It's born of desperation. In the past forty years, since Reagan was elected, millions of Americans have been dispossessed and are angry. They are drowning in debt, yet they voted for their own demise. Sadly, their culture is dominated by the lowest common denominator: don't analyse the systemic failings, just lash out at the weakest, so deflecting from real analysis. It's rather like The Sun and Daily Mail here telling us that social problems are totally disconnected from the policy causes. Lash out and condemn, don't analyse. There are plenty of idiots who accept the narrative: treat the symptom, not the cause; thus they continue to dig their own grave.
Delete Reagan and paste Thatcher and you have the UK.

Delete Reagan and paste Thatcher and you have the UK.
I'm not so sure. America doesn't have the class distinctions and tradition of democratic socialism that we have. Of course Thatcher also played the divide and rule game to the hilt, but she did face massive (though ultimately unsuccessful) resistance in many parts of the UK. Central Scotland, Northern England and South Wales fought Thatcherism tooth and nail. As a wee boy I remember the collections for the miners in 1984-85 and the feeling of solidarity against an alien government. You were either for her or against her; there was no compromise. America doesn't seem to have that tradition; not since the organised left was destroyed in the 1920s. Reagan didn't face the same opposition as Thatcher. I still hate her and her philosophy, as i remember the hardship well, though it did bring out the best in people in this part of the world.
Id do the same as her and try and put a stop to itTry to put a stop to the left not being in meltdown?
She doesn't care if there are asylum seekers in the country or not. It has no bearing on her whatsoever. If she does invoke some kind of policy or new practice it'll be a rotten attempt at looking tough against foreign people with complicated forms and some coke addict numbos getting to wear a uniform for a private security firm.
A huge xenophobic distraction for bigots to salivate over.
Its weird, at this moment in history in quite a few countries, that the ultra rich can persuade the poor that those with nothing are the cause of their problems. Absolute mugs.

Why do you want to put a stop to it?
(I take it that the "it" we're talking about is the refugees attempting to get into the UK by risking their lives on small dinghies in the English Channel).
Why don't you want refugees to be allowed to enter the UK?
They aren't refugees they're coming from France, it's perfectly safe there. There's no reason the UK couldn't offer asylum to some of them but in an orderly fashion.

Why should France have to look after them and we don’t?
And don’t just say the English Channel.
The U.K. quite frankly dodges it’s obligations to house refugees. Countries like the Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey (who are least placed to deal with them, bear the brunt).

Yet the French stopped 10 times as many attempted boat crossings last month compared to 2019.
The UK and France also agreed last month to a joint intelligence unit on people smuggling networks and are in active talks on a revised plan to try and stop the boat crossing routes being used.
Also France is still obliged to be following the EU agreed rules with the UK through 2020.
Still Brexit n all that.
The fact is that these migrants, some of who will be genuine asylum seekers, others simply economic migrants, are being exploited by criminal gangs profiting from people trafficking with zero regard to any laws or the safety of the people they are smuggling.
No matter what you think of the UK’s asylum process that type of profiteering and disregard for life should never be supported.

Depends on how you measure low.
The actual figures on numbers being granted asylum have grown substantially over the last decade and last year saw the highest number yet.
Here’s some figures to digest and help inform:

That is informative, particularly this part:
"The UK received a number of applications equivalent to the 5th largest of the EU member states in year ending September 2019; this would equate to the 19th largest per head of the population."
Which seems to support the assertion that UK levels are low.

The reason there's currently so many boat crossings is a side effect of covid - less lorries crossing at the moment and the ones that are are complying with safety restrictions.

