How do you know this was the test ?

It's widely reported that this is the test plus it clearly matches his description of it. Honestly, if you want to blindly support him that's entirely your prerogative. But you've got yourself into a position where you're praising him for his performance in a test and you don't know what the test is yourself.

Fair enough but that is not what happened. Five words were read out to him once and he was asked to repeat them in order. There is no memorise these words because we are going to test your memory later. Also it is one question in a series of questions, more info from the test in your head. You had the benefit of hearing the sequence of words a number of times in that short clip.

Saw this short CNN clip posted several times. Supposedly the last few, extra hard questions.

I have done great deals. I don’t know but people tell me that. Deals with rhinos. Really beautiful deals. The best deals with rhinos ever.

I did a bunch of tests, they had 30 or 35 questions, like a memory question, like you go Person, Man, Woman, Camera, TV. So they say can you repeat that, I say yeah. Crazy Bernie and Sleepy Joe don’t do that. And they say, that’s amazing, how do you do that? And I say, I don’t know, I have a good memory, some people say I’m a genius. And Nasty Miss Ocasio-Cortez? Well I'm sorry but if you really honestly believe that Trump's ability to remember 5 words in a row is a sign that he is therefore competent to lead the world's biggest democracy, then I don't think I can help you. He has shown in thousands (I thought before writing that, but yes thousands) of other ways that he is uniquely unsuited to the role. The fact that you and - I guess many other Trump supporters - don't recognise this is a sign that something significant is badly damaged in the US. The man is an incompetent fool, and everyone else in the world can see it.

And I do apologise for what you think is a cheap jibe, but I meant that the fact you see no wrong is a big part of the problem.

He is an affront to democracy. He is lowering the level of debate to such a base level and playing on folks tribal instincts kicking in. It’s utterly tragic and depressing in 2020 that the so called worlds policemen is run by an utter buffoon who makes Johnson look like a genius. I feel sorry for the yanks having to listen to his nonsense every day.

that’s really interesting to read, and I doubt it will be the last time it will be explored in the next few months.

actually quite frightening that an incumbent could refuse to accept the election outcome, and what they could do prior to the Election Day and afterwards to cling to power.

i wonder if, once trump is no longer in power, there will be a look at amending their constitution to address such a scenario

:agree:

I'm more concerned about what and who comes after Trump. Trump has pathed the way for a real fascist by making fascist behaviour socially acceptable in mainstream politics in the US, someone with a bit of brains and charisma could use that to great effect in the near future.

Indeed. I think it's in the balance as to whether Trump represents the dying fury of racist America or whether he will pave the way for a far more dangerous demagogue. It seems it's in the balance just now. Trump's popularity with the lowest common denominator is disheartening, but American culture is very strange in many ways.

Good point. Trump is a moron - imagine how much more dangerous the next one will be if they can capture a section of the electorates attention like he has and also be smart enough to not tell people to ingest bleach. Pretty scary prospect.

Agreed. The fact that most folk followed the govt instructions in the main with Covid shows it’s easier than folk think from an extreme president to do as he pleases. Trump constantly tries to chip away at democracy or as he sees it, anybody who disagrees with him. The concept of democratic and accountable govt seems to me to being eroded by small steps. As you say it doesn’t bear thinking about if an extreme of left or right took hold in the USA or here. As Bret weinstein constantly points out, it’s naive in the extreme to think it can’t happen. The utter lies during brexit and trumps making it up as you go along is a warning that should a despot with charm and charisma take power and say the right things then we could well up in a very bleak place.

That’s an excellent article for referring back to. Very informative.

It’s a strange position for a committed leftie like myself but the US represents the best hope for the survival of democratic government as a concept. This election and it’s aftermath is hugely important. We see Putin changing the constitution to make himself president for life. Xi doing the same in China. Modis Hindu nationalists in India. Governments on various stages of conversion to fascism in Brazil Hungary Poland the Philippines. Europe fraying at the seams with Brexit and a rise of populist intolerance in the East. If Trump really does refuse to walk in the event of a November defeat we might be seeing the end of pluralism, concepts of the collective good, the electoral process itself. Most of which was a twentieth century construct anyway.

