Let’s be thankful we all had mums who took responsibility for their children eh? We can all agree on that one. Night all [emoji106]
Hope your away to watch Vera drake.
Abortions will never stop that is just stupid, safe abortions will
If banning abortions stops abortions they should ban all guns in America. Oh but wait they said banning guns is pointless because people will still use them

For your information no mother has ever killed their unborn child. It's a legal impossibility.

One of the darkest days for women’s rights in my lifetime. Obviously the immediate consequences will be suffered by women in the US - but this will embolden anti-abortion & anti-women forces in other countries too. Solidarity doesn’t feel enough right now - but it is necessary

A sad day.
Abortion exists and has done for centuries. This doesn't rid certain states of abortion, it only removes access to safe abortion.
I always argue you don't have to like the action of abortion or the outcome, you can argue about what is a reasonable 'cut off' for when it should be permitted and you can argue that all other avenues of support should be offered first; however it is still something that is a necessity in some cases and a choice in others and as such should be available in a safe and supportive environment.

Pro lifers are pro gun in the main, so they fully believe in the rights of children to live unless they’re shot, in which case the gun wins.

This agenda is about controlling women. What's the next target of the fundamentalists? Contraception, gay marriage, even interracial marriage could be vulnerable to being sent back to the individual states:

Just to be clear on this, by going after Lawrence vs Texas 2003 Clarence Thomas is calling for a judgement on whether or not gay sex should be illegal. Organs Hungary or new Poland hasn’t even gone that far. That’s the company the GOP is keeping. It’s all nice and everything to have friendly debates online about abortion rights, gay rights, black right to vote, but FFS if you support all of that I reserve the right to call you a ****ing racist, a homophobe and a misogynist. And I don’t think you’ve got a leg to stand on. (Not directed at the quoted poster)…

Yes, you're right. Thomas is going beyond same sex marriage and is going after 'sodomy'. Would that mean lesbian relationships would be allowed, but male relationships illegal?

But for some reason are almost never referenced as terrorists in reporting. That's a huge part of the problem. Painting these people as a 'lone wolf' or a 'crazed gunman' downplays the fact that this is a loosely organised group of extreme right wing nutjobs, primarily male. Emoboldened by the success of the likes of Trump and Bolsonaro they are increasingly dangerous.

What about sodomy in opposite-sex couples?
Given that the dictionary definition of sodomy includes oral sex, many gay women would also be criminalised.
My question would be, as it always has been in some US States, how would that be policed?

Indeed. It's a matter of taking the fundamentalist Christian view that sex is sinful, to the extreme. 18th century American Puritanism to be revived in 2022, in some attempt to put the toothpaste back in the tube. It's insane and impossible to police. Justice Thomas is proposing that all equality rights won via the Fourteenth Amendment be challenged, but with one exception: interracial marriage. He didn't mention that one, though, of course, the fact he is a black man married to a white woman would be coincidental. Stripping others of their legal rights is fine, but he draws the line when it would affect him. However, interracial marriage will be challenged in the same way - advocates will claim it's a states rights issue and isn't constitutionally guaranteed. If that issue reaches the SC, what will Thomas do? He is a very dodgy and unpleasant guy. His wife is currently deeply implicated in the attempt to overturn Biden's win.

I wonder what the progressives and liberals who refused to vote for Clinton are feeling right now?
The issue with US presidential elections is you aren't just voting for a 4 or 8 year period, you are voting for them potentially having the ability to shape the future of the country for decades, particularly in the case of Trump who was able to rebalance the ideology of the Supreme Court.
This ruling would never have happened had Clinton been the 45th US President. For all her many faults she would have secured a liberal, relatively speaking, majority among Supreme Court justices for a generation.

I'm with the lady at the end. The education system is one of the big reasons for Americans holding these views in such numbers. Combine that with a rigged media and massive firepower and you have a huge problem.
My kids don't believe in God, are good Hibees and hate the Tories. They are also very wary of the Police, as I am, and know to question everything you see on TV. Now does that mean I have brainwashed them or have I influenced them and they haven't found strong enough reasons to form an alternative view, that may come when their mates influence them more than me.
When you think about it young minds are there to be moulded and filled with information and at least in the UK our state schools give kids a fairly clean view of the world and some ability to critically think. If, as was said in the clip, the church plays a big part in schooling and curriculums could be shaped by individuals in the community or those funding schools then it is quite easy to see how quickly you could flood the electorate with little clones with ludicrous far right views. It is basically the Trump Youth.
One thing is for sure we can forget about solving Global Warming and living in peace and harmony in the future. The world is just waiting to die and when you see the quality of our leaders in the UK and US then perhaps it isn't before time.