Rubber boats and lorry cabins are no way for anyone to travel. There needs to be a legitimate route like a ferry that will bring over the people that are granted asylum and the people that are rejected will just have to make do with France. Its not so bad over there.

https://observatoryihr.org/blog/the-uk-must-stop-compelling-asylum-seekers-to-risk-their-lives/
The problem is that asylum applications must be made on British soil. Incongruously, in order to be permitted to even request to live in a place of safety, stability, and opportunity, you have to already be there. Asylum seekers can enter the UK in one of two ways. The first option is to fly in and claim asylum upon arrival. Yet for every country that an asylum seeker is likely to have travelled from, a visa is required to enter the UK. And the government advises against granting an applicant a visa if:
the political, economic and security situation in the applicant’s country of residence, including whether it is politically unstable, a conflict zone or at risk of becoming one, leads to doubts about their intention to leave the UK at the end of their visit
In other words, if it’s suspected that a person might be seeking entry to apply for asylum, their visa application will almost certainly be rejected. To be allowed in, the UK has to be confident you will leave. The upshot is that the only safe, legitimate way to enter the UK in order to seek asylum is blocked.
That leaves just one option: would-be asylum seekers must enlist smugglers, at considerable cost and risk, to help them to move across borders without detection. Their attempts to reach the UK necessarily require them to break laws, and hand over their life savings to criminal networks who can offer no certainty about whether they’ll arrive alive. The odds are never good.

It's fair to have different views on the topic, but what a horrible response this is. Devoid of any compassion or empathy for those who are fleeing their country for a safer or better life. Do you think they want to be in this position? Do you not think they they wish for a safe or secure future in their homeland?

You obviously don't understand the conditions that refugees have to endure in the camps such as the Jungle near Calais. Full and overflowing with no proper sanitation or water supply. A leaking dinghy is deemed to be preferable to that.

It’s not just here that people try to escape to. The numbers trying to get from France to Britain is a small percentage of the numbers who arrive in France.

My wife's friend lives in a small village in Sachsen and they were so terrified when a handful of refugees was housed there temporarily that they stopped taking their kids to the park and some of the women started going to the shops in pairs, instead of on their own.
Apparently it's a 'well known fact' that the refugees would rape them and steal their children.

I see Steve Bannon has now been arrested for fraud. The minute Trump loses his pardon power they are all going to turn on him badly. If he doesn’t win in November I can’t see him staying out of jail.

Money on that. Except, except, except....it's probably cleaner for the US to pardon him on the basis that he goes quietly away - Nixon style. The problem though is that Trump is undoutedly incapable of that - he is literally his own worst enemy.

Not the first time in recent days Bannon has been linked with criminal activity;
https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1237155
Sadly swept under the carpet by Trumps lackeys. One legal analyst (and 30 year career prosecutor in the US) predicts this could be revisited if Trump leaves the WH in January. That will depend on how much pardon power Trump has before he leaves, if he knows those close to him are in legal jeopardy once/if he’s out of office can he pardon them in advance?

Lots of talk about the undefined them and they being the nefarious oppressors. They are trying to do this...if we let them do that then this bad thing happens etc.
Then the classic denial of being a conspiracist because it’s what she believes and it’s her views. Although President Obama set a record for the most commutations in history, his total of 212 pardons was well below that of many of his predecessors. Bill Clinton issued 396 pardons, Ronald Reagan 393, and the all-time record goes to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who issued 2,819 pardons during his 12 years (not 16) in office. George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush were the only presidents of the modern era who issued fewer pardons than Barack Obama.

Well I did but that’s because I had been told what was said before hand...the audio is a bit fuzzy so being told it was monkey I’m pretty sure that’s what I heard.
Reading on and seeing it was spygate I listened again and to be fair it kind of sounds a bit like that as well.
I then tried to blank my mind and listen to it ‘without prejudice’....when I did that I’m pretty sure that I’d have struggled to clearly determine what was said if I hadn’t been fed the two options previously.
So in summary I’ve no idea what the dude said or why Trump found it funny.

Trump is trying to move the conversation from the economy and covid where he knows he'll lose, to law and order, culture wars etc that have served him well in the past.
I think this is election hangs on who is able to control the narrative and what issues are focused on.
Trump shouldn't stand a chance but I'm increasingly worried in the last couple of weeks.

Unprecedented times, innit.
Things going for Trump
- the electoral college is now quite slanted toward the Republicans. Biden needs a 2-3 % lead just to be level.
- up until Covid the economy was going fairly well
- Biden is pretty hopeless
- the culture war
Things going against Trump
- Covid
- he's an arse of unprecedented magnitude
- the culture war
I think the culture war aspect will lead to the race tightening as the "tribes" clump together but, in the end, I think Biden will win because he doesn't engender anything like the knee jerk negative response that Hillary or Trump himself do.
There is also potential for a black swan. I would be frankly astonished if Trump doesn't license a Covid vaccine the week before the election whether it works or not.