When I look back at the early 80s when Cold War paranoia was at its height, it seems with hindsight to be a much safer and secure world to what’s being played out now.

The average national poll lead for HRC was 3.2% and she "won" the popular vote by 2.1%.

Biden is currently about 10% ahead in national polls which, even allowing for swing state vagaries, is landslide territory. Something big has to change for Trump to win from here.

Texas would be a massive game changer, . Chuck in Florida, assume California is a given and it looks like landslide territory. Texas has been red since Reagan, in maybe no small part because of those good ol’ Bush boys being on most of the various tickets. Gaining Texas would possibly make Florida redundant in the equation, in terms of getting over the line. Be nice to see an electoral college slaughter though, on a par with 1984 but this time for the good guys (or less worse guys!)

Still no announcement on VP though that might wait until the virtual convention. It is surely between Abrams and Harris. I wouldn’t rule out Trump being Trump and taking Pence off his ticket, even though that is the only security he has with the religious right vote. It is Trump though. Jared for VP!

It is fascinating because Biden has publicly committed to a women running mate. If he hadn’t then O’Rourke would have been a contender and brought Texas even more into play. Also offers youth on the ticket. I still think Biden is right though -it is a real risk of generalising but he was always going to win on women votes and black votes. Abrams or Harris locks it in with a lot of female and black voters. A woman VP, a black VP, both resonate, especially with an electorate looking at Trump’s record through the pandemic and just more generally.

I've reached the point where I don't even want to mock Trump any more.

I think he is mentally ill.

The man needs removed from office and taken to a care facility to be looked after.

It's scary to think a large number of Americans can watch his inane, confused ramblings and not only think they can understand him but they actually agree with him!!

I think this way a lot. It’s tempting to accept that Americans are all stupid rednecks to fall for his constant nonsense. However, He is now trailing by historic levels in the polls. He did lose the popular vote last time around. He had a number of unique advantages last time round; an opponent who was widely mistrusted and disliked. Bottomless coffers in an electoral system where money matters above all else. The best voter analytics, vital especially in localising trends to district level and the best sophisticated social media targeting. And I’ve been reading and listening a lot about US voter suppression; Republican states like Texas allocate so few voting booths to districts that vote Democrat that 6 hour queues are the norm, resulting in lower turnout where people work multiple jobs and can’t get time off, removal of voters, making registration more onerous from particular districts etc. I think American Idiots are over represented by both its electoral system and its media.

How can individual states/districts have the authority to do something like that in a national election? Has it ever been challenged e.g. at the Supreme Court?

How can individual states/districts have the authority to do something like that in a national election? Has it ever been challenged e.g. at the Supreme Court?

The management of the register and the voting process is conducted at state level. I’m not sure if it’s ever been challenged. The source is ‘One Person No Vote, by Carol Anderson. It describes a coordinated policy of deliberately removing people from electoral rolls if they move house frequently, for example, or in Alabama’s case, instituting a voter ID system where public housing ID doesn’t count as verifiable ID, and where dept of motor vehicles offices that would normally give you photo ID have been closed or moved away from black/poor areas that tend to vote more democrat.

The low black vote for Hilary in 2016 was put down to her inability to engage with black voters. But between 2008 when Obama atttacted 15 million first time voters, and 2016, literally MILLIONS of voters had disappeared from the registers, disproportionately from black and poor districts. It’s very persuasive.

Topically in relation to today’s news, Anderson also destroys the Trump claim of widespread absent voter fraud as a total myth. In studies of over a BILLION votes cast in successive US elections, they only found 31 cases of fraud.

He doesn’t have the executive power to do what you say.

He also has no support to do what he is ‘just asking’ about as the responses from senior republicans shows.

And there is no where near enough people surrounding him to make this happen.

My prediction is that he’ll be gone in November, probably wailing and spewing unsubstantiated bile, but he will be gone. It’s just a shame that we have to wait that long.