While that is part of the problem, the other major factor goes back to Ronnie Reagan, he deregulated the News Media industry while being funded by a number of media moguls (while US news outlets were not censored they were under an ethical guide (the Fairness doctrine) mandated by government). Essentially that meant that Fox News could exist, whereas before then a 'news' channel spouting what Fox puts out would find themselves in court every single day because US laws did not allow false reporting. Reagan changed that and essentially said that News programs are entertainment shows and could say anything they liked under the first amendment, he removed the ability of government to hold media moguls feet to the flames whenever they spouted lies. The deregulation that Ronnie did in the 80s were the catalysts to modern America. (please excuse my simplified and ramble on this).
You are sadly correct about the direction of the world right now, we are heading towards a dystopian future, oft imagined by authors. The EU have basically said oil is green energy, the US will never cut their energy consumption (remember if you split the US military from the US then they would still be the 1st (the country) and the 4th (the military) largest polluters on the planet). We are in the beginning of the end years of capitalism and unfortunately none of us make it out alive from that scenario.

I had a bit of a mental meltdown at the start of the war, and there were several events that happened around that time that led to it.
Looking back, one of the scarier parts of it was the discovery of this piece of work, sometimes called “Putin’s playbook”.
At a time of fear and uncertainty, reading about what was contained in it scared the living **** out of me.
As time has gone by, I’d take more convincing than ever that it isn’t the exact playbook and it is chilling in the extreme to look back and see how much of it has already been worked very hard on.

The MAGA types, such as Fox News, are going ballistic about it, but the raid was carried out on a warrant signed by a Trump appointed judge, at the request of a Trump appointed FBI Director. Sounds like probable cause must have been established. There is no way the FBI would undertake such an operation unless they were one hundred per cent legally covered.

Don't think that's ever been true in the UK. Currently there are no crimes that carry the death penalty (treason carries a prison sentence: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_treason_in_the_United_Kingdom#Today), and the last folk hanged before it was abolished were convicted of murder.
EDIT – further reading tells me it was the case up until 1998:
Beheading was abolished as a method of execution for treason in 1973. Hanging, however, remained available until 30 September 1998 when, under a House of Lords amendment to the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, proposed by Lord Archer of Sandwell, the death penalty was abolished for treason and piracy with violence, replacing it with a discretionary maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
No idea about the US.

I was glancing through twitter last night and came across a thread which I initially thought was just more made up BS. So I had a wee look and see if the thing it was claiming was true. And I am just not sure having seen the photos now!
Anyway, the tweet tagged in the FBI and when something like. "Dear @FBI, If I were you I would be getting a warrant to exhume Ivana Trumps coffin! I am pretty sure it would not normally take 10 pall bearers to lift a surprisingly huge coffin (for who was a relatively small 73 y.o. woman). Just saying."
Now go and google "Pictures of Ivana Trumps funeral" and tell me that isn't a huge box of stolen documents being planted on his New Jersey golf course! For any normal human I would ignore it but this is Trump :greengrin
Apologies for the macabre nature of this post.

That's the last line of defence now. The Trumpanzees began by saying the FBI planted documents. Then they switched to saying the documents were never classified. Now they are saying the documents were actually top secret, but a president can de-classify anything at any time. Actually that isn't true, there is a protocol to follow when de-classifying documents. Furthermore, some documents e.g. nuclear secrets, are so sensitive, a president can't unilaterally de-classify them. Anything de-classified means that it's available for anyone to see. Trump is therefore arguing that top secret documents were declassified on the spot, thus in theory any American could have had instant access to them. That's nonsense of course; there is a process. A desperate defence.
4:59 p.m. Documents marked top secret are instantaneously de-classified so Trump can take them home.
5.00 p.m. If Chuck the welder from Pittburgh asks to see those documents, that perfectly okay now. Aye right.

“When we got ‘The Diary of Anne Frank,’ we thought, ‘This is a joke.’ But it wasn’t,” Hawes said, adding that the complaint was that “the book shouldn’t be read without parent supervision.” She suspected that the parent may have objected to the unabridged diary’s references to female genitalia, same-sex attraction and other sexual matters, which have been deemed “pornographic” by parental challenges in the past. But she couldn’t be sure because the parent who challenged the book didn’t show up to the meeting.