Some people seem to think racist and fascist are just terms of abuse, that you get to stamp your feet about if you’re called out for it because it’s rude and ‘crosses a line’. It certainly looks like we're sleepwalking into it. In Trump's case I don't think he set out to do it but there's people advising him that have gently nudged him in that direction and now he's too far to back out. He's now so terrified of what might happen to him after he has to give up the presidency, that he'll try and hang onto it as long as he can whatever the price.

To be fair, Biden *is* skooshing it in the polls by any normal measure. His current 7% average lead is roughly the margin Obama beat McCain by.
But that's fallen from 10% most of the year and people are getting jittery because of how much is at stake.

I predict more riots as Trump seems to feel that this is helping his cause And gives him ammunition to criticise Black Lives Matter and Tao into the psyche of those that see this not about injustice and Civil Rights , but about defending The Real America
Also a lot of the Conspiracy theorist groups love him and see him as cleaning up the Swamp and speaking out against a Global Agenda

:agree: Its what happens when you have a strategy of demonisation, along with removing the traditional burden of proof. Trump knows he can repeat claims of far left puppets, anarchists and the Democratic Party being in league, men in black in planes in the shadows, but in the age of social media the burden of proof has now magically switched to being on the accused, not the accuser :dunno: You’ve seen this time and again in politics in recent years. Fascism can only really flourish in a society that is already on a downward trend. If you can convince the majority that a minority are to blame for all their woes, then you're half way there. Problem is that once in power they need to be seen to be doing something to correct the imaginary wrongs, that's when things get messy.

If he was asked by a swimming pool to protect things why was he roaming the streets around car dealerships? And where did the gun come from? and he was still under legal age to have a firearm on the streets. And he still murdered 2 and seriously injured a 3rd.

Sorry but he never killed them in cold blood.. he was attacked and in fear of his life... not condoning his actions but it wasnt cold blood..... not hearing much about the trump supporter shot dead in the street at point blank range. Totally unarmed and simply because he was identified as a trump supporter . That's cold blood
That’s not what happened in Portland though is it?
A 200 strong convoy of trucks full of trump supporters rode into the city and attacked protesters with bear spray and paintballs while being escorted by the police.
The video of the shooting of your “unarmed man” clearly shows the victim and a friend approach a protestor, call him out and then attack him with bear spray before the protestor returns fire. Another video shows the cops kicking away the spray can from his body on the ground.
The whole thing is a horrific **** show but you Can’t play the self defence card for one case and not the other

Straight out of the Trump playbook.
I like the narrative that the guy that had the assault rifle was the one fearing for his life from someone throwing something at him (not that the person throwing something at a lunatic with an assault rifle would have feared for their life...)

Easy for you to say. You've probably never been threatened with a can of soup.

You've never met my wife.
She threw a lettuce at me the other day, and that was just the tip of the iceberg...

My wife's granny was an Argyll Campbell. Definitely don't want her chucking her soup at you.

Welcome to the soup party.
I've already said my wife's granny was a Campbell, well, my wife was a Baxter. I knew I was in the soup as soon as I got married.

Think someone has mentioned this already. Looks like Trump is trying to get a vaccine out right before the election so he can be the knight in shining armor. An absolutely horrific gamble with public health for one person's gain.

I'm actually quite scared it might work and win him the election. If the vaccine does work he's a hero, if it doesn't? Well the FDA or whoever approved it, nothing to do with Trump etc. And we know the Republicans won't oppose him.
I know Biden is ahead in the polls but Trump is no ordinary candidate. All politicians resort to dirty tricks. I fear that even with all the stuff he's done, we've seen but a glimpse of what he's capable of.
And that terrifies me.

What's the latest on the mastermind of Trump's 2016 victory, Steve Bannon, who was arrested for embezzlement of funds donated for private funding of the Mexican border wall?

Which he's now denying that he said, even though the film of him saying it, and his tweets, are still there for all to see.