If he loses in November, he will fill his support with conspiracy theories about millions of illegal immigrants voting etc, and they will swallow it. It could get very messy. If he's on the wrong end of a close result, there will be violence. Only a landslide defeat will avoid that.

You know, I know

They are made in China

we have a world
right?
So the world
is tiny

So tremendous, tremendous
amount of fumes and everything.
You talk about

Right? Spewing.
Whether it’s in China,
Germany, it’s going into the air.
It’s our air
their air
everything — right?
A windmill will kill many bald eagles.
After a certain number
they make you turn the windmill off.
That is true.
—By the way
they make you turn it off.
And yet, if you killed one
they put you in jail.
That is OK.
You want to see a bird graveyard?

55m birds killed by doemstic cats every year in the UK compared to an estimated 100,000 caused by turbines. I hope Trump has domestic cats in his sights.

Many things kill birds...it’s all about perspective and being relative to others.

For example a study by the Us Fish and Wildlife Service estimated that glass buildings in the US are estimated to kill 600m a year due to collisions....do I hear Donald suggesting he knocks down his towers to protect the birds?

Cats were estimated to kill 2.4bn! Collision with vehicles 214.5m, electrical lines 25.5m.
At the same time they estimated that the on shore wind turbines were killing a mighty 234k per annum.

So when looking at those numbers while it’s true to say wind turbines kill birds it’s not true to say that it’s any real argument against their use.

If you were really bothered about birds dying you would be much better off advocating a ban on domestic cats.

Having been involved with the planning aspects of wi d farms in Scotland I can assure you that the chances of birds or any other species being killed by turbine blades is very remote.

What was the bird and what country did this happen and when?

If this is a historic incident or happened recently makes a big difference.

If you would do any objective research in this you would know that many studies have shown that not to be true...

A) climate change acceleration is not due to cycles of planetary activity. For example: the solar energy absorbed by the Earth has been relatively unchanged for 150 million years
B) the acceleration of carbon dioxide in our soil has increased exponentially since the Industrial Age.... by over 70 times, compared with that of the natural effects of the sun (for example)

I’m guessing you’ve already made up your mind on it though ....

I would have thought that sheep fleece didn’t lend itself to sponging. You probably want a carpet sweeper but then you face issues in that you can’t restrain the sheep, given the long handle.

Probably need a second person which makes it into something far more resource-intensive.

I would have thought that sheep fleece didn’t lend itself to sponging. You probably want a carpet sweeper but then you face issues in that you can’t restrain the sheep, given the long handle.

Probably need a second person which makes it into something far more resource-intensive.

I've never really believed in oxygen. It's always seemed to me to be a government ruse to get people to open windows, go outside, that kind of thing. Notably in history both having windows and going out to work has resulted in taxation, which I think tells its own story.

When you say sing to the original, what style do you mean?

I have tried country, rare dub, Motownish and eighties classic hip-hop.

I ruled out the original style and am considering free-form jazz with a bit of skat but because I am in the garden I am sensing the neighbours starting to be restless.

Lennon has a lot of achievements to his name but he clearly never ‘imagined’ how to recreate his song in a different style in a Jedburgh garden!

Loathe as I am to bring this thread back to Trump, I've just watched some of his interview with Jonathan Swan, which was broadcast on HBO last night. The man is beyond parody.

The bit about Coronavirus in the US is startling; he brings out paper charts to show Swan and persuade him on his argument. Basically, his argument is that the relevant figure is "deaths per number of confirmed cases" rather than "deaths per head of population". He then refers to not getting enough credit for the US doing more testing than any other country. He's so out of his depth that he'd almost engender sympathy if the situation wasn't so serious and he wasn't such a ****.

I understand why people would be suspicious that Trump may try to hold onto power if he loses the election, but the man I see is simply not capable of doing so.

Jonathan Swan seems to get away with more piercing questions than other interviewers. Despite the hostile tone Trump seems to kinda like him. Great guy, doing a fantastic job. But Its still FAKE NEWS people!! Particularly women or non white press people tend to get shouted down for asking similar questions. You have to wonder why Trump agrees to be interviewed by him when he is so clearly intellectually inferior.