Long overdue. No doubt he'll claim it's a witch hunt. He'll then throw everyone and anyone, including his kids, under the bus.
Once/if he loses such a case then I can see him getting done for many others. The list of investigations is incredible.
I'd point out that it's a civil case and he's being sued for $250m rather than being charged for a crime. That said, a referral is going to federal prosecutors so it could lead to him ending up in a criminal court too.
Top Trump Organization finance guys, CFO Allen Weisselberg and Controller Jeffrey McConney not included in the lawsuit so seems like they may have struck a deal in exchange for testifying against Trump and his kids.

Referred to the IRS for criminal prosecution, it's beautiful. Financial journalists have said for years he was committing fraud in relation to asset valuations, in addition to tax evasion. Then there are his separate cases - there has to be a good chance he will be prosecuted in relation to the stolen secret documents.

In terms of the bankers, it has been widely reported that Deutsche Bank were complicit over the years.
However in other examples it seems that normal due process has just been waived due to Trumps profile and the perception of reputational risk to not deal with him. If you look at Turnberry for example, that purchase should never have been allowed. By all accounts Trump bought it without debt funding and with no clear source of wealth evidenced. It's not his only asset where he just produced cash out of nowhere. Hence it's subsequently been the subject of proposed "Unexplained Wealth Orders" - albeit I don't think that has gotten very far.

Hasn’t failure with auditors been a feature of all the recent corruption scandals over the last 20 years? And failure to value assets properly was how we ended up with the sub-prime crisis?

:agree:
Ernst and Young were Wirecard A.G's auditors for years but failed to notice that the vast majority of it's 'Assets' were in fact a total fraud, with vastly inflated values that helped increase the value of the company shares,.
The collapse of Wirecard was Germany's biggest financial scandal for decades, and came about through an almost total lack of diligence on the part of their Auditors

Trumps request and installation of a special master in the case of the documents found at Maralago has royally backfired on him and his lawyers. This was triggered by the dodgy judge who gave Trump the opportunity to install a special master (a judge specifically to look at the documents found and judge what needs done with them), he submitted two candidate and the DOJ agreed with one and they were installed (Judge Dearie). This was a tactic to slow the legal process down and to shove as many spanners in the works as possible. Anyway, it turns out the Judge Dearie is a competent and able judge with knowledge of Trumps dealing with court and the legal system. He issued a case management order to tell Trump has to submit an affidavit under penalty of perjury to the court regarding his claims about the remaining documents at issue by the end of this month. Judge Dearie set an expedited timetable for completing the review of records and ordered Trum to pay a retired Judge $500 p/hour to help review records, and knowing Trumps penchant for not paying his legal advisors, has set a limit of 7 days for paying this judges fees, if he doesn't pay he will be found in contempt of court. So in short, Trumps plan to slow the process down has speeded it up and put him under real pressure.

The problem with democracy is it is anti-capitalist, it gives a normal citizen the chance to change stuff that would work against the pursuit of profit!!

Ok, but to me this is not quite the point I was making. For the Brexit referendum, I accept that more people voted Leave than Remain. What I do not accept is that it was a fair referendum because one side told outright lies without any sanction, and that same side used illegal activities (including illegal funding from Russia) to unfairly sway public opinion.
So no, I don't accept the Brexit referendum result as valid and I never will.

I'm too tired after tonight but after all the discussions on here about tories/corbyn/snp/labour/brexit etc etc we surely recognise by now that "clips" can be used to skew perspectives very easily?
I'm sure I've said previously that I worked on the technical side of tv reporting and was often amazed at how easily it was for producers and reporters to portray a completely different meaning to what was intended by the person being quoted by selective quotes..... if I hadn't been there in the flesh I'd have had a completely different viewpoint on what was said.

There was a huge difference though.
Clinton didn't try to get Governors to overturn legitimate results.
She didn't take spurious law suits to 66 supposedly sympathetic judges hoping that they'd support him.
She didn't encourage attacks on Congress.
There's little doubt that Russian interference helped Trump win so her complaints had merit.
There is literally no evidence to back up Trump's claims.

I was hoping Harris would have been a bit more towards the front and centre as VP. She seems to be taking a bit of a back seat. I know a VP needs to be careful not to upstage the President but she seems a bit more 'invisible' than other recent VPs.

Would be a poignant reminder the systemic problems haven't gone away.
Democrats had control of all three seats of government and did nothing. Roe v Wade was overturned and they did nothing. They are complicit in allowing someone like Trump to take power and maybe this will wake people up to the fact that if your party's just a front for the rich to siphon away left votes then people won't vote for you unconditionally. Even when the alternative is Trump.

