they pay us a lot of money on a yearly basis—not just for the present, but also for the past"
He thinks the EU owes them for every year there was a deficit and wants to bring it as close to even or preferably surplus. It's so daft

The opinion and editorial pieces in the Washington post are almost universally negative to Trump and his administration.
Even the Bezos decision for the paper to not endorse a candidate in the election was panned by all the contributing opinion pieces as well as being criticised by the editorial board.
The tv news media in the US is awful across the political spectrum but I think they have some excellent newspapers.

That would require a functioning congress and Republican Party prepared to impeach him when presented with the evidence. The fact they whitewashed the Jan 6th stuff and didn’t impeach him on that let him know he could do whatever the **** he wants.
The New York Times had that 8 page pull out special during his first term which detailed in indisputable detail the various frauds (mortgage and tax) his business empire was built on. It made no difference.

Ok. I’m shaking. This is my first thread. My small business that I’ve had for 20 years is probably dead as of now. Trump and his idiotic tariffs killed my livelihood, my families business today.
Just now, I got a small shipment via UPS of products my customers are waiting for.
…A small box. A small box of stuff that can’t be made in the USA because we don’t have the materials here.
The tariff bill I have to pay the US government is $5,000.
$5000 needs to be paid up front. How can I stay in business unless I jack up prices now? As a small business I’ve always prided myself on giving …great customer service and lowest possible prices. This is NOT sustainable.
NOT ONE economist says tariffs will be good for the country. If me, an average American is already feeling this and will have to possibly shut my business of 20 years…then I know we are ALL in danger of a collapsing economy.
…All for a vanity act of a narcissistic president that knows nothing about business.
America will be his 7th bankruptcy.
No, I didn’t vote for him. I knew this would end badly in 2016 when he came down that golden elevator in Trump tower. A TV reality star that was playing a role. An act. An unserious man, a felon and a SAer.
…I know I’m writing into a void, none of my post are ever read…but thanks Threads, I needed to vent.
And…if you own a small business, don’t order products from oversees anymore until you jack up your prices to cover your losses. I’m sorry for my loyal customers, some have been with me for 20 years and I love them all. TARIFFS ARE A TAX ON US ALL!
Time to buckle up.

I know it would be nigh on impossible, but has there ever been a calculation of what a completely American made iPhone or something similar (or at least as much as humanly possible) would cost if it was completely built in the states? From the building of the factories, manufacturing, labour etc, it would be an interesting calculation.
If we use an iPhone as an example, they cost about $1300 right now I think. Would it be an exaggeration to suggest they’d have to increase in price to about $15000?

Cleverer people than me were talking yesterday about how the Americans will either have to work for the same wages as the Vietnamese, Chinese and Mexicans or pay sky high prices for similar products to maintain wage expectation in the States. And that's before you factor in available skills.
And all this whilst they are hounding out potential "foreign" labour and seeing favourable trade deals being struck between countries they have hit with tariffs.

Thanks all. That truly is an unbelievable thought, and that’s just one item. Throw in TVs, vehicles, furniture, car parts and a million and one other things and the numbers become absolutely insane.
I saw an explanation regarding a tangerine and even the description around the price of that was mental. Things like the nets you buy them in, the labels, the transportation of them, the tractors that they are moved around in, the warehouses they’re stored in, the shops that are built to sell them and lots of other bits and pieces that would all sky rocket in price.

Yeah, you're right.
The "cost with tariffs" isn't nearly as scary as the other one.
Quite apart from the upfront costs in setting up a production facility in the US, the profit margins at that price will be so slim as to make it uneconomic. Would-be manufacturers would also be wary of the fact that there might be a change in Government, and policy, in a few years' time.
IMO, people and businesses who can afford it will suck up the price-increases for now; others will hold off upgrading.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons why tariffs might not work as well as Trump seems to think, unless Apple shift the manufacturing for the entire worlds supply of iphones to the US, the cost of manufacturing a 100% US made iphone is likely to be much higher than just getting one from China and paying the additional tariff on it.
For reference, there's an interesting video on youtube detailing the costs involved in making somebody's dream phone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bny2NJkJGXc
which gives a rough idea of the cost of making a phone from scratch. The cost of an iphone would clearly be much less as this is a one off, but it does give you an idea of the costs involved in setting up new tooling lines and assembly lines.

Talking a lot and doing nothing to upset Agent Orange and probably thinking we got luckier than most, by sheer fluke, is pathetic on our part.
We don't have much of a hand to play being a very small trading bloc and largely irrelevant in other areas but fawning over this toxic version of the U S leaves a bad taste. I've got my doubts about Starmer's ability in a crisis.

There's no way back for this US regime, they have to hold on to power by any means possible or they are doomed.