Obviously # of deaths per head of population is a different and more meaningful statistic than # of deaths per cases when forming a view on how effective any countrys response to CV is. But do Trump voters appreciate that? Do they even care? Does Trump realise what he’s saying doesn’t really stand up but is just ploughing through anyway, either lost in a narcissistic dream state or just hoping his core support don’t notice or don’t care?

Trump is, in every possible way you can think of, an idiot.

That he's somehow been bankrolled into the position he is, makes him nothing more than a useful idiot for those that placed him there.

It's almost unthinkable that someone that stupid, that ignorant, and that much of an idiot, could wind up as President of the USA, but here we are.

It's the fact that he also argues that the US case numbers are artificially high due to the amount of testing they do IN THE SAME INTERVIEW as praising himself for low deaths per case rates. Can you imagine being the poor sod trying to explain that one is an outcome of the other??? There isn't a box of crayons big enough.

:agree:

Whilst I’m not saying he was a good president I remember saying when he got elected that the doomsday scenarios predicted by all wouldn’t come to fruition - or at least to the extent others thought it would. I reckoned he’d get 4, possibly even 8 years and they’d be fairly non eventful (as much as a presidential campaign can be anyway) and that would be it. If COVID hadn’t come round I do think that would probably have been how it would have went.

The way he’s dealt with COVID though has made others predictions look mild. Guys ****ing nuts.

Interestingly it wasn’t frozen or called out for posting clearly doctored photos of Biden. Claiming he was alone and diminished in his basement they heavily edited photos of him at a football watching party, outdoors at a rally and even him praying in church...all (rather poorly) edited to try and show him pale and frail and alone in his basement.

In an attempt to appeal to the right-wing-evangelical-nut-jobs, Trump has attacked Biden's religious credentials.

“He’s following the radical-left agenda: take away your guns, destroy your Second Amendment, no religion, no anything, hurt the Bible, hurt God,” .... “He’s against God.”

It’s actually not such a ridiculous concept, although clearly all the authorities had to do was ask Hearts as they had already won the war by then so clearly would have had no problem in winning it again.

But to the general concept Trump is alluding to its known the First World War pretty much exhausted all sides in terms of man power, such was the carnage and death rate. And the Spanish flu was indeed rampant in the barracks where they were based and was a huge killer of men. Then there is the strong evidence that the second wave of the flu was the result of the troops returning home and spreading it like wildfire.

Clearly ol’ Trump has got his wars mixed up but there is also some suggestion that the Spanish flu likely killed more US troops in WWI than enemy action.

So on this one I kind of see his point. <did I actually just say that! [emoji2957][emoji23]>

What also must be remembered about the Spanish flu though is that medicine at that time actually didn’t know what a virus was so it’s rather hard to piece it all together in terms of what actually happened.

And it didn’t come from Spain. I’ve read about the troops being carriers. Makes sense, high concentration of men, crammed together exhausted and not the best of condition. Ripe for disease.

"She was really mean to 'Sleepy Joe" and "Nastier than even Pocahontas" towards him. Apparently Pocahontas is Trump's nickname for Elizabeth Warren. Infantile.

He was claimed she has said false and misleading things in the past. Although I imagine, if she has, it's not more than the 20,000 times (this is actually a proven figure, by a study at a US university) he has done so since 2016.

The difference between the fears of men and women. Men are scared women will say something nasty about us. Women fear rape or worse.