I have always thought Trump was just a common thief and grifter, he has that air about him, I wouldn't leave him in a room with anything expensive as you'd likely be searching for it after he had left. It seems that there is a bit of old fashioned larceny entailed in his tenure as the 45th president of the USA!! Investigators are now looking for items that are missing from his time in the White House. There is a US federal law that states any gift the president receives and is worth more than $415 then it has to be handed over to the National Archive to store, if the president wants to keep the item then he has to pay the cost of it otherwise it goes to the NA. It seems a number of gifts the Trumpster received while president have gone missing, these include a pair of diamond earrings, a ceremonial gold medal from a Saudi prince and an expensive set of golf clubs.
I know this is unimportant news just now with the midterms happening and by the look of it the GOP winning back the house but it really reflects what sort of character the 45th president was/is.

Ron DeSantis, was put on the defensive by his Democratic challenger, Charlie Crist, on subjects including abortion and DeSantis’s presidential ambitions.
Crist called Florida’s 15-week abortion ban, which does not include exceptions for rape or incest, “callous and barbaric”
DeSantis said he was proud of the ban but would not say if he supported further restrictions. He also made a string of false claims.

Its nothing to do with what we'd define as extreme in Scotland. You said 'He's equally as anti-abortion as Trumps gang'. i was just pointing out that's not the case. They will pick and choose the individual causes they trumpet based on the dynamics of their home state.

Weird thing to pick out. He only chose 15 weeks because he knew he'd win that, in 2018 he supported dropping it to be banned after 6 weeks even in cases of rape. That's obviously a near full ban as most don't know before this. He's not stating what he thinks personally because he's tied into his presidential bid

Is he not probably Trump's biggest rival?
I have a "mate" who is into his politics and incredibly right wing (we lock horns quite a lot).
He's a huge fan of De Santis - all the right wingness of Trump but without the toxicity.
I'm somewhat relieved that Trump appears to be fairly toxic, although not naive enough to expect that any republican alternative is likely to be much better in practice.

Biggest rival for victory, but similar parts of the party unfortunately. As someone said perhaps more dangerous than trump as he's not seen as a joke but his politics are vile. Many love him because he famously tried to reject all lockdown measures in Florida during covid, the massive deaths prove how that went

It’s well known De Santis had taken a less extreme position on abortion than others on that wing of the party. You obviously didn’t know that, that’s fine, but don’t deflect for the sake of it. You have a real problem with doubling down after your mistakes. Just own it and move on.

What... He campaigned for it banned after 6 weeks including rape, that's the extreme side of even the republican party. I'm well aware that he's anti abortion thats why i said it because he is. The article says he isn't committing on his position, so probably only well known in your head. Yes there is more extreme but the majority are less so

“Trump is livid” and “screaming at everyone,” after last night’s disappointing midterm results for GOP, according to a Trump adviser. The adviser went on to slam the former president’s handpicked contenders: “they were all bad candidates.” “Candidates matter,” the adviser said
This adviser said it’s unlikely Trump would delay his expected presidential announcement because “it’s too humiliating to delay.” But the adviser said there are too many unknowns at this point

But you know that Kentucky and Louisiana lawmakers for example, have banned abortion in ALL circumstances? And there are a range of different limits across all states? So there are differences within the Republican establishment? And deSantis has now a position of 15 weeks and a continuation of state facilities? Do you accept that? I said he's trumpian in lots of issues including guns abortion, immigration ect, I stand by that. There will be some that are further right on the trump group on all they issues, but desantis is still insane.
He's dropped it to 15 weeks. He campaigned for 6 and that's what people expect him to do next. There will be some pro trump governors that will be less right than he is on other issues. The point is he's pro trump and to the right of the party.

Looking like the Dems will hold the senate. Arizona pretty much in the bag and almost caught up in Nevada with 100K or so postal votes to count which should favour them. They'd also be favourites to win the Georgia runoff, especially if Trump makes a lot of noise between now and Dec 6. He's widely tipped to announce his candidacy for 2024 in the next couple of weeks.
The House of Representatives is still in play also, although the Dems need the majority of the remaining close calls to go their way. Republicans still favourites.
You are right that both chambers need to pass legislation but voting against party and compromises "across the aisle" are more common than they are in Westminster politics. But it's true it gives Biden a big headache in terms of getting anything remotely controversial done.

Here's the two things I think could happen:
1) him and DeSantis fight it out, DeSantis wins the nomination, Trump throws toys out of pram and his supporters don't vote for RD. Dems win.
2) him and DeSantis fight it out, DeSantis wins the nomination, Trump throws toys out of pram and runs as an independent splitting the R vote. Dems win "Biggly".