You all don't get it. I live in Trump country, in the Ozarks in southern Missouri, one of the last places where the KKK still has a relatively strong established presence. They don't give a **** what he does.
He's just something to rally around and hate liberals, that's it, period. He absolutely realizes that and plays it up, they love it, he knows they love it, and the fact that people act like it's anything other than that just proves that liberals are idiots, all the more reason for high fives all around. If you keep getting caught up in why do they not realize blah blah blah and how can they still back him after blah blah blah, you are not understanding what is the underlying motivating factor of his support.
It's **** liberals, that's pretty much it. Have you noticed he can do pretty much anything imaginable and
they'll explain some way that rationalizes it that makes zero logical sense? Because they're not even keeping track of any logical narrative, it's irrelevant, **** liberals is the only relevant thing, trust me, I know first hand what I'm talking about. That's why they just laugh at

That's all just trivial details - the economy, health care, whatever. **** liberals.Look at the thing with not wearing the masks. I can tell you what
that's about. It's about exposing fear. They're playing chicken with nature and whoever flinches just moved down their internal pecking order, one step closer to being a liberal. And I mean passionate,
sadistic hatred. And I'm not exaggerating. Believe me. Sadistic, passionate hatred, and that's what proves they're strong, their passionate hatred for weakness. Sometimes they lump in vulnerability, a
compromised circumstance, or an overwhelming circumstance in their with weakness, too, because people tend to start humbling themselves when they're in those circumstances and that's an obvious sign of weakness.Kindness=weakness. Honesty=weakness. Compromise=weakness. They
consider their very existence to be superior in every way to anyone who doesn't hate weakness as much as they do. They consider liberals to be weak people that are inferior, almost a different species, and the fact
that liberals are so weak is why they have to unite in large numbers, which they find disgusting, but it's that disgust that is a true expression of their natural superiority.Go ahead and try to have a logical, rational conversation with them though.

Congress is both the Senate (senators) and the House of Representatives (congressmen and congresswomen).

There are elections every two years. All members of the House of Representatives stand, as they do two-year terms. One-third of senators stand on a rotating basis because they do six-year terms.

In amongst that you have a presidential election every four years, gubernatorial and mayoral elections and various elections to state legislatures.

It is what makes the ‘mid-terms’ a thing. Two years into a presidency, all of the House of Reps and a third of Senate are in an election fight. Because of the way the American Constitution was founded, that can very much help or hamstring the sitting president.

I suppose it makes a change from 'the Jews are pulling the strings'

The traditional American establishment. Kennedy was the sole Catholic president, and, sadly, many Southern Democrats voted against him because of his religion. Al Smith, a Catholic, ran against Herbert Hoover in 1928 and was subjected to a vicious sectarian campaign, accused of his loyalty being to Rome rather than Washington. After his defeat he said to the press, "I guess this country isn't ready for a Catholic in the White House".

Its not a pejorative description :dunno: The Republican Party was born out of that genuinely conservative Protestantism brought by European immigrants to the industrial NE of the USA. In UK terms you’d call it One Nation Conservatism. It’s also a big part of the schism between the North and South that led to the civil war, super distrustful of the evangelical South. Just about all your early presidents were from that tradition.

Id do the same as her and try and put a stop to itWhy do you want to put a stop to it?

(I take it that the "it" we're talking about is the refugees attempting to get into the UK by risking their lives on small dinghies in the English Channel).

Why don't you want refugees to be allowed to enter the UK?

And Patel proving it, right on cue ... (https://twitter.com/gavinesler/status/1293815466188836867)

She is, as my granny would have said, a nasty piece of work.

The best bit there was when the anchor says ‘We laugh at this NOW, but...’
This is the future of the Republican Party unless the old WASPy establishment gets off its ass and does something about it.

It's born of desperation. In the past forty years, since Reagan was elected, millions of Americans have been dispossessed and are angry. They are drowning in debt, yet they voted for their own demise. Sadly, their culture is dominated by the lowest common denominator: don't analyse the systemic failings, just lash out at the weakest, so deflecting from real analysis. It's rather like The Sun and Daily Mail here telling us that social problems are totally disconnected from the policy causes. Lash out and condemn, don't analyse. There are plenty of idiots who accept the narrative: treat the symptom, not the cause; thus they continue to dig their own grave.

I mentioned earlier in the thread, the blue collar paradox. Voting for the very people who moved their jobs to Mexico and the Far East.

I just don’t know how to break that cycle.
